It seems to be a trademark, but many companies just use unoffial vendor IDs. However if you do not include the trademarked logo then there is need for a licence. There may be some patents, but those seem not to affect software implementations of USB devices.

I think the best way is to upgrade to Trisquel 7 (once it's ready, or if you are brave enough) and add a PPA (GNOME testing/staging PPA, etc.). Using PPA is risky because it may contain proprietary sotware and unstable software. If you want to use it anyway, I strongly recommend you to install also the ppa-purge tool.

This is how I installed Gnome 3.12.2 on Trisquel 7 20140807 testing version. It have not been running for over one month. If this will work at Trisquel 6.0.1 I do not know. [Trisquel-users] cant use my devices in loginscreen
Hello, I am new to linux and i was getting trisquel to work, but somehow after installing some updates i wasnt able to login anymore. The clock was still working but i coudnt use my keyboard or mouse. I installed it for testing only in /. I might believe it is connected with the nouveau driver. I am having 2 nvidia geforce gtx 260m and i needed to restart my computer 2 times, because the screen was in a really strange white colours (looked like everything was in the colour scale on the opposite side). Would be a shame i am forced to use debian cause of the graphic cards or driver. Enable the integrated intel card doesnt worked either. Also I have somekind of a keyboard issue. After cleaning up my Laptop inside i have got destroyed the connection to the mousepad and after that my keyboard was only properly working when i restarted or put my computer to sleep.

Yes, I know you both pointed out to the fix but what I'm saying is that it still sounds complicated...unless someone can explain the fix to me in an easier way.

Very interesting thread! I agree with you that there are problems with Trisquel security. However, I think there are no reasons to beat a half-dead horse : Trisquel 6 would be outdated very soon. I believe, it would be time to start work on ARM version when ARMv8 64-bit boards will be released and become popular. We are going to see some ARMv8 Cortex-A57 netbooks in near time - I hope ;)

Trisquel 6 is based on Ubuntu 12.04 which will be supported until 2017. I don't think Trisquel 6 is going to be outdated anytime soon.

There's this on line form I could fill up to suggest books to our uni library. The books can be about anything or any implementation such as hacking as long as it's Free Software, I guess that's good?

If you want the latest GNOME, your best bet is probably Parabola. Do keep in mind, though, that Parabola is a very bleeding-edge distro, and it's said that the bleeding-edge is soaked with the blood of its users, or something like that.

[Trisquel-users] Recording audio from my desktop
I want to record whatever audio my computer is playing, and not by microphone. Tried VLC. Was too complicated. Probably wouldn't have worked anyway. Discovered there's an included application for this purpose, gnome-sound-recorder. It was junk. The World Wide Web agrees that it's junk. It did nothing. Installed recordmydesktop and its GUI. Recorded video, but not audio. Discovered that most tutorials said to change the input sound source in the Recording tab of Pavucontrol to Monitor Of. Did. Didn't work. Discovered that you have to change Default to Pulse in the advanced options menu of recordmydesktop. Did so. STILL DIDN'T FREAKING WORK. How in the name of your favourite deity am I supposed to record audio under Trisquel?

I've just upgraded to Trisquel 7 (Loving it so much~!) and am installing via that PPA now. That PPA won't work with Trisquel 6, as it doesn't have any packages for 12.04. Thanks!
[Trisquel-users] Keyboard Lag in Trisquel 7...?
Sorry for two questions in two days! There seems to be keyboard lag in T7- every once in a while when I'm typing, there will be a few second lag between my keypresses and the characters displaying on the screen. My screen isn't freezing- I can still interact with windows during this lag...

Problem solved- thanks to a post over at the forums of a non-free distro of which Parabola is based. (I won't link, sorry.) Solution to keyboard lag (And, perhaps, mouse lag!): Add the following section to /etc/X11/xorg.conf SectionServerFlags Option AutoAddDevices true Option AllowEmptyInput no EndSection
