 Hi all,
One thing I realised I can do is whilst converting all my music to FLAC
is upsample it in SOX from 16/44 to 16/96 (except for the odd hdcd I
have I see no reason to use 24/96?). Would this be beneficial for the
SB's DAC or should I just leave it in original form. Certainly would
use up a fair amount of extra space to upsample it but beyond that it's
not really extra hassle as it needs to be converted anyway.

 Thanks in advance

Probably not beneficial with the Touch because it already has a Delta
Sigma DAC.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Is the Touch limiting my sound quality?

2011-10-29 Thread SuperQ

+1 to the other comments about iTunes for ripping.

- ALAC is a good choice if you're set on using iTunes.
- Make sure to enable sound check to add gain tags. Not needed for
single album listening, but essential for random playback.
- Make sure to enable secure ripping in order to avoid bad rips.

I personally stay away from iTunes for music.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Is the Touch limiting my sound quality?

2011-10-28 Thread SuperQ

Most likely you are having issues with volume level calibration. Many
devices like the Denon CD player have very loud op-amps. They will
sound better because they are louder. The Touch is a well designed
neutral DAC without the usual over driving.

It's almost impossible to calibrate this with your ears. The human ear
is just not designed for calibrating SPL.

http://ben.nerp.net/noise/pink-noise-30.flac

Write that file as an audio track to play in your CD player. Then use
an SPL meter or voltmeter across your speaker terminals. That should
tell you how much output difference there is between the Denon and the
Touch.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Speaker/Amp set up for touch

2011-10-28 Thread SuperQ

I would go with the A5 speakers. I use the A2 speakers for my desk at
work. They're great for small near-field listening, but they have
about the same output power as a Boom.

Not really good enough to fill a room.

If you want something really amazing for a small room you could get
some Dynadio BM-5A powered monitors:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/696917-REG/Dynaudio_Acoustics_995001311_PAIR__BM_5A_MKII_7_.html

Worth the investment.

 ext3 is good enough.

Why does not Mac OS natively support most linux file systems while Mac

Yes, ext4 is very much better than ext3. They made some major
improvements to the (meta)data layout.

MacOS isn't really *NIX itself. It's a layered system of several
different APIs (BSD, Cocoa, NeXT), with a Mach kernel. It is POSIX
compliant, but so is Windows.

I really wish I could read ext[234] on MacOS. It would simplify my
external drive access.

For ext4 we would just use whatever driver is in the kernel, but we

HFS+, which appears to need a commercial ($$$) driver, isn't going to

I would recommend ext3 for best performance, or FAT32 if you need

Both ext4 and hfsplus modules have been in the kernel tree for a while
(2+ years). It's too bad that no kernel updates will be made to the
Touch.

What kernel is the touch running?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] ALAC native support on Touch

I have seen some discussion on this elsewhere but I'm not sure if I have
 seen a definitive answer.

I understand that ALAC is supported natively on the Touch. At least if
I connect a USB drive which contains some ALAC files to the Touch, the
SB server on the Touch plays them.

However when I play an ALAC using the SB sever on my Mac Mini the file
seems to get transcoded to FLAC. If I go to More info for the track
it says something like Bitrate: 850kbps VBR (converted to 705 kbps
FLAC). Also there doesn't seem to be an option in File Types in
Settings to set Apple Lossless to native. I have a Boom pointing at
the same server and was wondering whether the fact that the Boom cannot
play ALAC natively meant the server was transcoding to FLAC. However my
Boom is switched off and is not synced with the Touch.

Is there any way of getting SBS on my Mac to play ALAC natively?

 Mike

You might be able to make adjustments to the convert.conf file to
enable native playback. This will only work if you do not have any
older generation squeezebox players as they will not be able to
playback correctly. This is probably why SBS defaults to transcoding
to FLAC. Because ALAC and FLAC are both lossless, there is no harm in
this behavior.

able to demonstrate this in any repeatable way that I'm aware of.

It would be really interesting to put a Touch and a Duet in your system
and use Audio DiffMaker (http://www.libinst.com/Audio%20DiffMaker.htm)
to measure the analog output of your DACmagic. In theory there may be
some difference, but DiffMaker will prove it.

Can you post more info on those speakers? I'm not sure what the
inductor you're talking about is doing. Normally I see inductors used
as low pass filters in a crossover network. I don't think this could be
done correctly with a single amplifier. You would need a bi-amp setup
and the EQ work being done at the amplifier stage for the woofer.
