*hifidan*: glad the Silflex worked out for you. It is a technically good
cable, all the important things are done properly and about as well as
they can be done. Some prefer fewer but larger diameter glass fibers,
that's pretty much the only real argument re other premium-constructed
types.

I do not use my Silflex from the Touch, I slightly prefer my best
coaxial cable since it is also about as technically well-done as you can
get for a device having an RCA connector S/PDIF output. The Touch's
Toslink output has ~4X the jitter of the coaxial output, IIRC, but many
people are more susceptible to jitter than others and it is certainly
not the be-all defining digital audio characteristic.

Caad: I am "afraid" to open up and mess with my Touch's guts. I only
have one and can't get another for close to a reasonable price. I really
count on my Touch and value it a lot, wish I had got another, strictly
as a backup because I couldn't use two of them -at the time-, but now I
could... :(

Though I have been an electronics hobbyist since the late '60s, and
aren't afraid to mess with things in general, I have to admit that it's
more difficult for me now to play with SMD stuff and really close pin
spacings. I have a binocular scope etc. for doing this stuff, and I do
work with "larger" SMD stuff, but I don't find it pleasant at all i.e.
not a hobby thing if hobbies are meant to be fun (?? lol).

hifidan: that's a pretty pricey coax cable, as they go. And a pretty
cheap Toslink cable, as they go. Been a while since I used a Toslink
with the Touch, but that shrill high end sounds like what I recall from
plastic Tos. Just not an "easy" sound with this BDA-1/Touch interface
compared to the coax (even a -much- cheaper coax cable). I think you
will find glass Tos better, a more fair comparison. Still, the coax will
probably be preferable to you with this DAC, you could look in the ~$50
range if the $500 one is just on trial or something, no need to go
crazy, I didn't and am plenty happy with it.

You could maybe ask on one of the forums about what Toslink cables were
found to work decently with the BDA-1, maybe Audio Circle or such.
Usually (meaning not BDA-1-specific) people just say to get a -Silflex-
and be done with it if you must use Toslink for some reason.

I 100% understand why you didn't remove the TT3.0, as it's a bit of a
pain to reinstall. Not really that difficult though if you've been
playing with it for a while and have a "system"...many/most of us here
did that pre-EDO.

I'm not going to say TT3.0 does nothing because IMO it does plenty, it
is clearly audible when you change things (some things...) but it's so
very system dependent from top to bottom that it's almost impossible to
share info meaningfully. That's what we found here anyway, in effect
when you boil all the arguments etc. down. :)

IMO you should start from scratch and install just the EDO. I am like
Mnyb in that the Touch is also a handy little Busybox Linux plaything. I
have a few custom mods too; some I remember offhand are how some things
appear and to get the WOL to work properly with the PCs here, little
things like that but nothing significant to sonics.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Digital out

2014-02-13 Thread cfraser

IME the BDA-1's coaxial inputs sound significantly better than the
Toslink, with the Touch or anything else. Have used both, with varying
grades of coaxial and Toslink cables; you should use a quality one, but
don't have to get even close to ridiculous (e.g. Blue Jeans coaxial or
average glass Tos is fine, you *will* hear plastic Tos). You should note
that in the audiophile world Toslink is usually given attention/status
below coaxial S/PDIF in almost all (more expensive) DACs. Because
Toslink has been traditionally so cheaply implemented in source devices,
and you can't really (externally) fix a bad source after the fact. The
coaxial S/PDIF output on the Touch measures (and sounds) a lot better
than you might expect from the price.

BDA-1 digital inputs in order of quality:
AES/EBU..coaxial..Toslink.USB. The dots represent
IMO approximately relatively how far apart the quality is. :) If you
have the BDA-2 then I presume the USB would be different, but on the
BDA-1 it's only a last resort or for some convenience. The BDA's "metal"
inputs are galvanically isolated, so the Tos doesn't even gain anything
audible from that IME. But really, with all this DAC stuff, you have to
try it yourself. For all I know my "custom" Touch PS is doing most of
the good stuff re coax vs Tos from it.

^ This is not always so simple. I spent a lot of time with similar probs
about a year ago. Everything, and I mean everything, was set up
correctly if I had access to it (I'm not new to any of this stuff). As
somebody else said, the root problem turned out to be my PC's BIOS. You
should know that a lot of BIOSs aren't set up to handle WOL properly in
a modern network (wired in my case), so it'll never work 100% correctly.
I can say that ALL the Touch-related firmware and software (incl. LMS)
is not the problem, so don't waste a lot of time playing with that, just
set up the obvious WOL items properly.

