extension and better imaging? Is only jitter, or is there more to it?

Since the actual data won't be affected, it has to be timing - jitter
effects. This would also mean that your DAC has poor jitter rejection
performance. Data integrity on all Squeezeboxes has been proved by DTS
cinema stream data, any changes and it doesn't decode.

I doubt the Touch will be made capable of 24/192 but that is not the
issue.

Recordings are being release in 24/192 master format. Any resampling
will have a deleterious effect on them. New additive errors, new
applied filters. Audibility of same is personal.

I think the fundamental truth is if you want to play 24/192 files as

Is there any restriction on what IR commands it will actually blast?

Also, can anyone suggest a resource on IR hardware, and the command
structures? There seems to be precious little information on how this
all works. I would really like to understand a little better.

1) The Touch does have IR out on the headphone socket.
2) It will output some IR codes if connected to an IR emitter
3) I believe straight wired should work, but Felix will probably chip
in
4) It won't do ANY blasting in terms of repeating IR codes at all at
this time. It needs the RAW capability within the firmware, which is
not currently available.

It will only send codes as described in the previous reference I gave.
These being simple codes for volume and On/Off, restricted as per

Touch will be at launch, it has come down in price over time.

Besides, revamp kind of underplays the amount of effort/cost that
would be involved in moving the SB3 to LCD:

 - some of the components in the SB3 may well not be available any more
 - other will be coming to the end of their production lifetime
 - circuit redesign and layout will be needed to account for these
 missing components
 - there are far more people around who can write Linux C or learn LUA
than there are who can program the exotic CPU in the SB3

Redesign is a fact of electronic life due to obsolescence. The fact
remains that the replacement of a very expensive component, the VFD with
LCD should reduce BOM costs significantly.

Circuit redesign is obviously something Logitech are very capable of.
The architectural changes, move to LUA nd TinySC etc. seem less
successful in terms of cost benefit analysis. Slim devices should be
cheaper than medium / fat devices.

Exotic? embedded CPUs are a way of life for many domestic products.
Embedded controllers are very cost effective. Don't want a full Linux
suite in my CD player

slap an LCD on the ageing IP3K platform, so a 'revamping' of the SB3
would not be trivial. But the product direction is clearly away from
slim clients and toward 'fat' clients. That does involve higher costs
for the clients, but also opens the possibility of lower total costs,
eg, for all those users who have been saying I want to play my music
but I don't want to have to turn on my PC. This is presumably intended
to appeal more to new buyers than to those of us who already have a
 music server running.

I think with the limitations TinySC has, then total system cost
reduction will only apply for a few. Anybody wanting multi-room
capability is repeatably paying for a simplified server capability.
IMHO it would have made more sense to minimize player cost (it is only a
user interface, audio out, display and touch interface) and OEM a server
like Sheevaplug. We could have continued with current plug ins etc.

Anyway, I am sure that the Touch will find it's own market niche, and
the good news is that the Duet continues.

'smart clients' like Touch would have wider market appeal, which I
 assume is Logitech's main objective.

Because TinySC can't handle the transcoding issues for playback of non
native streams, so major limitations on radio stations etc. I think
however, the Touch in a new world, no old players, will find significant
favour in new startup users, and if plug-ins migrate to applets (too
early to tell) then Touch should suit expanded larger systems.

On the flip side for Logitech the choice of a Linux playback
environment, and the licensing will also mean several astute users
looking for new hosts for Squeezeplay, trying to substitute Logitech
hardware. This has always been a concern of mine.

 And

“To really get the most benefit of an HDtracks music file you could
burn a CD-R and play it on your home Hi-Fi system.”

 And

“HD files are the same thing as purchasing a CD but without the disc.”

 https://www.hdtracks.com/index.php?file=staticpagepagename=faq#1

So even though the downloads at that website are encoded at 24/88.2 or
96, apparently that company is starting with the orchestra label’s CD’s,
then just copying them to a computer and then upsampling from 44.1 to
either 88.2 or 96 and converting the bit depth from 16 to 24.But,
the quality can’t be improved by this method. The quality will be the
 same as the source material.

I say “apparently” because there is no explanation as to the source of
the downloadable files on the website.

What this company is doing may be misleading. If all you are going to
end up with is “the same quality as a store-purchased CD”, it seems the
upsampling is for marketing purposes only to laypeople without the
requisite knowledge to understand what is really being sold.

When the website advises burning a CD from the download, you are again
 at 16/44.1.

Please don't mislead people. The HDTracks general FAQ comment - it is
the same as CD is a comment to differentiate from MP3 or AAC files
downloaded from Amazon or Apple etc.

In that way all their downloads are high resolution (at least 44.1
16bit lossless). They also have higher resolution masters. I accept
their FAQ is inadequate, but I hope you are not suggesting that they are
just upsampling.

Sorry don't see why Logitech should get an easy ride. Let's not get
into fanboy syndrome.

The Squeezebox system is great. But Logitech management has
significantly redirected skilled development resources to other
projects, whilst adding in some contractors. This at a time of maximum
change in the portfolio and the technology it uses.

Cutting slack for 'we underestimated, it will be delayed' is
reasonable. But actions since these delays took hold are management
controlled.

I have worked my whole career in the technical product sector. I
cannot believe that the attitude to their customer channels is so
cavalier. If the distribution channels lose confidence or allegiance
then we all suffer. The products the few that frequent these forums
love and continue to purchase, will not keep the business afloat.

What is really impressive is the way that the now restructured
resources working on the project remain upbeat and productive.

I assume that Amazon will have internal rules about their order book
accounting, they probably need to clear orders that have indeterminate
fulfillment date.

In the current situation I believe you have three options:

Look elsewhere - I doubt you will find a multi-room solution that
operates better than Squeeze stuff. The issue is future confidence,
Logitech is a major player, they must be committed, they will get there.
IMHO while AndyG keeps going it will happen.

Wait - if you currently have nothing, then not that practical.

Substitute an SB3 - reliable, loads in use, very good (in my opinion
for my usage better). Either distribution for last stock or E**y.

I have a Linn DS system for my main HiFi but continue to use SB3s and
Booms for house coverage, and I will buy more. (I don't personally
believe in the Transporter future)

Hang in there.

Product lines that depend on international sales need to meet energy
