The Tor Project is looking for Browser Developer (C++ and Javascript)!

As a browser developer, your job would be to work closely with other
members of the Tor Browser development team on C++ patches to our Firefox-
based browser, writing new APIs, altering functionality for privacy and
security, and making improvements to our collection of Firefox add-ons
(JavaScript code). Being a Tor Browser developer includes triaging,
 diagnosing, and fixing bugs; looking for and resolving web privacy issues;
responding on short notice to urgent security issues; and working
collaboratively with coworkers and volunteers to implement new features
and web behavior changes. We also need help making our code more
maintainable, testable, and mergeable by upstream. The person in this
position will also review other people's code, designs, and academic
research papers to make suggestions for improvement.

 This is a full-time position.

 Required Qualifications:

 • Experience in C++ (and ideally, JavaScript). Five years of C++
experience is probably necessary for the level of expertise we want,
though some of these years can be replaced with other Object Oriented
Programming and/or C experience. If you meet this level of experience with
C++/OOP, JavaScript can be learned on the job.
 • Possess a solid understanding of issues surrounding secure C++
programming and reference counted memory (at least to the level of
 avoiding issues).
 • Be comfortable diving into new, unfamiliar codebases, looking for
ways to alter and augment their functionality in specific, goal-oriented
 ways.
 • Be familiar with web technologies and how the web works,
especially the same-origin model and web tracking.
 • Willingness and ability to justify and document technical
decisions for a public, world-wide technical audience.
 • Be comfortable working remotely with a geographically distributed
 team.
 • Experience interacting with users and other developers online,
including experience being confronted with differing ideas and opinions
(not always in a nice manner), while maintaining a high level of
 professionalism.
 • Comfort with transparency: as a non-profit organization who
develops open source software, almost everything we do is public,
including your name (or at least your business name) and possibly salary
 information.

 Preferred qualifications:
 • Familiarity and/or experience with writing add-ons and/or patches
for Mozilla Firefox or other web browsers.
 • Familiarity with compiling software for the Android platform.
 • Familiarity with Firefox's internal architecture, including its
use of multiple processes and sandboxing.
 • Be intensely creative yet also ruthlessly pragmatic in your
 thinking.
 • Possess knowledge/familiarity of probability, statistics, and
 information theory.
 • Know enough about networking to be able to visualize what HTTP 1.1
looks like on the wire while encapsulated within Tor's network protocol.
 • Experience working with distributed (remote) teams across
different time-zones with people of differing skill levels over multiple
mediums, including email, instant messaging, and IRC.
 • Open-source experience: contributed significant chunks of code to
multiple open-source projects in the past.
 • Familiarity with distributed version control systems, including
 Git.
 •

Comment (by cypherpunks):

If one opens {{{about:newtab}}} and drags text {{{search query}}} then not
only this error is shown, but the tab keeps loading when there's nothing
 to load.

Tested on security settings: medium, Tor Browser 7.5a1.

Open Tor Browser, go to https://blog.torproject.org for example. Have some
text in a text editor ("search query"), select it and drag it to the page
(and not the tabs or something near that), normally this would lead to
default search engine processing it and loading search engine page, but
instead it outputs "The address isn’t valid" error.

 Found` in the HTML body.

I thought that this google.co.in response was a fluke; but it seems to be
representative of Google's geolocation redirects. I just now captured one
for www.google.nl by requesting www.google.com through Tor:
 {{{
 (echo -n $'GET / HTTP/1.1\r\nHost: www.google.com\r\n\r\n'; cat) |
 torsocks -i ncat --ssl -v www.google.com 443
 }}}
The exact file: attachment:20170615-google.nl-302.http. Here it is with
whitespace visualized (including both `\n` and `\r\n` line endings):
 {{{
 HTTP/1.1 302 Found\r\n
 Cache-Control: private\r\n
 Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8\r\n
 Referrer-Policy: no-referrer\r\n

 302 Moved\n
 The document has moved\n
 https://www.google.nl/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=eyhDWYnWEIzHsAHJ3biIBw";>here.\r\n
 \r\n
 }}}

Now, this response is quite similar to the injected KZ censorship response
from comment:159, including whitespace and capitalization quirks, but
there are some differences. Here is a diff of the two responses.
 {{{#!diff

 The differences are:
  1. Google uses `302 Found` in the status-line but `302 Moved` in the
body; KZ uses `302 Found` in both places.
  2. The set of headers and their order are different. Google has `Content-
Type` before `Location` but KZ has it the other way around.
  3. Google's `Content-Length` is correct while KZ's [[comment:202|is
 wrong]].
  4. Google says `here.\r\n` while KZ says `here\n` (removes the
dot and changes the line ending).
  5. KZ ends with an additional `\r\n`.

It almost looks like the KZ firewall was trying to imitate the Google
 redirect, but didn't quite succeed.

