Re: [Trisquel-users] On screen notifications
Unfortunately and incredibly, no. The Gnome 3 devs in their infinite wisdom decided that a fixed delay is best ignoring a horde of users complaining about this decision.
Re: [Trisquel-users] On screen notifications
That's pretty much what I expected to hear. I had a mooch about in System Settings, couldn't see anything related and thought I bet this has been stripped out completely. I really like Trisquel 7, but I hate Gnome will all my heart. So, time to find an alternative DE.
Re: [Trisquel-users] On screen notifications
So, time to find an alternative DE. Except - MATE is, well, MATE, Cinnamon appears to be on its way out, XFCE won't install, KDE is KDE (nothing wrong with it, but I sort of prefer all the other DE's), enlightenment is a bit too quirky and WM is ancient. So, the default Trisquel 7 desktop it is and I'll just have to put up with the idiotic Gnome design decisions.
Re: [Trisquel-users] On screen notifications
If you can't install XFCE, have you tried using a lightweight WM (like Fluxbox!) with XFCE settings running in the background? You can manually install xfce4-notifyd and use xfce4-notifyd-config to set the duration of your notifications.
[Trisquel-users] Munich gives up on GNU/Linux and free/open source software
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2014/08/munich-city-linux-switching-back-windows Its a shame because I feel that they are giving up and this will fall on the backs of the tax payers. This is also why its essential to get younger people educated about free and open source software at an early age and understand it so when they enter the workforce, they won't be confused.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I want the default Trisquel 6 font back.
Isn't the default Droid Sans?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Munich gives up on GNU/Linux and free/open source software
Let's not spread the FUD, shall we? The actual headline of the article is Is Munich City About to Switch Back to Windows from Linux?, despite the clickbait URL. And looks like the source for this rumor is Neowin, a Microsoft news web site. This is exactly the kind of level of journalism one can expect from a blog titled omgubuntu. Of course proprietary software will not interoperate and of course this will mean trouble for the users. However the sensible solution hardly is to use more proprietary software.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Munich gives up on GNU/Linux and free/open source software
I think the real reason is that people are so hung up on Microsoft Office and used to the interface and the tools. Other than that, they can use the same web browsers (Chrome, Chromium, Firefox) and have the ability to open and save PDF files on the majority of GNU/Linux distros. LibreOffice, if it had an interface that wasn't straight out of 1997, probably would have been better received. The look of that office suite has been an issue for a long time and all we got were some graphical mockups from a few years ago with nothing actually happening. I use it because its free, but to the average consumer, it looks amateur and horribly dated. I know you guys hate to hear this, but if they used an interface that was friendly to Windows (Cinnamon or MATE) and/or Mac (Elementary OS), then it would have been better. Heck, even using Ubuntu with Unity would have been an improvement. I had never heard of the OS they used for the deployment and it was probably not the best option to go with something that wasn't Ubuntu or at least Ubuntu based. What the hell is LiMux?
Re: [Trisquel-users] I want the default Trisquel 6 font back.
Yeah, and by default Sans Serif is Droid Sans.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Triskel 7 issues with Abrowser
Install IceCat instead. The gtk2-engines-oxygen theme in 7.0 works with IceCat but not Abrowser.

t3g said: I had never heard of the OS they used for the deployment and it was probably not the best option to go with something that wasn't Ubuntu or at least Ubuntu based. What the hell is LiMux? From Wikipedia: LiMux is a project by the city of Munich to migrate their software systems from closed-source, proprietary Microsoft products to free and open source software LiMux is also the name of the Linux distribution being used for the project It was first based on Debian, but later changed to Ubuntu [V]ersion 4.1 available from August 2012 is... based on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Munich gives up on GNU/Linux and free/open source software
I first heard about this from this post: http://arstechnica.com/business/2014/08/linux-on-the-desktop-pioneer-munich-now-considering-a-switch-back-to-windows/ It includes the following quote: [Josef Schmid's] views aren't held universally, with the City Council defending the 'LiMux' project and suggesting that the coalition administration is using the Linux migration as a scapegoat. The Council says the use of open source software has yielded savings of more than €10 million (more than $13 million). Karl-Heinz Schneider, head of municipal IT services, seems to endorse this view. He says it's no surprise that a new platform should temporarily generate more support requests, and he wasn't aware of any particular complaints.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7: What'd the release schedule and where's the beta?
