Title:
  bash returns wrong variable value/call more proccesses?

Status in bash package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Simple function gives different results when interpretator set in first
string of script
  CHECKPROC()
  {
  i=$(ps aux | grep -c $0)
  ps aux | grep -c $0
  echo variable is $i
  sleep 10
  }
  CHECKPROC

  Expected
  In any conditions it will return same values, then will increments when other
copies of script will be found in proccesses list.

  Happened.
  We set interpretator with #!/bin/bash or #!/bin/sh in first string of script
and runs multiple copies of script from one terminal with & after scriptname.
It's returns "1" and "variable is 1" always.
  Without interpretator setup, when string #!/bin/bash or #!/bin/sh deleted.
  Run multiple copies scriptname.sh&
  On every iteration it returns right first value and "variable is $value+1"

  $scriptname.sh&
  2
  variable is 3
  $scriptname.sh&
  3
  variable is 4
  ...and so on.

  Without counting in first case it returns only string with grep, in
  second case -- one more string with different PID and script name when
  called from i=$(...) or i=`...`

  Ubuntu 14.04 x32, bash 4.3.11(1)-release

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1958088] Re: Mopidy wil not connect to icecast2

2022-03-18 Thread mujaheddin
Ok solved the libenc issue on ubuntu 20.04 using GitHub -
raveberry/raveberry: A multi-user music server with a focus on
participation

Streaming doesn’t work (there is only silence)

This is a known issue on Ubuntu 20.04 and Debian Bullseye. To fix
it, downgrade libshout3:

 cd /tmp
 # for x86_64
 wget
http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/libs/libshout/libshout3_2.4.1-2build1_amd64.deb
 -O libshout.deb
 # for armhf (Raspberry Pi)
 wget
http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian/pool/main/libs/libshout/libshout3_2.4.1-2_armhf.deb
 -O libshout.deb
 sudo dpkg -i libshout.deb

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1965535] Re: Stop recommending snap

2022-03-18 Thread Avamander
It's also worth pointing out how snap does not offer feature parity. VA-
API and native-component extensions are broken to this day with Chromium
snap, for four years now. The latter meaning that entire countries can
not use chromium snap if they wish to use their national authentication
and signature system on the web. Broken for millions of potential users
and nobody cares.

Seeing how shipping fully-working software seems not doable with snaps,
recommending it as a default is an user-hostile decision at this point
in time.

  Stop recommending snap

Status in ubuntu-meta package in Ubuntu:
  Opinion

Bug description:
  Currently, ubuntu recommends installing snap by default, and some apps
  are slowly transitioning from DEB-based installation to Snap-based
  installation.

  APT is great, and facilitates having a clean, maintainable system.

  The snap project is not very well designed or engineered (just
  changing the location of where snap data is located is taking the
  project more than 5 years because it was hardcoded:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/snapd/+bug/1575053). Snaps are large and
  VERY slow. The design of snap, as well as the way that decisions are
  made, are very questionable, and are receiving increasing amounts of
  criticism.

  I'd like to request that Ubuntu stops recommending snap, stops
  transitioning towards snaps, and we come back to defaulting to
  DEB/APT-based installation for all apps.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1965535] Re: Stop recommending snap

2022-03-18 Thread Forest
+1

For the record, Snap being forced upon users for critical packages is
the primary reason why I recently dropped Ubuntu and stopped
recommending the distro to others, after using it for over 15 years.

Container-based packaging has its place. Snap has some interesting
features compared to FlatPak and AppImage. However, none of them are
suitable replacements for deb & apt, and this is really driven home when
they're used for core packages like the web browser. Snap in particular
has multiple fundamental design and implementation problems that make it
intolerable.

  Initially omshell returns data as expected, but when I exit and re-enter
  omshell connections fail.

  skew = 00:00:00:00
  max-response-delay = 00:00:00:3c
  cur-unacked-updates = 00:00:00:00

  Here is what I see when the connect fails. Well, just hangs really.

  # omshell
  > server localhost
  > port 7911
  > key omapi_key
  > connect

  And then I hit ctrl-c to break out and tried again:

  # omshell
  > server localhost
  > port 7911
  > key omapi_key
  > connect
  Segmentation fault (core dumped)

  Note, the peer to this server is still running Ubuntu 18.04 with
  isc-dhcp-server 4.3.5. Running the exact same commands on the peer
  works reliably. (They are using the same python script to drive
  omshell.) The DHCP server on the new system appears to be working
  just fine as reported by omshell on the peer and systemctl.

  I was curious if the problem could be with the mis-matched versions
  of isc-dhcp-server so I shutdown isc-dhcp-server on the 18.04 system
  and get the same results.

  I also tried using a python script with the pypureomapi module to
  try and determine if the problem was in omshell or the server. I
  got very similar results when I attempted to get information about
  the failover state of the server. Interestingly interrogating
  the server about host information seems to work just fine.

  This is a critical bug since I don't see how to fail over a DHCP
  that is running the isc-dhcp-server on 20.04 without being able
  to issue omapi commands.

  I am attaching apport output to this bug report.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1964442] Re: [jammy Regression] signing a changes file in gnome-terminal sends keys to the terminal

2022-03-18 Thread Jeremy Bicha
I experienced a similar issue today. I ran `snap install app` in my
terminal. It popped up a PolicyKit login window and my terminal started
filling with empty input lines.

Around the same time, I had this in my journal log repeatedly:

gnome-shell: Object 0x5614373df110 of type IBusText has been finalized
while it was still owned by gjs, this is due to invalid memory
management.

Therefore, I'm reassigning to gnome-shell and ibus. I don't think this
issue is specific to gnome-terminal. You might eventually see it with a
different terminal.

I am using the default Ubuntu session on Wayland.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1962332] Re: xenial systemd fails to start if cgroup2 is mounted

2022-03-18 Thread Steve Langasek
It's the SRU team's purview to make exceptions here. The rationale that
this only benefits images is and therefore needs to be in the main
archive is sound. So for the SRU team, I'm +1 on going ahead with this.
But someone still needs to prepare the SRU, which I think falls to
Foundations.

Title:
  xenial systemd fails to start if cgroup2 is mounted

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in systemd source package in Xenial:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  [impact]

  now that jammy has moved to using unified cgroup2, containers started
  on jammy must also use unified cgroup2 (since the cgroup subsystems
  can only be mounted as v1 or v2 throughout the entire system,
  including inside containers).

  However, the systemd in xenial does not include support for cgroup2,
  and doesn't recognize its magic (added in upstream commit
  099619957a0), so it fails to start completely.

  [workaround]
  On Jammy host edit default kernel command line to include

  systemd.unified_cgroup_hierarchy=false

  update your bootloader configuration; and reboot

  then hybrid cgroups will be on the host, and one can launch xenial
  container then.

  [test case]

  create a jammy system, that has unified cgroup2 mounted. Then:

  $ lxc launch ubuntu:xenial test-x
  ...
  $ lxc shell test-x

  (inside xenial container):
  $ mv /sbin/init /sbin/init.old
  $ cat > /sbin/init <+a q
  Failed to mount cgroup at /sys/fs/cgroup/systemd: Operation not permitted
  [!!] Failed to mount API filesystems, freezing.
  Freezing execution.

  [regression potential]

  any regression would likely break xenial containers from starting at
  all, or cause cgroup-related problems with systemd starting and/or
  managing services.

  [scope]

  this is needed only for xenial. However, as xenial is out of standard
  support, this would need to be an exception.

  this is fixed upstream with commit 099619957a0 (and possibly others -
  needs closer investigation and testing) which is first included in
  v230, so this is fixed already in b and later.

  this is not needed - by default - for trusty because upstart is used
  there; however, I think it's possible to change trusty over to use
  systemd instead of upstart. But since trusty is out of standard
  support, and it doesn't fail by default, it doesn't seem like it
  should be fixed.

  [other info]

  An alternative appears to be to change the host system back to using
  the 'hybrid' cgroup, however that obviously is awful and would remove
  the benefits of cgroup v2 from the host system, and force all
  containers on the host system to also use the 'hybrid' cgroup.

  Pressing calculator key generates infinitely many key-press key-
  release events

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  Full description is posted in this AskUbuntu question:

  I've got a new notebook HP Omen 15, manufactured in 2020. I has
  Calculator key, this key is actual normal media key.

  Pressing on it launches calculator only once, after the OS is booted.
  No reaction for other presses.

  If I run xev and press Calculator I see infinitely many messages about
  pressing and releasing XF86Calculator key:

  ...
  KeyRelease event, serial 42, synthetic NO, window 0x3e1,
  root 0x29e, subw 0x0, time 52918, (151,-96), root:(151,806),
  state 0x14, keycode 148 (keysym 0x1008ff1d, XF86Calculator), same_screen YES,

  ...

  Then I press Ctrl-C to stop this stream.
  This happens only once after the system is booted, next runs of xev don't
show any events after pressing this key.

