Re: [Trisquel-users] [OT] Fetching BBC Radio Programs with get-iplayer?
Good job done by leny2010. I also want to learn this by searching on google. I have already tried to do this but fail. May be i am doing something wrong. I like a program of Radio and commonly i used BBC News Online (http://bbcnewsplanet.com/) to listen the radio program. Thanks for sharing the nice information with us.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Old Kernels
(As I've said above) Unlike (most) other pacakges, different versions of the kernel are provided in different packages, and because of that don't overwrite each other. To remove them you've got to manually do so by locating their packages. Or if they're installed only because one of the linux meta packages dragged them, This should do: sudo apt-get autoremove --purge
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does anyone use freenet?
I have never seen any inappropriate content on I2P so far (except for normal pornographic content). Maybe you just want to give it a try.
[Trisquel-users] Re : 2 Trisquel Problems
Don't you use the GNOME edition of Trisquel? If yes, then Brightness and lock should be in the System settings! You can launch it from a terminal with 'gnome-control-center screen'; You can update with 'apt-get' but not with the Update manager? What about updating with the Synaptic package manager (in the System settings)? While you are running it, see whether gnome-control-center is installed (if the command above is not found) and whether you have broken packages (click the Custom filters button in th lower-left corner of the window and then choose Broken in the list above).
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Updates: Opensource/Free FPS standalone mod of Xonotic (ChaosEsque) version 42 etc.
New Release: 46. Did a good deal of code having to do with doors and the buildable building code. You can now build doors. You can also teamlock doors you build or doors that come with buildings you build. Also in the code you can directly set door trigger mins/maxs and set doors to open for less things than normaly they would (ie: only players/bots/ and monsters, not just anything that moves). Some new commands have also been added: lock, unlock, softlock, hardlock, multitool placetype and multitool buildingsnap. Placetype allows you to switch from building where you are standing to building where you are looking forward a little bit. Buildingsnap allows you to have building snap to 64qunits like blocks if you wish. New Buildables -Wood Door -Steel Door -Wood Paneled Door -Glass Door Ability to teamlock doors on buildable buildings. Re: [Trisquel-users] my family want me to install non-free software
Hi all, I am sort of in the same situation as the topic starter. I have been using GNU/Linux for a while now. Started with Ubuntu, but switched to Mint after the Amazon implementations. Now I started reading the fsf and RMS websites and I agree with their points of view. I wanted to try one of the complete free distro's and installed BLAG on an old Lenovo T60. Works fine, lthough I do need an external wifi card but found an old Linksys Wireless G adapter which works. At the moment we are using a Macbook (a mistake, please do not judge me ;-)) on which I installed Mint (including propriatary drivers for the NVIDIA card and prop. codecs). I am looking for a new laptop and am thinking of buying this one: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/humboldt-penguin-gnu-linux-notebook and run Trisquel 7 on it (tried it on the Lenovo but the graphics messed up after I closed and opened the lid, that i why I tried BLAG) and go for a completely free laptop. Now I have three problems which i need to sort out before making this step: 1. My wife needs to use citrix to connect to her work. I am yet to find a free alternative 2. My children (4 and 6) like to play games on the computer. They play old DOS games in DOSBOX (is that okay from a free point of view?) but also flash games. 3. We like to watch public television programs from this site: http://www.npo.nl/ which uses flash (although they mention a html5 player coming soon) I tried opening the streams in video players but they do not work. Any idea on those? Thanks in advance! Jasper
[Trisquel-users] flac2opus
What do you use to convert (and write the metadata at the same time) from flac to opus?
Re: [Trisquel-users] BLAG 200000
Looks good!
Re: [Trisquel-users] BLAG 200000
Doesn't SeaMonkey have the same trademark problem as Firefox? If so, it needs to be rebranded (Debian rebranded it as Iceape but later got rid of it)
Re: [Trisquel-users] flac2opus
DeaDBeeF with opus-tools. Opus is good when you need to overcome upload limits.
