[Touch-packages] [Bug 1583061] [NEW] network-manager crashes once in a while

2016-05-18 Thread DasJott
Public bug reported:

Every now and then networks stops working and I have to do

sudo service network-manager restart

for it to work again. In rare cases only a reboot helps.
The attached apport information my not contain any helpful data, as I couldn't
have sent them while the error occured.

I made a cat on syslog with grep on error. This is what came along
around the time of crashing:

May 18 10:25:29 jwe kernel: [56474.611316] traps: nm-applet[8390] trap

name="run/NetworkManager/private-dhcp" pid=23543 comm="nm-dhcp-helper"
requested_mask="wr" denied_mask="wr" fsuid=0 ouid=0

I don't copy the whole file here, because it is full of docker logging,
saying, that no external connection was possible...

  From my phone ( Nexas 4 Mako OTA10 ) I can access the page and login OK. When
I download a file I get a HttpError: 401-Unathorized.

  More in depth:
  When I press the "GetFile" link Apache logs (in access.log):

  Chromium/35.0.1870.2 Mobile Safari/537.36"

  The difference is the first has my user name "barry" in it and the
  second doesn't.

  In comparison when doing the same thing from my desktop (14.04) and
  FireFox Apache logs

  192.168.0.2 - barry [14/May/2016:18:04:49 -0500] "GET

  (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:46.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/46.0"

  and displays the "What should FireFox do with this file" dialog and
  Apache logs nothing further.

  On my phone this behavior is the same whether I press "Download" or
  "Choose an application" from the Download dialog. Also if I long press
  the link and choose "Save link" the download fails also.

  When I tried to download a file from a commercial site I have to log
  into, the download succeeded. I suspect the difference is the
  commercial site probably uses something beside "AuthType Basic".

  I'm happy to provide any logs or to do more testing.

  Thanks

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1582899] Re: in-target: mkinitramfs: failed to determine device for /

2016-05-18 Thread TJ
** Description changed:

  Sysadmin reported in #ubuntu (later #ubuntu-kernel) the 16.04 ubuntu-
  server failed due to being unable to configure linux-
  image-4.4.0-21-generic.

  Lots of diagnostics and one SSH remote session later we seem to have
  narrowed it down to the installer.

- The cause of the error message appears to be that the symlink names in
- /dev/disk/by-uuid/ haven't been updated after the partitioning stage if
- there were pre-existing partitions and file-systems on the install
- device, *and* the sysadmin chose to format the existing partitions when
- selecting mountpoints.
+ At the installer's boot menu the F6 option "Expert mode" is chosen.
+
+ During initial ram file-system creation (after the kernel image is installed)
the /dev/ file-system is not mounted in /target/ and therefore
+ the initramfs-tools/hook-functions::dep_add_modules_mount() cannot match
+ the mount device of "/" (in this case /dev/sda3) with any node under /dev/
which only contains static entries.
+
+ Cause appears to be that live-installer.postinst has the crucial step
+ calling library.sh:setup_dev() commented out:
+
+ #waypoint 1 setup_dev
+
+ OS=linux
+ setup_dev() calls setup_dev_${OS}
+ setup_dev_linux() mounts procfs and devtmpfs into /target/
+
+
+
+
+ Originally the cause of the error message appeared to be that the
+ symlink names in /dev/disk/by-uuid/ haven't been updated after the
+ partitioning stage if there were pre-existing partitions and file-
+ systems on the install device, *and* the sysadmin chose to format the
+ existing partitions when selecting mountpoints.

  In this case a hardware RAID device presents:

  /dev/sda1 (/boot/)
  /dev/sda2 (swap)
  /dev/sda3 (/)

  From the shell I noticed:

Bug description:
  Sysadmin reported in #ubuntu (later #ubuntu-kernel) the 16.04 ubuntu-
  server failed due to being unable to configure linux-
  image-4.4.0-21-generic.

  Lots of diagnostics and one SSH remote session later we seem to have
  narrowed it down to the installer.

  At the installer's boot menu the F6 option "Expert mode" is chosen.

  During initial ram file-system creation (after the kernel image is installed)
the /dev/ file-system is not mounted in /target/ and therefore
  the initramfs-tools/hook-functions::dep_add_modules_mount() cannot match
  the mount device of "/" (in this case /dev/sda3) with any node under /dev/
which only contains static entries.

  Cause appears to be that live-installer.postinst has the crucial step
  calling library.sh:setup_dev() commented out:

  #waypoint 1 setup_dev

  OS=linux
  setup_dev() calls setup_dev_${OS}
  setup_dev_linux() mounts procfs and devtmpfs into /target/

  Originally the cause of the error message appeared to be that the
  symlink names in /dev/disk/by-uuid/ haven't been updated after the
  partitioning stage if there were pre-existing partitions and file-
  systems on the install device, *and* the sysadmin chose to format the
  existing partitions when selecting mountpoints.

