[Touch-packages] [Bug 1988270] Re: AppArmor fails to start with Yoga UCA libvirt profile on Focal

2022-10-20 Thread John Johansen
@hypothetical-lemon yes we plan to SRU the fix to focal however a fix is
only needed in the userspace. The fix is in the apparmor userspace
policy compiler, the kernel is just enforcing what the compiler is
incorrectly telling it to enforce.

  I just upgraded from hirsute to impish using do-release-upgrade. On

  which worked fine under hirsute). Both fail with:

  /user.slice/user-NNN.slice/session-1.scope is not a snap cgroup where
  NNN is my uid

  With firefox, I was able to fix the problem with:

  snap remove --purge firefox
  apt purge firefox
  apt install firefox

  Now firefox works. But I tried the same thing substituting chromium-
  browser for firefox, and it didn't help: chromium fails with the same
  error message.

  I guess there must be something left over from the hirsute version of
  snapd that isn't getting noticed or cleared by the impish version?

  Someone suggested this might be related to bug 1850667, but that bug
  is marked fixed as of a couple months ago, and I just did this upgrade
  today. Also, it doesn't mention the error message I'm seeing.

2022-10-20 Thread Tim Richardson
hi @mtu, in that case no confined snaps will work for you, which you are
probably noticing. Something is wrong with your installation, I think. At a
wild guess, try installing gdm3 and making it default. Or reinstall.
Speaking from my own experience, I have not seen this once in any upgrades
or installs (from a sample size including VMs which is > 10, one of which
is kubuntu 22.04 -> 22.10)

  Similar to:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/1847570

  Only difference is that it does not reset to HDMI output, but to one
  of my USB-outputs. It does not respect the change I made after reboot.

  In short:
  1. Boot system
  2. "Analogue Output - RODE NT-USB" is selected by default. I want to use
"Line Out - Built-in Audio", which I choose.
  3. Reboot.
  4 Output device is now back to "Analogue Output - RODE NT-USB".

Bug description:
  This is *probably* the wrong package, but it's the best I can figure
  for this, so here goes.

  Hardware: Kubuntu Focus XE, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, 11th Gen Intel Core
  i5, UEFI, no secure boot. Testing done in GNOME Boxes, BIOS, 4 GB RAM,
  50 GB disk space . OS is Ubuntu Desktop, Kinetic Final ISO.

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Boot the Ubuntu desktop ISO.
  2. Select "Install Ubuntu" and proceed with the installation process.
  3. When you get to the "Installation type" screen, select "Advanced Options",
and enable ZFS + Encryption.
  4. Proceed with the rest of the installation as normal.
  5. Reboot into the newly installed system.
  6. Log in.
  7. Run "sudo apt update" in a terminal.

  Expected result: The package database should be updated normally.

  Actual result: You are presented with the following errors at the end
  of the apt output:

  Reading package lists... Error!
  E: flAbsPath on /var/lib/dpkg/status failed - realpath (2: No such file or
directory)
  E: Could not open file - open (2: No such file or directory)
  E: Problem opening
  E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

  Notes: Switching to a TTY will print a crash error message related to the
same missing /var/lib/dpkg/status file. Running "sudo touch
/var/lib/dpkg/status" will allow "sudo apt update" to function and fix the
crashed process in the TTY.

  Once you log in, you'll notice that Firefox is missing (bug #1993279),
  and you will likely be presented with a ton of error messages and
  other scary junk. At least one of those error messages was related to
  update-manager in my experience, and another one was from "check-new-

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1960268] Re: SSL handshake failed - VPN SSL broken in 22.04

2022-10-20 Thread Michael Timblin
The comment by @fru1z (#32) worked for me on Ubuntu 22.04 with
GlobalProtect 5.3.1-36. Be sure to comment out the line mentioned in the
instructions. Adding the "Options = UnsafeLegacyRenegotiation" line by
itself did not work for me.

Bug description:
  New timezone data, with the following timezones impacted:
  - Palestine transitions are now Saturdays at 02:00. This means 2022 falls
    back 10-29 at 02:00, not 10-28 at 01:00.
  - Simplify three Ukraine zones into one.
  - Jordan and Syria switch from +02/+03 with DST to year-round +03.

  icu update to 2022e: https://unicode-
  org.atlassian.net/browse/ICU-22178

  Verification is done with 'zdump'. The first timezone that gets
  changed in the updated package is dumped with 'zdump -v
  $region/$timezone_that_changed' (this needs to be greped for in
  /usr/share/zoneinfo/). [For example: 'zdump -v Asia/Gaza'.] This is
  compared to the same output after the updated package got installed.
  If those are different the verification is considered done.

  [Test Case for all releases]
  1) zdump -v Asia/Gaza | grep 'Oct.*2022'
-> should indicate Oct 29, not Oct 28
  2) zdump -v Asia/Damascus | tail
-> last dates should be in 2022, not in 2499

  [Test Case for releases >= 20.04 LTS]

  For releases with ICU timezone data verification is done using the following
with dates before and after the change:
  1) sudo apt-get install python3-icu
  2) Run the following python script:

  from datetime import datetime
  from icu import ICUtzinfo, TimeZone
  tz = ICUtzinfo(TimeZone.createTimeZone("Asia/Gaza"))
  always_before = datetime(2022, 10, 1)
  now_before = datetime(2022, 10, 29)
  always_after = datetime(2022, 11, 1)
  assert(tz.utcoffset(always_before) == tz.utcoffset(now_before))
  assert(tz.utcoffset(now_before) != tz.utcoffset(always_after))

  The assertions would crash on 2022c.

  [Test Case for releases <= 20.04 LTS]

  Additionally, an upstream update of tzdata removed the 'old' SystemV
timezones, so we should ensure that they are kept in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and
earlier releases. Subsequently, these should be checked for using the following:
  diff <(zdump -v America/Phoenix | cut -d' ' -f2-) <(zdump -v SystemV/MST7 |
cut -d' ' -f2-)

  Nothing should be returned by the above command.

At least one of those error messages was related to
  update-manager in my experience, and another one was from "check-new-
  release-gtk".

Disabling Adobe Source Code Pro font on Ubuntu/Pop using font manager
and restarting writer largely fixes the issue for me.

I found this fix on reddit. The Source Code font from Adobe seems
problematic.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1993666] [NEW] Annoying constant background clinking noise

2022-10-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Recently my laptop is producing a constant clinking noise. The noise is
not load but it bothers after some time. However I noticed that noise
stops while playing any youtube video. There is no noise even if the
youtube sound is muted. However noise starts again after youtube video
is stopped or the (Chrome) browser window is closed. My laptop is Lenovo
Thinkpad X200 tablet.

  As of March 29, 2017, this source package did not contain dep8 tests in
  the current development release of Ubuntu, named Zesty. This was
  determined by running `pull-lp-source cyrus-sasl2 zesty` and then
  checking for the existence of 'debian/tests/' and
  'debian/tests/control'.

  Test automation is essential to higher levels of quality and confidence
  in updates to packages. dep8 tests [1] specify how automatic testing can
  be integrated into packages and then run by package maintainers before
  new uploads.

  This defect is to report the absence of these tests and to report the
  opportunity as a potential item for development by both new and
  experienced contributors.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1993081] Re: Installing samba-dev:i386 breaks Ubuntu 22.04.1.

2022-10-20 Thread Paride Legovini
Looks like the culprit here is python3, as doing

  apt install python3:i386

causes the removal of several important packages. This in a Jammy LXD
container and after doing `dpkg --add-architecture i386`.

The python3 package is marked Multi-Arch: allowed, so I would expect the
i386 package to be co-installable without breaking the world, but I'm
unsure on how this is supposed to be supported in Ubuntu (as Lucas
mentioned i386 is not officially supported). Maybe we're just inheriting
the Multi-Arch settings from Debian? I added a python3 task, let's see
if we can get more information from a Python maintainer.

Relevant output (use `-o Debug::pkgProblemResolver=yes` for more
verbosity):

root@paride-j:~# apt-get -s install python3.10-minimal:amd64
python3.10-minimal:i386

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created

The following information may help to resolve the situation:

  For doing simple things like "i just want to run this at the end of

  required to do so without possibly breaking other content that might
  be in it.

  ie, right now we have:

  # some comments here

  exit 0

  that makes it very difficult to add a command.

  2 solutions for this:
  1.) drop 'exit 0', its completely unnecessary
  2.) support runparts

  runparts means something that wants to simply add a script can do so,
  and it can easily be deleted.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1842320] Re: Can't boot: "error: out of memory." immediately after the grub menu

2022-10-20 Thread Adrien Nader
As I've said elsewhere, if we dedup firmware files through symlinks, we
can save 10MB in initrds. Compression does not help because the
compressors have very small compression windows and cannot see
redundancy in practice (this applies to xz to a lesser extent but even
for xz there is an improvement to be gained).

I don't know if it will be enough but it could tip us just below some
threshold and it's easy to implement. It should also save memory at
runtime.

And for reference, there's a working but weird work-around that only
touches initramfs.conf, keeps MODULES=most and is reasonably fast. Use
'xz' as the compress program and then add the following on a new line:

  export XZ_OPT=--lzma2=preset=0,dict=16M

(yes, it relies on implementation details of mkinitramfs)

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * In some cases, if the users’ initramfs grow bigger, then it’ll
  likely not be able to be loaded by grub2.

   * Some real cases from OEM projects:

  In many built-in 4k monitor laptops with nvidia drivers, the u-d-c
  puts the nvidia*.ko to initramfs which grows the initramfs to ~120M.
  Also the gfxpayload=auto will remain to use 4K resolution since it’s
  what EFI POST passed.

  In this case, the grub isn't able to load initramfs because the
  grub_memalign() won't be able to get suitable memory for the larger
  file:

  ```
  #0 grub_memalign (align=1, size=592214020) at ../../../grub-core/kern/mm.c:376
  #1 0x7dd7b074 in grub_malloc (size=592214020) at
  #8 0x7bcd5320 in ?? ()
  #9 0x7fe21250 in ?? ()
  #10 0x in ?? ()
  ```

  Based on grub_mm_dump, we can see the memory fragment (some parts seem
  likely be used because of 4K resolution?) and doesn’t have available
  contiguous memory for larger file as:

  ```
  grub_real_malloc(...)
  ...
  if (cur->size >= n + extra)
  ```

  Based on UEFI Specification Section 7.2[1] and UEFI driver writers’
  guide 4.2.3[2], we can ask 32bits+ on AllocatePages().

  As most X86_64 platforms should support 64 bits addressing, we should
  extend GRUB_EFI_MAX_USABLE_ADDRESS to 64 bits to get more available
  memory.

   * When users grown the initramfs, then probably will get initramfs
  not found which really annoyed and impact the user experience (system
  not able to boot).

  [Test Plan]

   * detailed instructions how to reproduce the bug:

  1. Any method to grow the initramfs, such as install nvidia-driver.

  2. If developers would like to reproduce, then could dd if=/dev/random
  of=... bs=1M count=500, something like:

  ```
  $ cat /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/zzz-touch-a-file
  #!/bin/sh
  PREREQ=""
  prereqs()
  {
  echo "$PREREQ"
  }
  case $1 in
  # get pre-requisites
  prereqs)
  prereqs
  exit 0
  ;;
  esac
  . /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hook-functions
  dd if=/dev/random of=${DESTDIR}/test-500M bs=1M count=500
  ```

  And then update-initramfs

   * After applying my patches, the issue is gone.

   * I did also test my test grubx64.efi in:

  1. X86_64 qemu with
  1.1. 60M initramfs + 5.15.0-37-generic kernel
  1.2. 565M initramfs + 5.17.0-1011-oem kernel

  2. Amd64 HP mobile workstation with
  2.1. 65M initramfs + 5.15.0-39-generic kernel
  2.2. 771M initramfs + 5.17.0-1011-oem kernel

  All working well.

  [Where problems could occur]

  * The changes almost in i386/efi, thus the impact will be in the i386 /
x86_64 EFI system.
  The other change is to modify the “grub-core/kern/efi/mm.c” but I use the
original addressing for “arm/arm64/ia64/riscv32/riscv64”.
  Thus it should not impact them.