Luckily there was an "optional" (Dell-speak for "we admit nothing") BIOS
update for me that of course never mentioned that one of the things it
fixed was WOL. Just saying...try to research your BIOS, and a hint (it
was a year ago!, best I can remember) is to search for a pro remote
network-maintenance software product that is supposed to work with your
PC. If one exists for you, the manual will tell you how to set WOL up,
what BIOS/settings/etc. you need. My "music server" PC wasn't mentioned,
yours might be, the manual DL was free, it had generally useful to me
WOL info anyways.

Not sure if you were responding to me, but if so, yes I did get the
192/24 PCM streaming to work just fine. I don't even have any 192/24
music files that I would normally listen to, and don't know if I'd pay
extra for that over 96/24 even. But it's nice to have it working anyway,
since the way the LMS and FW is now is probably as far as it's going to
go, so might as well install it...

It took a while to get working though, my own fault. About a year ago I
had been playing with some of the kajillion settings my main router has.
Probably with TT3.0 back then, something with QoS. I had left the
settings as they were because it wasn't doing any harm, but at >9Mbps
with 192/24 on the Touch's LAN branch, whatever I had done back then was
causing issues, I don't know how, probably with the internal router
processing for it. I'm trying to do too much with the router's little
processor I guess. Yet it didn't affect the 10Mbps Touch Network Test
results however I had it set up, which delayed me paying attention to
the router setup as the possible problem cause.

I'm using the same DAC. I assume you're using S/PDIF from the Touch.

I tried the LMS nightly dated Jan. 13 and it wouldn't even play any of
the 192/24 FLAC test tracks I tried (2L demos) with decoding at the
server end. Never mind give 192/24 to the DAC via S/PDIF. Wanted to
check those before I bought any 192/24 albums... They play fine if the
FLACs are decoded on the Touch of course, that's not new. I ran the
Touch's Network Test at 10Mbps again and no errors reported, so
shouldn't be an ultimate bitrate problem at 192/24.

Oh yeah, for some reason I forget I reverted a long time ago to EDO 0.6,
I forgot that wasn't the newest version. Could that be a problem? Again:
the 192/24 tracks aren't even playing, no Touch track timebar movement,
no digital output at all (the Bryston DAC has this unusual feature that
it won't even power on if none of its 8 digital inputs are live). Last
official Touch firmware. Last LMS nightly: anybody else try it? Thanks
for any insight.

I find the first one to be quite important for LMS. I do it whenever I

The second one may be useful depending on how you do things. I always
rip to .wav, format to taste, copy .wavs to backup disk, then delete the
.wavs from the "music disk". Which means the FLAC files that are left
over to play on the music disk might be physically all over the place.

I think your DAC is OK for 192/24, so that shouldn't be it. Did you read
the posts just above yours? It may not seem related, but could be. You
must be playing FLAC, and it must be decoded on the Touch. This is *not*
what many people prefer; many decode on the server, and play WAVs for
example. So check that stuff; if you had been using TT3.0 before you may
have changed decoding to on the server, which won't work with 24/192, so
need to set it back to the Touch. Good luck with it, you're almost
there, it really does work!

Are you using the analog outputs? If so, maybe you got the R and L

thought I was hearing that a couple of days ago, everything sounded out

are 10s of MB each. I've never had an issue with the SBT displaying it.
But you must be a bit careful of the "advanced" settings re your

The SBT can make the crappiest art look not so bad. Using iPeng, crap
art that looks fine on the SBT looks like real crap, almost illegible.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Announce: Enhanced Digital Output app - USB Dac and 192k Digital Ouput

2012-04-11 Thread cfraser

Has anybody mentioned (or even found) that when set up for USB DAC that
the "now playing" display for internet radio can get totally out of sync
with what's playing? The audio is correct though.

I realise IR is not what this hi-res app is meant for, but I do use IR a
lot and thought my crappy (USB-wise) DAC sounded pretty good with it,
considering. Possibly people with good USB DACs might notice the same
anomaly, it's not always like that, just sometimes it goes there.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 7.7.2 digital clock screensaver when in standby

2012-04-11 Thread cfraser

It happened to me too. I usually have my screen disabled, but when I
turned the screen on the other day, no clock in standby (this is the
only time I have a "screensaver" enabled). It was there when I updated
to 7.7.2, but may not have survived the first subsequent power cycle.

