Maybe you need to install better fonts, http://packages.trisquel.info/search?keywords=ttf- lists some.
There are various hinting-related options of fontconfig that change how the fonts look, your DE probably has settings for it (or look in /etc/fonts). Maybe you have some screenshots to compare it?
