Title:
HUD not working for Firefox, LibreOffice & others in 18.04

Status in hud package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
In 16.04, invoking the HUD allowed commands to be typed which would
produce a list to choose from. In 18.04, pressing ALT does show the
empty HUD - but typing commands doesn't populate a list for some
  applications. I upgraded from 16.04 to 18.04.

  Not working:
Firefox, LibreOffice, Audacity (even with pasuspender)

  Working:
  Gedit

Other apps work, but don't display comprehensive menus like in 16.04.
Eg, gnome-terminal only shows a Terminal menu in the menu bar rather
than File, Edit, View etc that was present on 16.04. Other examples of
  these are Baobab, Nautilus.

Title:
[regression] compiz crashes after Mesa upgrade

Status in mesa package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in mesa source package in Xenial:
  Confirmed
Status in mesa source package in Artful:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  [Impact]
When I use the Unity session I automatically get logged out under these
conditions:

When I hover with my mouse over any icon of the sidebar.
When I press the alt key.
When I press the super key.

running dmesg after this unwanted logout happens I get following
  information:

  compiz[10616]: segfault at 0 ip 7fbca309feeb sp 7fff5f59a4d0
  error 4 in i965_dri.so[7fbca2af6000+7e4000]

This is caused by a mesa upgrade, which added a patch for bug #1727401. The
crasher is reproduced on:
  - gen4 / gen5 Intel
  - if using modesetting X driver, like when xserver-xorg-video-intel is not
installed, or the HWE stack is installed (xserver-xorg-core-hwe-16.04 defaults
to modesetting)

  [Test case]
Log in to Unity, open the dash or try to log out etc. Compiz shouldn't crash.

  [Regression potential]
The backported patches need to be tested, here for regressions and on 1727401
that they fix the original bug (again).

Best to test on a wide array of Intel HW:
  gen4 (965GM/GM45/G45)
  gen5 (Ironlake)
  gen6 (Sandy Bridge)
gen7 (Bay Trail, Ivy Bridge, Haswell)
  gen8 (Braswell, Broadwell)
gen9 (Apollo Lake, Skylake, Gemini Lake, Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake)

  3) Login. gnome-keyring unlocks "login" features including for google chrome
  4) gnome-keyring is not unlocked, chrome takes 2 minutes to open and with no
secure password features(sync) functioning.

For the past couple days, chrome on Ubuntu 16.04 takes a REALLY long
time (maybe 2 minutes) to start. Once chrome is started, I am not able
to sync and any secure password features are broken. I found out this
is due to gnome-keyring not being unlocked at login. There's also no
way to unlock the "login" portion of the keyring from the running
daemon by default. I have to kill the gnome-keyring process and start
without "--login" as a parameter. Then the "login" section shows up
which I'm able to unlock. From there chrome starts up instantly but
  asks the following:

Enter password to unlock your login keyring
The login keyring did not get unlocked when you logged into your computer

After that, all of it's sync and secure features are functional.

Starting google-chrome-stable from a command line at boot without
running the above workaround shows the following error messages:

Gkr-Message: secret service operation failed: Did not receive a reply.
Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1623530] Re: Apport should be disabled by default

2016-09-14 Thread TenLeftFingers
I'm working with small numbers, but experience the same issue. But I
would argue that if Apport is a part of a healthy Q.A. strategy then
leave it in place, but don't involve the user with those pesky popups at
login and run-time.

Title:
Apport should be disabled by default

Status in apport package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I work with large communities (US, India, Latin America) and almost
the number one issue they have with Ubuntu or simply scares them off
is the fact that errors keep popping up every time. Some times
multiples times per minutes, per hour, per day.

The reason is how apport works by default. The "solution" is going to
/etc/default/apport and setting the option to 0 (Disable). I do
understand the full benefit or submitting automatically all bug
reports, but this has gotten (And most Ubuntu users will be able to
confirm) out of hand with some many popup questions about some bug or
another that are simply fixed the moment the report is going to be
send (eg: Compiz issue that was fixed a couple of milliseconds later,
unity issue, dash issue, firefox issue, etc..). All of them have
mechanism to handle failures and basically heal themselves.

  The question regarding this is:

Leaving apport enable by default on an Ubuntu installation simply
scares or annoys end users (a lot may I add). Leaving it disabled, it
will not send a bug report, but there is no issue in simply creating
an ubuntu-bug report through the terminal. So the sending of the
report is still valid, but is not forced onto the user (And not forced
  so many times).

