Duh! Amazon is the "gold standard" on Internet selling/marketing. I
suspect the REAL reason Logitech wants to be the sole online source is
very simple... $$$! I'm sure the profit on Logitech direct selling is
a helluva lot higher than via 3rd-party sites, but I suspect that
Logitech will (eventually) realize that Amazon can move a far greater
number of units, not to mention the added marketing clout.

Agree with these comments.

Walking away from all the potential buyers and serendipity traffic at
Amazon and other large retailers is a head scratcher. Maybe the sales
benefit of that distribution route was less than one might expect it to
be.

Yes, it does defy logic since Amazon is the polar opposite as far as
e-commerce sites go - they've pretty much written the book on how it
should be done.

I also like Crutchfield's and J&R's e-commerce sites.

Hopefully they will come to their senses after the trial is complete
and put stuff back up on Amazon and other etailer sites.

It still defies all logic, but I realize you're not at liberty to fully
explain the move. It's a shame that _any_ product would have to rely on
logitech.com as its sole means of distribution in the US. It has to be
one of the worst e-commerce sites for a large seller that I've ever
seen. Even as only a product information site it's embarrassing.

In other words, "marketing thought it was a good idea, but no one can
explain why they think that..."

That said, there are two sides of every coin, and though it seems odd
to me it isn't totally insane -- cutting out the middle layer can keep
prices down and/or profits up (no more 40% discount to retailers) and
it isn't that hard to buy from Logitech directly. Amazon is just so
convenient.

But the Logitech website still sucks.

That scroll box thing needs to be sized better -- overflowing the
container looks sloppy.

Many companies today are trying to find the best way to market and sell
products on the internet today. The old ways of advertising don't work
very well anymore. Logitech wants to find the best ways too. The guys
who run Logitech.com are using Squeezebox Touch as part of this
effort.

Hi Mickey,
Can you comment anything about the reason for this? It certainly lends
itself to a lot of FUD speculation.

The Squeezebox Touch is exclusively available in the United States
through Logitech.com. In Europe, it will continue to be available from
the current Squeezebox retailers.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Amazon drops SB Touch -- why?

2010-08-22 Thread Goodsounds

There was some speculation and discussion about this in an earlier
thread. One person wondered if maybe a model transition was in the
works.

Most (all?) retailers don't much care what they carry, so long as
customers are buying. I wonder if Logitech dropped Amazon for Squeeze
products rather than the other way around? Or, if maybe they're trying
to cut back on market support costs and/or want to raise revenue by
collecting retail prices themselves rather than just getting wholesale
prices from resellers. Or, or, or?

It's a mystery. Many of the possibilities are not positive.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Amazon drops SB Touch -- why?

2010-08-22 Thread johnny baby

Howdy all,

I was just curious if anybody out there knows why Amazon.com has
essentially dropped the SB Touch. On their site, they do show links to
other sellers, but they're no longer directly selling the Touch
themselves. A week or two ago there was a notice on the site,
basically saying, "We don't know when or if this item will be in stock
again." Does anybody know the story on this?

thanks,

johnny baby
