Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Network Attached Drive?

2010-04-18 Thread andreasa

I also hoped that I could use my NAS as storage :(

But the other way around - the Touch acting as NAS - would be ok as wll
:)

But how does it work? How do I connect to the Touch and upload my music
files? I have dowloaded the Squeezebox server to my computer but I do
not know what to do next...

PS. I am completly new to Squeezebox.

Thanks,

Andreas

Touch works with samba like any NAS so if you activate it's sharing you
can find it via the explorer like any other network share.

Don really know :) SMB = samba =cifs is a network protocol for sharing
disks over networks, it not important windows knows what it is and the
Touch do too.
Samba translates between different OS's so you can use the NAS as any
other drive.

So you can browse your network neighborhood and find it.

You don't have to install anything

Most if not all NAS disk run linux in the background, but with the help
of smb it can appear as drive on the PC .
Most NAS boxes have a nice web-UI Touch don't so it is not filled with
backup programs and whatnot's like a regular NAS .

Hmm somebody who runs windows should have insight

heres the wiki btw

Just to clarify, you don't need Squeezebox Server on your computer if
you have a drive directly connected to the Touch. It's an alterative,
not a precondition.

It's Journaled for a Mac. I was under the impression that it could be
connected to my router via USB as a network drive and be able to work.
Based on the size of my files etc., I am probably going to have to move
a lot of things around and reformat.

In the network menu, there is a setting where I can enter an IP
address. Is this what you are referring to? I tried to enter my

No I have not tried.

But settings advanced USB SD Storage Sharing

would be a good place to start.

If you have a disk conected it should the appear on your network.

I'm not on win so I can not give specifics

No sharing wont work until you have an USB drive SD card, that's the
whole piont ?
There's no Hard drive on-board the Touch it has no internal space for
music, that's what the USB drive is for.

I understand that. But I was lead to believe (or I misunderstood) a
few months ago that the Touch would be able to use a Network-attached
HD in lieu of using a computer. I am now moving some files around so I
can reformat this HD and get it set up that way.

Ok, but I think thwers a good reason for that.

You realize that a network disk is much slower than an USB drive.
Then home user use NAS's boxes that are even slower than that, they
barely reach 10mB. Yes the NAS can have 100/1000 Network adapter, but
the speed reached when handling files is limited by CPU so these tiny
NAS boxes are not close to that spec at all, but gigabit ethernet looks
cool in the spec sheet.

That leads to this:
Scanning against a network drive is very slow even for a fast server.

But Touch is not exactly Quad Core 4mHz machine ;) so it's a slow
server.

Slow+Slow+Slow is what ? really slooow.

Logitech can not sell that kind of user experience, it would be
horrible.

A significant amount of customers would not understand ? it would be
that stupid logitech box's fault.

I am using ALAC, so based on the technical explanation above, it
*could* be slow. But I am hardwiring everything as my router, Network
HD and Touch are in close proximity to each other. I don't think I'd
have major problems. As it was, in some preliminary testing, I was
unknowingly running SBS on my Macbook Pro, pulling tracks off my
network HD and I guess back to the router, then to the Touch. I had no
issues. I can't imagine it choking that bad, if at all, if someone were
to use MP3s instead by cutting out the computer entirely. Those files
are significantly smaller.

determine the problem.

Anyone with more experience able to add an NFS mount?

I was under the impression that the Touch was able to access a
network-attached hard drive without a computer as the unit was running
SBS. Or at least I believe that was the discussion a few months ago on
here. Anyone else able to set this up? I had it running for a while,
but then realized it was running through my computer as I rebooted and
the Touch stopped playing.
