[tor-relays] Running A Tor Relay On Windows 10 (Was Continuing To Run A Relay On Mac OS High Sierra Via Homebrew After A New Mac OS Version Is Released)

2018-10-04 Thread Keifer Bly
Hello,

So adding to the previous discussion, I was not able to run Debian Linux on my
machine, or the new Mac OS. What I ended up doing was formatting the hard drive
(erasing the OS and all), then did a fresh install of Debian Linux, which after
installing failed to load. However, what I then did a fresh install of was
Windows 10, and it is successfully up and running.

I have my relay fingerprint backed up. If someone could please send me the
instructions for running a relay on Windows 10, that would be appreciated. I
know I could run a Debian Linux virtual machine, but would rather not have to
deal with VMs.

Your instructions (or ideas) are appreciated. Thank you.

Re: [tor-relays] Continuing To Run A Relay On Mac OS High Sierra Via Homebrew After A New Mac OS Version Is Released

2018-10-04 Thread Keifer Bly
Ok. So I removed Mac OS and installed Linux, and after an entire day of
trying everything, Linux crashed when I tried to load it no matter what I
did. I am now going to try installing Windows 10 on it, is there a way to
run a relay on Windows 10? Thanks.

I get how you'd feel that way, given that you've been part of the Tor
community for quite some time.

On the other hand, people create threads frequently about the fate of
their relay(s) hosted by various firms. And, with few exceptions, I
don't recall seeing replies here from those firms. In a few cases,
operators have posted messages received from providers. But there have
rarely been replies. Once or twice in the last few years, as I recall.

I can't say that I really care. Traffic and storage are inexpensive
these days, and it's easy to filter messages. So what's the harm?

First of all, we are not talking about an ISP in the real sense of the
word. Is is OVH who is the ISP. This is a re-seller of an ISP, but this
 is not the point.

The point is, with all due respect, this really has to stop. it has been
so much noise about this, more than any CVE vulnerability we had. This
is not what this mailing list is meant for. This is not Conrad
Rockenhaus blog or support forums. If so much people on this list are
interested in this topic these people should setup their own community,
own mail list and own blogs / forums where they can talk about Greypony
until the Earth as a planet becomes square. But it is off topic here.
This statement could have been sent directly to their customers, not to
 everyone on the list.

Would you like me to start sending every day emails about how I bought a
provider independent prefix and contracted 2 upstream providers with BGP
sessions and 4gbps bwidth? I done this to avoid being thrown over and
over by hosters as I changed more than 5 in the last 2 years. I didn't
notify anyone about it as I don't think anyone should care.

For example the BGP session with my backup provider failed today for 45
minutes. Would you like to hear about it? I sent them an email. They
 fixed it. Hmmm.

On the other side of things, I am really sorry about the health
incident, which is of course sad, and I wish Conrad a fast recovery and
best wishes for his health and his family.

We wouldn’t have to make these threads if community members like Isaac

Yes to the sentiment. This list is not a platform for any provider. Can
anyone imagine if even one or two other providers conducted themselves
similarly on relays@? It's been stated politely before by teor, but much
of the greypony discussion (positive and negative) has no place here.

The term "drama queen" is not appropriate either though. It has sexist
connotations. The irony is that the most over-sensitive person I know in
the public light who does perform dramatically and irrationally happens
to be the president of a certain country, and he identifies strongly as
a male.

Yes I would say so. Mentioning a few Tor nodes going offline is one thing, but
by now half of this list is covered in total b/s drivel such as

Do you REALLY think that this is exactly the place where breaking news about
a Contractor getting Hired to Replace a Switch and Fix the Cabling at some
company is of interest to most people? And honestly this entire thing seems
like a set-up for two drama queens to feel important about themselves.

At that point it might be worth installing Linux on the computer and
running a relay that way :)

2018-10-04 Thread Keifer Bly
How could I install Linux on a 2011 iMac? I know I could run a virtual machine,
but could I set Linux as the default OS to boot from? If I were to do this,
could I copy my relay fingerprint over?

Thanks.

Hi Keifer,

You could install linux on the Mac and run the relay there - if you need a GUI
then Ubuntu or Elementary are good distributions to run. Ubuntu uses apt for
its package manager "under the hood" so once you're up and running installing
Tor would be as simple as issuing "apt-get install Tor" from a root terminal.

Alternatively if you install xcode you will be able to compile Tor from source,
which is a little more involved than using homebrew but will allow you to keep
up to date.

You can try Linux in a virtual machine on your Mac to make sure it does what
you need it to.

Good luck!

computer”. Ugh.

As my relay is running via homebrew, I created a homebrew support ticket for
this incident, and this was their response.

“Generally homebrew supports only the last 3 releases, which would mean you
have 2 more years of bottle support at least. It doesn’t mean it’ll stop

Seeing as they say homebrew supports the last three releases of Mac OS, I
should be fine for another while. However, they hinted that the main thing that
is dropped support for is bottles, so I am wondering if running the tor relay
software via homebrew requires this process? I can’t really buy a new computer
right now, and that’s the only available that isn’t a laptop, so I am trying to
find available options. Thanks all.