This report is back by about 3 years going back and forth with the
same apport issue and seeing probably around 500 users I have helped
myself with the same issue, since this makes Ubuntu less productive to
the actual user, even from start.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1611349] Re: Only 2GB video file is recorded

2016-08-25 Thread TenLeftFingers
I'm going to try to reproduce this. To clarify, can you say that the 2GB
limit was *not* caused by disk / partition getting full?

In the terminal you can run:
df -h

and it will tell you what percentage full each partition is. I believe
when I had an issue where the camera was warning me about space, it was
the /userdata partition that was 100% full. Moving stuff to the SD card
rectified it.

So again, in summary, can you say that the 2GB limit was not caused by
the disk or one of the partitions getting full?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1574020] Re: Can't use networkmanager from lightdm

I'm responding to Sebastien's comment on usecases here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-
manager/+bug/1574020/comments/35

The question is about the default setting for this and I would encourage
connections the user has established in the session to be available and
auto-connected from the greeter so that remote shares can be mounted at
login for apps that need them, for example.

I have noticed this problem in both my desktop (Broadcom WiFi) and
Laptop (Intel WiFi) - So it has nothing to be with the chip.

Feel free to ask for more info.

Title:
HP hs2340 HSPA+ Mobile Broadband Modem does not work

Status in modemmanager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in modemmanager package in Debian:
  New

Bug description:
  Description: Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS
  Release: 10.04
  network-manager:
Installed: 0.8-0ubuntu3.2

I have installed Ubuntu 10.04.2 on HP Probook 6560b. The internal
Mobile Broadband Modem is HP hs2340, which is correctly identified.

In neither the LTS release or the live CD of Oneiric Ocelot Alpha 3
release does Mobile Broadband work 'out of the box'

After fiddling around, I finally got the modem working. The missing
bit was to do a hard shutdown from Windows, leaving the modem to an
enabled state. After that, the connection worked instantly.

  Some remarks:
  =
  - network-manager should really provide more information to what it is doing.
In all previous attempts, network-manager would be doing something for a while
with no result or error message

  - rfkill always listed the hp-wwan as 'not blocked'

[Touch-packages] [Bug 269441] Re: Trash always full

2016-06-22 Thread TenLeftFingers
Logging out and back in clears it on 16.04 64-bit. Until next time, of
course. I only installed fresh today so I'll try to itemize potential
actions to trigger this. I had:

Deleted files from a mounted samba share
Deleted local files with standard permissions (downloaded debs from
Telegram.com, skype.com)
Deleted email attachments (.doc and .xls - encrypted, came from a windows user).

I'll monitor this and post back if there's anything useful to add.

I thought this report (comment #8 specifically, which describes the

  3. wait until active call screen appears
  4. navigate back to the keypad
  5. tap the now green indicator bar to return back to call
  6. tap the tone dial in call controls

  7. Actual result: One the first, 2nd or 3rd tap the screen is frozen. Even if
you hang up the phone you called from, the screen remains. Sometimes the screen
freezes when you try to navigate back and forth from keypad to active call. Try
several different ways.
A few times, I was able to hang up the phone I was calling from but the
active call screen stayed on the device. The only way to make the phone app
work again was to force quit it.

As an alternative route. Try to call the phone when the phone-app is
running. Accept the call and wait until the active call screen
appears. Try to interact with the tone dial icon in the call controls.
I was able to reproduce the freeze this way as well.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1568544] Re: Scopes are smoothest with no microSD card

2016-04-10 Thread TenLeftFingers
Some more info: the card is a class 4 card which according to articles
like this one http://pocketnow.com/android/does-using-a-faster-sdcard-
make-your-phone-faster

can slow down a phones performance. So perhaps it's just the nature of
the hardware, but I'd rather have the bug rejected than not mention it.

Bug description:
I removed my microSD card for the first time on the day the OTA-10
update arrived. After the update, the scopes were smooth as silk and I
thought this was as a result of the OTA. But after re-inserting the
microSD card they are back to their normal way; smooth for a few
minutes, jerky for a few minutes.

Card: SanDisk 16GB Micro SD HC
Scopes: Today, Apps, My Videos, Dictionary, Simon's Cat, Discerning Duck,
Crafting, Command Line

This is 100% reproducable on every ocassion now when I remove or
insert the card and either symptom remains - ie, it's not something

I have the Log Viewer app installed. I can upload any logs requested.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1550582] Re: Cant delete messages

2016-03-28 Thread TenLeftFingers
Hi,

Selecting all messages and choosing delete worked for me when I left the
device untouched overnight. As a result I can't currently reproduce the
issue because my list of messages is only two screens long (it was tens
of screens long originally).