Thanks! Somehow, the link wasn't obvious for me? What is the state of the development and when can we expect the final release? I guess there's no schedule?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Munich gives up on GNU/Linux and free/open source software
I think this comment pretty much sums up that Microsoft may have a hand in this: Microsoft, whose German HQ relocates to Munich in 2016, say they are 'ready to talk' if and when things change.
[Trisquel-users] I want to share this interview with RMS
Hi all: I just wanted to share this video I found on youtube: Richard Stallman: We're heading for a total disaster http://youtu.be/uFMMXRoSxnA It's an interview with RMS and I really like it a lot, but I'm sure there is thousands of good interviews out there. I really feel like RMS was very eloquent in that specific interview, I mean, I'm sure that it is something he has been working for so long, but it makes me wonder, what will happen once he is all gone? I mean I'm sure there is really good speakers out there when it comes to free software and maybe I just don't know their names, and the future of free software can not stand in the hands of one person, but I feel than losing him will be a great lost. I feel he is one of the main people that has keep us in the right track, but maybe I'm wrong. Still, freedom is never easy, and we will have to keep strong and work hard even if he is around or not. I feel like I have asked this question before but if some one could suggest a few other speakers I'll like to look for them and heard them. Thank you.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Munich gives up on GNU/Linux and free/open source software
Microsoft, whose German HQ relocates to Munich in 2016, say they are 'ready to talk' if and when things change. I think it pretty much explains the whole situation. Sad to say, but given Microsoft's previous tactics I don't give Linux much of a chance in Munich in the long term. It would be a fantastic victory for Microsoft for them to win the city back and they'll make much of it if they do and a perpetual thorn in their sides to have the city their German HQ is in not using Windows. That said, there are plenty of other examples of Linux being used elsewhere in Europe, Munich is just another city and anyone with a brain will spot the Microsoft connection to any pressure they might be under. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_adopters
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7: What'd the release schedule and where's the beta?
But for lack of resuming from Suspend and the occasional hung boot, it's running nicely for me.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Munich gives up on GNU/Linux and free/open source software
Why did they decide to make their own distro?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Munich gives up on GNU/Linux and free/open source software
I don't know, but it's not like they built it entirely from scratch, and other government projects to migrate to GNU/Linux have done the same thing.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Munich gives up on GNU/Linux and free/open source software
Just look at the interface. It uses KDE 3.5. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LiMux
[Trisquel-users] all-in-one computer options
My son really likes to use the computers at the local library and I've been looking to replace my mac mini which runs Xubuntu (I'm not sure Trisquel would have the necessary drivers). I believe an all-in-one would be a good fit here at home but I'm having trouble identifying one that might be friendly to Free Software. The ones at his library appear to be ASUS machines running AWE (http://www.awelearning.com/). I believe AWE might be a GNU/Linux variant because it has applications like tuxpaint installed, which my son immediately recognized from home. I like ASUS gear but their line of machines is quite confusing. It appears as if System76 has a good all-in-one, but it may be a little out of my price range. Is anyone running Trisquel on an all-in-one? Are there any known to be Free Software friendly? I'm off to comb h-node for the time being. Thanks!
