Re: [Trisquel-users] Freedom Certified Hardware
LibreJS is a great tool for ensuring ethical behavior, but keep in mind that even libre software may be malicious. Onpon wrote an article on why JavaScript is bad in general: https://onpon4.github.io/other/kill-js/ As a side note, LibreJS has caused a few websites to load very slowly for me. If you face similar issues, I recommend NoScript. It doesn't recognize libre scripts, but blocks all JS instead. Allow scripts with care!

Re: [Trisquel-users] Anybody ever used ReactOS (a non-GNU/Linux-libre system)
It's not that it allows this use, it's that it's designed for it. I don't know if there are any libre Windows drivers for anything, but in general, they're proprietary, and the ReactOS project doesn't aim to correct this. That being the case, ReactOS used as a completely libre system is pretty much guaranteed to be useless, if it even runs at all, on a real computer (as opposed to a virtual machine). I'm not saying ReactOS should be boycotted, or anything like that. I'm saying it's pointless to consider it as an option for a completely libre system.

As long as the OS is Free Software that OS is worthy of consideration for development, use, and recommendation to others. It's unfortunate that GNU/Linux systems allow proprietary drivers too, but I wouldn't rule out using a GNU/Linux system on the basis that the system's design allows the use of proprietary software such as drivers (and I don't think the FSF does either in their Free System Distribution Guidelines[1]). I also don't recall anything about software freedom that would favor convenience, or favor one set of APIs over another set of APIs (as might affect building programs with a Free C++ compiler versus some non-free C++ compiler) without some clear adverse effect on a user's freedoms to run, study, share, and modify the software. Those concerns all strike me to be developmental details. Could one build software with Free Software compilers such as MinGW using https://www.reactos.org/wiki/Building_MINGW-w64 as build instructions? [1] But that's not to say ReactOS would qualify to be listed among the Free Systems that meet the guidelines listed on https://www.gnu.org/distros/free-system-distribution-guidelines.html. Assessing ReactOS's qualifications for listing will require more investigation.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Anybody ever used ReactOS (a non-GNU/Linux-libre system)
ReactOS doesn't work all that well yet, but when it does, you'll have an OS that can run less libre programs than GNU/Linux, and probably worse than GNU/Linux. Just stick with Trisquel, or some other such FSDG distro.

Oh okay. Down with ReactOS then.
[Trisquel-users] Anybody ever used ReactOS (a non-GNU/Linux-libre system)
ReactOS is an Free Software and open-source operating system that is trying to be compatible with Windows applications. And it does just that. Of course it is its own OS of its own, and runs very well. It's better than Windows, if course as it follows my love of Freedom.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Good Free Software IDE For Fortran (for Windows)
It is terrible. It is because I still need to install GNU/Linux-libre on my other workststation. GNU/Linux-libre is the best progrmers environment ever. It has the best cmmand-line ever. And Freedom if course.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Add custom compose key sequence (Not working)
I found solution which is working:- first of all it was my mistake that I created `~/.Xcompose` instead of `~/.XCompose` Install uim (Universal Input Method) Add `export GTK_IM_MODULE=uim` to `~/.profile` Restart the gnome-session Now custom compose key sequence defined in `~/.XCompose` is working fine. Note that `export GTK_IM_MODULE=xim` is not working.

Yeah and learning keyboard shortcuts isn't what I need right now. I need a free-typing (free flowing) text editor and compiler and debug log, an IDE.

[Trisquel-users] Yet another Fortran Question
Can libraries be used in Fortran. As I have seen you can make calls to C files and get values returned from them (functions) or just call them to run something (methods). Without C libraries Fortran seems to be pretty boring as it then relies only on its rather mathematical built-ins, built-in mathematical functions that is.

Thanks; I was just curious, having heard the names of systemd components go by as I was upgrading; was just wondering if there was some kind of incremental move under way. [Trisquel-users] New Trisquel user, looking for focus
Hello, I am very glad to have gotten Trisquel up and running. Right now I am still running a dual boot with windows 7 but I am hoping the more I learn here, the less I will need my windows installation and perhaps some day be done with it altogether. I have run ubuntu in the past and I have taken a class on linux and bash commands but it has been quite some time and most of that has been forgotten. I have resolved to start using trisquel because it seems you have a friendly community and I am growing tired never knowing what my computer is doing, even though it is MY computer. Very strange. The problem for me is finding an area to focus on. I am overwhelmed by the amount of things to learn with GNU linux. There is the terminal, drivers, programming (I know some basic and java and that is it), all the processes running in the background (a lot like windows but I assume these can actually be better understood, also understand this whole concept of a linux kernel. There is just so much to learn so I definity appreciate any advice on where to start.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Trisquel user, looking for focus
I am overwhelmed by the amount of things to learn with GNU linux. There is the terminal, drivers, programming (I know some basic and java and that is it) just to confirm learning how to program use the terminal or understand how the Linux kernel works is not required for using a gnu/linux system my grandma knows very little about computers and is fine using it = however learning these things can be very usefull and its always a good thing to understand how your system works and if you learn how to program then you can change anything in your system(providing its libre) as for were to start learning about gnu/linux this rely depends on what you want to know but if you just want to understand your system better a good start would be learning about the directory structure gnu/linux uses a different directory system from windows instead of having different drive names like c:/ a:/ d:/ etc gnu/linux uses a single root directory so just / and everything is below this directory if you want to see your root directory on trisquel just goto the file manager and under devices select computer this link may help you understand a bit better: http://www.thegeekstuff.com/2010/09/linux-file-system-structure/ and feel free to ask about stuff you dont understand
Re: [Trisquel-users] Anybody ever used ReactOS (a non-GNU/Linux-libre system)
Trisquel is awesome.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Trisquel user, looking for focus
Just learn some low level programming language, or a language that allow low level control (like C/C++). Through all the process, you will learn what you need to know about computers (including terminal and drivers). Once you have finish with that, if you want to know every single thing your computer does, then you just need to read all the source code of all the software you wanna install on your computer (and compile it yourself, obviously). Luckily, you have the full source code in a 100% free software world like this :)

