has a known cause and solution for this ever been found? I loved my SB
system and have tried a few alternatives and keep coming back to "i
don't want sonos" and "why is there not a good reasonable alternative?"
- i just want a simple reliable system with streaming support from one
of the big players like spotify

yes i guess the only way is to run LMS on a PC or some other external
device but its a shame the device didn't do what it was designed to do!
I had a hunch its down to it not been powerful enough as putting up the
VU meter is a sure way for it to get all laggy and throw in the towel.

it sometimes could go 10 days fine and other days keep stopping its
service over and over.

the multi room play, play of personal collection and streaming of the SB
system is very of the "now" its a real shame SB didn't continue or get
updated

I had the same problem, and understand your pain. I ran a 4GB usb flash
card with FLAC files for about a month without problems. Then I would
get the stopped music server faults. I stupidly tied to go to a large
USB hard drive. After a successful scan, tinyLMS would frequently crash
and have to restart. One day I could not restart Tiny LMS or disconnect
the drive. The LMS database on the HD had FAT errors. I have not been
able to get it to scan again after reformatting the drive, recopying all
the files, etc.

Why is crashes when the Touch is not even playing music is a mystery. I
tied to look in the log file for something helpful, but to me it is
nothing but jargon.

I have given up and will look to either moving to something else (Olive
One) or perhaps this Raspberry Pi. However, despite how easy the
computer-file say it is, this audiofool is cautious that I might trade
one headache (Touch) for another with the Pi (Install Linux, Putty, LMS,
etc...)

I agree, any differences should be very subtle. The TOUCH reportedly
has better digital out (coax) than the SB3 based on folks that know how
to measure these things. But again, any actual audible difference is
likely to be subtle at best.

There is a some type of problem interacting with the HD. After giving

Yes. No problem running LMS from my Windows XP machine; am using it
now while listening to internet radio while working on the computer. I
did verify the the Touch works connected to LMS on the PC. The Touch
is running tinyLMS from a 8GB memory stick. The Touch is for the man
cave with the HiFi system.

Since the Touch isn't working as a music server (right terminology?) I
am thinking about selling it while it has high value on the market.
Perhaps I will use the money to nuy a Olive one. Perhaps I will just go
back to my old SB3. I have read the Touch has a better DAC, but I use
the DAC from my Rotel pre-amp, so I should not notice much of a
difference going back to the SB3. Does the Touch have a better digital
out (coax) than the SB3?

I have given up. About a month ago I was able to get a successful scan
of music on my Toshiba hard drive. It was working with occasional
crashes, but it would work. However, one day is really crashed hard and
I could not get it to release the USB HD. The LMS database had
corrupted files, so I deleted it and have been unable to get a
successful scan again. In addition what I mentioned earlier (page 1),
have reserved an IP address and I do not do anything with the Touch
while it is trying to scan. In a desperate attempt to get it to work
again I reformatted the HD (FAT32), recopied all the music, and did a
factory reset on the Touch. I was still unsuccessful getting it to scan
the music. It does work on a 8 GB flash drive. Maybe is the USB
powered issue? I don't know.

I have observed it does not appear to be an artwork problem. The
problem is scanning files, which is between discovering files and
caching artwork. Perhaps it is some of my tags, but I deleted the
non-essential tags from the files.

I suspect there may be a hardware/software problem with the USB
connection as sometimes it does not want to let go of the hard drive.
For example, it say you can disconnect the drive, but the drive keeps
spinning. When I go to USB information it shows the name of my hard
drive. However, it will not start LMS with the message of no USB drive
attached.

I am thinking about getting an Olive One or if the community funded
replacement supports a hard drive I might look at that.

Thanks for the suggestions.

2013-02-22 Thread Waldo Pepper

I used to have this problem on an almost daily basis when using the
internal LMS. I'd come home from an evening out and wanted to relax
listening to music and see the dreaded message, wait for a rescan to the
point I just switched it off and went to bed.

Eventually I took advice from this forum and bought a simple cheap small
footprint PC and installed the PC server s/w from Logitech. It's low
enough power not to cost too much to run 24/7 and I have never had a
problem since.
Nor have I ever had to mess around with the clock since as it also used
to slip using the LMS, and the search speed is far superior.

I know you shouldn't have to do this but I was like you in terms of
frustration.

Yes as Gary Said it can be finicky if you remove the drive all the time
to add files its better to just do it over the network .

And if OP is still reading don't try to use while it's scanning that
would ensure a crash , let it finish .

And yes it's a very crippled version of the server it works better from
a pc or other suitable machine .

Sorry, no other ideas. use of TinyLMS in the TOUCH is "touchy" (no pun
intended). My recommendation is always to use LMS on something a bit
more powerful. Any old computer is more than enough (and doesn't have to
be in the same room, anywhere it can connect to the router is just fine
for running LMS and feediing players).

I am also having the same problem. TinyLMS will crash even when the
unit is not playing any music.

I read the suggestions on the provided link:

I have about 2000 flac files and about 1500 MP3, for a total of about
3500 tracks. Sometimes the indexing will crash, sometimes it will work
fine.
I am using a Toshiba Centreno 1TB portable drive, formatted to FAT32,
single partition, powered by the Touch.
I removed embedded artwork and made sure all artwork was 500x500 or
less.
I tried to remove extra tags that were not necessary to selecting music.
The tags do have replaygain information
I am running the most recent software version, and have installed it
twice and did factory resets.
I have two SB radios connected to the Touch.

The Toshiba drive is powered by the Touch, but other have reported this
drive as being compatible. Earlier, when testing with a USB stick, I
also had crashing problems, but in that case I did not clean-up my FLAC
files to remove artwork or extra tag information.

I have tied to view the log file, but when it crashes and I restart LMS,
it clears the log file.

What can I investigate to solve this problem? Any suggestions?

why do you want older firmware? I don't think your problem is a
firmware problem. But if you really want different firmware, you just
connect your TOUCH to a PC running an older version of LMS/SbS and the
firmware will be automatically downgraded to match. Again, I don't think
this is your problem. But old LMS/SbS available for download here:
