It's not my music that I am worried about people accessing, but there
are several other important work related things on my home network that
I would be concerned about. The only incoming 'holes' on my network are
VPN and SSH. If I am constantly on the move, or my remote IP changes,
the "block incoming connections/allowed IP addresses" setting is not of
much use (and I think it is relatively easy to foil it and expoit the
weakness to compromise the entire system). And I don't want to have to
VNC/RDP or even port forward the web settings every time my remote IP
changes. It's too geeky. I just want to be able to take my touch
wherever I am (often outside the US), connect to the local network,
turn on the VPN, and then it's like I'm at home with my own music,
pandora, last.fm, etc. I do use the SSH tunneling features for ports
3483 and 9000 with softsqueeze, and that works fine for remote
listening on the computer. However that will not work for a Touch. The
TCP ports you mention, work fine with Softsqueeze, SB2s and Booms, but
the Squeezeplay devices (Touch, Controller, Receiver, and SqueezePlay
desktop) all require additional UDP ports for proper functioning, and I
think VPN is the only solution for that.

Unless you're worried about someone listening to your music at the same
time you do, use the Settings/advanced/security "block incoming
connections/allowed IP addresses" function.

Remotely, use whatismyip.com to get your address and then RDP/VNC
through your modem's firewall to SBS and add that remote address.
You'll have to open-up 3483/9000. I do this regularly with both my boom
and SoftSqueeze.

Unless you have very high outbound bandwidth (or you're playing mp3's
rather than flac/m4a lossless,) you'll need to install lame and set the
remote player's bitrate limiting on.

Don't forget to add your "local" addresses (like 192.168.1.*) and
localhost (127.0.0.1)

real stereo makes the lights dim on the bass notes. (this means your amp
could also use it's own circuit.)

[SlimDevices: Touch] VPN directly from touch

2010-11-26 Thread Nikhil

Can the touch be hacked to VPN directly (OpenVPN or PPTP or IPsec or any
other protocol) into my home network when I'm on the move? I have Linux,
Windows and Mac machines running at home, so I guess I have some
flexibility in which VPN server to run.
