Unfortunately there is no battery and there is no way to add one. I can
easily see how that happened. All previous Squeezebox hardware had to
run connected to an external server, if the hardware needed time it
just got it from the server. There was never any need for a battery.
When the hardware for the Touch was speced it was as a replacement for
the SB3, which has to run off an external server. This being able to
run a server on the Touch itself was an after thought, not a primary
design goal, I'm sure the concept of needing a battery backed up clock
just never even came up.

Anyway its theoretically not a problem as long as your network has a
connection to the internet, then it can get time from mysqueezebox.com
at boot time. If you have a connection to the internet and its NOT
getting time then we need to find out why. If you don't have a
connection to the internet, then you better keep the Touch running all
the time if you want to be able to display a clock.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Best external hard drive configuration for squeezebox touch with 20k+ flacs

2010-07-19 Thread rotho

I am using a self powered 1.5 Tb LaCie d2 Quadra HDD (formatted in FAT32
with Disk Utility on a Mac), containing around 450 Gb of Flac files
(approx. 1500 albums / 25000 songs).

AFAIC, with Tiny SC, when reading 16/44.1 files, I find the navigation
in the menus a bit slow (in comparison with the external server) and
there is just a rebuffering problem on the beginning of the first track
of an album, but I can live with that.

On the other hand, when reading 24/96 files with Tiny SC, I have big
rebuffering problems (even after the corrections made in the 7.5.1
version), and this must linked with the size of the collection : the
same files on the same HDD with only a couple of albums play
flawlessly.

And one last thing : the use of the Touch in standalone mode with the
Controller is far slower than with the external server...

I'd be inclined to uninstall 7.6 and use 7.5.2 You didn't mention your
network setip. If you are using a wireless router and modem then unplug
the power from your Touch, modem and router and leave it unplugged for a
minute or so. Then reconnect the power and go through the setup process
again. See if that helps.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch won't connect

2010-07-19 Thread iPhone

Think you are fine with SBS 7.6. The Touch is trying to log into
MySB.com so it can update to the newest Firmware.

Have a go at this. Try doing a back swipe to get off the spinny screen.
Then press and hold down the Back/Left Button until it drops back to the
Home Screen. Then goto SettingsAdvancedUpdate and select your Server
not MySB.com as the place you want the update from. Update and all
should be well.

I really hate this has to be connected to the Internet to setup the
Touch. They should have put a menu page in that asks if you have
Internet connectivity and if you answer NO, then a warning that if the
Touch is being setup for the first time it needs a connection to get a
proper Firmware Update, but allow those that are current to move
forward without Internet. A warning and instructions is far better then
being forced to HAVE to have an Internet connection.

Or have a warning page come up that says it is best to have an Internet
connection when setting up the Touch for the first time so it can get
the latest Firmware with an option to establish Connectivity or Proceed
Without it!

[SlimDevices: Touch] Will this setup work?

2010-07-19 Thread crimscrem

I have had incredible issues with my Touch when my external hard drive
is directly connected to the Touch. My Touch is hard-wired to my
internet. Last night, I attached my hard drive to my laptop and ran
the server through my laptop (wireless). Worked beautifully.
Squeezeplay worked beautifully as well. But I don't want a hard drive
connected to my laptop, so here's what I'd like to do:

Connect my hard drive to my old desktop (bought in 2003). Run the
Squeezebox Server off of my desktop. I'm confident that my Touch will
work well. But here's the thing I want to be able to do. I want to be
able to control the Touch remotely using my laptop (and Squeezeplay).
Will that work?

I'm wondering if Squeezeplay only works on a computer that is also
running the Squeezebox server. Thank you.

You can do that: Squeezeplay will connect to servers other than
localhost. Remember SqueezePlay is the same software as is on the
Touch/Radio/Controller with some platform tweaks.

If you use a 'real' server (ie, not the touch) you also get the webui
which is even more accessible.

 R.

Can't really put it into words how strongly I feel about this subject.
It has killed two of the Commercial applications I had worked on for
months when I first found out about the Touch. Granted its only for
1000 to 3000 Touch units which volume wise means nothing to Logitech
but would have meant about 150K to 500K for us.

We did a field test with 5 full setups and its just not worth the
headaches from having to pre-setup or actually do onsite customer
installs with Touch units already connected once for Firmware update
instead of just being able to ship it to the clients (well over 90% of
these installs won't have Internet which is why this Touch local server
setup is perfect for them, but Logitech requires Internet before using
Touch). And then hope the client never has to do a factory reset, those
calls drove us crazy.

How hard would it have been to have the Touch look to see if there was
a local server first with a greater Firmware then was shipped and get
an update from that instead of demanding Internet access? One business
model has servers in the setup that would have been up to date (have
higher firmware to DL then Touch ships with) and would have eliminated
both the Internet requirement issue, having every client have to have
and setup a MySB.com account (hard to do without Internet), resolve the
issue if a client needs to do a factory reset and allow direct shipping
to the client.

Yes, I have found some ways around this but clients don't went to hear
about complicated workarounds that non-technical employees might have
to do. They just want it to work like we demoed it to them all the
time. In hindsight it looks like we would never have been able to get
our hands on 3000 Touch units anyway. Pity, it would have been a fun
project. The really sad thing is, we couldn't do this with Sonos or
another NMP if we wanted to and cost wasn't an issue, they just don't
have any model like the Touch!

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] operating question about power-off

2010-07-19 Thread m1abrams

Why do you unplug the power? The touch uses very little power. I
completely understand wanting to reduce ones power usage but unplugging
a device like the touch every night is not really saving much power at
all. The touch uses ~5W with drive connected. So 365days * 24hours *
5W = ~44kWH . My current power cost is $0.15 per kWH which for the US
is on the high side of power costs. At my rate it costs me a whole
$6.60 to power the Touch for an entire year.

Esoteric bug - with 7.5, and fixed in the 7.6 nightlies (though might
have introduced syncing problems, not sure if related).

With SOME NPR streams, the header (thank you for supporting OPB...)
is malformed or something, and messes up the streaming on the Touch (
Radio, I believe). AND it only happens if you're in sync with another
player (my case, a SB2 in the kitchen).

7.6 fixes it, but not completely, so after the header, the 2 streams
are about 100ms apart. This is hackable, by delaying the SB2 by 100ms,
but then ALL music is 100ms delayed. Ugh.

As much as I love the touch, and put like 30 hours into helping get
SuperDateTime working on it with CustomClock, I also have a 5 month old
that limits my hacking time. :-)

Anyway, the bug is here:

you just have music files on the disk. For example if you have a music

blurps and gunshots etc will show up in your music library and all the
image files will be converted into into cover art, probably not what

Hi all, wondering if it would work OK if those 'other' files are

Other than slowing down the scan, ya think they'll cause TinySC to

It may be all right it may not. It depends on how the scanner
classifies the file types. I tried a drive with a backup on it and it
took an hour and a half to go through all the backup files. The problem
is that its going to do a scan of the whole disk every time you boot the
Touch, thus in my case it would have been an hour and a half wait before
I could play music every time it booted.

You can certainly try it, but its not a particularly good thing to do.
A backup disk is probably the worst to share with music, there can be
hundreds of thousands of files and many of those could very well wind
up having extensions that the scanner is interested in. Its just not
really a good idea.
