I resolved it in the following manner: First install; sudo apt-get install xul-ext-torproxy tor Then, you need to download the necessary debs from here (lang and arch): http://devel.trisquel.info/icecat/belenos/pool/main/i/icecat/ and install it (one by one) using dpkg. First icecat, example: sudo dpkg -i icecat_31.0+gnu3_amd64.deb Likewise for the language pack (If this is the case). After (If you have added the ppa): sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

You don't need to be a hacker to defend yourself from surveillance. You just need to change some of your practices. For protecting your anonymity when browsing the Web, the best tool is Tor, and the easiest way to get that working properly is to use the Tor Browser Bundle. To use Tor with software other than Web browsers (such as an email client or a feed reader), you will want Tails. If you use Tor correctly, no one will be able to find out who you are. To prevent parties other than intended recipients from listening in on what you're saying, you want to use end-to-end encryption. This one requires cooperation with whoever you're communicating with, but it's not difficult. What type of encryption you use depends on the communication, but for encrypting emails, the best tool is GnuPG. See: https://emailselfdefense.fsf.org GnuPG is also what you would likely use to encrypt files before entrusting them to someone else's server e.g. as a backup.

Most are fine. What you mainly need to watch out for is compatibility with Linux. The Linux Joystick Driver works with XInput (the non-standard API used by Xbox 360 controllers), and any USB HID class controllers will of course work (it's a USB standard). The only source of incompatibility I have come across (though there may be more obscure ones I don't know about) is DirectInput, a non-standard API used by DirectX. Controllers that send DirectInput data can't be recognized by the Linux Joystick Driver. The biggest offender I have come across when it comes to using DirectInput is Logitech, though I think most of their recent controllers have an option for XInput. However, I'm sure there are other controllers that send DirectInput data. If a controller is said to work with Linux, or advertises being a standard USB HID, you can get it without worries (other than the quality of the controller, of course). If Linux is not mentioned, you might be able to find other clues in user reviews. For example, USB HID is a standard supported by all operating systems, so if someone mentions not being able to use the controller on a Mac, you can be pretty sure it won't work on GNU/Linux either. If you are unable to pinpoint for sure whether something is compatible with Linux, make sure you buy from someone who will accept a return for a refund if the controller is of no use to you. I recommend avoiding Logitech controllers; Logitech has absurdly terrible customer support, and both of the Logitech controllers I've had in the past broke in a weird way after a couple years (they stopped holding a connection). Other than that, I'll comment on some controllers I've used (including some comments about quality): - Gravis Gamepad Pro (USB version): Standard USB HID. D-pad is a little mushy, but pretty decent, and the buttons are perfect. You would have to get it used (it hasn't been manufactured in over 10 years), but they seem to have held up well. - PS3 Sixaxis or DualShock 3: Standard USB HID, with the minor problem that the button and axis configurations are absurd. The tilt sensors work, though this is actually kind of annoying when configuring controls. Rumble feature on the DualShock 3 is non-standard, so it doesn't work. Most buttons are also axes, which is a little annoying, but usually doesn't seem to cause problems. D-pad is excellent, analog sticks are decent, and buttons are perfect, but the trigger buttons are pretty crappy. - Snakebyte Final Fantasy XIV controller: Standard USB HID. Rumble feature is non-standard, so it doesn't work. As far as I know, the Function button also doesn't work. D-pad is not very good, but analog sticks and buttons are perfect. - Logitech controllers: I've had two of these; one used only DirectInput, and therefore didn't work with Linux, and one used either DirectInput or XInput (controlled by a switch). Both of them were in general good controllers, but they both stopped consistently holding a connection after a couple years. I recommend staying away from Logitech controllers because of this experience. - SNES controllers: The Mayflash SNES Controller Adapter is a standard USB HID, and works perfectly. The Gtron adapter is also a standard USB HID, but seems to be much lower quality, so I don't recommend it. I can't vouch for any other similar adapters, since I have only used these two. One thing to note, some SNES controllers made by Nintendo just don't seem to work with these adapters, for some reason. This seems to be the fault of the controllers, not the adapters.

