  Attempting to perform an ltsp server install on powerpc fails because

  Either we seed the packages, or remove the ltsp-server option from
  powerpc images. I am enclined to do the latter, as the images are
  somewhat tight for space.

Fixed, for anyone using windows on a dual boot, you have to SHUTDOWN
from windows. and then power on and go into Ubuntu. If you RESTART from
windows sound will not work in Ubuntu.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1805183] Re: systemd-resolved constantly restarts on Bionic upgraded from Xenial

2018-12-20 Thread dat
been running for 1 hour, seems to be working as expected

a live server

** Patch added: "0001-avoid-restarting-resolved-on-dhclient.patch"

Title:
  systemd-resolved constantly restarts on Bionic upgraded from Xenial

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  Log noise due to needless restart of resolved on lease expiry, maybe loss of
cached state?

  [Test case]
  (1) Append make_resolv_conf to the end of the file, so it gets executed
  (2) Execute the file with bash -x and different settings and ensure there are
no restarts if the settings are the same, and that there are if settings
change; for example:

  sudo new_domain_name_servers=8.8.4.4 interface="wlp61s0" reason=REBIND bash
-x debian/extra/dhclient-enter-resolved-hook
  sudo new_domain_name_servers=8.8.4.4 interface="wlp61s0" reason=REBIND bash
-x debian/extra/dhclient-enter-resolved-hook
  => no restart
  sudo new_domain_name_servers=8.8.8.8 interface="wlp61s0" reason=REBIND bash
-x debian/extra/dhclient-enter-resolved-hook
  => should restart
  sudo new_domain_name_servers=8.8.8.8 interface="wlp61s0" reason=REBIND bash
-x debian/extra/dhclient-enter-resolved-hook
  => no restart
  sudo new_domain_name_servers=8.8.4.4 interface="wlp61s0" reason=REBIND bash
-x debian/extra/dhclient-enter-resolved-hook
  => should restart

  [Regression potential]
  The change only restarts resolved when the settings change. If there's a bug
in the logic, resolved might not be restarted when it should be. Also, since
there will be less restarts of resolved, it will run longer, so if there are
memory leaks they will become more apparent.

  [Original bug report]
  If a cloud server is upgraded from Xenial to Bionic, the dhclient system
remains in place and any DHCP lease refreshes cause a needless restart of the
system-resolved daemon

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1805027] Re: systemd-resolved can't resolve Comcast mail server addresses

2018-12-20 Thread Ubfan
Tried the developers/proposed checkoff, but the 239systemd.. package is still
not available. In any case, Ubuntu 18.04 has problems connecting with
smtp.comcast.net (through evolution, recommended port 587).
The error trying to send an email is:

An error occurred while sending, how do you want to proceed...
 "The reported error was "Could not connect to smtp.comcast.net: Network is
unreadable".

But of course it is, ping and dig both work (see below).
Note that unlike the pop3, imap, (and mail) .comcast.net names, smtp DNS lookup
results are small,
one CNAME and one A , so bug 1804487 probably does not apply.

$ ping smtp.comcast.net
PING smtp.g.comcast.net (96.114.157.81) 56(84) bytes of data.

time=39.3 ms
64 bytes from omta-po.sys.comcast.net (96.114.157.81): icmp_seq=2 ttl=56

  related to its POP3 mail servers (mail.comcast.net and
  pop3.comcast.net) that prevent resolved from being able to resolve
  those domains into IP addresses. When I try to ping either host
  (mail.comcast.net or pop2.comcast.net), I get this error:

  tom@deathstar:~$ ping mail.comcast.net
  ping: mail.comcast.net: Name or service not known
  tom@deathstar:~$

  When I manually lookup up the domain, I get these results:

  tom@deathstar:~$ nslookup mail.comcast.net
  Server:   127.0.0.53
  Address:  127.0.0.53#53

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1805183] Re: systemd-resolved constantly restarts on Bionic upgraded from Xenial

2018-12-20 Thread dat
@juliank
I *believe* this is impacting our AWS ubuntu EC2 machines and causing wild DNS
errors impacting our users, I tried to apply the patch in this thread but it
doesn't work, it complains like this

/etc/dhcp/dhclient-enter-hooks.d/resolved: Syntax error: "("
unexpected

about this line

if ! cmp --quiet $oldstate <(md5sum $statedir/isc-
dhcp-v4-$interface.conf $statedir/isc-dhcp-v6-$interface.conf 2>&1);
then

Also for me this line

+  md5sum $statedir/isc-dhcp-v4-$interface.conf $statedir
/isc-dhcp-v6-$interface.conf &> $oldstate

outputs to stdout

   $ sudo dhclient
   RTNETLINK answers: File exists
   d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e
/run/systemd/resolved.conf.d/isc-dhcp-v4-ens5.conf
   md5sum: /run/systemd/resolved.conf.d/isc-dhcp-v6-ens5.conf: No such file or
directory

and the resulting temp file is empty.

Dunno why your patch misbehaves like this but I really have no time to
investigate further.

I've attached a patch that seems to be working on our servers in case
others are experiencing the same issue and need a quick fix.

Adding few server details in case you need 'em:

Title:
  systemd-resolved constantly restarts on Bionic upgraded from Xenial

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  Log noise due to needless restart of resolved on lease expiry, maybe loss of
cached state?

  [Test case]
  (1) Append make_resolv_conf to the end of the file, so it gets executed
  (2) Execute the file with bash -x and different settings and ensure there are
no restarts if the settings are the same, and that there are if settings
change; for example:

  sudo new_domain_name_servers=8.8.4.4 interface="wlp61s0" reason=REBIND bash
-x debian/extra/dhclient-enter-resolved-hook
  sudo new_domain_name_servers=8.8.4.4 interface="wlp61s0" reason=REBIND bash
-x debian/extra/dhclient-enter-resolved-hook
  => no restart
  sudo new_domain_name_servers=8.8.8.8 interface="wlp61s0" reason=REBIND bash
-x debian/extra/dhclient-enter-resolved-hook
  => should restart
  sudo new_domain_name_servers=8.8.8.8 interface="wlp61s0" reason=REBIND bash
-x debian/extra/dhclient-enter-resolved-hook
  => no restart
  sudo new_domain_name_servers=8.8.4.4 interface="wlp61s0" reason=REBIND bash
-x debian/extra/dhclient-enter-resolved-hook
  => should restart

  If a cloud server is upgraded from Xenial to Bionic, the dhclient system
remains in place and any DHCP lease refreshes cause a needless restart of the
system-resolved daemon

has been generated. This key now needs to be enrolled in your system's
firmware. To ensure that this change is being made by you as an authorized
user, and not by an attacker, you must choose a password now and then confirm
the change after reboot using the same password, in both the "Enroll MOK" and
"Change Secure Boot state" menus that will be presented to you when this

Ubuntu will still be able to boot on your system but any hardware that
requires third-party drivers to work correctly may not be usable. --scrolltext

I always got this issue only on Linux, every distro I tried including
Manjaro Linux, Debian, ubuntu had this problem.

Basically the microphone input sounds always distorted and "robotic"
even on high pitch. In all the programs I tried.

Workarounds as listed on the ArchWiki --->
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio/Troubleshooting#Microphone_crackling_with_Realtek_ALC892
have not changed anything.

Interesting thing though is that on FreeBSD this does not happen.

Utilities version:  1.1.6

Obviously this also happens on other kernels.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1805857] Re: network-manager dep8 failure blocks dnsmasq proposed migration

2018-12-20 Thread Iain Lane
After looking for a while, I think that the error we were managing to
reproduce (LOWERLAYERDOWN) was probably a red herring, and we were
reproducing some other (valid) bug. The original cause of the testsuite
failure still exists.

Not entirely sure why but this only reproduces for me 'properly' when I
use the real autopkgtest cloud. It's quite reliable there, so I ran a
bisect and it resulted in this mail:

http://lists.thekelleys.org.uk/pipermail/dnsmasq-
discuss/2018q4/012709.html

I freely admit my relative ignorance here, so if anyone can help please
feel free to chip in.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1781652] Re: should be possible to specify static routes on a dhcp-configured interface

Adding ONLINK option to netplan is essential.