  * There is a “#if defined(__x86_64__)” which intent to limit the >
  32bits code in i386 system and also

  ```
   #if defined (__code_model_large__)
  -#define GRUB_EFI_MAX_USABLE_ADDRESS 0x
  +#define GRUB_EFI_MAX_USABLE_ADDRESS __UINTPTR_MAX__
  +#define GRUB_EFI_MAX_ALLOCATION_ADDRESS 0x7fff
   #else
   #define GRUB_EFI_MAX_USABLE_ADDRESS 0x7fff
  +#define GRUB_EFI_MAX_ALLOCATION_A
Title:
  Policy needs improved feature versioning to ensure it is correctly
  being applied
Status in apparmor package in Ubuntu:
  New
Bug description:
  Currently allows pinning a single feature abi or running in a
  developer mode where the full abi available of the current kernel is
  enforced.
  However this can result in breaking applications in undesirable ways.
  If an application is shipped with its own policy, that policy might be
  different than the pinned feature abi, which can either result in
  denials because features the policy was not developed for are being
  enforced.
  If the feature version is not pinned then the most recent kernel abi
  is taken and applied to policy, which has not been updated. This can
  result in denials for userspace effectively breaking userspace. This
  is less than ideal for most users as it leads to a bad experience than
  they have not opted into and can lead to them disabling security
  protections.
2022-10-20 Thread Lukas Märdian
In bug #1992241 it is suggested that this problem is due to sd-networkd
relying on the file's timestamp to decide if the interface needs to be
re-started. Netplan generate/apply would re-create the (identical) files
in /run/systemd/network/10-netplan-*.network but those would have a
[Touch-packages] [Bug 1815101] Re: [master] Restarting systemd-networkd breaks keepalived, heartbeat, corosync, pacemaker (interface aliases are restarted)
2022-10-20 Thread Lukas Märdian
Thank you for the minimal reproducer!
Using that, I can reconstruct the issue in a Kinetic LXD container and I
can observe the logs as you do, especially the "eth0: Link DOWN" part.
Oct 20 13:43:47 test systemd-networkd[1276]: eth0: Reconfiguring with
/run/systemd/network/10-netplan-eth0.network.
Oct 20 13:43:47 test systemd-networkd[1276]: bond_all: Reconfiguring with
/run/systemd/network/10-netplan-bond_all.network.
Oct 20 13:43:47 test systemd-networkd[1276]: bond_all: DHCPv6 lease lost
Oct 20 13:43:47 test systemd-networkd[1276]: eth0: Link DOWN
Oct 20 13:43:47 test systemd-networkd[1276]: eth0: Lost carrier
Oct 20 13:43:47 test systemd-networkd[1276]: eth0: Configuring with
/run/systemd/network/10-netplan-eth0.network.
Oct 20 13:43:47 test systemd-networkd[1276]: bond_all: Configuring with
/run/systemd/network/10-netplan-bond_all.network.
Oct 20 13:43:47 test systemd-networkd[1276]: bond_all: DHCPv6 lease lost
Oct 20 13:43:47 test systemd-networkd[1276]: eth0: Link UP
Oct 20 13:43:47 test systemd-networkd[1276]: eth0: Gained carrier
I tried using override configs, but that didn't change anything.
# cat /etc/systemd/network/10-netplan-{eth0,bond_all}.network.d/override.conf
[Network]
KeepConfiguration=true
The same issue happens when calling "netplan apply", "networkctl
reconfigure eth0/bond_all" (which netplan apply is calling under the
hood) or "systemctl restart systemd-networkd.service".
I think there isn't a lot that netplan could do to avoid this, if sd-
networkd keeps on insisting to restart the interface. Would you mind
opening a bug report with the upstream systemd developers about this?
[Touch-packages] [Bug 1952107] Re: Google Contacts API Deprecated
2022-10-20 Thread V B
Hi again Affred and thank you very much for trying to help me. So, firstly,
just to be sure that there is no confusion, the way I configured my google