In time I will be able to reproduce this issue and I will post back the
adb output.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1377996] Re: dialer is freezing on active call screen

2016-03-26 Thread TenLeftFingers
Thanks Pat. The swipe-away and reloading of the dailer in comment #2
does work. Due to the length of time that process takes to get to a
working UI again (at least ten seconds) it's doesn't prevent me getting
into unwanted answering machines (I know you weren't suggesting it as a
solution).

.cache/upstart/application-legacy-dialer-app-.log
This doesn't exist, so I've tarred up the contents of .cache/upstart and
attached it.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1490347] Re: [Regresision] 15:10 - Cannot pair with devices using PIN codes

2016-02-24 Thread TenLeftFingers
Ingredients:

1 Apple bluetooth keyboard
Ubuntu 15.10 install (64-bit) on a Dell Studio 1535
USB bluetooth adapter

The exact steps are:
Go to All Settings -> Bluetooth
Ensure Bluetooth is set to 'On' and Ubuntu device/machine 'Visibility' is 'ON'
Click the + sign to add a new bluetooth device
Turn on the bluetooth keyboard and wait for it to show up in the list of
detected devices
Select from the list and choose one of the PIN options (I've tried them all).
Click Next
Text 'Connecting to" appears

Actual outcome:
Then: "Setting up 'Jarlath Reidy's Keyboard' failed" displays with options to
retry or quit.

Expected outcome:
Device should connect and be fully operational as it did with 14.04.

Bug description:
Bluez 5.3 does not have support for pairing with devices (such as

  A mouse pairs correctly.

From my research it seems as if the ChromeOS project developed patches
to fix this and they are supposed to have been included in Bluez 5.4
(that statement dated April 2013) but I've not yet identified them.

"The agent's implementation in bt_console/bluetoothctl upstream is
incomplete, missing some functions like DisplayPincode."

  https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=222661

Along with the loss of Headset profiles meaning VoIP applications can
no longer use HSP/HFP profiles (requiring functionality yet to land in
Ofono) this cripples the use of Bluetooth for much else than A2DP or
  mouse input.

Attempting to pair with, for example, an Apple Wireless Keyboard that
pairs and works correctly with 14.04 LTS, fails totally on 15.10.

The mouse shown below is already paired, connected, and working.

Can I ask if any of you still affected by this issue have installed

Perhaps I should have commented here instead of at

Is there anything I should provide in this report?

I hope this is released as a hot-fix and not queued up for the next OTA.

freezes when you try to navigate back and forth from keypad to active call. Try
several different ways.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1499069] Re: display freezes after hanging up a phonecall

2016-01-28 Thread TenLeftFingers
I'm not sure if it's the same case but in my case, after making or
receiving a call I can no longer use the dialpad or hang up. It means I
cannot navigate automated call-centers and that I cannot hang up before
getting through to voicemail because rebooting the phone isn't fast
enough.

This is a critical issue for such basic functionality.

Same here. I cannot end a call.

Also, the result of this issue is that if I get through to voicemail I have to
reboot the phone.
Also, for companies where I have to use the keypad to navigate departments, no
keypresses are recognised.
Time does not increment.

Recommend 'critical' for this, unless it's a dupe of

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1458704] Re: Cannot use online banking with Bank of Ireland

I used this method to make it RW as the above didn't work for me:

sudo phablet-shell never returns anything except a blinking cursor. I
take it 14.04 isn't a good choice for this. I could install 15.10 in a
VM if that would work?

Many thanks for your advice!

Replace all system settings related entries by one system setting

If e.g. a user types 'privacy' in the Dash, instead of displaying the
privacy icon (current state), the system setting icon appears with an
additional text 'privacy' – see attached image. When the user clicks
on the icon, he gets directly to the privacy options in the system

This way we reduce the clutter by 23 icons without reducing

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1500467] Re: Aggregator reloading needs rethinking

2015-09-28 Thread TenLeftFingers
Hi Kyle,

Thanks for your response and for correcting the assignment of the bug :)
Regarding #1, I don't think there is an issue with the message app (at
least from the users point of view). The issue is if I send you an sms
now, it will not show on the Today scope until it has done a refresh. I
only mention it to highlight that the refresh requirements of each child
scope differ so much and that this dissonance suggests to me that the
refresh activity should be left to the children.

Regarding #2, thanks for the link. I did go through the few reports for
the Today scope before filing, but not the Day ones.

Congratulations to all involved for a lovely scope. It's now the
'landing' scope on my phone and allows me to use my phone much more
efficiently than my previous iOS/Android phones.