I have same problem.

systemd has GatewayOnlink option which can be used.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1771185] Re: Secondary monitor not connecting in 18.04 LTS

2018-12-20 Thread reinhard zufall
I have basically the same problem. I was using 18.04LTS on a HP ZBook15
laptop and also wanted to connect an external monitor by using the HDMI
interface. I have 2 graphics cards intel(i915) + NVidia(390drivers), and
whatever I chose in prime-select/Nvidia-settings, the external monitor
did not work. 'xrandr' always listed the HDMI port as disconnected,
which was not true of course. I also tried using different HDMI cables
due to stackoverflow suggestions, but this didn't solve the issue. Then,
I updated to 18.10, which I still use now, hoping there would be an
improvement, but nothing changed. The monitor is still not working,
"xrandr" still says that the monitor is disconnected.

Would really be great if this could be solved. Hoping for the best.
Thanks!

Title:
  Secondary monitor not connecting in 18.04 LTS

Status in libxrandr package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I have an Acer Aspire V Nitro VN7-592G-709V with Nvidia Geforce 960M
  (nvidia driver v390) and a Benq W1070 projector.

  I have upgraded from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04 and my projector connects
  for a split second and then gets disconnected. In Ubuntu 16.04
  projector was working fine as a mirror display and extended desktop.
  Here's what I already tried:

  - enable the nouveau driver instead of the nvidia driver -> no result
  - enable the on-board intel board with sudo prime-select intel -> no result
  - apt purge nvidia* & reinstall nvidia driver 390 (stable) or 396 (beta) ->
no result
  - disable nouveau driver, disable nvidia driver from the repository and
install nvidia driver from nvidia website (both 390 and 396) -> no result
  - installed CCSM (CompizConfig Settings Manager) and disabled display
auto-detection -> no result
  - played around with the refresh rate (some forums say that the two outputs
have to be in sync -> no result
  - deleted the whole Ubuntu 18.04 upgrade and installed a fresh 18.04 -> still
the same issue
  - tried to manually enable the output with xrandr --output HDMI-1-2 --mode
1920x1920 -> nothing
  - under settings -> devices -> displays I don't see a secondary display (just
the main one)

  I have the latest libxrandr2, 2:1.5.1-1 under Ubuntu 18.04 (updated to
  day)

  Here is the output of xrandr the very second when I connect the
  projector (then HDMI-1-2 goes disconnected and no modes are
  displayed):

Title:
  evince crashes in FcConfigParseAndLoad

Status in fontconfig package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  I have the following situation persistently on my system (Ubuntu
  18.04.1 on Dell Latitude E6500):

  Evince called with any pdf file crashes immediately with a
  segmentation fault. From the crash dump, I see that the crash happens
  in fontconfig's FcConfigParseAndLoad function, i.e. when the system
  fonts.conf is read. I can reproduce the crash with the following
  minimal example:

  #include

  const FcChar8* filename = "/home/mirkoh/fontconfig-test/fonts.conf";
  FcConfig* config;

  int main(){
 FcConfigParseAndLoad(config, filename, FcTrue);
  }

  The fonts.conf file used here is also absolutely minimal:

  (Get me right. It first happened with my system fonts.conf, which is
  not empty. In order to find out whether a specific entry lead to the
  crash, I deleted entry after entry, ultimately reaching the file
  above, and always FcConfigParseAndLoad crashes.

  I have no idea how to go on from here.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1768230] Re: Long time booting : Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to device scanning.

2018-12-20 Thread Raoul Scarazzini
Just as an additional confirmation, having the full LVM device path
inside /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume like:

RESUME=/dev/vg_system/lv_swap

and running:

sudo update-initramfs -u

fixed the issue (also) for me.

Title:
  Long time booting : Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to
  device scanning.

Status in initramfs-tools package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in ubiquity package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in initramfs-tools source package in Bionic:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  [SRU Justification]
  A regression in initramfs-tools causes it to autogenerate config in the
initramfs saying to resume from any available swap devices, but references the
swap device by UUID, which is not a canonical form for referring to LVM volumes
(because of snapshotting, they are not unique). Ubiquity also generates a file
in /etc at install time which references the swap partition in the same way.
Since the lvm2 initramfs hooks also only activate precisely those LVs that are
detected as needed at boot, this adds an inappropriate 30-second boot delay to
any system with swap on LVM, which includes any desktop system that was
configured with LVM (but not full-disk encryption) at install time.