I just noticed something weird about this response. The `Content-Length:
210` header is ''wrong''. The body is actually 224 bytes.

You can see the same when you open attachment:youporn.com.pcap in
Wireshark. The "Line-based text data: text/html" is cut off after `https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/20348#comment:202>

My branch bug22502 on https://github.com/teor2345 has fixes for this
 issue, and all child issues.

They don't work yet, but they are a start: they allow chutney to get at
 least some consensuses decompressed.

I'm going to leave any further fixes and the changes file to someone else.

Given the number of times we don't check the output of tor_compress_new(),
we should probably hard assert if it would return NULL, or check in all
 those places, or something?

Damn folks seem excited about asyncio. Seems to be a builtin intended to
replace twisted starting with Python 3.4...

 https://docs.python.org/3/library/asyncio.html

We should consider adding an AsyncController class that uses it, so we can
integrate with folks who want a controller using that pattern.

The second time we create a stream in tor_compress_impl, we don't check if
 it's NULL.

Comment (by mwolfe):

I could access all the Independent comments in Tor7.4 and Tor6, but not in
Tor7.5, so it's something about Tor7.5 that refuses the comments for some
 reason.

Of course, Tor6 and Tor7.4 had other problems, but at least I could see
 the comments.

Comment (by teor):

This issue sometimes goes away when lzma is enabled, I can reliably
reproduce some error using `./configure --enable-zstd --disable-lzma`, and
then I get a chutney failure wslightly different output:
 {{{

 `make test-network` works with `--disable-lzma --disable-zstd` and

This is not the swapiness, but the swap in/out pages per second I asked
 for.
And yes a value >250 will make a system hang.

Comment (by cypherpunks):

peak time was at Don Jun 15 04:21:40 CEST 2017

 your smem logs say that
 - RSS system total: 0.33%
 - tor used very little memory but a lot of swap space (>270MB per process)
(which very likely causes your system to hang completely)
(again you do not provide any swap in/out graphs)

 your /proc/meminfo says:
 - 3664 MB memory used (does not show in smem -> kernel memory?)
 - 679 MB SWAP used

 What is your swapiness?

 Possible next items:
 - add another smem output to list kernel memory:
 - {{{smem -kwt}}}
 - Try disabling tor's swap usage: {{{ DisableAllSwap 1 }}}
I guess this will kill tor earlier but prevent the extreme
 swaping/trashing.
 - try to reproduce on clean system with same relay keys

 - guess I was wrong when I said tor might be using more memory before it
 was killed

When you make a new event on the blog, you can set the Start Time and the
End Time. But when you have made the event, suddenly it's the top event on
the frontpage. It turns out there's another, optional, time you can set,
called "Calendar date", and if you don't set it, it fills in today.

We should make it fill in the same date as Start Time instead. Or make it
leave the optional thing empty, and use the Start Time if Calendar date
 isn't filled in.

Another option is to fix .pc and submit a PR to

I will enable lzma, no worries.

Go to the frontpage of the blog, and then click on "see all upcoming
events" on the right column. You end up at
 https://blog.torproject.org/events/upcoming
which starts off telling me about a January 24, 2008 event.

There is a subtle link called "See the events calendar" which brings us to
 https://blog.torproject.org/events/month
which I think is the calendar we are hoping to see after the first click.

Previously, tor only required pkg-config to build with systemd support. So
only Linux distributions with systemd needed to worry about pkg-config.

Now the compression options also require pkg-config, making it a new
dependency on a significant number of platforms.

We need to put this in the release announcement.

We have two options for a workaround here:
 * try to find the static library without pkg-config
 * check at configure time for the library we want to use, and
automatically disable zstd if it isn't available (or ask the user to
 disable zstd)

FreeBSD has disabled *both* zstd and lzma compression due to this bug.

I could measure an OOM this morning.

The logs look better now. But you will realize they are not happening
every minute. This is because of the machine slowdown.
Anyway I think you well get an good impression of what happens.

When you draft a new blog post, and pick the tag "foo", it prevents you
from publishing, because "foo" is not a known tag.

It looks like you're only allowed to choose from tags that were used on
 the old blog?

The better behavior is to let people pick whatever tags they want to pick.

Comment (by asn):

We discussed this with Nick, and decided that the best course of action
here might be to do this validation for all HS public keys, and also for
all received ed25519 public keys but only on the dirauth-side.

So instead of having clients do validation for all received public keys
(which can be quite heavy since consensuses contain 7k of them), we do it
 only on the dirauth side.

Comment:

Not sure about your problem with the Independent. If they block Tor on
purpose in that case there is probably not much we can do. But glad that
your crashes are gone! Marking this as duplicate of #22362.

Comment (by arma):

Is the search thing actually good? That is, sufficiently close to what
you'd get from a google search on host:blog.torproject.org?