  If I run showkey, it always shows scan codes and key codes for that
  key:

  $ sudo showkey -s
  kb mode was ?UNKNOWN?
  [ if you are trying this under X, it might not work
  since the X server is also reading /dev/console ]

  press any key (program terminates 10s after last keypress)...

  0xe0 0x21
  $ sudo showkey -k
  kb mode was ?UNKNOWN?
  [ if you are trying this under X, it might not work
  since the X server is also reading /dev/console ]

  press any key (program terminates 10s after last keypress)...
  keycode  28 release
  keycode 140 press
  keycode  29 press
  ^Ccaught signal 2, cleaning up...

  Debugging with evtest shows that this key doesn't generate any events,
  while some other keys do:

  sudo evtest

Title:
  OpenSSL servers can send a non-empty status_request in a
  CertificateRequest

Status in openssl package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in openssl source package in Bionic:
  New

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  openssl does not conform to RFC8446, Sec. 4.4.2.1., by sending a
  CertificateRequest message to the client with a non-empty
  status_request extension.

  This issue was fixed in openssl-1.1.1d and is included in Focal
  onward.

  Upstream issue is tracked at https://github.com/openssl/openssl/issues/9767
  Upstream patch review at https://github.com/openssl/openssl/pull/9780

  The issue leads to various client failures with TLS 1.3 as described
  in, e.g.

  https://github.com/golang/go/issues/35722
  https://github.com/golang/go/issues/34040

  [Test Plan]

  The issue can be reproduced by building with `enable-ssl-trace`
  and then running `s_server` like this:

  ```
  openssl s_server -key key.pem -cert cert.pem -status_file
test/recipes/ocsp-response.der -Verify 5
  ```

  And running `s_client` like this:

  ```
  openssl s_client -status -trace -cert cert.pem -key key.pem
  ```

  The output shows a `status_request` extension in the
  `CertificateRequest` as follows:

  Received Record
  Header:
    Version = TLS 1.2 (0x303)
    Content Type = ApplicationData (23)
    Length = 1591
    Inner Content Type = Handshake (22)
  CertificateRequest, Length=1570
    request_context (len=0):
    extensions, length = 1567
  extension_type=status_request(5), length=1521

0..1.0...UG
  ...more lines omitted...

  If the `status_request` extension is present in a
  `CertificateRequest` then it must be empty according to RFC8446,
  Sec. 4.4.2.1.

  [Where problems could occur]

  The patch disables the `status_request` extension inside a
  `CertificateRequest`. Applications expecting the incorrect,
  non-empty reply for the `status_request` extension will break
  with this patch.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1798400] Re: [upstream] Regression: cannot use impress remote over bluetooth with ubuntu bionic

2022-03-18 Thread Sergio Callegari
Bug still there. In most situations the remote cannot be used at all.
Not via bluetooth (because of this issue), neither via wifi (because you
typically do presentations at sites where you do not control the wifi
network and traffic to the relevant ports gets blocked). Suggested
upstream some possible solutions including stop advertising the
functionality. Consider closing as Wontfix because I think there is
really nothing that downstream can do about it.

  This used to work on the same hardware (headset and laptop) with
  ubuntu 16.04.

  Hence the issue seems to be in a regression in the ubuntu bluetooth
  stack.

  To replicate:

  1) Install Libreoffice on Ubuntu bionic (either from the ubuntu repo
  or with the deb packages from the document fundation)

  2) Assure that your computer has bluetooth

  3) Install impress remote on an android handset (either from the play
  store of via fdroid)

  4) Assure that "remote control" is enabled in impress
  Tools>Options>Impress>General

  5) Pair the bluetooth adapters in the laptop and in the computer

  6) Open a presentation on the laptop

  7) Open the remote on the handset, got to the bluetooth pane see the
  computer there, touch it

  8) See the impress remote erroring out

  Most likely you will also get a bluetooth error on dmesg

  RFCOMM server failed for LibreOffice Impress Remote: rfcomm_bind:
  Address already in use (98)

  Same issue was reported for fedora

Remember to check GRUB's config files to include the new kernel image.

Hi vpi,

I would recommend to start fresh. What I would do is:
 1. Get into the kernel config with "make menuconfig", load the .config file
from the "Load" button at the bottom.
 2. Exit the menu, this will save the and accommodate the config.
 3. Compile the kernel with "make" and whatever options you want.
 3. Compile the kernel modules (if you have chosen to build drivers as modules)
with "make modules_install".
 5. Install the kernel image in /boot with "make install".

Try this and let me know of the results. I'm really interested in fixing this
problem myself as well. I have a Legion 7 16ACHg6 (AMD) and speakers don't work
on Arch Linux.