Re: [Trisquel-users] my family want me to install non-free software
1. My wife needs to use citrix to connect to her work. I am yet to find a free alternative It looks to me like Citrix is a company, not a program. Which program is it? If it's something that allows her to access a desktop remotely, maybe she could use VNC? Depends on her employer's policy, too. 2. My children (4 and 6) like to play games on the computer. They play old DOS games in DOSBOX (is that okay from a free point of view?) but also flash games. Running DOS programs in DOSBox still runs those programs' code, so if that code is proprietary, you're obviously running proprietary software. Personally, I'd recommend you show them some libre games. Trisquel has some, and there's also the Libre Game Wiki: http://libregamewiki.org
Re: [Trisquel-users] my family want me to install non-free software
1. if your wife NEEDS that application for work then if you MUST use it you can see if it runs in wine: https://www.winehq.org/download/ but i hope her employer will let her use a alternate method to connect to work if not then there may be pepole on this fourm who know more about that application than me and i reccomend asking before you install a unethical program. 2. there are many good libre software games here is a post i made listing some: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/wa-can-change-not-one-day#comment-62064 non-libre dos games normally are less harmfull than programs like adobe flash but still unethical but you may find some libre dos games for example doom is now licensed under the gpl the levels are still proprietry though so freedoom was made: https://freedoom.github.io/ if your kids play flash games then the chances are they will have to play the libre games avalible: http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Category/Game but i relise giving up games is not always a easy thing :( *cries*... 3. thats not something i know too much about i reccomend starting a form topic dedicated to the question
Re: [Trisquel-users] [OT] Fetching BBC Radio Programs with get-iplayer?
I found the schedule for the radio program of interest and downloaded the episodes with youtube-dl instead of get-iplayer. Why do they use flash video for files containing only audio? I tried converting one to ogg with oggconvert; the result sounded horrible; I'll just keep the flv's for now.
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to enable log-in sound
I didn't realize they had electronic instruments back in old Messopotamia; LOL. You can replace the file with any sound you like; I just use the stock Trisquel one that has been in place since Brigantia, maybe earlier, but that's when I started using Trisquel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] my family want me to install non-free software
Note that a fair amount of (Older, about 2007 or so) Flash games still work with Gnash, so they won't have to give up entirely on Flash games.
Re: [Trisquel-users] BLAG 200000
Nice to see it's still active! Blag 2000 comes with GNOME 3 (non-fallback) by default, right? That's nice.
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to enable log-in sound
p.s - if you can get over their awful accent - a very nice band!!
Re: [Trisquel-users] my family want me to install non-free software
Thanks for your comments! Regarding citrix, I need a progam to open .ica files. Citrix has GNU versions available, just not libre. Thanks for the list of games, i will have a look. I know about some of them, but I'm a bit worried about letting my kid play doom already ;-) I will continue my research.
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to enable log-in sound
it reminded me of an album http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwPz53zPNPc it's a nice login sound but it doesn't work for me
Re: [Trisquel-users] flac2opus
I wrote some scripts for this, they might be that they could do with some more work but it's a start http://software.aross.me the opus tools are very good in that you can give them a flac, they will copy the metadata over to the encoded opus file. however they don't do batch processing which is what my scripts do.
Re: [Trisquel-users] BLAG 200000
It does (all the while being left in Parabola's dust, of course).
Re: [Trisquel-users] flac2opus
I noticed that the script in question (http://george.the-petries.co.uk/software/media_processing_scripts/flacs2opus.sh) is missing a license. I'm assuming this is just an oversight. :-)
Re: [Trisquel-users] flac2opus
Ups. I have read the man page. Now I see that opusenc from opus-tools does read flac without a problem. Problem solved! As for recurent - find and for are two commands that can do miracles. Sure, a GUI would be good. But besides the regular two bit scripts that invoke gstreamer, there's not much in the repositories.