  In this case a hardware RAID device presents:

  /dev/sda1 (/boot/)
  /dev/sda2 (swap)
  /dev/sda3 (/)

  From the shell I noticed:

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1583057] [NEW] Deny audio recording for all snap applications

2016-05-18 Thread Simon Fels
Public bug reported:

Until we have a proper trust-store implementation with snappy and on the
desktop/ubuntu core we want pulseaudio to simply deny any audio
recording request coming from an app shipped as part of a snap.

The implementation adds a module-snappy-policy module to pulseaudio
which adds a hook for audio recording requests and checks on connection
if the apparmor security label of the connecting peer starts with
"snap." which will identify it as a snap application.

Pulseaudio with the patch is available as part of the landing request at
https://requests.ci-train.ubuntu.com/#/ticket/1428

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1583055] [NEW] Empty settings.ini created for every scope even if it doesn't have settings

2016-05-18 Thread Pawel Stolowski
Public bug reported:

After recent changes to scope settings handling in shell plugin (the
switch from QSettings to glib-based settings) we now get empty
settings.ini and settings dir created for absolutely every scope in the

the scope for current LANG), but strings such as 'Highlight of the week' or
departments names (hit the search lens icon to reveal departments) which come

  upstart in user session manages environmental variables and most
  things have them, however Alt-f2 started processes lack them.

  [Impact]
  Some environment variables are missing from apps that are launcher from
Alt+f2 command lens, or in general with dbus-activation (an example might be
gnome-terminal, global menu not working).

  [Test case]
  Super Key -> "xterm" -> Enter -> env | grep SSH

  it should return something like:
  SSH_AUTH_SOCK=/run/user/$UID/keyring-/ssh

  Alt+F2 -> "xterm" -> Enter -> env | grep SSH

  The returned values should match the results got from the xterm
  instance that has been ran from unity dash application lens (the one
  opened with Super).

  The same should be checked for the variable XDG_MENU_PREFIX

  Before this fix happened we had this result:
    via Super Key -> the environment is correct
    via Alt-F2 -> it is not

  [Regression potential]

  Nothing known. Some variables could be overridden, but this is
  expected.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  When hotplugging a composite USB device that expose multiple
  interfaces (such as a Yubikey NEO or Yubikey 4), libccid does not
  correctly de-initialize the USB library when it skips over the non-
  CCID interface.

  This subsequently results in pcscd (or, presumably, anything that
  loads libccid, though I don't think anything else does) either using
  100% CPU or segfaulting when the device is unplugged.

  This seems worthy of an SRU as it is an easily reproducible bug with a
  simple, targeted fix.

  [Test Case]

  1. Make sure pcscd is running (sudo systemctl start pcscd; possibly sudo
systemctl restart pcscd if a potentially fixed package has just been installed)
  2. Plug and then unplug a composite USB device that includes a CCID interface
(such as a Yubikey NEO)
  3. Observe that pcscd has crashed with a segfault (sudo systemctl status
pcscd)

  [Regression Potential]

  The patch is quite narrow, and thus the potential for regression
  should be limited. The new code adds calls to close_libusb_if_needed,
  which is already written to be fairly conservative.

  The worst case here is likely an unexpected call to libusb_exit, which
  could cause libusb to get into an inconsistent state. However, in
  practice the call seems quite safe, and the likelihood of regression
  low.

  Original bug description:

/usr/sbin/pcscd --foreground --auto-exit

  I get this about once a day since installing xenial. I can't quite
  connect it to any specific event on the system, it just seems to
  happen sporadically -- fan turns on, I run top, and there it is again.

  Never had this issue on same hardware incl. smartcard with trusty.

  I wonder if it might be this? https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1576726] Re: [SRU] network-manager 1.2.0

2016-05-18 Thread Martin Pitt
The n-m-openconnect SRU drops the versioned NM dependency:

 Depends: adduser,
- network-manager (>= 0.9.4.0-4),

This doesn't look right. The yakkety package now does not depend on NM
at all any more, and the version was probably on purpose. The changelog
says "Drop unnecessary dependency on network-manager (>= 0.9.4.0-4)"
which does not explain anything -- I can see that, but the changelog
should give a rationale.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  Xenial was released with upstream beta2 version of network-manager to keep in
time for the release schedule, and upstream stable release has been made so
it's time to update to it.

  [Testcase]
  After upgrading the package, user should still be able to connect to networks
like Ethernet, Wi-Fi and VPNs.

  [Regression Potential]
  Potential of causing regression is relatively small because there is not big
changes made during beta2 -> stable process.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1581140] Re: SRU: Fix PR ld/20060, ld --gc-sections fail with __tls_get_addr_opt.

2016-05-18 Thread Martin Pitt
Hello Matthias, or anyone else affected,

Accepted binutils into xenial-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/binutils/2.26-8ubuntu2.1 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag
from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the
bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help
us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification .  Thank you in
advance!