I already have my laptop with sound on fedora 35 (comment 560), I was
talking about the kernel 5.17 that will be set in fedora 36. I don't
understand how is merged every patch in a new kernel release.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1958019]

2022-03-18 Thread alexzoller1
(In reply to henry.hormaza from comment #583)
> Hi, I'm trying the new fedora 36, right now it has the 5.17.0 RC8, what
> should I do to enable the configuration without building the kernel? or is
> just that the RC8 don't have the patch yet?

I using Fedora 35 right now, I have the Galaxy Book Pro 360, but it has
the ALC298 realtek chip. I tried this patch for the kernel within this
bug report but still didn't work for me. Also, the kernel 5.16.15 still
doesn't seem to have a fix or even 5.17.

However, this guide works: https://forum.manjaro.org/t/howto-set-up-the-
audio-card-in-samsung-galaxy-book/37090

All I needed to do was install alsa-tools then run the script with the
hda-verbs and after running the script (need to run it a few times) my
audio works from my speakers and headphone. Without this, just audio
works from headphone jack but not from speakers.

Additionally, after some time maybe 1 hr or so, or, if I exit a page
with audio running, I need to re run the script again to apply the hda-
verbs for my speakers to work.

Anyways, that worked for me and it might work for you. No need to mess

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1958019]

2022-03-18 Thread henry.hormaza
Hi, I'm trying the new fedora 36, right now it has the 5.17.0 RC8, what
should I do to enable the configuration without building the kernel? or
is just that the RC8 don't have the patch yet?

Hi Mark,

I should've been clearer in my last comment. I followed the instructions
stepwise, which means I ran "make -j 16" before running "make install".
And yet I was getting this error.

Hello @vpi

Before running "make install" you need to compile the kernel with
"make". "make install" will install the compiled kernel, so you need to
compile it first.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1959047] Re: systemd ignores RootDirectory option in .service units

Is there a chance to SRU a targeted patch for LXD in Bionic to fix the
issue instead?

Title:
  systemd ignores RootDirectory option in .service units

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  The version of systemd (249.5-2ubuntu4) currently packaged for the
  Ubuntu development version (22.04 Jammy Jellyfish) totally ignores the
  RootDirectory= option in systemd service files. With RootDirectory,
  systemd should start the service after calling chroot() on the
  supplied directory.

  To test/reproduce, create a test service file with the following
  contents:

  # /etc/systemd/system/lsb-release.service
  [Unit]
  Description=LSB Release Information

  [Service]
  Type=simple
  RootDirectory=/var/chroot/trusty
  ExecStartPre=/bin/pwd
  ExecStart=/usr/bin/lsb_release -a

  You should have a chroot environment in the specified RootDirectory, even
though you can still deduce if systemd attempted to chroot or not from the
resulting error message.

  In my example, I installed an end-of-life Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr in
  the chroot environment. On systems NOT affected by the problem, I get
  the following result when I start this test service. This is what I'd
  expect.

  Jan 25 20:40:40 dolly systemd[1]: Starting LSB Release Information...
  Jan 25 20:40:40 dolly pwd[361]: /
  Jan 25 20:40:40 dolly systemd[1]: Started LSB Release Information.

  Jan 25 20:40:40 dolly lsb_release[362]: Codename:trusty
  Jan 25 20:40:40 dolly systemd[1]: lsb-release.service: Succeeded.

  On the problematic system, however, I get the following result.

  Jan 25 21:21:08 savelog systemd[1]: Starting LSB Release Information...
  Jan 25 21:21:08 savelog systemd[1]: Started LSB Release Information.
  Jan 25 21:21:08 savelog pwd[81114]: /
  Jan 25 21:21:08 savelog lsb_release[81115]: No LSB modules are available.

  It totally run the service on the host's root filesystem, it didn't care even
the slightest that a RootDirectory is specified.

-XKBCOMMON +UTMP +SYSVINIT default-hierarchy=unified

  Note that the problem is produced under an LXC container; since systemd
detects virtualization, it might change how it behaves.

  It's either a bug or an intentional change I don't understand yet
  (i.e. the RootDirectory option has deprecated and is about to be
  replaced with something else, or there are additional conditions to be
  met before RootDirectory is considered), but I think in the latter
  case I should at least get a warning that there is a change in
  configuration. I imagine suddenly everyone's existing service units
  utilizing RootDirectory silently stop working without any information
  regarding why.

2022-03-18 Thread Luca Boccassi
This is caused by
https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/tree/debian/patches/debian/UBUNTU-
Revert-namespace-be-more-careful-when-handling-
namespacin.patch?h=ubuntu/jammy

From upstream's point of view, ignoring sandboxing options requested by
unit owners is quite dangerous. It can result in programs running
completely unconstrained.

