I thought this was strictly an Orca problem, and was contemplating a full-time switch to mutt or alpine for mail. The problem became apparent the first time I used enygmail to sign a message. The problem seems to have vanished as mysteriously as it began appearing. Still have enygmail, and lightning extensions in icedove. I'm pretty sure that if you install 'gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad' and 'gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly' you'll get all widely used codecs. Trisquel 7 installs them by default. 'libfaac0' is the only codec package I found that 'ubuntu-restricted-extras' installs, but isn't available in Trisquel. I don't know why would you want that package, as it seems like 'libaacs0' provides the same encoder. Apparently Ubuntu puts non-free packages in a repository called multiverse. But Ubuntu, Debian and Trisquel have different opinions on what is considered free or non-free, so not all things in Ubuntu's multiverse are considered non-free by Trisquel. That's why most codec packages installed by 'ubuntu-restricted-extras' are available in Trisquel. That said, some codecs have software patents problems, so other codecs/containers/formats are preferred for freedom sake, such as: Ogg, WebM, FLAC, Opus, Vorbis, Speex, VP9, VP8, Theora... No idea about Mplayer (which I think Trisquel uses by default). I don't think Mplayer is installed by default, at least not on Trisquel 7 (non-mini) - Totem (aka GNOME Videos) is the default video player.

With this kind of projects you should always wait and see before endorsing. When it comes out we should make a judgment by installing a completely free OS and seeing what works. That said, the AllWinner processor (SoC) uses the Mali-400 GPU, which is known to be problematic, as it requires non-free software. There's a reverse engineering free software project called http://limadriver.org/, and it has made progress, but I don't know if its usable. But Chip can be useful even without the GPU. Maybe the WiFi or Bluetooth won't work, but who knows. About problems with AllWinner in general, I don't think we can endorse any CPU manufacturer anyway. To me AllWinner don't seem much worse than Intel, AMD or others, which also distribute and require non-free software for their hardware to work. So I wouldn't judge the developers of Chip just because they chose to use an AllWinner SoC. We should wait and see.

(I'm at work with limited time to search the forum so I apologize if this has been answered before.) CHIP looks really cool and I like the PDA-style device it attaches to but I'm concerned about this for two reasons: 1) Is there any need for non-free software to run this device? I'm sick of devices which portray themselves as free (they say open) but have some irritating catch that makes it non-free in practice. This is supposed to be licensed under a free license for hardware, but I'm not sure of all the details. 2) I've heard disturbing things about willful GPL violations in the past by their partner in this venture. I believe it's Allwinner. I would have scruples in endorsing people who carelessly violate the principles of the movement. Any knowledge our brilliant forum has would be helpful.

Allwinner does have a checkered past and I generally twitch when I see the term open source used so many times. I have serous doubts about this project. Its also clear it comes loaded with lots of blobs and access to even more non-free bits. Whether all that could be removed and replaced with a usable free system seems like a fools errand to me.

I've flashed the rom by myself,i ddidn't bought it from Gluglug. I've tried various distros(Gnewsense,Musix,Debian,Trisquel 6,even Mint).The only two that booted in Live mode without problem were Trisquel 6 and Mint. At one point i kept the laptop on the Libreboot menu few times for 5/10 minutes and it was shutting down as well due to overheating. After i've done a proper fan cleaning with an aridust can the problem seemed to be solved. Then again shutdown while i was using: Icecat Abrowser DosBox emulator for the browers seems to be caused by Gnash let's see what's happend next

My openbox user personal opinion. The beauty of openbox it’s to use this windows manager without nothing. You can choose the open applications with the key “Alt+Tab” (you can change it in .config/openbox/rc.xml I use “Ctrl+Tab” in my laptop) without panel you will need to replace “network-manager” with “wicd”. For the battery I use this command “xterm -fg white -bg black -fa 'Monospace' -fs 10 -e watch --interval=5 acpi -V” like shortcut. If you want use things like panels better LXDE. ^_^

After completely replaced Ubuntu with Trisquel I found mp3 and most of video audio formats are supported. So, I want to know which free package(s) are pre-installed in Trisquel which supports most of audio video formats. Can I get list of free packages that are replacement (or something similar) for ubuntu-restricted-extras?

Until about as month ago, my ThinkPad T420 worked great under Trisquel 7 using a ThinkPenguin USB wireless adapter, but now it regularly connects at 6Mb/s (that's mega_bits_ per second) and frequently disconnects. This morning the process of accessing webmail and then sending a single email (admittedly while looking up a couple of documents for reference) consumed two hours. Several times the system could not find my ISP and I couldn't even ping the ISP's domain. By comparison, when I run the same laptop with Windows 7, the connection speed is a hundred times faster, albeit with the built-in wireless hardware. How can I diagnose this problem ? Are there settings somewhere that can be tweaked ?

just from personal experience when i got the thinkpenguin usb wifi card (the small black one) it was doing the same thing on my old dell laptop from 2001 i then read that i do-sent work well with some old computers and i got the big white one as seen here(https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-wireless-g-usb-adapter) and it worked perfectly but you should use thinkpenguins support
