I am writing about selecting oxygen or qtcurve in kde system settings and after
that, new opened windows of dolphin are using the gtk theme, like mist or
clearlooks or whatever is set with lxappeareance. Basically the kde/qt apps
(dolphin) are using the gtk theme set with lxappearence.

After playing around I noticed that this behavior does not affect other users
exept the one created at install, for 1002 1003 seems fine. Don't know what to
take from this.

You must have in ~ a configuration file that is the cause of your problem.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Review of FSF High Priority Projects list -- your input is needed

2014-12-23 Thread shiretoko
I don't think your proposal is wrong, I just think that it can't solve the
problem.

My proposal is a mixture of
1. your proposal (writing as many userscript replacements as possible)
2. stallman's proposal (trying to convince as many server owners to release
their code as free javascript; i know that you're concerned about the scripts
being executed without the users consent, but this could be solved with an
addon which asks the user for confirmation to run script xy in version wz; he
could agree to run the free scripts of the most visited websites with
somekind of whitelist)
3. live without javascript if point 1 and 2 didn't work out, or make somekind
of workaround (element inspector)

4. make a compromise for the rest (just like we do with non-free bios)

Web-technology evolves quickly and chances might be decent that a new
technology will make javascript disappear... like it happens with flash to
some extent at the moment.

I have to say that I gave it some thought and that i'm not so pessimistic
about your proposal anymore. I mean there exist already a lot of userscripts
and they modify a huge bunch of websites... unfortunately not for freedom's
sake.
Still I think that we need to combine all the means we have right now and
then we need a bit of luck...

I'm glad that it was something I missed and not a bug.

Sure, of course there is much more needed than just replacing Skype to
really free a computer but it would be a tremendous step forward. The problem
of convincing all your friends is a very common one. I had to deal with it
many times before because usually the majority of people goes with the most
convenient solution and not with the one providoing the most freedom.
Furthermore, I agree that installing coreboot is non-trivial but this is
where smart business people could jump in by providing pre-installed and
pre-configured motherboards.

Few things you could try is another

*Linux-libre kernel, e.g. a binary from http://www.jxself.org/linux-libre/

If this helps and you'd be willing to dig deeper you could compare the kernel
configs to see what they do differently (although this will likely be a long
list)

*free distro from https://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html

if this helps then we'd at least know it's possible in the free world.

The updates installed. I was embarrased to find that the brightness could be
adjusted in the settings panel, but the setting only lasts the one session.
Next boot it comes on darkened, the brighness 'slider' at 0. I find if the
brightness is as it should be, mine looks ok at about 60%, if I then boot
into Windows it is the same. Doesn't his indicate that something is happening
at the hardware level? It seems to be an issue relating to laptops only, and
admittedly this is the first time i've installed Linux on anything other than
a desktop machine. I've seen this or similar issues in forums elsewhere,
dating back to 2011. Users say older kernels did not produce this issue,
that it appeared somewhere between 2.6 3 versions. Not overly concerned
about a solution, but if one should happen along, i'd like to try to
implement it.

Hello!

I think you have to (or rather you'd better to) translate it via Launchpad
as the project is hosted there (including translations). Here is the link to
the translations: https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity.

And thanks in advance for translating it into french! ;)

PS: You can choose the version at the bottom of the page (Trisquel 7 is based
on Ubuntu 14.04 and Trisquel 6 on Ubuntu 12.04).
PS 2: I see that the translation is complete for Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04. If
you still have untranslated strings, it might be because of strings that have
not been configured as to be translated. If this is the case, you should
probably report a bug about this.

I wish to fetch an episode of a radio drama that was broadcast on Radio 4
last night, according to the schedule. Last week, I gave the command,

get-player Good Omens --future

and got numbers that, I believe, correspond to the 6 episodes in the series.
Today, I tried

get-iplayer --get 12130
this is supposed to be the first episode.

Program came back 'no matches'. Now, any searches for Good Omens come back
'no matches'. Did BBC pull the program, or, am I doing something wrong?

Thanks,

Older versions of GNOME had a hardware tab that allowed you to manually
select what hardware to use. That was removed at some point between 3.4 and
3.10. I understand why they did it (because ideally GNOME should be able to
figure out what to use automatically), but I do wish they'd left in an easy
way to manually override this...

I suppose the way to do it now is to change something in the dconf Editor,
but I don't know what.

The command is shred. It's part of coreutils; a basic command of the

Re: [Trisquel-users] If Chromebooks retail for $250 and have free-BIOSes ...

2014-12-23 Thread chris
It's probably not possible at this time. There may be some potential
candidates around the corner that it may be possible to totally free (at
least the core board, ie not necessarily including hard drives, etc). There
are issues with the wifi being integrated on most of the chromebooks. If you
can't replace the wifi its a no-go as all the integrated chips (like ath6k)
are dependent on non-free firmware. If we can find an upcoming model with a
particular set of chipsets now shipping and also has a mini pcie half height
slot (some do) then it might be possible to free one. These would potentially
be better potential candidates I feel than other systems being worked on
right now.

If a seperate partition is the default, then it will make it much easier if I
