Oh, OK. Maybe, just maybe, it'd be a little bit better if you wrote what the price is without tax and mark it as being what the price it without tax:)

Well, don't say sorry yet because even after they said that I think they're still so far, a bit more open than Chris' computers! And I wouldn't mind Chris' computers so I think they're still fine.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Automatically Installed JavaScript Must Die
It basically reads like 'look how awefull it is that thousands of programs get installed and executed on our pcs from random sources without our permission As somebody who hasn't quite got the expertise in programming would you please enlighten at least myself as to why it isn't (assuming that's what you're implying with major differences)?

[Trisquel-users] Configure guest-login in Trisquel 7
Hi all. I would like to know how to configure default settings for my guest login in Trisquel 7. There are a couple of things I would like for default (i.e. mouseclick with touchpad, which is disabled in default configuration). Every time I log out of my guest account, all settings are lost, which is the expected behaviour, but I would like to change the default settings of some of them, and I just don't know how to do it. I red somewhere that /etc/guest-user/skel stores default settings for guest users, but I'm afraid is not true for Trisquel. Would apreciate your help. Thx.
[Trisquel-users] Cannot Update Star Catalogues in Stellarium
I've just installed Stellarium, but cannot update the Star Catalogues in the configuration window.Catalogues 1 through 4 come preinstalled. Catalogue 5 will update, apparently, but then will not progress to Catalogue 6. I've tried uninstalling, then reinstalling the program to no avail. Any thoughts out there?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Configure guest-login in Trisquel 7
Try /etc/skel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I love Trisquel 7
I also agree with you. So far I didn't encounter any bugs and it really looks nice. :-)
Re: [Trisquel-users] I love Trisquel 7
I also agree. :) Trisquel 7 is the best release yet!
[Trisquel-users] Start up directory for Trisquel Mini?
Is there one, in order to place there programs that start after login? If not, what's an alternative strategy. Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Start up directory for Trisquel Mini?
Mini uses LXDE which uses Openbox. Put the commands to ~/.config/openbox/autostart
Re: [Trisquel-users] Automatically Installed JavaScript Must Die
That doesn't matter, because JavaScript code can still do malicious things that you don't want it to do, like making an AJAX request to Google Analytics. Even if the JavaScript isn't doing something malicious, there are countless reasons why you would want to change what the code is doing. It doesn't matter that it runs in your browser sandbox, because the JavaScript still has complete control over the web page you're visiting.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Automatically Installed JavaScript Must Die
Yeah, Gitorious works as a place to host git repositories, but it doesn't have most of the features that GitHub provides. It would be nice to see an issue tracker in Gitorious, as well as a web hosting mechanism like onpon4.github.io is using.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Automatically Installed JavaScript Must Die
But Julian's essay is talking about nonfree or proprietary JavaScript code First of all, that's just wrong. Julian is explicitly talking about all javascript out there, free as well as non-free. Librejs aims to wipe out non-free javascript, but that's not enough to his eyes. If i understood correctly, one of his main problems with javascript is that those 'programs' get silently 'installed and executed' from various untrusted sources. But those sandboxed scripts can't really do much so this sounds more dramatical than it actually is. That's my whole point.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Automatically Installed JavaScript Must Die
If all you care about is security, then sure, you can say JavaScript is pretty much fine I think there are too many JS related issues for one to be able to say so. https://www.mozilla.org/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Penguin Wireless N USB Adapter Love it!
OK, because your stuff doesn't come with the end user paperwork for WEEE I hadn't realised we were still paying the taxes for it and the other EU / member state levies and regulations.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Automatically Installed JavaScript Must Die
What I should have said is: his essay talks about the differences of nonfree and free JavaScript, not malicious and non-malicious JavaScript.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Automatically Installed JavaScript Must Die
Well, that is a different issue then. And that's being addressed by the Mozilla team.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Automatically Installed JavaScript Must Die
If i understood correctly, one of his main problems with javascript is that those 'programs' get silently 'installed and executed' from various untrusted sources. You're right, that does seem to be his main concern. In that case, I'd suggest NoScript, or not running JavaScript at all.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Start up directory for Trisquel Mini?
http://wiki.lxde.org/en/Autostart ISTR the system and user based LXSession autostart:s have Trisquel-mini instead of the Lubuntu in the example path there.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Automatically Installed JavaScript Must Die
From Julian's essay: Let's suppose even further that LibreJS succeeds so much that it causes a large portion of the Web to release scripts under libre licenses and document the licenses in a format LibreJS can understand. It seems great on the surface, but what follows from this is that software is still being silently installed into our browsers every day. The only difference is that LibreJS thinks the programs are libre. Right, and this is the only problem that LibreJS aims to solve: http://www.gnu.org/software/librejs/manual/html_node/Disclaimer.html#Disclaimer Maybe a different tool could figure out if the free script has changed since the last time you ran it?