2022-03-18 Thread Ivan
** Description changed:

  Currently, ubuntu recommends installing snap by default, and some apps
  are slowly transitioning from DEB-based installation to Snap-based
  installation.

  APT is great, and facilitates having a clean, maintainable system.

- The snap project is not very well designed or engineered (just changing the
location of where snap data is located is taking the project more than 5 years
because it was hardcoded: https://bugs.launchpad.net/snapd/+bug/1575053). Snaps
are large and VERY slow. The design of snap, as well as the way decisions are
made, are very questionable, and are receiving
- increasing amounts of criticism.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1965535] [NEW] Stop recommending snap

2022-03-18 Thread Ivan
Public bug reported:

Currently, ubuntu recommends installing snap by default, and some apps
are slowly transitioning from DEB-based installation to Snap-based
installation.

APT is great, and facilitates having a clean, maintainable system.

The snap project is not very well designed or engineered (just changing
the location of where snap data is located is taking the project more
than 5 years because it was hardcoded:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/snapd/+bug/1575053). The design of snap, and
many decisions made in the project that impact users, are very
questionable, and snaps are large and VERY slow.

I'd like to request that Ubuntu stops recommending snap, stops
transitioning towards snaps, and we come back to defaulting to DEB/APT-
based installation for all apps.

** Affects: ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1965526] [NEW] gdb 9.2 silently exits when debugging from within eclipse

2022-03-18 Thread Gaël Roualland
Public bug reported:

While I was trying to debug a program from eclipse on a 20.04 system, I
noticed gdb aborting and stopping the debugged program after a few
steps.

Turns out this is a gdb bug:
https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=28711 with a simple fix.

I have rebuilt the package locally with the patch, but filing this
because I think it could be helpful to others to integrate that patch in
the package.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1965518] [NEW] [USB-Audio - USB Audio, recording] Recording problem

2022-03-18 Thread Adrian Hareńczyk
Public bug reported:

Microphone when using built in mbo MSI Z690 Edge WiFi DDR4 audio Realtek
ALC4080 is not recording audio. What I did found out, that the bar which
indicates that something is recording is going up, when I play some
sound on ubuntu, so input "thinks" it is output I think.

If raport is somehow saying I was not using that mic at the moment, that
is because I was using other card which I need to buy, for mic to
temporarly work. I rechecked it before sending report, and yes, that
original from MBO audio input is still not working.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1965328] Re: transient scope could not be started error in bionic lxd container

2022-03-18 Thread Maciej Borzecki
Let me reiterate what I mentioned in the MM channel. The snap in
question apparently uses device access in which case we'll set up device
filtering. The host being impish, uses cgroup v2, which percolates to
the container. Since it's v2, device filtering is implemented by
attaching a BPF program on the cgorup, hence we need to have a separate
group otherwise we'd break your session. Snap will ask your systemd
--user to create a transient scope for the app, but looking at the logs
this fails with:

Mar 17 16:13:22 b2 systemd[2487]:
snap.snapcraft.snapcraft.237e42c2-4906-439b-a992-743647600bc6.scope: Failed to
add PIDs to scope's control
Mar 17 16:13:22 b2 systemd[2487]:
snap.snapcraft.snapcraft.237e42c2-4906-439b-a992-743647600bc6.scope: Failed
with result 'resources'.
Mar 17 16:13:22 b2 systemd[2487]: Failed to start
snap.snapcraft.snapcraft.237e42c2-4906-439b-a992-743647600bc6.scope.

At this point running snap will fail and the sandbox cannot be
completed.

I think the main problem is why create transient scope fails the way it
did, and whether systemd from bionic even works properly on a host with
unified hierarchy.

  transient scope could not be started error in bionic lxd container

Status in Snappy:
  New
Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  On my impish development host machine I tend to use lxd containers to
  support snap building and other tasks targeting different releases.
  Today I came to use a bionic container as per usual and found that I
  could not invoke any snap applications. I installed hello-world as the
  most simple test of running a snap app:

  ```
  ubuntu@b:~$ hello-world
  internal error, please report: running "hello-world" failed: transient scope
could not be started, job /org/freedesktop/systemd1/job/44 finished with result
failed
  ```

  I made sure the container had up to date packages in it (apt & snaps)
  and rebooted it. But the problem persisted. I then created a second
  container and installed hello-world in it and again the problem was
  reproducible. At the time of producing the following attachments I had
  not attempted to reboot the host.
