[SlimDevices: Touch] How to turn off SB touch without losing connection to local server

2011-11-23 Thread raulmoras

Hi,

I have a Squeezebox Touch working stand-alone with a self-powered usb
HD.
From time to time when I turn it off, it loses its connection with the
local server and I have to restart the SB server and rescan everything
again.
Am I doing anything wrong? Is there a right way to turn it off?
Thanks,

Raul

2011-11-23 Thread toby10

Well, it depends on what you mean by off?

If just using the off button (IR remote or touch screen) this is really
just a Standby, not really off. Nor should this cause the Touch's
server to stop.

But if you are actually removing power for the Touch then yes this will
cause the Touch server to need to reboot at power on and then must
rescan the entire HD.

Another issue might be if your HD goes to sleep due to inactivity. This
may cause the Touch's server to think it is a new HD requiring a
rescan.

Is your HD going to sleep? Are there any drive utilities on that HD
that may be causing this?

Thanks Toby10 for your answer.

I ment standby when said off. I just want to stop the music and
come back later. Sometimes the server is disconnected.

Perhaps is the sleep mode on the HD...but isnt it good to let the HD
rest when not in use?

Im using a seagate expansion portable drive 500Gb connected through an
powered usb hub. But I didnt erase those apps that came in the HD.

How do I disable the sleep mode? On the Touch or on the HD?

Thanks again,
Raul

Go to your www.MySqueezeBox.com account, go to App Gallery, see what is
there.
Usually the offered Apps are based on your location so if it is listed
it should be available to you. But this is probably not 100% accurate
all the time.

Also Erland has has written a patch/applet which can be installed
directly onto the Touch to force it to not scan. How this works, what
is required, etc... I have no idea.
But might be worth some reading to possibly stop the Touch rescanning
your HD.

[SlimDevices: Touch] If I got a touch...

2011-11-23 Thread bassedolie

Hi all,

I am considering buying a SB touch to add in with my current marantz
amp/cd combo player. I was wondering what the best way to run it with.

I don't particularly want to turn on my pc to use it and neither do I
want to get a NAS drive so either an external hard drive or a small
number of high capacity SD cards/usb sticks.

Pretty much all my music is regular cds which I have ripped as wma
lossless in Windows Media Player. From my understanding the Touch can
only support this format when streaming so I will need to convert to
FLAC. I have tried it in foobar and it seems to work. Anything I should
be careful of regarding tags etc? I care little for album art images
personally.

One thing I realised I can do is whilst converting all my music to FLAC
is upsample it in SOX from 16/44 to 16/96 (except for the odd hdcd I
have I see no reason to use 24/96?). Would this be beneficial for the
SB's DAC or should I just leave it in original form. Certainly would
use up a fair amount of extra space to upsample it but beyond that it's
not really extra hassle as it needs to be converted anyway.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] If I got a touch...

2011-11-23 Thread m1abrams

The best way to go is have a dedicated music server. While Logitech
added the feature to be standalone many here feel that was a poor idea.
The hardware really is not powerful enough to reliably run both the
server and client.

If you read the forums here you will see many people have issues
running the touch in standalone mode. I know some people are very
successful but more are banging their heads against the wall.

 Thanks in advance

*most* people will point out that upsampling the files will be of no
benefit. The TOUCH *can* work with a USB drive plugged in, running the
internal tinySbS and playing FLAC files. Search this forum for
suggestions on USB drives, etc. Basically, use a USB drive that gets
its own power, set it NOT to go into standby mode, leave it always
attached to the TOUCH (otherwise everytime you connect it a complete
scan will take place), and when you do the intial setup/scan, this can
take a very long time (hours and hours). Don't try to do anything else
with the touch while the scan is taking place. And make sure your USB
drive only has one partition. The Touch doesn't deal with some of the
2nd partitions included on some USB drives (that act like CD rom
drives, contain programs, etc.)

And best to have ONLY music files or album art on the USB drive. It
will scan the entire drive, even if only part of drive is music.

Bottom line, get the right USB drive, set it up properly, and don't
think you'll be plugging and unplugging usb drive often.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Streaming 24/96 Flac

2011-11-23 Thread PBass_Forever

I've got a Touch that I've been using to stream 24/96 flac files of
vinyl transfers. I've implimented the Soundcheck's Mods and had the
Squeeze Server configured to do the flac decoding. The Squeeze Server
is running on an iMac and the Touch is connected to the network by
direct ethernet. I'm using an Asus Eeee Pad tablet running Squeeze
Controller to control everything.

I have liked the sound (using both the analogue out and an external
DAC) but the files always seemed to sound better when I played them
directly on the MAC to a USB audio interface (M-Audio FastTrack Pro)
that I use as my monitor while doing the vinyl transfers.

Today I was looking at the information screen for the file being
played. as displayed on the Squeeze Controller screen.

It indicated that the file was PCM with a data-rate of about 3Mbits
(which is about right for 24/96 audio) but then in brackets it said
(downconverted to 1.4Mbits) which I believe is 16/44.

I went back to Squeeze Server and changed the advanced configuration to
have it pass the Flac files to the Touch for decoding. My information
screen now indicates that the file is Flac with a data-rate of app
3Mbits. No downconversion happening!!

The sound has improved significantly. The sound stage has opened up
greatly and the sound is much smoother. Like going from 2D to 3D.

Moral.. be careful if you are streaming hi-res files. I'm not sure
how the Flac decoding is happening within the Suqeeze Server, or if
there are settings for it, but it appears that it can downconvert your
hi-res stuff to 1.4M. The next DAC I get will have to have incoming
data-rate indicator lights so that I can spot problems like this
faster.

Well I don't want to rain on your significant improvement parade.

I see the same message about downconverting to 1.4mbits, but my dac
still lights up 24/96, so I'm thinking it's just a cosmetic issue.

I guess there's the slim possibility it's down converting to 16/44 and
then back up again.

Yeah, that value is just indicating it's being transcoded and doesn't
reflect the true bitrate. We should probably remove it, it causes a lot

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Streaming 24/96 Flac

2011-11-23 Thread PBass_Forever

Ik, I'll do more comparing but the difference seemed so significant that
I didn't pursue it any further. The difference seemed identical to the
difference I observed when listening to 24/96 files directly from my
iMac's optical (SPDIF) out to a DacMagic, that I use to own, while
forcing the output from 96 to 48 and back. Same opening up of the
sound stage. This experiment is what convinced me to by the
Touch.. I felt getting the 24/96 files to my main sound system was
the best thing I could do to improve my sound. I even sold the
DacMagic because it wasn't an improvement over the Touch's DAC.
