I understand the general logic, but that still isn't an official
announcement from Logitech. It is reading a comment about something else
by a company person in a forum that probably isn't followed by a very
large percentage of the customers and then imputing a conclusion from
it.

I understand Logitech's general philosophy concerning new products, but
the Touch has had some twists and turns in the process that don't
normally get public exposure.

Once events get to a certain point, continuing to follow the
bureaucratic script is rather like an army continuing to follow battle
plans that have been uncovered by the enemy and aren't working well. One
normally moves to Plan B at that point.

Of course, it is Logitech's company to run as they wish, but I'd have
to agree with some of the other posts I've read that Logitech isn't
doing a very good job with this, especially as relates to their
pre-order customers who have been left hanging. Whatever good buzz they
got from that is long since gone and they seem content to let it grow
more negative by the day.

I say that as someone who did not pre-order and have no plans to buy
one in the near future. But hunkering down and sticking to the script
doesn't strike me as the better PR strategy for them any more.

Just my 2 cents.

I've seen those reports about the change to a February 2010 target date,
but they seem to originate from outside of Logitech.

It'd be nice to have some official word if the December target is no
longer possible.

Given the tenor of the messages that are being posted, it sounds like a
bit of damage control is in order. I'd hate to see the pre-release buzz
turn any more negative than what it has been the past few weeks.

You can speculate all you want.

The distinction is unannounced vs. announced. You don't usually go

pre-announce, it seems to me they should have mitigated the holiday
season. They did not, so that's more than one mistake in my mind.

Lots of companies pre-announce in order to stall other company's sales.
It's not clear that Logitech did that here - I bet they only stalled
their own sales. Just seems like a couple boneheaded moves in a row to
me. I also wouldn't speculate that they won't do it again - I'm not
convinced of that based on their actions here...not that any of this
matters.

I'm just glad I am not one of the customers feeling burned by thinking
it would be available by the holidays.

Its existence was leaked because some stupid retailer sold one when

changed.

You are missing the point. A distributor/retailer screwed up and sold
 a
Touch before it was announced, before Logitech had trained its support
staff, and way before the software was ready.

The its coming was not an announcement, it was just an admission of

Not many since Osborne killed itself by announced and freezing its own

I didn't miss any point. It really doesn't matter what the catalyst
was...I was pointing out ramifications of their actions since.

Believe what you want, but companies still pre-announce all the time to
stall sales of competitors. Your example is simply to the point that
you need to manage product transitions properly. If you don't have a
revenue stream you are trying to protect, you can announce anything you
want whenever you want. I know this is obvious, but you state the
Osborne case as if it was a blanket example for product announcement
strategy. While I don't (and never did) believe they were trying to
stall a competitor, I just stated it to point out that I do understand
there are other reasons for these actions that might not be obvious to
the average person.

Since it was admitted, they are working on the software. Its not done

You really should lighten it up a few notches... I'm not missing the
point that has been made many times that it was not their initial plan
to announce it - in other words, I'm not missing anything either of you
have said. Very clearly, I have never said, don't listen to Pat or Phil

I don't think the forums are a substitute for true PR - if you search
the web, the general consensus is still December which is misleading as
we now know.

Who is this general consensus? If you searched the web six months ago
the general consensus was shipping July 2009. That consensus was
composed entirely of retailers who screwed up and listed the product
prematurely. Logitech's press release in September said -expected- in
December [emphasis added] and they have not made any public
announcement to the contrary. They might still make it, so how do we
now know that December is misleading?

Hi

It would be nice if the Touch could be released with basic
functionality, followed by a series of schedule feature rich firmware
updates.

I think this may keep a majority of users happy in the short term, and
would certainly take the pressure off the developers.

Its just an idea...maybe it could be offered to customers who have
pre-ordered, and are aware of the current situation.

Regards

Richard :)

I disagree, if you released it with promised features missing every
review of it would list missing features as a downside of the product
and the pressure to deliver on a short schedule may be even greater than
before.

That said, hurry up you guys I want a touch!

Ikabob, you've been around the forums long enough by now to know you
can't assume people will be polite about software failings. ;o) More to