Re: [Trisquel-users] my family want me to install non-free software
I think you mean your wife uses citrix app server or something I think they use rdp, try using remmina.
Re: [Trisquel-users] BLAG 200000
Where did you get this version of BLAG? The latest I see on the download page (http://www.blagblagblag.org/download/index.html) is 14.
Re: [Trisquel-users] new user to linux
hello I'm looking into purchasing a refurbished laptop from a small local computer shop, is there any concerns with such a purposes besides trisquel gnu/linux not working I mean should I be concerned with embedded virus in hard drive or in the hardware or even the bios? If I could I would buy new but I rather buy something used and give it a new purpose but that just me
Re: [Trisquel-users] BLAG 200000
My Blag has MATE; i got it here: ftp://blag.fsf.org/20/Live/x86_64/Alpha/ thanks to islander. It's not just you, Jaded. Bleeding edge software isn't a huge concern for me, but security updates are. It's still nice to see choices.

People should not assume anything. It should be written somewhere. Besides copyright is granted the moment something is published even in the US.
[Trisquel-users] text to speech voice david is it free enough and then how do I install?
http://www.cepstral.com/en/personal/download/?os=linuxrefpage=linux Is it fine to use the voice by the standards of this forum? If it is, can I get explained how to install it? On the cepstral forum I found some info on how to install, but not much and not info that enabled me to install the voice. I am not writting links, if this forum cannot answer because of the free software standards. Because the voice comes with a private use only license it cannot be fsf free software. In generel if the source code for a piece of software is available but other restrictions may apply, then you cannot ask questions about that piece of software on this forum?
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to enable log-in sound
About the only thing I miss from winblows is my old log-in sound: http://wavcentral.com/sounds/televis/lost_space/lsbest.mp3 Well, that and the cursor that flipped links the bird instead of pointing at them
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to enable log-in sound
Nothing stopping you from putting that favorite login sound into your Trisquel. Not sure what you can do with the pointer; LOL.
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to enable log-in sound
Nah, I'm not changing this for a long time if ever. It's way too pretty and it brings back good memories ;) I do kind of wish I could enable the log-off sounds and generally have a noisier 'puter; I tweaked that windoze sound scheme until I felt like a mad scientist playing all these weird clips from movies and TV and my then-teenaged daughter rolled her eyes disgustedly and said, Please be quieter. ;) The eye candy is kind of wasted on me these days, but I have absolutely no right to judge KDE/Gnome 3 peeps for their priorities.
Re: [Trisquel-users] new user to linux
I'm glad to hear you are considering buying a pre-owned laptop, thereby keeping a few bits of toxic materials out of the waste stream. Also, you're repurposing perfectly-good hardware. Before installing any new operating system onto such a machine, I'd shred the drive. You can do this from any GNU/Linux live image, such as Trisquel 7. Boot the live medium, open a terminal, use the lsblk command to learn what device refers to the hard drive. That done, you can do sudo shred /dev/sda for instance, assuming the hard drive is /dev/sda. You could also do something like sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda This would write 0 onto the entire disk, unless you stop before it finishes. HTH, Dave
Re: [Trisquel-users] BLAG 200000
I tried a BLAG GNOME live image, and found that it has no accessibility, thereby denying a class of users freedom #0, nevermind the other three.
Re: [Trisquel-users] BLAG 200000
Praise be to Parabola, which allows you to tippy toe along the bleeding edge with a system that won't betray you. Now, as far as BLAG goes, is it true the Gdnewhat guys are now working on BLAG? Their website refers users to BLAG and Gdnewhat proved long ago they could get a fully free Redhat clone perfected.
