[tor-relays] Test bed in MyFamily?

2018-08-29 Thread Totor be
Hi list,

Just a quick question about families: I'm in the process of setting up a
4th relay as test bed VM in order to validate the Linux and Tor updates
before updating my 3 live relays (none of these are exits)

This 4th relay will be fully operational, but will only be started from
time to time, when updates are available
After the updates are installed, I plan to leave it running for half a day
or so until it appears in Tor Metrics
Question: should I include this test bed relay in MyFamily or leave it
completely stand alone?
What would you recommend?

Thanks!

Hi Ian

That's what I've done, but what is the rationale if I may ask ?
Personally, I prefer not to see a relay than seeing one down, but this is
extremely subjective!

Thanks

[tor-relays] Migrating to CentOS8

2019-11-03 Thread Totor be
Hi folks

I'm considering migrating my relays from CentOS 7 to CentOS 8 and upgrading
tor from 0.3.5.8 to 0.4.1.6
One small VM relay at home is running the C8/0.4 setup and seems to be ok

According to bodhi, this is supposed to be stable
https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/?packages=tor

Before migrating the others, I prefer to cross-check: is there anyone aware
of issues with C8 and tor 0.4.x??

Thanks!

[tor-relays] Where to run new relays?

2020-01-01 Thread Totor be
Hi list,

I'm planning to go for a full reinstall of my 2 guards in order to upgrade
them to CentOS 8 & Tor 0.4.x
My current relays (Tor 0.3.5.8 & CentOS7) are running at OVH (France) and I
was considering installing the new ones at a more useful location
France has the second highest aggregated consensus weight, so I should
avoid France, THAT is clear

But then I got puzzled:
Should I maximise the bandwidth criteria by running the relays in countries
having good connectivity and bandwidth (Europe, US...), at the cost of
diversity?
Should I maximise the geographical diversity (Gabon, Reunion...) at the
cost of bandwidth?

Alternatively, I could just stop asking stupid questions and make my life
easier by reinstalling at OVH...

The stats are nice indeed, but I miss clear recommendations in order to
make my mind

So, any useful recommendation,guys?

Re: [tor-relays] Relay in a stop/start loop

2020-04-06 Thread Totor be
Hi Roger,

Some quick facts
- tor is enabled to auto-start when the system boots
- I do have nyx on that box, but I just run it every now and then (i.e. it
does not run permanently)
- there is nothing else than tor on the box
- disc space is not an issue: 45G free on /root, 700M free on /boot and 53G
free on /home

The other things to investigate are way beyond my linux competences
My best bet would be to perform a fresh install (OS+tor)

Thanks!

Re: [tor-relays] Does OVH cloud support exit relays?

2020-05-11 Thread Totor be
Hi,

A few years ago, OVH explicitly disallowed exits
Note that, by then, regular relays were also not authorized on VPS
This is why I'm running relays inVMs on a physical server with no issue
(from OVH) since years

Having said that, I must admit I have not recently checked if their policy
have changed

[tor-relays] Relay on CentOS8

2021-08-20 Thread Totor be
Hi all

As you might be aware, CentOS is switching from CentOS Linux to CentOS
Stream
https://www.centos.org/cl-vs-cs/

They provides a straightfowrarw way to migrate from Lunix to Stream:
#dnf swap centos-linux-repos centos-stream-repos
#dnf distro-sync

I have migrated a relay running in a small VM and everything seems to run
fine

Before migrating my production relay, I would appreciate any feedback from
other CentOS users on this migration: disk space required, eventual issues
envountered and more generally do's & don'ts

Thanks a lot!

Re: [tor-relays] Relay on CentOS8

2021-08-24 Thread Totor be
Hi Neel,

Thank you for your advice, but I was not planning to run away from CentOS.
For what I need, it suits me perfectly

My question was exclusively about the migration process CentOS Linux to
CentOS Stream
Any advice on that migration would be much appreciated

Thanks