[Trisquel-users] Librem 15: A Free/Libre and Open Source Laptop That Respects Your Essential Freedoms
The Librem 15 will use a Trisquel based operating system. https://www.crowdsupply.com/purism/librem-laptop Sounds pretty good, but I don't know... Haven't seen it mentioned here so I thought I would post something. Do the sponsors of this not hang around here? Strange they mention Trisquel but no post on this.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Automatically Installed JavaScript Must Die
To my mind, for the system of JavaScript to be acceptable, each script installation must be explicitly authorized by the user, unless the user has decided to place trust in someone, and permanent so that you can keep an old version; and it needs to be possible to install other scripts in place of the requested scripts. But I argue that this would be a wasted effort. We can achieve the same result of the users being in control of their own scripts by rejecting the JavaScript requests entirely and using user scripts instead, where it makes sense to. We can even replace proprietary scripts ourselves via user scripts. For example, while it is probably not the intention of the developer, ViewTube works as a libre replacement for YouTube's JavaScript code. One thing that could be helpful is if we could convert typical JavaScript code into user scripts. I don't know whether or not this is possible, though, because I'm not familiar with JavaScript programming, much less the user script API. Could anyone provide some insight?
Re: [Trisquel-users] long-term sustainability of Trisquel -- what if we lose core developers?
Since gedit no longer works with orca, I use mousepad. In the brief tests I've done, Sound Recorder seems to work.

[Trisquel-users] Belenos: Accessible GUI Calendar app?
Hi, I found the Lightning extension from the Mozilla site, and want to add it to icedove; how can I do this? Opening the '.xpi' file with icedove starts an empty message. The xul-ext-lightning package will not install, due to Ubuntu's thunderbird being a dependency. Evolution calendar is not an option; the app is inaccessible with orca. Thanks, -Dave
Re: [Trisquel-users] Belenos: Accessible GUI Calendar app?
Hi Dave, Adding Lightning is very simple! 1) Open IceDove 2) Open the Menu on the top right 3) Select Add-Ons * (Alternatively you can right click on the top of the IceDove window, select Menu Bar and then go to Tools - Add-Ons) 4) Search for Lightning 5) Install and Restart IceDove Best, Lev