Re: [Trisquel-users] BLAG 200000
I'm glad to see that there's active development of fully free systems. Freedom 0 is “The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose” [1]. This doesn't mean that a neccesary condition or a program to be free is that everybody is able to do everything with a program; that's absurd and impossible. For instance, no program can solve the halting problem (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halting_problem). In the way it's written, it's very open to interpretation, but from the rest of the material on free software it's clear that freedom 0 referes to the absence of artificial legal and technical restrictions to run the program (Artificial in the sense of being anti-features whose sole purpose is to restrict usage, such as digital restrictions managemnt). For instance, software which has the legal restriction that it can only be used with a specific operating system is proprietary, but software which is under a free license, has source code available, etcetera, and depends on a programming interface specific to an operating system is free. Likewise, the user interface of free software may demand physical capabilities that some handicapped people will not have, or knowledge that not everybody has. Neither of the requirements mentioned in this paragraph make software proprietary. [1]: What is free software? - The Free Software Definition https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.en.html
Re: [Trisquel-users] BLAG 200000
I agree that it's not a freedom problem, but it *is* a problem and should be fixed with high priority.
Re: [Trisquel-users] new user to linux
Even if there is a Windows virus left over in the RAM or hard drive: 1. Trisquel isn't going to attempt to execute them. They're going to be completely ignored, in fact. 2. Even if Trisquel attempted to execute them, it would fail, because they're written for Windows. Keep in mind that viruses are just a type of program. If they never execute, they aren't a threat.

[Trisquel-users] Best Secure AMD Laptop for free software
I'm looking for the best secure free software friendly modern laptop with an AMD CPU, and Powerful GPU. Will compromise on BIOS, but TPM, UEFI, Trusted Computing, or baked in Processor WIFI allowing remote involuntary firmware/microcode changes is not an option, also would like to avoid peripherals with lots of writable flash storage that's easily infectable. Will even compromise on WIFI card, since it can be removed. It seems all the threads listing options for good Free Software and or refurbished Laptops focus on ones with Intel chips which all come with Baked in Processor SPYFI. I've tested a quad core HP DV6 witch falls within these guidelines, but when encryption is done, example PGP, during the exact time of encryption my little AM radio Buzzes during the encryption. I need one that doesn’t do this. My other Laptop tested to be secure, leaks no data during crypto processing. Can we get a secure Laptop Thread Going Here? Cheers
[Trisquel-users] Re : text to speech voice david is it free enough and then how do I install?
That is correct: this community only provides help on free software. If an application cannot be used commercially (for instance), then it is not free software because freedom 0 is not satisfied.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 2 Trisquel Problems
He's using Trisquel Mini.
[Trisquel-users] Re : new user to linux
He may be talking about malware in the hardware (more precisely in their firmware). The BIOS launches it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] trisquel-recommended package
Thanks for the answers, guys! Thanks to you I was able to get rid of unneded stuff :)
[Trisquel-users] Re : Best Secure AMD Laptop for free software
Laptops with AMD processors come with AMD graphic cards. You will not get any 3D acceleration with such a card. Linux-libre perfectly handles the Intel graphical chipsets (except the PowerVR ones). That is why you only see Trisquel laptops with Intel processors. As far as I know ThinkPenguin only sell laptops with Intel processors that do not include TXT or vPro and with Wifi cards that Linux-libre handles out of the box. Their BIOS or UEFI is proprietary though.

Re: [Trisquel-users] flac2opus
I think you may be confusing the minimum standards for copyright eligibility with the FSF's recommendation for when to use a copyleft license. They recommend using a copyleft license when a program is over 300 lines of code, and licensing anything with less than 300 lines of code under a permissive free software license. For files included in a software distribution that is part of the GNU project, the FSF requires licenses on all files greater that 10 lines of code, because that is approximately the minimal creativity required for a program to be eligible for copyright. By the way, I'd recommend using the CC0 license instead of just putting the text public domain in your code because it is more legally watertight[1][2]. https://creativecommons.org/choose/zero/ [1] https://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#PublicDomain [2] https://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#informal Copyright licensing does get confusing. It would be easier not to not have to worry about it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] BLAG 200000
The FSF actually has an article specifically about this: https://gnu.org/philosophy/imperfection-isnt-oppression.html
