Today I had the same problem. I resolved it in the following manner:

First install;

sudo apt-get install xul-ext-torproxy tor

Then, you need to download the necessary debs from here (lang and arch):

http://devel.trisquel.info/icecat/belenos/pool/main/i/icecat/

and install it (one by one) using dpkg. First icecat, example:

sudo dpkg -i icecat_31.0+gnu3_amd64.deb

Likewise for the language pack (If this is the case). After (If you have
added the ppa):

sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Re: [Trisquel-users] Learning self-defense

2014-08-29 Thread onpon4
You don't need to be a hacker to defend yourself from surveillance. You just
need to change some of your practices.

For protecting your anonymity when browsing the Web, the best tool is Tor,
and the easiest way to get that working properly is to use the Tor Browser
Bundle. To use Tor with software other than Web browsers (such as an email
client or a feed reader), you will want Tails. If you use Tor correctly, no
one will be able to find out who you are.

To prevent parties other than intended recipients from listening in on what
you're saying, you want to use end-to-end encryption. This one requires
cooperation with whoever you're communicating with, but it's not difficult.
What type of encryption you use depends on the communication, but for
encrypting emails, the best tool is GnuPG. See:

https://emailselfdefense.fsf.org

GnuPG is also what you would likely use to encrypt files before entrusting
them to someone else's server e.g. as a backup.

[Trisquel-users] Free software friendly Gamepads

2014-08-29 Thread franparpe

I would like to buy a gamepad for emulators like rpcsx. Of course, I want it
to be the most free software friendly as possible.

Could you help me?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Free software friendly Gamepads

2014-08-29 Thread onpon4
Most are fine. What you mainly need to watch out for is compatibility with
Linux. The Linux Joystick Driver works with XInput (the non-standard API used
by Xbox 360 controllers), and any USB HID class controllers will of course
work (it's a USB standard).

The only source of incompatibility I have come across (though there may be
more obscure ones I don't know about) is DirectInput, a non-standard API used
by DirectX. Controllers that send DirectInput data can't be recognized by the
Linux Joystick Driver. The biggest offender I have come across when it comes
to using DirectInput is Logitech, though I think most of their recent
controllers have an option for XInput. However, I'm sure there are other
controllers that send DirectInput data.

If a controller is said to work with Linux, or advertises being a standard
USB HID, you can get it without worries (other than the quality of the
controller, of course).

If Linux is not mentioned, you might be able to find other clues in user
reviews. For example, USB HID is a standard supported by all operating
systems, so if someone mentions not being able to use the controller on a
Mac, you can be pretty sure it won't work on GNU/Linux either. If you are
unable to pinpoint for sure whether something is compatible with Linux, make
sure you buy from someone who will accept a return for a refund if the
controller is of no use to you.

I recommend avoiding Logitech controllers; Logitech has absurdly terrible
customer support, and both of the Logitech controllers I've had in the past
broke in a weird way after a couple years (they stopped holding a
connection).

Other than that, I'll comment on some controllers I've used (including some
comments about quality):

- Gravis Gamepad Pro (USB version): Standard USB HID. D-pad is a little
mushy, but pretty decent, and the buttons are perfect. You would have to get
it used (it hasn't been manufactured in over 10 years), but they seem to have
held up well.

- PS3 Sixaxis or DualShock 3: Standard USB HID, with the minor problem that
the button and axis configurations are absurd. The tilt sensors work, though
this is actually kind of annoying when configuring controls. Rumble feature
on the DualShock 3 is non-standard, so it doesn't work. Most buttons are also
axes, which is a little annoying, but usually doesn't seem to cause problems.
D-pad is excellent, analog sticks are decent, and buttons are perfect, but
the trigger buttons are pretty crappy.

- Snakebyte Final Fantasy XIV controller: Standard USB HID. Rumble feature is
non-standard, so it doesn't work. As far as I know, the Function button
also doesn't work. D-pad is not very good, but analog sticks and buttons are
perfect.

- Logitech controllers: I've had two of these; one used only DirectInput, and
therefore didn't work with Linux, and one used either DirectInput or XInput
(controlled by a switch). Both of them were in general good controllers, but
they both stopped consistently holding a connection after a couple years. I
recommend staying away from Logitech controllers because of this experience.

- SNES controllers: The Mayflash SNES Controller Adapter is a standard USB
HID, and works perfectly. The Gtron adapter is also a standard USB HID, but
seems to be much lower quality, so I don't recommend it. I can't vouch for
any other similar adapters, since I have only used these two. One thing to
note, some SNES controllers made by Nintendo just don't seem to work with
these adapters, for some reason. This seems to be the fault of the
controllers, not the adapters.

MB, having the text would be way more useful than the PDF pages! Thanks for
recommending pdftotext and the -layout option.

I have some questions -- could you help me break this process down into
smaller steps?

I looked up pdfjam's split command online -- I think that it may be a little
time consuming (my PDFs are a few thousand pages long):

http://0x2a.at/blog/2011/02/pdf_manipulation_on_the_cli/

http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/79623/quickly-extracting-individual-pages-from-a-document

I looked at PDF Shuffler (the GUI one) and that can only split files
one-by-one. Are there other options?

Once I split the files into single pages, I'll need the Shell command 'for
file in pages/* loop. I don't understand what this step will do. Could you
please explain this step too?

About this step: 'if pdftotex $file - | grep -i regexps' -- does this copy
all the PDF text to one text file? And then search (grep) the text file?
Does this command take text from many single PDfs? Or only after the hit
pages are joined up into one document?

What does it mean to append the file to a Shell variable ? What is the
goal in this step? Could you please explain how I can do this step too?