[Trisquel-users] is Debian GNU/Hurd free?
It's not on the approved distro list. Is that because it comes with proprietary software, recommends, or facilitates?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librem 15: A Free/Libre and Open Source Laptop That Respects Your Essential Freedoms
I'm pretty sure the graphics are non-free. And why did they fork Trisquel into Purism GNU/Linux? And why aren't they seeking FSF's RYF certification? (Because it would not qualify, which is a good indicator of how free it really is - It automatically fails the RYF criteria due to the proprietary software for the BIOS irrespective of graphics hardware. We have already have machines with free BIOSes and giving the RYF certification to a machine without it seems like a step backward for software freedom.) http://puri.sm/posts/purism-software-freedom-deconstructed/ seems a bit misleading, seems like they're trying to measure freedom and of course you can weigh in a lot of free software on many machines even with proprietary drivers too and make those proprietary things seem like a tiny, insignificant thing when compared against the total number of packages in the distro, just like what they seem to be trying here. Another thing that seems misleading is when they said A boot loader is the first software program that runs when a computer starts right after they just finished talk of another software program that was running before the bootloader. Huh? Ignoring the marketing spin, the level of software freedom provided by the hardware seems to be exactly the same as what you'd get from any other mass market-produced laptop once you install Trisquel on it i.e., all of the hard parts from the hardware are still there (graphics, BIOS, etc.) I don't see this bringing us any closer to having more 100% free laptops and can easily see how it will cause some confusion from people thinking it does while falling short of the previously announced ThinkPads (and some other upcoming devices) that were given the RYF certification. They do talk of trying to get free source code for things which is nice if true... BUT... I can't imagine that they're big enough to make demands on companies like Intel and HDD manufacturers to get Free source code and have it carry any weight. Would be good if it happened though.
Re: [Trisquel-users] is Debian GNU/Hurd free?
The Debian distros can be used in freedom if you're careful. The FSF won't put their name on it though since it's conditional (if you're careful) and because they have issues with what the project behind the distro is doing (distributing proprietary software as a side activity) and they don't seem to see an easy way to draw a line between Debian-the-distro and Debian-the-project-behind-the-distro - See their explanation for Debian at https://gnu.org/distros/common-distros.html See also Optionally Free Is Not Enough (for FSF endorsement) at https://gnu.org/distros/optionally-free-not-enough.html
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librem 15: A Free/Libre and Open Source Laptop That Respects Your Essential Freedoms
I wonder if this is even legit... It isn't obvious who's behind it, and it seems too good to be true. I'd suggest being cautious. I also noticed that section on DVD decryption in their FAQ (http://puri.sm/faq/) seemed kind of familiar. It turns out that a couple of paragraphs from the Enable DVD Playback page were copied from Trisquel's wiki and published with some minor changes. The original wiki page: https://mediacru.sh/b_LFVDVnHU7J (https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/enable-dvd-playback) The DVD section of the FAQ: https://mediacru.sh/eklkwc5tLZxU Everything in Trisquel's wiki is licensed under the GFDL, but Purism has not complied with the license at all. Re: [Trisquel-users] is Debian GNU/Hurd free?
Debian GNU/Hurd isn't a stable and usable for average users yet- it's testing, I believe. That may be why it's not on the list. I find it unlikely that there's any non-free software for Hurd, or that Debian has a non-free repository for Hurd, but it's possible. You should be able to run that Hurd OS in freedom.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librem 15: A Free/Libre and Open Source Laptop That Respects Your Essential Freedoms
Oops! I just read the bottom of the CrowdSupply page, and it says the project was started by a Todd Weaver, so I was mistaken when I said it's not obvious who's behind it. It looks like he is the CEO of a Seattle-based company called Ivi, Inc. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivi%2C_Inc.) @jxself Purism claims the laptop's NVIDIA card fully works with the nouveau driver, and it has a wireless card that works with the ath9k driver.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't upgrade to Trisquel 7.0 :-(
Ok, I installed Trisquel 7.0 and added # in front of the blacklisted drivers. Like you predicted, my computer restarted with a black screen and never started up :-(
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 will be released next week.
Sorry! Quite by accident you happened to hit on a form of words often used by a local minority to open bartering in my youth. I suggest you go here https://www.thinkpenguin.com/about And either get their GPG key or use the contact form to speak to Thinkpenguin direct. Chris has posted here since your last update, so might have already missed it once. Leny
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't upgrade to Trisquel 7.0 :-(
One thing you could further try with radeon unblacklisted is adding the nomodeset grub parameter. You need to edit (as superuser) /etc/default/grub and add nomodeset to the parameters after GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT Then exit and save and run (as superuser) update-grub And reboot.
Re: [Trisquel-users] is Debian GNU/Hurd free?
Sometimes, free software is not enough. Sometimes, you need proprietary software to accompany free software and make it work. Surely a system with mostly free components and a single proprietary component is better than a fully proprietary system. But Mr. Stallman thinks the user should not be told about the option to use the system with only a few non-free components. Not only is this censorship, he is harming his cause.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Automatically Installed JavaScript Must Die
Yeah, your intentions are noble and all, but it's not going to happen. What about dynamically created web pages? Responsive design? Do those not require JavaScript? Yet they are not replaceable by installed software. The web is built on JavaScript, and it is normally used for good and not evil. So, unlike software (and I doubt that free software is ever going to take over), nobody is going to listen to the ramblings of a few radicals.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librem 15: A Free/Libre and Open Source Laptop That Respects Your Essential Freedoms
Purism will prioritize free/libre software for our users. Sounds like it comes with proprietary stuff then... 4 Core (8 Threads) 2.3GHz Intel i7-4712MQ I guess that means it comes with the AMT backdoor. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_AMT
Re: [Trisquel-users] is Debian GNU/Hurd free?
Give proprietary software and inch, and it'll move a mile Even a single proprietary component is a security and privacy risk- certainly, if your computer NEEDS one proprietary component (And you are unable to replace your PC with one that doesn't need any proprietary software) it's better than nothing. With most PCs I've install Trisquel on, though, the only problem is wifi, which can be easily fixed.
Re: [Trisquel-users] is Debian GNU/Hurd free?
Armworm: But Mr. Stallman thinks the user should not be told about the option to use the system with only a few non-free components. Not only is this censorship, he is harming his cause. Firstly, not offering proprietary software to users is not censorship. The idea that the Debian Project could somehow be obliged to provide users with proprietary software is absurd. On the other hand, a system such as those which Apple offers is a system of censorship because users entirely rely on a single repository controlled by Apple for software and cannot modify the system in any way to change this. Secondly, if you recognise that different freedoms can conflict with each other then it's possible to end up in a situation where freedom of speech in providing software to users (e.g. binary packages) might conflict with end users' right to software freedom (see the GNU 'four freedoms' for software). But as per my first point I will reiterate that declining to offer software is not censorship. Andrew