I also noticed when I installed the "Enhanced digital output" app the
standby clock seemed to have returned. This is hardly a solution, just
sayin' and commisseratin'...

You cannot do that at this point. You must choose the USB DAC (or the
USB input) and leave it connected/selected. Though I read what triode
said, this point did not make an "impact" until I tried it...

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Announce: Enhanced Digital Output app - USB Dac and 192k Digital Ouput

2012-04-11 Thread cfraser

Seems to work with the Bryston BDA-1 DAC. Without the no-hub
workaround.
I am also happy that your app doesn't kill the ability of the SBT to
charge a PS3 controller lol [I think every device in my HT room has USB
port(s), yet only the PS3 and SBT will charge them].

I cannot see why anyone would actually *use* this DAC with USB input,
unless extremely desperate (which equates to the amount of effort
Bryston put into it, I guess their soothsayers were not up to par).

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Linear Power Supplies

2012-04-08 Thread cfraser

^ I'd say it's generally smoother, and a bit quieter. It has been so
long since I did my PS comparisons though, I can't remember the details
right now, but I did post them in one of the "Audiophile" forum linear
PS threads (maybe look for one I started, I'd guess last summer).
Background sonic quietness, the sense that the music is coming out of
"pure" blackness, is the one area that the SBT can't touch (pretty
cheap...) my best CD transport (via AES/EBU rather than S/PDIF) into the
same DAC.

I have to say that balanced power (BP) makes more diff here than the
linear PS did (pretty typical when applied to sources). And I tried a
bunch of them, nothing fancy though. And I won't plug anything with
switching PSs into my BP supply permanently, don't want to pollute it
lol. So a linear PS wasn't really an option for me, unless I stop being
a silly audiophile...

I have even run the SBT on a tightly regulated 6VDC, and it was fine.
Then I tried a "6VDC" wall-wart, one rated for 600mA so its voltage at
400mA continuous draw wouldn't be too high (ones rated for higher
current may put out 8-10V at low loads). This was fine too. Both of
these were noticeably better than the stock switcher, and not much
different than the "fancy" more proper PS I use. I am not recommending
either of these BTW, I only did it because they are common items that I
already had (6VDC is much more common for "adapters" than 5VDC) and I
wanted to see the effect before I built something "better" or at least
more permanent (and with a power switch).

Also bear in mind I am doing my "serious" listening through a system
that has no op-amps in the audio circuits, and after the SBT is truly
balanced (not balanced added on to single-ended). It is a VERY quiet
system, BP sure helps that. I hear every little tiny thing, even when I
don't want to... When I feed the SBT into my Denon AVR, like I'm
listening to now, most of the HW/SW changes I've made/tried with the SBT
have little to no sonic effect as far as I can tell. The preamp output
cicuitry (cheap op-amps) of the AVR (and it's no bottom-liner either) is
just too hazy and obscuring to be satisfying for me, but OK for
background listening. Just saying that YMMV depending what the SBT
feeds, so start slow/cheap (like I did with the adapters) before you go
hog wild and then find out it makes little diff for all the effort.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Linear Power Supplies

2012-04-07 Thread cfraser

What's John's opinion of multiple regulators in series?

For my convenience I built my linear PS with stuff I had. Hammond 4.8A
dual-bobbin xfmr (I really like them!), Schottky diodes, LT1086 variable
reg, Panny FCs. No choke (see [ ] below), but resonance control on the
xfmr. That is the main PS, which is set to put out 7VDC. Second stage is
a local regulator stuffed into a very tiny box which sits about 3" from
the SBT, same regulating parts as the main PS. Allows me to put the
larger main PS pretty much anywhere convenient. [It's not totally
relevant to this particular discussion, but the PS is fed from balanced
power which requires a certain physical placement which is nowhere near
where my SBT is.] My SBT only draws about 0.4A (2W) pretty much
continuously, so nothing gets very warm.

That said, the switcher included with the SBT is quite decent IMO for
the wall-wart switcher genre, much much better than many others I have.

Some have multiple pics for whatever reason, usually for some good
additional info where another jpg was the best/quickest way. Thanks.
