Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] NAS + crossover UTP cable + SBT
well some have thier powerline adapters working just fine by themself some don't ( there is a bunch of makes and modells) so a switch migth not be needed, both kind of stories are avaible on this forum. Another popular server option is a small netbook. A simple option would be powerline ethernet to existing router ( hopefully it works ok wo switch ) Run server on an existing computer or try the onboard tiny server ( if you can live without web-UI, plugins and playlists >100 tracks etc) . You said wifi coverage was bad ? How bad, it migth work as is with an atached usb drive if you dont expect to stream radio or files over the network. if it can see the router and have internet conection it migth be enough. Btw many think the the server have to run 24/7 gulping power, nobody is listening to music 24/7 ,modern computers hibernate and a squeezebox can send wake on lan commands waking the pc. Nothing is stopping anyone from turning of the serving pc while sleeping or being at work etc. But it is very hard to speculate ? Where in the world are you did not logitech us have a 30day trial and return policy ? can you find a dealer where you can try the stuff and return if it was not for you. Squeezeboxes may not be the rigth thing for everyone, they are a bit more than a large mp3 player. if you only want a large mp3 player would not an iPod dock that conects to the stereo be something to consider ? eventually you must try for yourself on this forum you can find people happilly using the Touch as is with ateched usb drive with 4000mp3's and people with 14 different squeezeboxes and servers with 6 internal drives and 40 tracks -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] NAS + crossover UTP cable + SBT
Yeah the crossover is probably not the best idea, Thanks for the warning on the powerline ethernet, I was definitely thinking of that road as well. I guess it's possible to do what you're saying. I am just feeling a bit annoyed that all I want is a large mp3 player with a screen, and now I am already facing upgrading my router, getting a nas, getting an extra switch and powerline ethernet adaptors on top of the squeezebox itself. It seems like a lot of extra power drain too for something I just want to switch on and off. I could go down the media player route, but then I will need the tv as a display, something I hoped not to have to. -- deiurg deiurg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=47448 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88247 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Fact #1: W7, Mac OS X 10.5 and Ubuntu 9.4 detected only one partition. No hidden or something. Fact #2: after reformatting the USB stick under Ubuntu, one primary FAT32 partition, SBT recognized it. Thanks for the help, folks! P.S. (Rants) This is retarded. Is it really that hard to recognize proper partition? 2 years old Ubuntu did it - I do not see why SBT can't. Probably a dozen lines script in hot-plug code somewhere: pick the largest partition as "the partition." (More rants) But considering that SBT requires USB drive to be properly ejected, they do seem to have problems with their Linux expertise: it is possible to mount file systems in sync mode to allow unplug of hot-plug devices without eject. Worked like that on my OpenSUSE in office for God only knows how many years now.
