(As I've said above) Unlike (most) other pacakges, different versions of the
kernel are provided in different packages, and because of that don't
overwrite each other. To remove them you've got to manually do so by locating
their packages.

Or if they're installed only because one of the linux meta packages dragged
them, This should do:

 sudo apt-get autoremove --purge

Don't you use the GNOME edition of Trisquel? If yes, then Brightness and
lock should be in the System settings! You can launch it from a terminal
with 'gnome-control-center screen';
You can update with 'apt-get' but not with the Update manager? What about
updating with the Synaptic package manager (in the System settings)?
While you are running it, see whether gnome-control-center is installed (if
the command above is not found) and whether you have broken packages (click
the Custom filters button in th lower-left corner of the window and then
choose Broken in the list above).

New Release: 46.
Did a good deal of code having to do with doors and the buildable building
code. You can now build doors. You can also teamlock doors you build or doors
that come with buildings you build. Also in the code you can directly set
door trigger mins/maxs and set doors to open for less things than normaly
they would (ie: only players/bots/ and monsters, not just anything that
moves). Some new commands have also been added: lock, unlock, softlock,
hardlock, multitool placetype and multitool buildingsnap. Placetype allows
you to switch from building where you are standing to building where you are
looking forward a little bit. Buildingsnap allows you to have building snap
to 64qunits like blocks if you wish.

New Buildables -Wood Door -Steel Door -Wood Paneled Door -Glass Door Ability
to teamlock doors on buildable buildings. Misc improvements.

Re: [Trisquel-users] my family want me to install non-free software

2015-01-16 Thread sleepruim

Hi all,

I am sort of in the same situation as the topic starter. I have been using
GNU/Linux for a while now. Started with Ubuntu, but switched to Mint after
the Amazon implementations. Now I started reading the fsf and RMS websites
and I agree with their points of view. I wanted to try one of the complete
free distro's and installed BLAG on an old Lenovo T60. Works fine, lthough I
do need an external wifi card but found an old Linksys Wireless G adapter
which works.

At the moment we are using a Macbook (a mistake, please do not judge me ;-))
on which I installed Mint (including propriatary drivers for the NVIDIA card
and prop. codecs). I am looking for a new laptop and am thinking of buying
this one:

https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/humboldt-penguin-gnu-linux-notebook

and run Trisquel 7 on it (tried it on the Lenovo but the graphics messed up
after I closed and opened the lid, that i why I tried BLAG) and go for a
completely free laptop.

Now I have three problems which i need to sort out before making this step:

1. My wife needs to use citrix to connect to her work. I am yet to find a
free alternative
2. My children (4 and 6) like to play games on the computer. They play old
DOS games in DOSBOX (is that okay from a free point of view?) but also
flash games.
3. We like to watch public television programs from this site:
http://www.npo.nl/ which uses flash (although they mention a html5 player
coming soon) I tried opening the streams in video players but they do not
work.

Any idea on those?

Thanks in advance!
Jasper

 1. My wife needs to use citrix to connect to her work. I
am yet to find a free alternative

It looks to me like Citrix is a company, not a program. Which program is it?

If it's something that allows her to access a desktop remotely, maybe she
could use VNC? Depends on her employer's policy, too.

 2. My children (4 and 6) like to play games on the
computer. They play old DOS games in DOSBOX (is that okay
from a free point of view?) but also flash games.

Running DOS programs in DOSBox still runs those programs' code, so if that
code is proprietary, you're obviously running proprietary software.

Personally, I'd recommend you show them some libre games. Trisquel has some,
and there's also the Libre Game Wiki:

if not then there may be pepole on this fourm who know more about that

2.
there are many good libre software games here is a post i made listing some:

non-libre dos games normally are less harmfull than programs like adobe flash
but still unethical

but you may find some libre dos games for example doom is now licensed under
the gpl the levels are still proprietry though so freedoom was made:

if your kids play flash games then the chances are they will have to play the
libre games avalible:

I'm glad to hear you are considering buying a pre-owned laptop, thereby
keeping a few bits of toxic materials out of the waste stream. Also, you're
repurposing perfectly-good hardware. Before installing any new operating
system onto such a machine, I'd shred the drive. You can do this from any
GNU/Linux live image, such as Trisquel 7. Boot the live medium, open a
terminal, use the lsblk command to learn what device refers to the hard
drive. That done, you can do

sudo shred /dev/sda

for instance, assuming the hard drive is /dev/sda.

You could also do something like

sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda

This would write 0 onto the entire disk, unless you stop before it finishes.

Re: [Trisquel-users] BLAG 200000

2015-01-16 Thread marioxcc . MT

I'm glad to see that there's active development of fully free systems.

Freedom 0 is “The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any
purpose” [1]. This doesn't mean that a neccesary condition or a program to
be free is that everybody is able to do everything with a program; that's
absurd and impossible. For instance, no program can solve the halting problem
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halting_problem). In the way it's written,
it's very open to interpretation, but from the rest of the material on free
software it's clear that freedom 0 referes to the absence of artificial legal
and technical restrictions to run the program (Artificial in the sense of
being anti-features whose sole purpose is to restrict usage, such as digital
restrictions managemnt).

For instance, software which has the legal restriction that it can only be
used with a specific operating system is proprietary, but software which is
under a free license, has source code available, etcetera, and depends on a
programming interface specific to an operating system is free. Likewise, the
user interface of free software may demand physical capabilities that some
handicapped people will not have, or knowledge that not everybody has.
Neither of the requirements mentioned in this paragraph make software
proprietary.

I think you may be confusing the minimum standards for copyright eligibility
with the FSF's recommendation for when to use a copyleft license. They
recommend using a copyleft license when a program is over 300 lines of code,
and licensing anything with less than 300 lines of code under a permissive
free software license.

For files included in a software distribution that is part of the GNU
project, the FSF requires licenses on all files greater that 10 lines of
code, because that is approximately the minimal creativity required for a
program to be eligible for copyright.

By the way, I'd recommend using the CC0 license instead of just putting the
text public domain in your code because it is more legally
watertight[1][2].

https://creativecommons.org/choose/zero/

[1] https://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#PublicDomain
[2] https://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#informal

Copyright licensing does get confusing. It would be easier not to not have to
