I'm french, so I have all kind of accented characters (é, è, à, ê...)
in both my tags and my filenames, and it works for me. On my Touch, I
only have FLAC files and I've very careful about my setup.

One of the reason I only use FLAC and Vorbis is my mistrust for ID3
tags, I feel that between the incompatible versions and various
restrictions, ID3 is a mess. ID3v1 is strictly ASCII, no 'foreign'
characters, so you may want to make sure you don't have ID3v1 tags.
However, only ID3v2 version v2.4 truly solve internationalisation with
proper support of UTF-8. I personally don't know what to recommend,
using only ID3v2 v2.4 would seems the way to go but it's not supported
by every tool.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Id3
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/BeginnersGuideToTagging

Also, TinySB requires care, planning and patience to work properly,
especially with the number of files you are trying to use. I've shared
my experience, you may want to implement my advices :

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82070

Lastly, I've head that 7.6 has optimisation for the database that may
help with large collection, however I have not tried that version...

Good luck...

Jean

If you have not done so already, consider investing in a second hard
drive to store a back-up of the FLAC's. I do this and I store it
"off-site" in the trunk of my car.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] SBT with USB Hard Drive

2011-06-06 Thread Mnyb

another tip is to organise music like one folder per album
/artist/album/track .

it is never a good idea to have one folder with 25k files in it .

7.6 has solved most unicode character problems, but as it is a beta it
can be to buggy sometimes for other reasons..

It can be done, but why do you want/need to do this? That might help
answer how well it will work and how much effort it would take.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] SBT with USB Hard Drive

2011-06-06 Thread Brokator

Thank you toby10 and dasmueller, both of you are very kind that you're
trying to help but i already gave it up. Right now im using the
7.5.4-r9408 firmware. I also tried that beta versions available at the
development site and older versions too. As for the folder item - its
not an folder browser, it uses database for storing/indexing the
folder/file names and you can see them just after the Tiny server start
because it is the first search done by the db engine. I can see them too
- until the Tiny server crash in the indexing process. I even probably
know why its still crashing again and again - its probably caused by
the mixed id3 tags and non standard ascii characters (im not native
english speaker as you may noticed from my bad english :-) ) in the
misc places like file/folder/id3 text info (ntfs disk format, tried two
different 2.5" usb hdd, wd 1TB and samsung 500GB). I dont have aeons to
sort every id3 tag in my archive. Folder player works different way -
it just only reads >actual directory< files and subdirs names to RAM
everytime you enter that directory with no db server involved. You are
also right that many of us dont experience those problems, probably
because a perfect shape of their archives. I believe that my Touch is
in perfect hw condition, like yours. As the temporary solution right
now im using my pc as server (Win7 64bit, i3, Server version
7.5.4-r32171) with all related pros and cons - i need to start that pc
every time i want to listen to my music (which drives me mad) but at
least it works. Sometimes im experiencing that "empty" bug when trying
to play some of my files.. Many of those bugs are already reported and
maybe they will be fixed in the future fw releases but i truly dont
believe, that Tiny server included in the Touch to support USB drives
will ever be stable and fully usable without restrictions.
Finally im sorry about that negative note that you must feel from my
post but after reading thru almost all related posts in this forum and
spending many many hours trying to run Tiny server i feel just like
that..

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Lacie Starck ext powered 2TB hard drive and SBT

2011-06-06 Thread toby10

Some basic Touch USB / SD Troubleshooting

USB or SD card devices

- Check the formatting of the device, Touch supported formats: FAT16,
FAT32, NTFS, ext2, ext3
- Touch can only see/use a single partition, format as a single
partition
- Remove any included device “utilities” as these can cause issues
- Make sure there is at least 10% free space (20% even better)
- Remove any non-music related files (videos, documents, programs,
pictures, data, etc…)
- Attach device directly to your computer and run basic maintenance
utilities (disk cleanup, error checking, defrag)
- Place a small, single folder of music on the device for initial
testing (why have it scanning for hours if it isn’t going to complete
the scan)

USB HD

- Try an external USB power source, HD power supply or a powered USB
hub. (Touch may not have enough bus power to power the USB HD)
- Try a different USB cable
- Sleep mode can cause issues (may have to completely rescan HD every
time it “wakes”)
- If you turn OFF Touch or HD, or unplug HD, Touch must completely
rescan the entire HD
