I realize this is a contreversial subject, and not everyone is of a
like mind, and that's fine. However, the OP was wondering if an
additional power drain on the Touch could result in a jitter increase,
and I was just pointing out that at least one person believes it's true.
Yes, the OP was asking specifically about powering a drive through the
USB, which is electrically different than powering a pair of headphones
through the jack, so you can't draw a definative conlcusion about
powering a drive through the USB. But I do think it is worthwhile to
point out the findings of others in this general area.

I'm neurotic enough to believe the findings of John may have merit, and
I'll be shopping for a drive with an independent power source, just to
be sure. But I understand most people will think I'm a bit of a
nut-job.:)

Hail windows mobile ^^. No limitations as to the Wifi features here.

SlimControl (version 1.3) will hopefully be able to set up SqueezeBoxes
without a controller.

Why does Apple limit Wifi functionality ?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Unofficial official Release Date

2010-01-12 Thread metalbob

I spoke with a Logitech rep in their room at CES (they didn't have a
booth on the main floor where I was working) and he stated late
February/early March. The unit was not on display in the room, but a
sealed box was. The box lists Apple Lossless as a native format and
not on the list of ones needing to be transcoded.

The unit was on display front and center in the lobby though as it as
with all the other award winners this year. I was surprised how small
the unit was as the pictures give a bit of a bulky appearance based on
the screen size compared to the rest of the unit.

You can use the free DD-WRT firmware with many cheap wireless routers
to create a wireless bridge - see http://www.dd-wrt.com/ . I used to use
this with an old Linksys WRT-54G router until the router gave up the
ghost.

They do make such things: a wireless bridge. They tend to be spendy
though.

yes, they both have ethernet.

And if you want Internet, you could take another hub port and attach a
powerline adaptor to that and put one upstairs with the router.

If the Vortex/Touch are in the same room, wiring those two is easy.

No reason to make two 'runs' back to the router, especially not
wireless: sending a packet from downstairs (VortexBox) -> upstairs
(router) -> downstairs (Touch) would be icky. If it's a problematic
path, that would very likely push it over the edge.

This is kind of interesting. Is there anything that would equate to a
wireless hub? That is, something that would connect the Touch and
VortexBox -and- serve as a wireless connection back to my router and,
subsequently, the internet?

Outside of that, are you saying a simple hub would connect the Touch
and the Vortex Box, creating their own network, just without internet
access or access back to my current network...?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Potential Vortex Box + SB Touch Setups

2010-01-12 Thread snarlydwarf

Since the Touch and the Vortexbox would be in the same room...

I would get a cheap hub and connect them to each other.

Then do a homeplug to get back upstairs, depending on how well wireless
worked.

But connecting a Touch and Vortexbox is easy.. the 'hard' part is
getting the two of them back to the 'net' for Radio and CD lookups when
ripping. The good news is that if you're not using net radio streams,
the CDDB type lookups are TINY, taking virtually no bandwidth at all...
so perhaps even a cruddy wireless connection will suffice.

I'm currently using 6 Actiontec MegaPlug A/V 200 adapters
( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001OOZ1X2 ) and can recommend them
highly. You probably won't get 200mbs, but you will get a rock-solid
connection at wireless-G speeds at least. I've been recommending them to
my relatives and they work well for them too.

Here's a bunch at Amazon (US):
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_3_8?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=homeplug+ethernet+adapter&sprefix=homeplug

I haven't used them, so I can't give any recommendations. Read the
customer reviews, remembering it's not a random sample of buyers. You're
probably fine going with one of the common brands like Netgear or
Linksys/Cisco. But if you can pull the ethernet cable between the two
locations without too much hassle (remember to use internal walls) that
is a better solution.

I started to look into homeplugs, but was mostly getting hits on UK
plugs. Are there any US plugs you'd recommend?

I think I'll see just how difficult it will be to run the line and, if
it proves to be to big of a chore, I'll just get some plugs if I can
find good ones.

I'll look into that as well. Thanks for the tips.

I'd suggest the tried and true SB3/Classic.

I think you've swayed off the point RAID is not a backup, its a method
of covering your proverbial in the cas of a failed HDD, backups need to
be organised and removed as the two most likly causes of loss of data
are a) environmenal b) human error,

environmental will most likly effect both drives, power spike, water
damage, physical theft..
Human Error, ie accidentally errased files etc, although QNap Nas have
network recycle bin which can help with this.