Now with trisquel I'm not able to see streaming video on vidto, freedrive, ecc... I tried with VLC, UnPlug add-ons for firefox and also with Gnash dosn't work. Could anyone help me? Meanwhile, get the deb package from http://devel.trisquel.info/icecat/toutatis/pool/main/x/xul-ext-torproxy/ and install it. Also, if you want the KDE integration (which I assume you do since you're installing from my ppa), install the package icecat-kde-support.

With Vidto, I didn't have any luck with any of the methods I tried. One more possibility, which I can't try because I don't have Lightspark installed, is to use the Flash Video Downloader extension while Lightspark is playing the Flash object. Lightspark might also be able to play the videos directly. With FreeDrive, I wasn't even able to navigate the site, so I don't have an answer. If they can't be made to work with libre software, you should contact the server owners and ask them to fix the problem, and in the meantime watch videos somewhere else.

I have some questions -- could you help me break this process down into smaller steps? Could you please explain this step too? About this step: 'if pdftotex $file - | grep -i regexps' -- does this copy all the PDF text to one text file? And then search (grep) the text file? Does this command take text from many single PDfs? Or only after the hit pages are joined up into one document? What does it mean to append the file to a Shell variable ? What is the goal in this step? Could you please explain how I can do this step too?

for file in pages/* is a for loop. That means that it will execute the body of the loop for each file in the directory pages/*, setting the variable file to the filename each time. 'if pdftotext $file - | grep -i regexps': the 'pdftotext $file -' part outputs the text of the pdf to standard output. However, this is piped to grep. When you pipe it, the standard output of the first command becomes standard input of the second command. So the file will be searched for your regexp, and the if will check if there were any matches. You can append the filename to a variable using something like '$foo=$foo $file'

I'm sorry, but I believe that must not be correct. According to https://tails.boum.org/doc/about/license/index.en.html all their software is free software, and IIRC they even got rid of TrueCrypt some time ago (because of the issues with it). Also, since this is based on Debian main distro, I believe there would be no blobs (since Debian removes those from the kernel). I might be wrong in this one, maybe TAILS puts them back in, but I don't see any indication of that anywhere (please provide a source if you can). With all this in mind, I would consider TAILS as a free distro (at least as free as Debian itself, which is another debate) and the BEST tool to use in terms of OpSec. Actually, it is a good example to follow if you want to learn self-defense. For example, some of the software they use (MAT, KeePassX, etc) are available in the repositories and you should use them! :) I am right now in the process of trying to convert Debian (native Debian, not any rebranded distro) into a more secure and privacy oriented system. I have decided that using Tor is not enough, so I started by taking a look at TAILS and Whonix to get some ideas. I have also started to work with grsecurity and AppArmor for improved security. the mempo project is also a good place to get some ideas. All in all, there are many little things you can and should do to improve your security online, without having to become a cracker (you have to be a hacker however to do this kind of thing, which means you have to think creatively and try to come up with new fun ways of doing things). There are also some good talks from GNU hackers meetings, Defcon and HOPE talks, that you could watch to learn the basics. I could provide some links if you want :)

Whenever I boot up my laptop which has Trisquel installed, it logs in automatically to my account without asking for my password. I have the settings set to ask for a password on log in so I'm confused why this happens. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I asked on their IRC a while back and was told that proprietary firmware is shipped by default so that Tails will work on more hardware. I don't have any link to share though, sorry! Andrew.

As you can see, I decided to name the output with the basename of the last matching PDF followed by -matches.pdf. I initially wanted to concatenate the names of all matching PDFs but you may then reach the size limit for file names! I do not know if you really wanted regular expressions (instead of simple strings). Maybe you wanted whole-word matches and/or to ignore the case. Those things are simple options to add to the 'grep' command.

Precisely - Too many apply the logic that 'It is a variant of the Debian GNU/Linux distro so it *must* be equally free.' This is not a good place to start from and results in people reaching the wrong conclusion.
