[Trisquel-users] How to build Debian Experimental source on Trisquel?
We mentioned HandBrake in another thread and the fact that it includes some non-free code for AAC encoding. A fully free (as far as I can tell) version of HandBrake exists in Debian Experimental. I tried to install the .deb package in Brigantia but couldn't because of unfulfilled (libavcodec) dependencies. So then I downloaded the source code and tried to figure out how to build it... and failed miserably T that :). There are actually two downloads on the Debian HandBrake page : 1. The source code : http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/h/handbrake/handbrake_0.9.8+dfsg1.orig.tar.bz2 2. The Debian patches (which for instance remove the non-free AAC encoder) : http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/h/handbrake/handbrake_0.9.8+dfsg1-2.debian.tar.gz So now I have a ~/handbrake directory, containing two directories: debian and handbrake_0.9.8+dfsg1. My knowledge of building source code is limited to ./configure, sudo make install / sudo checkinstall, and that didn't help me build that code... Can anyone point me to some step-by-step procedure that will let me generate a local .deb package on my machine from that source code, including of course the Debian patches for that package? Or is there some magic call that does it all in one step? Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] FSF hands out Trisquel at a Microsoft store
Till now? What's the new perfect distro, then?
Re: [Trisquel-users] FSF hands out Trisquel at a Microsoft store
TRISQUEL IS THE PERFECT DISTRO TILL NOW COMPARED TO OTHERS. TRY IT AND YOU WILL SEE.
[Trisquel-users] Re : FSF hands out Trisquel at a Microsoft store
For people having a better government, I recall that libdvdcss can be easily obtained. Just fire this command in a terminal: sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
Re: [Trisquel-users] FSF hands out Trisquel at a Microsoft store
DVDs are perfectly fine. /Encrypted/ DVDs don't work (and unfortunately many DVDs are encrypted) without a program that at least my government has censored (like DeCSS), but as far as I'm aware, Ubuntu has no ability to do any better in this department.
Re: [Trisquel-users] FSF hands out Trisquel at a Microsoft store
I've played multiple dvd's on trisquel. No idea where that nonsense came from.
Re: [Trisquel-users] FSF hands out Trisquel at a Microsoft store
I also read something about "not being able to play your DVDs". I haven't actually tried in Trisquel, but libdvdread4 seems to be installed by default. I recall Ubuntu leaving that package out of their distro by default. And a similar situation with Fedora. > but spreads misinformation nevertheless (e.g. 'you won't be able to listen to your mp3s'). Interestingly, I recall Fedora, a popular distro, can't play MP3s out of the box for patent reasons. But what can you expect? It's Slashdot. :-)
[Trisquel-users] Re : FSF hands out Trisquel at a Microsoft store
Some of the comments dismissing Trisquel are sad because they show clearly that the person commenting has never tried Trisquel, but spreads misinformation nevertheless (e.g. 'you won't be able to listen to your mp3s').

Trisquel mentioned on Slashdot today: http://news.slashdot.org/story/12/12/21/2212202/gnu-hands-out-trisquel-at-a-microsoft-store
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fonts & Font rendering
The default DE, GNOME, has font rendering settings that can be found: * In Applications Menu, * System Settings, * Advanced Settings, * Fonts section on the left. You can change your hinting and antialiasing options from here to suit your screen.

Not all licenses using this term are GPL-incompatible, see e.g. https://gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#CeCILL (most are, the reasons to use this term and to make GPL-incompatible licenses are probably correlated). > It is true there is no "man" page, but there is an "info" page, so > there again is no reason to have this weirdness going on. Both kinds of documentation have different uses. (I like your concise explanation of these licensing issues.) pgpYsQRZvMs20.pgp Description: PGP signature

There are obvious things that its maintainer could do if he wanted it to be used in GNU/Linux distributions (e.g. use a GPL-compatible permissive license instead of CDDL). The issue of changing program names in modified versions is mentioned by the FSF, this requirement is barely acceptable in some cases (https://gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#LPPL-1.2) and is not considered to be required by the GPL. There probably are better arguments to use if there really is a GPL violation. pgpihrr1lF0Qt.pgp Description: PGP signature
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fonts & Font rendering
Maybe you need to install better fonts, http://packages.trisquel.info/search?keywords=ttf- lists some. There are various hinting-related options of fontconfig that change how the fonts look, your DE probably has settings for it (or look in /etc/fonts). Maybe you have some screenshots to compare it? pgp4EEHcZp8uW.pgp Description: PGP signature
[Trisquel-users] Fonts & Font rendering
I just tried trisquel and I liked the desktop. However, the fonts & font rendering seems to be not that good, especially when I compare to font & font rendering on ubuntu desktop. I have also noticed that debian has very bad fonts and after years of waiting the situation does not seem to improve. However I think debian is mostly for servers, so perhaps its fonts do not matter. Is it just my eyes, or is there a reason why the fonts & font rendering in trisquel is poor? Is there a way to fix it?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Will an upgrade from 4 to 6 be smooth?
My suggestion for you: Backup ALL your data and install a FRESH 6.0 version. Good luck.
Re: [Trisquel-users] unity-2d fork
I stand corrected. Sorry for the silly interjection. (And what a funny thing to have, wonder why they bothered...)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Will an upgrade from 4 to 6 be smooth?
Sorry to revisit and old thread (for which no one replied) but I ran "sudo update-manager -d" to update 4 to 4.5 and was unable to do so. Gave me an error about missing packages. I hope 4 to 6 update is possible. :-(
Re: [Trisquel-users] unity-2d fork
Abrowser in the Ubuntu repos is a transitional package that installs Firefox. Trisquel's repos offer a complete unbranded package.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Dos screen
In that case you need to make a xorg.conf file. What kind of graphics card do you have there? You can use this command to find out: (it's case sensitive) lspci -nn|grep VGA
[Trisquel-users] Re : Dos screen
There is, somewhere in the "System Settings", an icon related to configuring the display. It should list the possible resolutions given you screen and your graphical card (which is?).
