I don't know although you should be able to install GNOME after running the Trisquelizer script.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Remote Support (aka Teamviewer Replacement)
It would be great if there was a solution to this problem. If there was software written for it there would need to be a server in the middle. That could then be charged for as a service and fund the project. If users don't want to pay they could always install the software themselves on there own server.

Dunno if this is worth mentioning but the package names on http://jxself.org/linux-libre/ contain a non-breaking hyphen which looks exactly like the regular hyphen but should you copy paste that to apt-get install, it will give you an error about no such package. Could confuse somebody. Would the layout fall apart if a regular hyphens were used instead?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Reset Compiz
Practically all programs that your run without admin privileges store their settings in files in your home folder. Those files are usually either named with the name of the program or are in directories with such names. I haven't used Compiz, but you can search for files/directories '*compiz*' in your home folder and delete them. I'm pretty sure that this will reset your configuration. You can search like this in a terminal: find -name '*compiz*' Then remove directories and files you find. After that, logout and login. I'm not really familiar with Compiz although there is an a purge option with apt-get that in theory should remove the configuration files. This will only remove system wide configuration files, not user settings. Those are stored in /etc, not in the home folder. For most programs this won't reset user settings.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Remote Support (aka Teamviewer Replacement)
It would be easy to implement such a remote support server which would make it impossible for server owner ( you ) to spy on traffic or gain remote control over a client. Simply have both sides generate and exchange public keys and then encrypt packets with them. I could write such a program, if someone didn't already do it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Remote Support (aka Teamviewer Replacement)
Simply have both sides generate and exchange public keys and then encrypt packets with them. This is where all the difficulty in cryptographic protocols starts: why wouldn't the server be able to change the key? The way SSH handles this might be practical for this purpose. Since reading about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interactive_Connectivity_Establishment I think it's not the only interesting part in this project. pgpJtdcAcukTc.pgp Description: PGP signature

[Trisquel-users] Suspend and hibernate problems
Hi there! I used to be able to suspend and hibernate on 5.5. I've got an old Radeon that needed nomodeset to use some UMS quirks. Now on 6.0 if I add the nomodeset boot parameter, I get a black screen at bootup and a hang immune to magic sysrq. If I try to suspend without nomodeset, it's like in 5.5, when resuming all I get is a black screen. I've tried to fool around with radeon_combios.c to make it work in KMS but with no success. My best result here was a kernel panic when resuming. I also compiled a custom kernel with Radeon's depracated UMS support enabled but the behavior is the same. lspci -nn|grep VGA 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Radeon XPRESS 200M 5955 (PCIE) [1002:5955] Any words of wisdom gratefully accepted.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Remote Support (aka Teamviewer Replacement)
SSH does nearly the same, with keys used once per machine. Password isn't imo a good word for this: they should be random, not user-generated. The most obvious way to implement such encrypted passwords allows the data to be decoded later when the attacker (i.e. server operator) gets one of the private keys. (There are special key exchange protocols that solve this problem.) What I think we should do: 1. use existing protocols for all things involving cryptography or sending the data; SSH has well-known solutions for authentication 2. maybe use a custom protocol for requesting access and getting VNC server addresses (SIP solves a similar problem). Or maybe use existing IM protocols or email for it? 3. make hosting servers for it as easy as possible, maybe just require a TURN server (that users interested in federated VoIP will already have) and maybe a simple service for 2. There already are solutions hosted by others. 4. have less options than VNC has. pgpAwTnjVm0wi.pgp Description: PGP signature

Thanks to all of you! I collected your advices and sent them to my friend. I will post his experiences with this alternatives and if he managed to make the jump, but this will probably take some time (at the moment, he has much to do with tests and so on).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Remote Support (aka Teamviewer Replacement)
Key randomness should not interfere with user-friendliness. Client: Send(PublicKey); SupportGuy: Receive(PublicKey); NewKey = GenerateStrongRandomKey(); Send(EncryptWithPubKey(doughnut), EncryptWithPubKey(NewKey)); Client: Receive(NewKey); DecryptAndCheckPassword(NewKey); From now on they communicate with a strong random key. Server operator has 1 guess per connection. That is not enough: Even if original password is 3 english-alphabet characters long chances are ~0.57% Access request (Sending initial password) should be manual part.

