I'm using gnome-shell but I am installing unity just to see if I can. I find no reason not to be able to do so. I believe we can even install unity- 8 with mir.

Are you a Filipino?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Where can I find list of pre-installed packages for released version?
OK. This is exactly what I'm looking for.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Where can I find list of pre-installed packages for released version?
BTW I recently found following information (see quoted text) from http://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html: In addition to their own sites, many of these distributions are available from mirror.fsf.org. Feel free to download or mirror the distributions from there, preferably using rsync. In which http://mirror.fsf.org is helpful for this purpose.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Mounting USB devices
Could you check if autoFS is installed? If it wasn't installed, install it and reboot. If it was installed, please, insert the usb, summon a terminal, and type the following: $ sudo fdisk -l And paste the output in the forums so we can look at it. Then type: $ sudo blkid And paste the output. Let's see if there is a problem with the format.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Mounting USB devices
Interesting, Autofs was installed by default in Ubuntu 12.04... Ok, remove Autofs and do the following: First, get root privileges and type this: # mkdir /media/usb0 then: # nano /etc/fstab Add the following line at the end without removing anything in this file. /dev/sdc1 /media/usb0 autorw,user,noauto,umask=0 0 0 Reboot and tell us if it works. Don't forget to acces the file manager.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why I'm leaving Trisquel
My freedom is not restricted. What is free as FSF wants? My understanding is that I can get software, change it if I like, and re-share it with the world as long as I respect the GNU license. I feel no need to change firmware or drivers. The manufacturers know more about their hardware than any of us do especially in regards to making software to make it work. Open Source distributions are running way ahead of FSF and better software is being created.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Mounting USB devices
After what you said and restart = no better. In addition, I installed usbmount and pmount, restart. Now insert the USB key, it goes well, I see the icon on the desktop. When I want to disassemble, against it by asking for my password, but only the first time. If I restart again when I want to disassemble it requires password.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Mounting USB devices
strange indeed. It will pass a lot of time until I have Trisquel 7 on my laptop so I can find alternative solutions, I will share them with you if I find them. Thank you and sorry

Re: [Trisquel-users] Tp link librecmc wifi router on an isp modem with public address?
The isp router modem has been turned into a modem with a public address. The tp link librecmc is connected and mainly it works. First and shortly I lan cable connected the tp link router and the computer. The connection seemed fast. About wifi it works but it seems that transfer rate vary and in general is lower than via lan cable. Wifi does not disconnect. Lower transfer speed I relate to distance and walls between tp link router and computer. Are there settings I can make to improve data transfer rate? Maybe I can position the tp link router antennas better. The librecmc user interface I mostly do not understand. There is no librecmc manual? I would want to know how to config firewall and set 1. and 2. dns server?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why I'm leaving Trisquel
My freedom is not restricted. What is free as FSF wants? My We're talking about the OED freedom, n. I.1 distinct meaning of freedom - a matter of liberty. So it doesn't need inverted commas. The most common confusion we see here is with the I.9 distinct meaning - lack of encumbrance. You seem to have that confusion. understanding is that I can get software, change it if I like, and re-share it with the world as long as I respect the GNU license. I feel no need to change firmware or drivers. The manufacturers know more about their hardware than any of us do especially in regards to making software to make it work. If you actually knew what goes on in hardware maufacturers you wouldn't be saying that. Hardware manufacturers rarely do a good job with drivers. The reality is usually the best people to write a free software O/S driver are the relevant community, they're the most technically competent at the job. Open Source distributions are running way ahead of FSF and better software is being created. Something like 90% of the code is the same and free distros will run happily on many machines. Admittedly there aren't free software replacements for everything as yet, but there's enough for people motivated by that freedom to more than get by without needing proprietary code.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why I'm leaving Trisquel
We'll just have it agree to disagree. Free hardware drivers, especially those for most modern video cards, usually suck as has been my experience with my AMD Radeon HD 7770 video card as I can only use the GPU for computing with the non-free drivers. If the free driver could do that then great but it cannot so it is not an option for me. Once I backup some data, I am going to install Trisquel 7 onto a laptop to play around with. Ubuntu MATE is my distro of choice as of right now and has yet to let me down.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why I'm leaving Trisquel
The point is that the developer of proprietary software is the only person who knows what's going on when the program gets executed, hence he has control over your computer. When a few company have total control over the technology of millions and millions of people, and if those people manage their whole lives with it, then we're in some serious trouble. And you can't messure freedom by the number of choices you have or the number of things you can do. Somebody can give you choices but demands control over your life in return - that's what proprietary software does. I don't agree with stallman's view on freedom completely but on that one, i agree with him.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why I'm leaving Trisquel
I don't think it follows that because proprietary drivers are better than free drivers (in a shallow sense of practical convenience), hardware manufacturers are therefore more skilled at writing said drivers. In the case of GPUs, Intel only develops free drivers for its integrated graphics controllers, AMD refuses to publish a large part of their GPU specs, and Nvidia refuses to publish any of their GPU specs (although the Nvidia might shift to a position more like AMD in the near future, from what I've heard). It seems obvious to me that AMD's and Nvidia's proprietary drivers work more effectively because developers of free drivers for these GPUs have almost nothing to work with. If anything, the amount of progress Nouveau has made with absolutely no help at all from the manufacturer is a testament to our community's ability to take care of the software portion of these devices ourselves.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Tp link librecmc wifi router on an isp modem with public address?
Mine hasn't arrived yet so I can only give generic advice which is: 'For more WiFi speed set it to 40MHz mode, that does 300Mbp/s. Usually with routers (and upstream) the firewall is already configured.' For other stuff try asking on IRC channel #librecmc at irc.freenode.net. Or consult the upstream docs at https://openwrt.org/ as at this stage I would guess LibreCMC still uses uci (command line) and LuCI (web) for router config. OR maybe someone who actually has one will chip in - Anyone? Leny

