[Trisquel-users] Trisquel: First Impressions

2013-12-15 Thread retro
Hi, I'm new to Trisquel and this forum. I moved from Windows to Linux Mint a
few months ago, and finally got around to trying out the Trisquel distro that
was on a free cover disc.

I had a problem with the screen resolution (I couldn't change it) which made
using the system difficult, and it turned out that the distro on the cover
disc was 32-bit so I proceeded to download and install the 64-bit version.
This caused a total freeze (kernel panic - no keyboard etc) on rebooting, so
I searched the forum.

I found the solution posted by malberts in the Screen Resolution topic (I
don't know why this topic was locked), but it involved upgrading the kernel
so I left it for a bit because I've never done things like that. I eventually
came back to it and followed the steps given by malberts, and it worked! Now
I have the correct screen resolution and no kernel panic, and I am very
impressed with the desktop environment. I will try using it for software
development, and see how it goes.

Any comments on electricity consumption?
Well, higher power usage means it will

*cost more
*get hotter
*get louder if it has a fan

Depending on the usage of the server, you might be more interested in either
power usage when idle or power usage when operating at maximum speed.

Re: [Trisquel-users] how to choose server hardware?

2013-12-15 Thread dudeski
Well, just a mailserver should be able to run on basically everything. Now
making it keep up with spam is of course another matter entirely. =p
GPU doesn't matter at all for a server, normally you'd want it headless and
just manage via SSH or something.
(Unless there was some kind of server application that could utilize OpenCL
or whatever.. But somehow I doubt that's relevant for an email server.)

I use an older laptop to do SSH and a Minecraft server, it seems to work just
fine really. In terms of power consumption I'd recommend enabling the CPU
frequency scaling and whatever other power saving you can. 90% of the time a
home server isn't doing much, might as well keep it cool. =p

[Trisquel-users] Software that interactively lies to people

2013-12-15 Thread fernando . negro
All of us already know that, for proprietary (/closed source) software,
there's no way of knowing if the interfaces that we're using are telling us
the truth, or not. And that, from what has been discovered, a good amount of
the privacy agreements, that big corporations present to people who use
their proprietary software and operating systems, are just a joke - i.e. a
huge lie.

But, what about when you have software that interactively (and verbally) lies
to you, when confronted with questions, made to determine its honesty (and
even tries to hide the fact that it exists) in quite a good manner, capable
of deceiving the most naïve?

http://www.prisonplanet.com/meet-the-robot-telemarketer-who-denies-shes-a-robot.html

It's corporate lying software, taken to a whole new level(!)...

(And, I don't know about you... But, this is all starting to make me envision
a near future with a type of artificial intelligence interactive and

Re: [Trisquel-users] malware

2013-12-15 Thread onpon4
Actually, there are no such programs for detecting GNU/Linux viruses and
other malware. ClamAV detects Windows viruses so that you don't infect
Windows systems. Viruses for GNU/Linux systems are a curiosity at best right
now, because on most GNU systems the only files they could possibly infect
without you typing your password are those in your home directory.

As mentioned, you're going to be fine if you stick to the repos. If you
don't, you can prevent theoretical serious problems by just not giving any
programs downloaded from somewhere outside the repo root privileges unless
you've checked or had someone else check the source code. The worst that
could happen is your home directory being messed up.

But this is just theoretical right now. Nobody bothers writing malware for
GNU/Linux systems; it isn't worth the effort. You're far more likely to lose
your files to a hard drive failure than you are to lose your files to a
trojan horse or virus. Just keep your system up-to-date and you'll be fine.

Re: [Trisquel-users] malware

2013-12-15 Thread dudeski
Oh avoiding malware is easy, no need for any AV stuff.. Just follow the three

What are the mail transfer agent options, other than Postfix and Send Mail?
Is Postfix probably the best choice?

Are there any good ones that are easy for beginners? Or that have
easy-to-follow documentation?

Re: [Trisquel-users] malware

2013-12-15 Thread onpon4

That's what backups are for.

The threat of some malicious program is hugely lower than the threat of your
hard drive failing, and it's very easy to fix if you have backups: just
delete your home folder. Problem solved. With a hard drive failure, you have
to buy a new hard drive and install the OS on it all over again.

And like I said, it's all theoretical right now anyway. Nobody bothers
writing malware for GNU/Linux systems because of a combination of the
difficulty of making it effective and GNU/Linux systems not being all that
popular on PCs.

@ssdclickofdeath , I am unable to find any setting that allows disabling

calls without even letting me know there's an incoming call, it is a bug.

Ok, for a moment let us assume this is a feature. How am I to know that I am

before the call begins.

@dudeski This is not my line of thinking. How about trying this out before
calling it a feature? I have checked each and every setting in Empathy too. I
found no option to enable or disable auto-answering.

1) I am a KDE user myself. But I would like to see gnomeshell bugs fixed
because it is very likely to be the default desktop of next Trisquel. You
cannot expect every new user to find some other DE that works, after
installing Trisquel. This is not my personal problem.

2) Yes, Gnome shell is made this way. IM is closely integrated with the
desktop. This integration seems to be a part of the desktop and IM works from
inside the DE. And Empathy is part of gnome. That is how it works. I don't
know how to replace pidgin with Empathy in THIS CASE. (Pidgin cannot replace
Empathy here. That's another topic by the way... )

3) It auto answers by default. It doesn't even ring or make any notification
to prepare the user for a call. The call simply begins.

I appreciate if you could actually USE the desktop and see. If you don't want
to replicate the issue, please don't assume things. This is a serious privacy
issue.

It is not Empathy that auto answers. (When you start Empathy, auto answering
