Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Compatible 32Gb USB Memory Stick Req'd

2012-04-27 Thread urardo

As before, all I can say is that the Echo ZE 32GB still works for me...
I got it at a cheap price two years ago, and now there are plenty of
cheaper sticks that you could always find another use for if they didn't
work with the Touch. The appeal of the ZE (not SE, ME, or ZX...) was in
its small size, although it does have an annoying blue blink.

A note: First thing I did was get rid of all the auto-run and
manufacturer-installed software. It's so long ago and has needed so
little maintenance that I can't remember what else I did before plugging
it in to the Touch.

Urardo
thanks very much for taking the trouble to reply. I've
had another look at the feedback on Amazon, the poor feedback actually
refers to another variety of the Echo (the ZX) not the ZE which you
have. As you say it might be worth a punt on a cheaper stick to start
with then if that doesn't work to go with the ZE as it definitely does
work but it's good to know that your solution has worked for so long.

I've ripped my CD collection to FLAC and have been running two
Squeezebox Touches from my NAS with no problems and I've become a big
fan of the system. However I'm going to work abroad for 6 months and
want take my music collection with me so I plan to take a usb stick and
one of my SBTs. I will need two 32gb sticks altogether. Having done some
searches on the internet there seem to be a number of problems with
using usb sticks with the Touch, which is a pity as I think this would
be a brilliant solution for me. I tried using an old 1gb Cruzer
Enterprise which I've had lying about to see what would happen but this
did not work. I've also seen this list
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Squeezebox_Touch_-_USB_Compatibility
although it seems a little out of date.

I understand that it may simply be down to trial and error but I would
really be interested in anyone's personal experiences of a 32gb USB
stick with the SBT before I order one. By the way I've noticed that the
(general) reviews of the Lexar Echo on Amazon are not good.

Any advice would be appreciated.

thanks

Also avoid sticks with special security features such as password
protection, hidden areas etc. These are all designed to work with
windows, the Touch does not run Windows so it will not work properly
with such sticks.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Compatible 32Gb USB Memory Stick Req'd

2010-12-08 Thread strocky

For use with newly purchased Touch

Is there any particular brand that works the best with the touch?

The Wiki is ambiguous to say the least

All I can say is that I once tested a generic 8GB thumb drive and it
didn't work well at all. I guess you have stick with a name brand and
try it out first.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Compatible 32Gb USB Memory Stick Req'd

2010-12-08 Thread iPhone

Stick with the major name brands and/or ones certified to the actual USB
Standards Specification. Yes these are the more expensive ones but one
most always gets what one pays for and will probably have less
problems/issues in the long run with name brand USB Sticks.

I have had good luck with SanDisk Cruzer, Kingston Data Traveler, and
the MicroCenter store brand Sticks.

As a side note, be very careful about buying USB Sticks off of EBAY.
Many are off brands labeled as major brands and other are even
completely counterfeit. One of my better half's employees bought a
128GB Kingston stick off of EBAY. It said it was a 128GB stick when you
plugged it into a laptop but there was only 4GBs of actual memory. I
opened it up after EBAY voided the sale and said he didn't have to
return it. It had a cheap 4GB chip made in China inside it. The outside
was a very good copy of an actual Data Traveler.