  There is no reason this dialog should ever appear for the U1 account,

[Touch-packages] [Bug 989819] Re: Make duplicate signature more specific for DBusException and OSError

2016-05-18 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package apport - 2.14.1-0ubuntu3.20

---
apport (2.14.1-0ubuntu3.20) trusty-proposed; urgency=medium

  * Disambiguate overly generic Python exceptions in duplicate signature
computation: dbus-glib's DBusException wraps a "real" server-side
exception, so add the class of that to disambiguate different crashes;
for OSError that is not a known subclass like FileNotFoundError, add the
errno. (LP: #989819)

  The "functions signature" is the same, the exceptions are different
  though, it should probably consider that as part of the signature

  SRU TEST CASE:
  --
   * Modify /usr/bin/pybuild to append these two lines right after "def
main(cfg):"

  raise OSError(99, 'some OS error')

   * Now running "pybuild" will provoke an OSError, and you should get a
  /var/crash/_usr_share_dh-python_pybuild.1000.crash

   * With current apport, the crash signature looks like this, i. e. it
  does not include the errno (99):

$ python3 -c 'import apport; r = apport.Report();
r.load(open("/var/crash/_usr_share_dh-python_pybuild.1000.crash", "rb"));
print(r.crash_signature())'
  /usr/share/dh-python/pybuild:OSError:/usr/share/dh-python/pybuild@449:main

   * With this apport update (you need to rm the .crash and re-generate
  it), it will look like this instead:

/usr/share/dh-python/pybuild:OSError(99):/usr/share/dh-
  python/pybuild@449:main

   i. e. the errno 99 will be used to disambiguate/duplicate the crash.

  This works similarly for DBusErrors, but this is much harder to test
  manually. The backported patch includes automatic test cases which

# Turn on SYN-flood protections. Starting with 2.6.26, there is no loss

Status in procps package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  This is intended to be a 'wishlist' wulnerability -- w.r.t. procps and
  Edgy.

  In my opinion,the /etc/sysctl.conf should have
  'proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_syncookies=1' in order to permit the linux
  SYNcookies syn-flood trivial DoS attack to be mitigated as-necessary,
  by default.

  Note that the disadvantages of connections initiated w/ SYNcookies
  enabled only apply when the system is under attack (SYN queue getting
  rather full), as the syncookies reply-with-only-one-SYN+ACK behaviour
  only 'kicks in' when the system has a SYN_RECVD backlog problem. (If
  SYNcookies were not permitted incoming TCP connections have a very low
  chance of succeeding at all while under SYN-flood attack).

  Without this setting enabled, any TCP services on the machine can be
  DoSed from a dial-up line sending a stream of SYN packets from weird
  source addresses to open TCP ports like Samba/VNC/http/whatever

  Does anybody have any legitimate reason tcp_syncookies should be disabled?

  Some people claimed that SYNcookies break some RFCs once but I have
  not seen any evidence to this effect, only notes from djb saying that
  this is not true.

  Comments wanted please ;-)
  Thankyou in advance,

  it), it will look like this instead:

/usr/share/dh-python/pybuild:OSError(99):/usr/share/dh-
  python/pybuild@449:main

   i. e. the errno 99 will be used to disambiguate/duplicate the crash.

  This works similarly for DBusErrors, but this is much harder to test
  manually. The backported patch includes automatic test cases which
  cover the DBusError cases, though.

  Shortly after loading the page, a ribbon appears at the top to suggest using
an app, dismissing it with its X icon doesn’t render the content.
  I’m attaching a screenshot of how this looks.
  It could possibly be a user agent problem.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1546641] Re: unity-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in up_exported_daemon_get_lid_is_closed()

2016-05-18 Thread Martin Pitt
I sent patches to the upstream upower bug that improve the behaviour
when connecting to upowerd on D-Bus fails. However, libupower already
behaved in the current way forever, so this is nothing new in Xenial.
Thus the patches will also only help so far: they should avoid the
segfault, but you'll still get invalid data presented in the UI as the
client/the library never reconnects to upowerd.

The root cause here is that upowerd takes very long to start as it gets
blocked reading some kernel attributes. This needs to be fixed in the
kernel to truly solve this bug.

  Steps:
  1. connect mouse & keyboard to M10
  2. launch xchat
  3. go full screen
  4. mouse move around across the entirety of the screen (landscape)

  expected: mouse can range over entire screen
  actual: gets stuck moving right

  note: i noticed it happening on xchat, but when changing focus to dash
  it was also continuing to happen

  So, i kinda suspect this may be related to rotation maybe.
  I do admit i did the full OOBE in portrait mode

  Problem is also persisting across reboot.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  Formatting a SD card using the disk utility fails with an error
  message

  "Error formatting disk - Error synchronizing after initial wipe: Timed
  out waiting for object (udisks-error-quark, 0)"

  The underlying problem is that the "wipefs" tool from util-linux does
  not work any more.

  You can work around this bug in gnome-disk-utility using these steps:

  * After selecting the SD card, instead of clicking the gear icon to format,
click the partition in the "Volumes" section.

  * Delete the partition ("minus" icon)

  * Create a new partition

  [Test Case]

  $ sudo modprobe scsi_debug dev_size_mb=200
  # this creates a new /dev/sdX, usually /dev/sdb; check dmesg!

  # now create a partition table
  $ cat