If not, maybe we should drop it, to reduce surface area, reduce
distracting things that people would expect to work when they don't, etc?

That's because you haven't reloaded the page after revoking permissions.

And now we have to mention whether it was in e10s mode or not :(
WFM e10s on Win 10. (Stalling is non-e10s issue, according to previous

I've had the same problem with Win 10. I have tried 3 clean installs (to
different directories) of torbrowser-install-7.0.1 and it won't open after
installing. Have reverted to installing 6.5, and it works with no

Comment (by mcs):

I missed the fact that it had to be a local file (sorry!)
The cause is likely similar to that of #22471; my guess without looking at
the code or debugging this problem is that the file: URL handler does not
support the Suspend() / Resume() mechanism we added to work around #21766
and related problems. It seems like we will need to use a different
technique to solve all of the problems, e.g., we could implement our
download warning dialog the same way Mozilla implements their download-
related prompts. Their prompts are asynchronous (which means the download
proceeds while the user thinks about how to respond) but somehow the final
download is blocked until the user finishes interacting with the dialog
window. Maybe we can use Suspend() when it will work (i.e. for HTTP-based
downloads) and skip the Suspend() in other cases.

Comment (by cypherpunks):

George, I should add I only tested this with security level set to high
which enables click-to-play for video. From what I've seen videos _need_
to be blocked for the download to begin, if step 7 failed for you then
perhaps you tested with security level set to low?

Isn't the URL an http:// or https:// one?

Yeah, "Downloading" might be misleading. What I have been doing is the
same as in #22610, loading a pdf file from the hard disk but instead of
hitting the "Cancel" button on the external helper app I proceeded and
tried to save that file on the hard disk somewhere else. This gets handled
as a download in Firefox it seems with the stalling symptoms.

Hmm, I'm not a fan of throwing "not available" runtime exceptions. That
feels a lot like bad design, which we can, in theory, fix with the move to
2.0.0. But if we don't, any objections if we just document this in the
overridden method and just return the default `null` or empty something?

Okay, this happens as well with 6.5.2, so it does not seem #20761 related.
Thus, moving this back to tor (I have not looked whether that is valid

 > Where in the JavaDocs would you state that there won't be any useful
content to expect? In `Descriptor` or in overridden methods in
 `UnparseableDescriptor`?

 Only in the overridden methods.
Actually, it might be better to throw the "not available" runtime
exceptions in order to avoid future bug-hunts when the getAnnotations,
getUnrecognizedLines methods get called on an Unp.Descr.
The exceptions would make the code fail early and clearly point to the
 problem.

 >
 > By the way, I'm still busy testing the changed branch in applications.
One issue I ran into is that I didn't find an easy way to use the new
`readDescriptors()` method in the CollecTor sync part. Would you mind
replacing that code there, just to see that the new interface works for
 it, too?

 I'll take a look.

What do you mean to say with that changelog? That the usage of `-mnop-fun-

 fixed in upstream NSS with

Comment (by mwolfe):

The basic crash (I sent lots of logs) was when I opened several tabs, and
Tor would crash with an error log that is displayed on the screen if I'm
in OSX. I also get the crash in bootcamp, but I have no idea where Windows
 hides the crash logs.

I haven't had the crash problem since I upgraded to 7.5a1, or the hang. So
 far.

My OSX crashed when I forgot to run the app that blocks the NVIDIA chip
 from being used.

But I have a new problem: I read the Independent (www dot independent dot
co dot uk), and Tor now blocks all the comments. This should not be
particular to my ancient Mac. When I comment, I don't want them to know
who I am or where I am, so I don't read The Indpendent except via Tor, and
 I miss the comments.

They should be fixed with 7.0.1. Can you confirm that?

See the scenario in #22610. If you are not clicking on `Cancel` but are

 the resulting download is stalling.

Yeah, I just found out the same: Going to `about:preferences#applications`
and setting the pdf option to "Always ask" AND being in e10s mode
 reproduces the issue for me.

Now, not sure what disabled your pdf viewer, though. The standard install
comes with it enabled and we did not change that over the years.

If it is working in Centos 6.5 without a chroot, a possible reason could

Comment (by cypherpunks):

Why "Allot Communications" vanished from topic? State-level censorship
 supported by Allot still.

 Replying to [comment:1 gk]:
 > Hm, there is no download box showing up for me. The document loads
directly in the pdf viewer. Do you have a particular file causing this
(maybe one I could download and then load from the desktop)?

I could no longer reproduce the issue when I re-installed the Tor Browser,
which is strange considering that I had already gpg authenticated (as I
always do) the previous installation on which this problem occurred.

Also note that it happened with ALL pdf files that I tried, not just a
particular one. Furthermore, when normally loading pdfs from a site it
would show up in pdf.js, but when I tested it started showing me the
 download box instead.