account in Ubuntu 22.04 is not in Evolution, but in Ubuntu Settings -> Online
Accounts, then Evolution automatically uses that account. In Online Accounts I
ticked all possible things to sync for my google account (including Contacts).
Like I said, entering the app password in Online Accounts is not accepted by
Ubuntu. Then I did, as you said, open the Seahorse app. When I look into that
with the filter set to "Show any" (so that it doeas not filter any entries
out), I see no entry for Address Book. The only entry I see is named "GOA
google credentials for identity account_xx_y" and it has a poassword
field (can be edited after clicking right on the entry and choosing Properties)
like:
{'authorization_code':
<'a'>,
'access_token':
<''>,
'access_token_expires_at': , 'refresh_token':
<'ccc'>}
So there is no password or app password part in the above field. I even
tried to replace that field with {'password': <''>},
where ee...ee will be the app password, or directly with ee...eee, but
no luck.
Any other suggestions please? Thank you very much.
[Touch-packages] [Bug 1842320] Re: Can't boot: "error: out of memory." immediately after the grub menu
2022-10-20 Thread Julian Andres Klode
Really the workaround is to set MODULES=dep in /etc/initramfs-
tools/initramfs.conf, this yields a much smaller initramfs (but you
can't take out the disk and boot it in another machine), disabling
secure boot or sgx should not be doing anything.
Bug description:
  [Impact]
   * In some cases, if the users’ initramfs grow bigger, then it’ll
  likely not be able to be loaded by grub2.
   * Some real cases from OEM projects:
  In many built-in 4k monitor laptops with nvidia drivers, the u-d-c
  puts the nvidia*.ko to initramfs which grows the initramfs to ~120M.
  Also the gfxpayload=auto will remain to use 4K resolution since it’s
  what EFI POST passed.
  In this case, the grub isn't able to load initramfs because the
  grub_memalign() won't be able to get suitable memory for the larger
  file:
  ```
  #0 grub_memalign (align=1, size=592214020) at ../../../grub-core/kern/mm.c:376
  #1 0x7dd7b074 in grub_malloc (size=592214020) at
../../../grub-core/kern/mm.c:408
  #2 0x7dd7a2c8 in grub_verifiers_open (io=0x7bc02d80, type=131076)
  at ../../../grub-core/kern/verifiers.c:150
  #3 0x7dd801d4 in grub_file_open (name=0x7bc02f00
"/boot/initrd.img-5.17.0-1011-oem",
  type=131076) at ../../../grub-core/kern/file.c:121
  #4 0x7bcd5a30 in ?? ()
  #5 0x7fe21247 in ?? ()
  #6 0x7bc030c8 in ?? ()
  #7 0x00017fe21238 in ?? ()
  #8 0x7bcd5320 in ?? ()
  #9 0x7fe21250 in ?? ()
  #10 0x in ?? ()
  ```
  Based on grub_mm_dump, we can see the memory fragment (some parts seem
  likely be used because of 4K resolution?) and doesn’t have available
  contiguous memory for larger file as:
  ```
  grub_real_malloc(...)
  ...
  if (cur->size >= n + extra)
  ```
  Based on UEFI Specification Section 7.2[1] and UEFI driver writers’
  guide 4.2.3[2], we can ask 32bits+ on AllocatePages().
  As most X86_64 platforms should support 64 bits addressing, we should
  extend GRUB_EFI_MAX_USABLE_ADDRESS to 64 bits to get more available
  memory.
   * When users grown the initramfs, then probably will get initramfs
  not found which really annoyed and impact the user experience (system
  not able to boot).
  [Test Plan]
   * detailed instructions how to reproduce the bug:
  1. Any method to grow the initramfs, such as install nvidia-driver.
  2. If developers would like to reproduce, then could dd if=/dev/random
  of=... bs=1M count=500, something like:
  ```
  $ cat /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/zzz-touch-a-file
  #!/bin/sh