This seems too discouraging to me. I wouldn't want to discourage any Free Software development because the Free program only runs on a VM (so long as that VM is Free Software; non-free dependencies ought to be replaced, of course). I haven't written an operating system but I imagine it's very difficult to do without depending on some Free Software to build upon, like GNU did. And I imagine the OS will require a lot of time before the system can run on modern hardware. Perhaps ReactOS isn't mature enough to use in daily use now, but the last time I saw GNU/HURD it wasn't mature enough for me to use daily either. However I still think it's fantastic that people are working on GNU/HURD.
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel as a server os
If I wanted to use Trisquel as a server OS but I do not want the desktop environment to be installed. Should I use the Trisquel net-installer iso, I am assuming there is an option for disabling installation of the desktop environment. Unchexkong that option. Also, what web-server should I use? Isn't Cherokee a GPL licensed web-server?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Yet another Fortran Question
So you could mame graphical user interfaces.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel as a server os
Also. Is Cherokee easy to install and configure. I checked their site and it even looks as if they have a web interface for controlling the server which is damn awesome.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Trisquel user, looking for focus
Hi there! I'd say start with the Synaptic package manager under system settings. See how things are arranged and what it can do for you. What kind of packages are offered. Learn about dependencies and how those are automatically resolved for you. Remove the older kernels you probably have. (linux-image-...) Select a fast mirror. Welcome and have fun!

Re: [Trisquel-users] Which packages Trisquel provides in order to provide codes for common video audio files.

Those concerns all strike me to be developmental details. If a non-free compiler is required, then it's not a matter of convenience or preference but instead you're unable to use the package in freedom. In Trisquel such a package would be considered non-free.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
You have conflicting requirements: “cheap” and “mega performance”. Also: don't forget about freedom: not all computers allow the user to make full use of them with a fully free system; you must deliberately make sure (or have an high confidence) that the computer you are going to buy runs well with a fully free system.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Freedom Certified Hardware
That sounds awesome.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Sites Server and Forum Software?
It's better to use nmap locally.
Re: [Trisquel-users] getting an ubuntu notebook and installing debian 8?
That is right. However, I want to make clear that I didn't suggest to search for “works with Linux” as if it was a magical string (I know that your comment doesn't explicitly says that). My suggestion was “research whether it works with free software”, and I did not give any specific procedure for determining whether the hardware works with free software given the documentation or manufacturer web sites (Like searching for claims that it “works with Linux” or that the driver is “open source”).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
Good point. Okay. Well I need old hardware then. Like old PC's. gNewSense works on my old PC in terms of networking , both wireless and wired. Hence the older machines have Free Software drivers, most of the time as compared to newer systems which only have proprietary drivers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
Servers in the sense of (1) computers marketed as servers should not be confused with servers, in the sense of (2) any computing running the server part of a client‐server system. I see that Wikipedia conflates server (1) with server (2), that is it: they discuss “servers” as if (1) and (2) was the same thing. Servers (1) are not very different from other desktop or laptop computers. There are some features sometimes found in “servers” that are not found in desktop and laptop computers, for example: ECC memory, support for more than 1 CPU, hardware RAID controller in motherboard or as a expansion card, rack mountable or blade form factor, support for SAS disks. Almost any computer can be a server (2), you do not need a server (1). Unless you require a feature only found in servers (1), just ask your friends to give you any computer they are going to discard. This is good because it reuses what would otherwise be wasted, it means less money to megacorporations, less environmental contamination, and may monetarily cost you from nothing to less than purchasing a second hard server (1) from an stranger.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
Good point. But I want mega performance.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
Good point. Freedom shall be the first aspect I look for. Thanks ;D
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
I can't comment on the idea that old hardware is more likely to work with free system than old hardware. In any case, I recommend you to do your best to determine whether a computer will work well in a fully free system before purchasing it; I recently wrote a short message about that (the whole thread is about hardware support of free software). Bear in mind that the latest gNewSense release is very old. gNewSense 3 (released in 2011) is based on Debian 6 Squeeze (released in 2011). If it doesn't work with some hardware, maybe a newer release or more recent fully free distribution will work.