Yeah, I don't see Unity in the lightdm login either. I even GDM and Unity did not show up there either. What seems to be the issue preventing this in Trisquel?

yes In this day I put a suggestion on the Parabola mailing list
[Trisquel-users] Linux Luddites Ep 28
Comprehensive podcast-based review of Trisquel 7. These guys are definitely not libre purists. While they praise the distro on certain scores, the main utitlity of the review is in seeing how smart people from the outside view what Trisquel is trying to accomplish. Re: [Trisquel-users] Pro/Con thinking of getting the TPE-NWIFIROUTER
1. There is literally no stock left of the revision of the TP-Link router in any significant quantities anywhere. I checked pretty much every source imaginable: China, Europe, and the United States. I didn't check sources who calimed to have less than 10 of the model, nor did I check routers that exceded the price we're selling them at. I also check similar routers with this board, but also ran into the same issue. 2. The Buffalo router your referring the works with LibreWRT is not as free as once thought. LibreWRT is free as LibreCMC, but the bootloader required for booting on the Buffalo router is not free. I'm not the developer and I may from time to time error slightly. However I'm constantly communicating with the lead developer and have a pretty good idea whats going on from the free software aspect. 3. This is a BASIC wireless router. At this point that's all we've been able to do without there potentially being issues. We're still investigating gigabit boards and higher end wireless routers. 4. For the critics I say this. If you don't care about free software or are too obsessed with performance than don't be surprised when your no longer able to tinker with it because digital restrictions were added. Don't be surprised when its revealed the NSA's had a backdoor in all consumer routers from major suppliers. Don't be surprised when data has been 'stolen' you've never even transferred over the internet. 5. One last thing. There will be no 802.11ac router in the near future as it'll require significant effort to get Atheros (or another company designing wireless chipsets) to release enough code/specs to make it happen. We were successful with ath9k-htc (modern USB N chipset) in large part because of two very pro-active free software activists within Atheros. To that I say you can poke someone who is listening, but it's much harder to poke someone who isn't. We've been poking people ever since and it only goes so far if they don't make themselves available to be poked. As it stands those who remain at Atheros have been resistant. I would love for someone to actively participate in the community @ Atheros, but that just isn't happening right now.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Pro/Con thinking of getting the TPE-NWIFIROUTER
While OpenWRT is probably the standard right now there are lots of concerns with that project. They've been hostile to free software related suggestions in the past. A brief description of it technically speaking is: It's a mess. I won't go into any detail, but the lead developer of LibreCMC has wanted to (for years) clean it up. That said this doesn't mean there is some other better project to build off. I can certainly name worse embedded distributions from a technical and freedom perspective. That said both LibreCMC (and LibreWRT) are derived from OpenWRT. The lead developer of LibreCMC stripped out a lot of garbage from OpenWRT. LibreCMC is being actively worked on, there are security issues being fixed, and when an update is released I'd suggest upgrading. The specific security issue is probably not a major issue for most people and it's an issue that probably won't be fixed in most routers. The reason it is not a major issue right now is there is a decent default configuration. The issue basically impacts near all distributions and its not the bash bug recently revealed. For those who are wondering LibreCMC does not include bash. We've been asked that question one too many times...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why I'm leaving Trisquel
What's wrong with Chromium btw? It's made by Google. What else do you need to know? What's the point in using a distro that defaults to DuckDuckGo, on the basis that Google cannot be trusted, if you then install Google's browser? It might not have closed source code in it, though I doubt very much if anyone from the libre software brigade has checked every single line, but we know that Google harvest data and profit from it, without any benefit to anyone else (they probably don't pay any tax on that profit either, they certainly don't pay much tax in the EU/US/UK).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why I'm leaving Trisquel
That's the trouble with plain text, it's hard to impart tone of voice. It was not obvious, at all, that you were being sarcastic, other than by saying I wish I could go back to Windows on a libre software site. The old fake html-style tags can help at such times. [sarcasm] and [/sarcasm]

Re: [Trisquel-users] Why I'm leaving Trisquel
Perhaps it's a mistake to think that the only distros available are ones that are 100% libre from the get go. What about distros which have proprietary stuff in them that is easily removable? Both Fedora (I hear Blag is up and running again) and Slackware have methods to make them 100% libre. I have no experience with Fedora in this regard but the Slackware method is absurdly easy and Slackware is proper Linux. Proper run levels, LILO as boot loader (what a delight LILO is to configure and use), not a shred of systemd in sight, no Gnome foolishness. Linux as it used to be before the muppets got hold of it and began imposing intellectually stunted solutions on it. (Just my rather pointed opinion).