  [Test case]
  1. Install using the "Use LVM" option in the desktop installer.
  4. Reboot.
  5. Verify that dmesg shows a 30-second delay before mounting the root
filesystem.
  6. Install initramfs-tools from bionic-proposed.
  7. Reboot.
  8. Verify that dmesg no longer shows a 30-second delay before mounting the
root filesystem.
  9. Install using the bionic daily image that contains the ubiquity from
bionic-proposed.
  10. Reboot.
  11. Verify that /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume is not present and that
there is no delay before mounting the root filesystem.

  [Regression potential]
  This makes changes to shell scripts, and shell is a perilous language. An
unnoticed bug could cause all initramfs generation, and thus all kernel
installation, to fail for some users. A regression could also cause a user to
lose hiberation support that they currently have.

  [Original description]
  After choosing "Erase disk and install ubuntu" + "Use LVM with the new Ubuntu
installation", the
  system is very slow to reboot.

  It shows the message : "WARNING:Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to
device scanning.",
  then waits 32 seconds, then continues as it should.

  I think this is a ubiquity bug, since the d-i based installer is not affected.

  Updated bionic to the current 1.10 stable version

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  * Impact

  The updates in the stable serie include several fixes for
  misbehaviour, segfaults and security issues, those are the sort of
  improvements that should be in the LTS

  The detail of the changes can be seen in the NEWS entry
  https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/blob/nm-1-10/NEWS

  * Test case

  There is no specific test case for the update, the changelog includes
  some specific bugs which have their own test case, otherwise it's
  important to get testing/feedback from users on desktop & server,
  using IPv4, IPv6, VPN, wifi, eth connections, etc.

  * Regression potential

  The update is non trivial, there are several changes are IPv6 and DNS
  (especially in the context of VPNs) handling so it would be good to
  give those extra testing

Title:
  [Satellite A215, Realtek ALC268, Mic, Internal] No sound at all. My
  built-in internal mic won't record sounds.

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  My built-in internal mic on my Toshiba Satellite-A215 will not pick up
  sounds. The external speakers work just fine, but once again the mic
  can't record any sounds. I have an Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS.

  Below is a link of my ALSA "info" that may be useful:

  http://www.alsa-
  project.org/db/?f=10a2337ec9b863d7414121dff10f30ad0cdf430d

  I've tried the ALSA DKMS update recommended to me by an
  ubuntuforums.org user from this link:

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS

  However after following the instructions from the above link, the mic
  still has not worked.

  The same Ubuntu forum user suggested I file a bug. He/she provided me
  with a link from "an old report from an A215 with the same ALC268
  codec":

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...r/+bug/1081353

  I provided this because it may be helpful in the debug process.

  The version of ALSA I have is shown below:
  Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version k3.19.0-61-generic.

  Any help would be appreciated, please let me know if you need any
  additional info.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1722455] Re: Creation of mail/contact/calendar accounts impossible

Title:
  Creation of mail/contact/calendar accounts impossible

Status in gnome-online-accounts package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  If one wants to use Gnome Calendar or Gnome Contacts one has to create
  accounts to access the server. Gnome control centre provides prepared
  account templates for common public providers.

  There is an IMAP template that is broken (does not allow to connect to
inhouse mail servers).
  Also adding Calendar or Contact connection is not possible.

  In Gnome Calendar adding new calendars is impossible (there is a
  workaround by temporarily installing California but that is very
  unstable).

  There needs to be a way to install DAV connectors to CALDav and
  CARDDav as is possible in Thunderbird.

  Possible workaround (which is not stable):

  Under ~/.config/evolution one can add a text file containing the
  configuration to the required service.

  As there is no refresh function in Calendar or Contacts, this is a
  fragile solution though (requires constant session creation aka
  logout/login)

Title:
  Software & Updates application does not permit changes on the "Other
  Software" tab

Status in software-properties package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:

  On the "Other Software" tab, I am unable to select "Canonical Partners".
  Similarly, the other checkboxes on the "Other Software" can not be clicked.
  Clicking on a checkbox has no effect, and a dialog requesting the admin
password is not presented.

  However, activating or deactivating checkboxes on other tabs causes an
  authorization dialog to be presented to the user.

  I experience this bug in an an Xorg session.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1722455] [NEW] Creation of mail/contact/calendar accounts impossible

2018-12-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

If one wants to use Gnome Calendar or Gnome Contacts one has to create
accounts to access the server. Gnome control centre provides prepared
account templates for common public providers.

There is an IMAP template that is broken (does not allow to connect to inhouse
mail servers).
Also adding Calendar or Contact connection is not possible.

In Gnome Calendar adding new calendars is impossible (there is a
workaround by temporarily installing California but that is very
unstable).

There needs to be a way to install DAV connectors to CALDav and CARDDav
as is possible in Thunderbird.

Possible workaround (which is not stable):

Under ~/.config/evolution one can add a text file containing the
configuration to the required service.

As there is no refresh function in Calendar or Contacts, this is a
fragile solution though (requires constant session creation aka
logout/login)

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 17.10
Package: gnome-control-center 1:3.26.1-0ubuntu1

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1769297] Re: resume from hibernation broken when resume image is autodetected

2018-12-20 Thread amk
Reached to this bug because of a similar issue we were able to resolve
using information here.

In 18.10, at least in our case, the RESUME variable is set with
partition device name, not UUID. Yet the identification failed, because
the device is not a link and readlink ${resume} returns nothing (or
invalid argument when invoked with -v).

Got things working by assigning $resume into $DEV directly. This could
be more universal approach:

DEV=$(readlink ${resume})
DEV="${DEV:-$resume}"
DEV=/sys/class/block/${DEV##*/}/dev

Title:
  resume from hibernation broken when resume image is autodetected

Status in initramfs-tools package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I found a reason of non-functioning resume from hibernation when
  resume partition/file is autodetected by intiramfs hook /usr/share
  /initramfs-tools/hooks/resume.

  Here is the scenario:
  1) hook /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/resume creates config
conf/conf.d/zz-resume-auto saved in initrd image, containing one variable:
RESUME=UUID=106238b0-707d-4422-866d-a7534da50702 in my case

  2) during boot init script sets 'resume' variable to 'RESUME' value
  from conf/conf.d/zz-resume-auto, then it executes local-premount
  scripts including local-premount/resume

  3) resuming script local-premount/resume
(/usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-premount/resume) tries to get resume
device major-minor numbers by these lines:
  DEV=$(readlink ${resume})
  DEV=/sys/class/block/${DEV##*/}/dev
  if [ -r "$DEV" ]; then
  read MAJMIN < "$DEV"
  fi

  4) next check fails and resume process silently aborts:
  if [ -z "$MAJMIN" ]; then
  exit 1
  fi

  Resuming script fails to get device major-minor because
  resume=UUID=106238b0-707d-4422-866d-a7534da50702 -- it's not resolved
  into device path in init script.

  Commonly mentioned workaround is to explicitly specify kernel
  parameter resume=UUID=106238b0-707d-4422-866d-a7534da50702 -- only in
  this case init script resolves it to device path.

  Mounting manually a network share (NFS) and masking it breaks the state of
other units (and their dependencies).
  Casper is masking a mounted NFS share, blocking the normal boot process as
described in the original description, but the issue comes from systemd.

  [Test Case]

  - NFS mount point at /media
  root@iscsi-bionic:/home/ubuntu# mount | grep media

  - Test mount point (/test) defined in /etc/fstab:
  root@iscsi-bionic:/home/ubuntu# cat /etc/fstab |grep test
  tmpfs /test tmpfs nosuid,nodev 0 0

  1. If media.mount is not masked, everything works fine:

  [Regression potential]

  Minimal. Originally, one failing mount point blocked the processing of
  the rest due to how the return codes were handled for every line in
  /proc/self/mountinfo. This patch removes this "dependency" and keeps
  the failure local to the affected mount point, allowing the rest to be
  processed normally.