Best,
Jarlath

Title:
  Aggregator reloading needs rethinking

Status in Today Scope:
  New
Status in unity-scopes-api package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The Today scope is basically a place-holder for 'sub scopes'. The
today scope has three problems which cannot both be resolved under the
  current system. These are:

  1) The scope is reloading at times I do not want it to
  2) The scope has not got the latest data (eg sms message) when I want it
  3) When the Today scope reloads, not only is it slow (BQ 4.5) but it also
takes down the entire scope system with it for a few seconds.

The problem is that when the Today scope refreshes/reloads, it reloads
all sub-scopes. However, Weather and Today do not need to be reloaded
for 24 hours at a time (maybe weather is an exception here).

I think the Today scope should be a 'dumb placeholder' and the sub-
scopes should be responsible for calling for refresh. The parent
(Today scope) could then refresh an _individual_ sub-scope using ajax
or similar. This would improve all three issues above but challenge
  some other fundamentals, eg:

  4) Scopes should be stateless (according to current thinking)

I would challenge this also, as it would solve the issue where the My
Music scope shows the user their music sorted by artist, even after
they have changed it to album sorting.

The Today scope has come a long way since I got the phone in April and
I now have it enable since the latest update a few weeks ago. But the
issues I describe above are 'as expected' behaviour and I think this
  itself is the bug.

2015-09-27 Thread TenLeftFingers
>From conversations on #ubuntu-touch it seems that the decision for this
default came about because it was supposed it would result in fewer
entries on the list. This is flawed logic as my case proves and I would
consider both album and artist views equal in terms of the number of
entries they produce in the display.

Given they are equal in this regard, I would consider the album view
more important to the user/visually.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1447395] Re: Zoom needed for better readability

2015-08-29 Thread TenLeftFingers
Thanks Olivier. I have readability but as you say, it's not the best
work flow. Perhaps I should file a wishlist for this if it's tangiental
to the zoom issue.

There’s unfortunately no way to make this bug a child of the other one,
it’s either a duplicate or nothing. I’ll tentatively mark this one a
duplicate of the other one, and I’ll add the information in this bug
report to the other one to make sure we review this use case when fixing
 streaming.

flash vs html5 etc to answer that. But I thought that Safari on iOS

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1443020] Re: browser crashes on image-heavy pages

2015-07-31 Thread TenLeftFingers
I'm seeing this issue several times a day too. I'm not sure if images
alone are the problem. I get varied results depending how I use the tab
I'm in but it seems that the more pages I navigate to with the same tab,
the closer I get encountering the issue.

For example, go to www.newstalk.com and scroll to the bottom of the
page. Everything is fine until you scroll back to the top and the get
the dreaded white page.

m.independent.ie is another example. After browsing a few articles it
has just happened to me. But in a new tab, I'm using it for five minutes
now and it's fine.

Note that the URL bar is not accessible when the page turns white. I
will add more example URLs to this report as I encounter them.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1354391] Re: [browser] Can't download random files

2015-07-30 Thread TenLeftFingers
I think this is the same issue so I'll add it here. Please let me know
if I should file a separate bug:

Avi does not work at all because the browser asks which app to open with, but
only suggests the Gallery app. It then downloads the .avi to
.cache/com.ubuntu.gallery/HubIncoming/4/
The Gallery app doesn't show the movie afterwards so it is inaccessible and
difficult to delete unless you know how to use the terminal.

2015-05-02 Thread TenLeftFingers
This has happened again today, but not with the browser - with the
dailing app. I'm attaching a screenshot to show it put I think this
might need to be reassigned to a lower-level package.

One thing of note is that the dialer app displayed initially as a low-
res image (suspended?) initially. Let me know what logs to provide.

This has happened with two apps so far, Browser and Dialer, but not both
at the same time.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1446763] Re: There should be a mechanism to detect login-protected WiFis

I'm not very knowledgeable on 'captive portals' but since I was in fact
able to connect to the internet/use a web browser, I think that the
first bug (1245878) is no the same. My issue isn't that the connection
wasn't ultimately possible, but that the Ubuntu One sign up process
ignored that the connection had been established.

Settings - Accounts - Ubuntu One signin reported an error (network

I returned to the browser which led me to the routers page for
accepting their T's C's and the connection became available (I could
  now browse the web).

Returning to the Ubuntu One signin screen, I re-entered my
authentication details but got the same error continuously. Rebooting
  solved the issue.

  EXPECTED:
After establishing the connection, Ubuntu One account signin should have
recognised that a connection had become available.