Re: [Trisquel-users] finding particular pages within PDFs

2014-08-29 Thread legimet . calc
for file in pages/* is a for loop. That means that it will execute the body
of the loop for each file in the directory pages/*, setting the variable file
to the filename each time.

'if pdftotext $file - | grep -i regexps': the 'pdftotext $file -' part
outputs the text of the pdf to standard output. However, this is piped to
grep. When you pipe it, the standard output of the first command becomes
standard input of the second command. So the file will be searched for your
regexp, and the if will check if there were any matches.

You can append the filename to a variable using something like '$foo=$foo
$file'

I'm sorry, but I believe that must not be correct. According to
https://tails.boum.org/doc/about/license/index.en.html
all their software is free software, and IIRC they even got rid of TrueCrypt
some time ago (because of the issues with it).
Also, since this is based on Debian main distro, I believe there would be no
blobs (since Debian removes those from the kernel). I might be wrong in this
one, maybe TAILS puts them back in, but I don't see any indication of that
anywhere (please provide a source if you can).
With all this in mind, I would consider TAILS as a free distro (at least as
free as Debian itself, which is another debate) and the BEST tool to use in
terms of OpSec. Actually, it is a good example to follow if you want to learn
self-defense. For example, some of the software they use (MAT, KeePassX, etc)
are available in the repositories and you should use them! :)

I am right now in the process of trying to convert Debian (native Debian, not
any rebranded distro) into a more secure and privacy oriented system. I have
decided that using Tor is not enough, so I started by taking a look at TAILS
and Whonix to get some ideas. I have also started to work with grsecurity and
AppArmor for improved security. the mempo project is also a good place to get
some ideas. All in all, there are many little things you can and should do to
improve your security online, without having to become a cracker (you have to
be a hacker however to do this kind of thing, which means you have to think
creatively and try to come up with new fun ways of doing things). There are
also some good talks from GNU hackers meetings, Defcon and HOPE talks, that
you could watch to learn the basics. I could provide some links if you want
:)

2014-08-29 Thread a1716479
Ok, so. Icecat is successfully installed! Thank you everyone who helped.
I truly haven’t encountered such a helpful Linux community before, not to
diss anyone, but you guys have been much more helpful.

Following your advice I:
~$ sudo apt-get install xul-ext-torproxy tor
[sudo] password for localhost5:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package xul-ext-torproxy is not available, but is referred to by another
package.

This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'xul-ext-torproxy' has no installation candidate

Ok so I downloaded it like Legimet said, and:

~$ sudo dpkg -i
/home/localhost5/Downloads/Icecat-31.0/xul-ext-torproxy_2.3_all.deb

Selecting previously unselected package xul-ext-torproxy.
(Reading database ... 242178 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking xul-ext-torproxy (from .../xul-ext-torproxy_2.3_all.deb) ...
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of xul-ext-torproxy:
 xul-ext-torproxy depends on tor; however:
  Package tor is not installed.
dpkg: error processing xul-ext-torproxy (--install):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Errors were encountered while processing:
 xul-ext-torproxy

Ok, so...

sudo synaptic

“You have one broken package. Please...blablabla”

So I fixed that, then used synaptic to install it, and that worked.

I then downloaded, and tried installing the Icecat packages with sudo dpkg -i
(starting with icecat_31.0+gnu3_amd64.deb) again.

(Reading database ... 243492 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace icecat 31.0+gnu3 (using .../icecat_31.0+gnu3_amd64.deb)
...

Unpacking replacement icecat ...
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of icecat:
 icecat depends on libc6 (= 2.17); however:
Version of libc6 on system is 2.15-0ubuntu10.7.
 icecat depends on libfontconfig1 (= 2.9.0); however:
Version of libfontconfig1 on system is 2.8.0-3ubuntu9.1.
 icecat depends on libglib2.0-0 (= 2.37.3); however:
Version of libglib2.0-0 on system is 2.32.4-0ubuntu1.
 icecat depends on libpango-1.0-0 (= 1.22.0); however:
  Package libpango-1.0-0 is not installed.
 icecat depends on libpangocairo-1.0-0 (= 1.14.0); however:
  Package libpangocairo-1.0-0 is not installed.
dpkg: error processing icecat (--install):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Processing triggers for desktop-file-utils ...
Processing triggers for man-db ...
Errors were encountered while processing:
 icecat

eh...

Then software center opened, (this sometimes happens when I install debs)
and displayed the message below. So I let it run it’s fix, then looked for
Icecat in software center, and found it, so I ran the install. Well that did
it. “shrugs”

Anyway I couldn’t have done it without your help. Thank you so much.

Interesting that TAILS won an FSF award despite the fact that it includes
proprietary firmware - i.e., it's not free.

It actually is pretty fast: a little bit more than 10s for the example above
that processes 24 documents (341 pages in total) and generates a 62-page PDF.

As you can see, I decided to name the output with the basename of the last
matching PDF followed by -matches.pdf. I initially wanted to concatenate
the names of all matching PDFs but you may then reach the size limit for file
names!

I do not know if you really wanted regular expressions (instead of simple
strings). Maybe you wanted whole-word matches and/or to ignore the case.
Those things are simple options to add to the 'grep' command.

Precisely - Too many apply the logic that 'It is a variant of the Debian
GNU/Linux distro so it *must* be equally free.' This is not a good place to
start from and results in people reaching the wrong conclusion.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the link goes to a forum where someone asks
if TAILS is Free Software and whether it can apply as a candidate for
Award for Projects of Social Benefit by the FSF.

Do you have the link where TAILS won the award?
