Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] To NAS or not to NAS
Here was my setup: two Squeezebox Receivers with Controller, Squeezebox Touch, LMS running on a Windows PC, music files stored on the Windows PC. Before that, I had LMS running on a Western Digital My Book Live (1tb), music files stored on the same. The latter setup was slow but quiet; the former setup was fast but noisy. Setting up the SBRs was fiddly, and the SBT was hidden in the back of my stereo cabinet -- who needs a touchscreen when all you need is a music player and your mobile is your remote? Last fall I built two players using RPi2b, HiFi Dac+ and HiFi Digi+. At first, I didn't know what I was doing but there is a lot of information on the forum about how to build the players and set them up so the first try took me about half an hour -- and at least half of that time was devoted to figuring out how to put the case together. The Pi/Digi+ runs Max2Play and LMS on a 8gb microSD card. Music files are stored out of sight and sound on the My Book Live. The Pi/HiFi Dac+ runs piCorePlayer 1.21. Setting up the players -- Max2Play and piCorePlayer -- is through a Web interface. Really easy to do. Once the players are set up, your running LMS on the Pi/Max2Play finds them automatically. What surprised me is how efficiently the My Book Live serves the music files. Retrieval is nearly instantaneous on my network (all wired, no wifi) from both of my players (upstairs and downstairs). If you like the Touch form factor (the touchscreen, the stand, the remote etc.) by all means start with that. However, I believe that the SBT is more player than needed if that is all you use it for; and unlike the Pi/Max2Play, the SBT won't run LMS. So you are still have to figure out how you are going to run LMS (NAS? PC? HTPC? something else?) and where your music files will be stored (USB drive? NAS? PC? HTPC? something else?). Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] To NAS or not to NAS
re 1: - let LMS start automatically when the PC starts up - let the PC fall into sleep mode when it's not used, there's a plugin (to be activated on the LMS settings page) that prevents this as long as a player is on - enable wake-on-lan (WOL) on the PC (you can get more details how to configure this if you wish) - when a player is switched on, it sends a WOL packet to wake up the PC reinholdk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=36070 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105439 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Answer: 1) leave it to run when you start the PC, no point in it being on unless you wake in the middle of the night  and want some tunes. 2) yes LMS can be run on a Qnap, but at the moment that is a step to far, patience, Grasshopper..:p Man in a van's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=43627 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105439 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

When Logitech build "new" Squeezeboxes they also did a job to involve NAS builders to add LMS into their NAS. Only the Netgear ReadyNAS ever got "official" support from us. All others have done it on their own, or based on some community work. Nothing has changed in this regard. -- Michael ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

When Logitech build "new" Squeezeboxes they also did a job to involve NAS builders to add LMS into their NAS. Most of the NASses (that supoort some LMS) cant use the outofthebox Version/Paket from LMS direct - so you need a NAS that has Power and supports the actual Updates. Since Logitech pull the plug most (afaik all of them) need new LMS Pakets and the only way to get them is 3rd Party updates from some customers here. (Take a look to some Threads) *BUT* If you spend some time to rip & Tag your Stuff, a NAS is always the WAY to go for Backups and you can/should also put your Photos there. SO "my" Tipp is - get your Touch running, add some small PC/Rpi2(3) to run LMS and if you want a backup device go for a NAS (depends if your able to built your "own" or buy some.) I would prefer something thats opensource in case the supplier pull the plug you can alter it. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] To NAS or not to NAS
And why not just consider buying a RaspberryPi, install www.max2play.com, plug a hard drive and use it for server/files only. Currently I am using an Intel NUC, it does work great, but I am more and more considering moving to max2play. I believe it's even more cost effective (power use). I've been testing it with a pi3, the response is great, you get all features, and even more as you can use airplay. NAS was the way forward 5 year ago for Squeezebox. Now, there are so many other cheaper possibilities. Touch + Cambridge Audio 651R & DAC Magic + Q Acoustics Concept 40 / Touch + Onkyo TX-SR309 + Morel Applause MKII / SB2, SB3, and Duet / 2 Boom / 7 Radios / Ipeng & SqueezePad / Windows 8.1 + LMS 7.9.0 - 1415373344 on Intel NUC i5 didjean's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2900 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105439 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