I miscalculated probability. My bad :( It is 1/26 * 1/26 * 1/26 * 100 = 0.0057%

Re: [Trisquel-users] Remote Support (aka Teamviewer Replacement)
Aaah I don't know whats with my brain this morning... Anyway... I failed at the part where New key is sent... Doughnut should be encrypted as a part of new password to prevent operator from extracting it and sending its own key... Send(EncryptWithPubKey(doughnut + NewKey)); // + means concat This way, security problem no longer exists... Advanges? I don't know how ssh works in detail.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Remote Support (aka Teamviewer Replacement)
I din't know that this would be an issue. Well-known professional cryptographers designed protocols that were later broken, it's not easy to make a secure one. Most tasks for which security is important use TLS or SSH, many security people know how SSH works and much research was done for its security. A custom protocol won't get such support. On Monday 03 June 2013 05:59 PM, onp...@gmail.com wrote: For torrents, Transmission. What do you mean by peer-to-peer? peer-to-peer is network where your device (only if it is a part of it) acts as client as well as a server. Like in torrent you download from many other devices(peer) and you upload to other devices as well. Gnunet and gnutella are such other peer-to-peer networks I think!

[Trisquel-users] Antwort: Remote Support (aka Teamviewer Replacement)
Well, I am fairly sure that protocol i proposed is secure because it relies on the fact that public key cryptography works. Thing is that after both sides „agree” on new randomly generated key you can tell the operator that the key was doughnut but it won't matter anymore and session will remain secure. And operator is unable to insert his key because initial „easy” key was transmited using third party. One key can be reused (assuming you didnt tell it to operator) and it would still not matter because operator has 1 guess per session. Its secure :)

Re: [Trisquel-users] ath9k_htc WiFi Update
Is there an effort to submit this firmware to the Ubuntu repos to replace the prior Atheros ones for Ubuntu 12.04 and above? The 12.04.2 CD comes with the Quantal kernel (3.5) installed by default and the upcoming 12.04.3 release will have the Raring kernel (3.8) installed by default which will make use of the firmware. Of course versions of Ubuntu greater than 12.04 will have support for this firmware and if this gets pushed to Debian unstable, that will guarantee a future release uses it by default. P.S. In the past, Jason brought over the 3.5 kernel to Trisquel 6 from the lts-quantal package, but are there plans as well to bring over the 3.8 kernel from the lts-raring package?

Are you in contact with Canoncial or the maintainer on Launchpad of the firmware to make the firmware switch? To make it easy, they can just copy over the 1.3.2 version of Jason's firmwares or do you recommend they recompile from source? I agre that Debian should have their atheros-firmware packages in the main be free software only and a seperate atheros-firmware-nonfree in their non-free repositories. Simple enough ey? :-P

[Trisquel-users] Saving Power With sleepd and pm-suspend-hybrid
One of the things I missed when I ditched That-Other-OS for Trisquel was an advanced power management option that suspended and hibernated my netbook automatically. Some desktop environments come with power management components that handle some of this, but I was dissatisfied with those and wanted a more system-wide solution anyway. I prefer the system daemon sleepd, which runs at startup and puts the computer to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity. The package provides sleepctl which lets you pause/resume the automatic suspend, and there are other options to set: see man sleepd and edit /etc/default/sleepd to change the options of sleepd. This didn't go far enough for me, though, because I wanted my netbook to switch from suspend to full hibernation after longer periods of inactivity. On my netbook (an HP-Mini), the package pm-utils handles suspend and hibernate perfectly with the commands pm-suspend, pm-hibernate, and pm-suspend-hybrid. In the manpages under man pm-actions, I found my answer: pm-suspend-hybrid has a default setting that wakes the computer up from sleep and puts it into hibernation after 15 more minutes. To activate this automatically, you just have to change the settings of sleepd in /etc/default/sleepd with the option --sleep-command pm-suspend-hybrid. Now my netbook saves power optimally if I leave it alone for long by sleeping after 10 minutes, or hibernating after 25 minutes. I'm very happy I found a solution to my little preference. Now, I hope I can solve out my Synaptic touchpad, and I'll have taken care of my most niggling little problems since I chose freedom over convenience. I haven't tried any yet, but here are some more tips about saving power in the Trisquel wiki: http://trisquel.info/en/wiki/optimizing-battery-time
