MacMini + external USB/Firewire HD is plenty. Check my sig below. :)

I also add Replay Gain tags at the same time. These tags will not alter
your audio content in any way and can be enabled/disabled for each
player you may have. I don't use it for my main listening area, but
enable it on two other players where I don't want the volume changing
for different tracks.

You include Replay Gain in dbpoweramp setup.

Another nice feature for dbpoweramp is the Multi-encode functionality.
It allows you to rip discs in multiple formats if desired all in one
process. I rip my CDs to FLAC for the Squeezeserver and also rip to
MP3 for iPod/portable use.

Yes, that's the best approach if you have the room internally for the
hard drive. Using an external USB drive for Squeezebox Server does
work without any problems, but an internal drive is still faster for
doing things like copying files to and from the drive. Squeezebox
Server's scanning of the music library on the drive may also be faster
if it's connected viat SATA instead of USB.

I probably won't run a HD connected directly to the Touch, I'm talking
strickly about USB vs SATA in my main computer streaming wireless to
the Touch. I think I'll put a SATA in the case, then use a USB for
backup only.

When I said $3k-$5K for a music server, I'm talking building from
scratch and including a high quality DAC. It adds up fast... Mac Mini,
more and better HD's, Ayre QB-9, Software...etc...etc I was looking at
about $3500. +

Search this message board for the USB hard drive issue. There are
problems with many drives, which turn off automatically after a period
of time. There are others that seem to work well. I don't have much
experience with these yet, but my WD My Passport has worked well for
the past few weeks that I've been tinkering with it.

This board is very helpful for learning how to use a USB HDD with the
Touch's "tiny squeezebox server" (called "tinysb" on this board). Do a
search on "tinysb" and you'll learn a lot of the details, especially
about how best to associate album art with your files. The bottom line
on that one is not to embed the art into the files; instead use the
"folder.jpg" file within each album's folder.

Have fun!

dbPoweramp also has a batch ripping application that comes in handy when
you're ripping many CDs. Multiple CD-ROM drives and a dual-core
processor can make the job go that much faster, too.

Touch's USB has limitations over the full SBS server on a computer. USB
usage can also be hit & miss on reliability. Best to use a self powered
USB drive for sure.

Why $3-$5k for a server? Heck, a $400 new laptop + external HDD would
be way overkill on processing power to run SBS.
Most run the full SBS server off of an existing computer or just put
together a used computer or even a NAS drive to run SBS.
Also search VortexBox in these forums for a simple, dedicated,
complete, and very inexpensive SBS server solution for a few hundred
bucks.

I have 6.5 Terabytes in 7 different external drives hooked up to my
machine, plus the backups. No problems, as long as your computer can
support USB 2.0 you are fine.

John,

dbPoweramp cd ripper is an excellent choice. I've used that a lot, and
it's worth the money (pretty inexpensive as well for what it does). I
usually rip to FLAC format which is kind of like mp3 but it doesn't
lose quality of the original cd. The Touch like many high end audio
components support FLAC flawlessly, and FLAC is mostly known as the
digital archive standard amongst most audiophiles and music lovers. So
expect each CD rip to be about 500 or 600mb. So you'll need some space.
A few hundred gigabytes of storage will do (500 gig, 1TB etc...).
External drives are good for that. A suggestion I have is when you are
done ripping everything get another drive and backup all of your files
that are created from the ripping. You don't want to rip 800 cds all
over again. A spare external drive is probably the best bet. Then
take it out every few months and add new albums when you get them
ripped and added to your collection. I'm paranoid and have my 3000+ cd
collection backed up 4 times (heh).

Playlist creation is easy on the touch, just take some time getting
used to it how it sounds, works etc... it'll be really fun.

Other than your main computer you'll need a router of some sort and an
ethernet cable for the touch (or if you have wireless in your place the
touch connects to the wireless network if you want it to instead of hard
wired). I use hard wire to my router and have my computer on in another
room. I prefer the hard wire to the router because sometimes the
wireless network in my house can't handle all the traffic in the air,
and the signal quality sucks unless it's pretty close. Also for high
bitrate lossless playback a hard wire makes sure you have a stable
connection.

The Touch is awesome, have fun with it.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Getting started help needed...

2010-12-10 Thread Atver

Hi All, I just ordered a Touch, I want to use it to play my CD
collection (800+) that I plan on ripping to my computer. Here's my
questions...
- What do I need to start ripping the CD's to my computer?
- Which software should I use for the highest fidelity, most accurate
playback? I looked at dbpoweramp, but couldn't tell which package I
should use.
- Which software will give me the ability to put together playlists?
- Other than my main computer, is there any other hardware I will
need?
- Any other suggestions?

I can figure it all out once I know what i need. Thanks in Advance!

John