  PREREQ=""

  prereqs()
  {
  echo "$PREREQ"
  }

  case $1 in
  # get pre-requisites
  prereqs)
  prereqs
  exit 0
  ;;
  esac

  . /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hook-functions
  dd if=/dev/random of=${DESTDIR}/test-500M bs=1M count=500
  ```
  And then update-initramfs
   * After applying my patches, the issue is gone.
   * I did also test my test grubx64.efi in:
  1. X86_64 qemu with
  1.1. 60M initramfs + 5.15.0-37-generic kernel
  1.2. 565M initramfs + 5.17.0-1011-oem kernel
  2. Amd64 HP mobile workstation with
  2.1. 65M initramfs + 5.15.0-39-generic kernel
  2.2. 771M initramfs + 5.17.0-1011-oem kernel
  All working well.
  [Where problems could occur]
  * The changes almost in i386/efi, thus the impact will be in the i386 /
x86_64 EFI system.
  The other change is to modify the “grub-core/kern/efi/mm.c” but I use the
original addressing for “arm/arm64/ia64/riscv32/riscv64”.
  Thus it should not impact them.
  * There is a “#if defined(__x86_64__)” which intent to limit the >
  32bits code in i386 system and also
  ```
   #if defined (__code_model_large__)
  -#define GRUB_EFI_MAX_USABLE_ADDRESS 0x
  +#define GRUB_EFI_MAX_USABLE_ADDRESS __UINTPTR_MAX__
  +#define GRUB_EFI_MAX_ALLOCATION_ADDRESS 0x7fff
   #else
   #define GRUB_EFI_MAX_USABLE_ADDRESS 0x7fff
  +#define GRUB_EFI_MAX_ALLOCATION_ADDRESS 0x3fff
   #endif
  ```
  If everything works as expected, then i386 should working good.
  If not lucky, based on “UEFI writers’ guide”[2], the i386 will get >
  4GB memory region and never be able to access.
just get one line multiple times: 'Exiting due to channel error.'.
  I found a bug report for Firefox that has a comment about a folk that get a
  I did the same, and worked! I used `apt source libwebp7` to get the source
and `apt build-dep libwebp` to install the dependencies. Than I executed
`export DEB_BUILD_MAINT_OPTIONS=optimize=-lto` to disable LTO and compiled from
source with `dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -uc -b`. No changes in the code.
Installed all relevant packages and browser started behaving correctly.
[Touch-packages] [Bug 1951491] Re: Can't run snaps: .slice/session-1.scope is not a snap cgroup
I'd like to re-interate that I use a regular Kubuntu installation,
  With firefox, I was able to fix the problem with:
  snap remove --purge firefox
  Now firefox works. But I tried the same thing substituting chromium-
  I guess there must be something left over from the hirsute version of
[Touch-packages] [Bug 1952107] Re: Google Contacts API Deprecated
2022-10-20 Thread Alfred Porter
If I recall, you need to open the Seahorse application and search for
"Address Book" entries.  These need to be changed to the app-specific
password you created in Google.  But when Evolution interactively asks
you for your Google account, you will still use the normal password that
goes along with that account.
[Touch-packages] [Bug 1952107] Re: Google Contacts API Deprecated
2022-10-20 Thread V B
Hi Alfred, I did create a app password in the Google account (I had to
enable the 2-step veryfication before doing it), but Gnome, in its
Online Contacts, does not accept my app password for the google account,
instead only the real google account password. Any instructions please
about how you configured Evolution (or Gnome) to use the app password?
Bug description:
  * Impact
  The google contacts integration with the GNOME component will stop working
since it relies on an API which is going to be shutdown
  * Testcase
  - use evolution
  - add a google account
  - go the contacts section
  The contacts stored on the google account should be listed, no error
  should be displayed
  * Regression potential
  The patch changes the google contact backend so any potential issue is likely
to be with contacts integration.
  I opened Evolution today and a red banner appeared on top with the
  following message:
  > Failed to connect address book “ : Contacts”
  > Invalid request URI or header, or unsupported nonstandard parameter:
  Contacts API is being deprecated. Migrate to People API to retain
  programmatic access to Google Contacts. See
  https://developers.google.com/people/contacts-api-migration.
  I found the upstream bug report for this[0], which references the commit[1]
that fixes it.
  However, that commit is in release 3.42.0, whereas Ubuntu 21.10 currently has
3.40.4-1. Is it possible to backport this commit so that Evolution will
continue to work properly?
