[SlimDevices: Touch] Why no touch lite?

2010-01-19 Thread Dandyman

All I need right now is a replacment for a dead CD-Player that is easy
to use. I don't need a built in server. A simple client like the old
Squeezebox would soffice but with the touchscreen.

The built in server in the Touch adresses a need in the market.

Many struggle with (more or less supported) NAS installations of SC.

Making to version of the product would cost more and confuse buyers in
the store, the idea is to make the whole experience simpler.

If you have no need for the built-in server, simply don't use it.

For the low price I have seen some people using the Touch as a
controller. Not a player or a server. Just to control their other
players. This is the advantage of mass produced commodity hardware. It
can have a lot of features you don't use.

Like Letten said, you can ignore the built-in server on the SBT. Or if
you don't need the touchscreen to be attached to the player, there is
the combination of old SB being controlled remotely by an iPhone or
iPod Touch and the iPeng app. Indeed, from comments on these forums it
seems that a lot of people prefer the touchscreen to be separate from
the player.

Just guessing at what he might be talking about, I think he might have
been referring to Beta Testers that have been talking about Controlling
other Squeezeboxes from a desk, end table, or even in-wall mounted
Touch. I know I have made some similar comments on how I have been using
my Beta Touch.

How about finding an SB3 or Receiver?

Of course by the time you find one the Touch will probably be
available. I can tell you this from using a Beta Touch, it is worth
waiting for. And as others have said, the built in Tiny SBS server is
only one of several features available and not required to use the Touch
in a number of situations it can service.

And as far as value, the cost is the same as the unit it is replacing
when the SB3 was brand new.

It wouldn't have been any cheaper, although it might have been released
about six months ago. It is a shame that it's not being sold to the
many people who will never use the built in server.

If there is no question about MySql being dropped by Oracle, why is
it then that a worldwide investigation is being held on what users think

Please read the limitations on Oracle's commitment on

If I was to develop a product I would be very reserved to use Mysql
because of these facts.

I hope I will be wrong in my opinion.

We aren't dropping MySQL, in fact the version of MySQL we ship with the
server is 3.5 years old, 5.0.22. Maybe we should update it one of these
days...

Because the Eurocrats see a chance to extract a big fee from a rich
American company, as they just did with Intel.

My bet, with zero inside knowledge, is that Oracle will put less and
less into MySql development over time.

A fork is one solution.

As are just using another open source RDBMS

Hi Andy,

What does it take for future versions to run on MySQL as I expect the
default DB to be SQlite? Will it be a choice during installation or will
it require a manual tweaking?

Regards,
Frank

[SlimDevices: Touch] amazon cancelled today

2010-01-19 Thread powellmi

my order from October 2009 was cancelled just today.
Main reason: No delivery date for Touch
Hard to believe that this product is not ready for shipping.
The HW looks great and SW on the Controller lis working good so far.
Several beta users of the Touch seem to be hapy - So what is the real
problem? Maybe Logitech is waiting to earn more money with this
product?!
I'm really looking to get the Tocu installed in my living room

Cheers

Michael

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] amazon cancelled today

2010-01-19 Thread DaveWr

I assume that Amazon will have internal rules about their order book
accounting, they probably need to clear orders that have indeterminate
fulfillment date.

In the current situation I believe you have three options:

Look elsewhere - I doubt you will find a multi-room solution that
operates better than Squeeze stuff. The issue is future confidence,
Logitech is a major player, they must be committed, they will get there.
IMHO while AndyG keeps going it will happen.

Wait - if you currently have nothing, then not that practical.

Substitute an SB3 - reliable, loads in use, very good (in my opinion
for my usage better). Either distribution for last stock or E**y.

I have a Linn DS system for my main HiFi but continue to use SB3s and
Booms for house coverage, and I will buy more. (I don't personally
believe in the Transporter future)

Hang in there.

Dave

BrianB;508275 Wrote:
Only thing I can think of is it is a long term issue, or a production
problem. I can't imagine they're making more money if it just comes out
with the current specs, same as the beta. That's be 6 months in lost
sales, including holiday. And now they're having preorders canceled.

As mentioned in other places, it's just that the software isn't
finished yet.

A lot of people might have pre-ordered it for the possibility to use
the built-in server and this is the part of the software that isn't
completely bug free yet. My beta testing unit has worked great in my
living room as a standalone player with external server for months.

If you don't want to use the built-in server you would probably be
satisfied with the current version but remember that other people that
have pre-ordered it might rely on the built-in server and will get a
device they can't use yet.

If you can afford it, get a Radio for the kitchen/bedroom now and get
the Touch for the listening room later when it's available, you are
probably going to want them both in the end anyway.

It's hard to know exactly when the Touch will be released, so I'd
suggest that anyone in desperate need for it get one of the existing
Squeezebox products and upgrade to the Touch later. This is a lot better
than just sit and wait while it gets delayed more than you expect. The
existing products are great and it's great to have more than one
Squeezebox, so you will probably not have any problem finding a use for
several units or selling the old unit when the Touch is available.