Re: [Trisquel-users] all-in-one computer options
I'm not sure about the System 76 machines, they are probably your closest bet at this point (Closed Bios/Firmware) but as you said the cost is a real issue. I will look around however. Side note : That Mac Mini should work fine so long as you don't need Wifi. Trisquel supports Mac hardware incredibly well including the camera on the Laptops. That said I am stuck on a Macbook fo the mean while because of costs and as far as non-free firmware goes it would have to be one of the worst offenders out there.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Munich gives up on GNU/Linux and free/open source software
Having worked in places like this, I get the feeling that some of the reasons why the users complain can be extremely shallow, 'Doesn't run iTunes but I don't want to tell the Boss that' kind of things. Only anecdotal evidence here but it is a factor.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I want to share this interview with RMS
Oh yeah that is one of his great interviews, he is one of those people that you can bring up any subject and he will have a definite opinion on it even if that is just to say I don't know - it is better than making something up. Also yes Freedom is not easy, it is very hard to obtain and maintain. In fact I'm currently writing an Essay on this topic at the very moment, essentially the reason we need Free software (the typical stuff - the intro), how I personally came to believe it is right thing to do and the third and biggest part the difficulties of sticking to it and the temptations of the old ways. Even when he is not around there will always be others to carry the torch. For instance here is a talk from Bradley M Kuhn's on the GNU audio/video page (http://audio-video.gnu.org/audio/bradley-m-kuhn-software-freedom-and-the-gnu-generation-07-2002.ogg). This really put a nice new perspective on the same free software issues. There will always be others.
Re: [Trisquel-users] all-in-one computer options
I'll have to sit down and try to get Trisquel installed some evening, then. I don't currently use the wifi with the mini, so that's good to know. What about graphics issues? Does that sort of thing work out of the box?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Munich gives up on GNU/Linux and free/open source software
Yeah. What of it?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Munich gives up on GNU/Linux and free/open source software
It looks really ugly, I don't think anyone would like to use such an interface.
Re: [Trisquel-users] all-in-one computer options
Depends on what kind of GPU you have. Intel integrated graphics (e.g. Intel GMA and Intel HD) work perfectly. Intel actually provides free/libre drivers for these. Nvidia cards are hit-and-miss, since their free/libre software support depends on reverse-engineering. Many of them work really well, and some of them only partly work (e.g. missing 3-D support). Upgrading the kernel to get a newer version of Nouveau can sometimes help if you have problems. AMD/ATI graphics are the worst. They generally work, but only in 2-D; 3-D requires a proprietary firmware blob. These GPUs should be avoided the most.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Munich gives up on GNU/Linux and free/open source software
Sure. I think it's ugly, too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I want to share this interview with RMS
The loss of RMS would be sad indeed. Another great speaker is Eben Moglen. Here's one of his talks: http://www.softwarefreedom.org/news/2010/feb/08/audio-and-video-eben-moglens-talk-freedom-cloud-no/ There are tons more all over the internet such as: http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Author:Eben_Moglen This one is probably one of my favorites. I love how he tells Tim O'Reilly off: http://cachefly.oreilly.com/radar/oscon2007/OSCON_2007_Eben_Moglen.ogg
Re: [Trisquel-users] Munich gives up on GNU/Linux and free/open source software
It is characterless but functional, essentially what a government needs. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] all-in-one computer options
Based off the Macbook, the video drivers work perfectly fine for the Intel systems. In relation to Nvidia, I have found that T7 works better than T6 simply due to more current Nouveau drivers. As for the Wifi, Broadcom seem to be very low (if ever) at releasing Free drivers so an external USB adaptor is usually required - like the ones from ThinkPenguin or Tehnoetic are a great choice.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Munich gives up on GNU/Linux and free/open source software
I get the feeling that some of the reasons why the users complain can be extremely shallow Yup, I can attest to that. And some will simply refuse to cooperate - they will not try, they will not learn, they will make up problems and whine to the wrong people, deliberately, they will do things wrong then claim they did them right but this stupid software breaks everything, they will bring in devices they weren't allowed to bring in when they used Windows, etc, etc, etc. Anything so they can get Windows back. I never cease to be amazed over the psychological reactions people display when you take Windows off them or even suggest they try something else. Panic, unreasonable behaviour, loss of higher brain functions, displays of helplessness - from grown ups (remember when there used to be grown ups in the world? Now it seems there are mostly just badly behaved, stupid children masquerading as adults).
