Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
That is what I have decided to do. I am getting old PCs and such to run as dedicated servers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
What OS does your Pi run? Have you made any alterations to it in order for it to have less closed-source blobs?
[Trisquel-users] Can I change the font of onboard?
When I am typing with font of other language (not actually cahnge in language-source or input-method but this is font only), I want to show layout of keyboard according to that font. I've used onboard in order to use as on-screen keyboard but I can't find any setting related to change font. So, How do I cahnge font of onboard? OR, help me to find out : Is there any free-software on-screen keyboard available with feature of changing font?
Re: [Trisquel-users] getting an ubuntu notebook and installing debian 8?
Well done, despite the agent saying crazy things like Yes , though you may need to redownload the drives for all the features to work .
Re: [Trisquel-users] getting an ubuntu notebook and installing debian 8?
I have that laptop. It works without nonfree software (has an Atheros wifi card)
Re: [Trisquel-users] getting an ubuntu notebook and installing debian 8?
Actually, I think it uses Broadcom, which requires proprietary firmware. http://www.taringa.net/comunidades/linuxeros-debian/9266886/Problema-Solucionado-Broadcom-BCM43142-Debian-Jessie.html
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
Now that like propretery software. But super dick. Like notepad.exe is closed source, but imagine if it could only open Microsoft text files with a license. Thatbanalogy I just made is super dick. However all proprietary software is the same, all dick crap.
Re: [Trisquel-users] getting an ubuntu notebook and installing debian 8?
No, I got the Inspiron *15* 3000 (a different model), the wifi worked but not ethernet. According to the link I posted, the Inspiron 14 3000 uses Broadcom, requiring nonfree firmware. (davidnotcoulthard: that chip uses a different driver)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
Have you tried this: https://www.raspberrypi.org/quake-iii-bounty-we-have-a-winner/ ? Does it let you start up without the blob?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
i used a watt meter to measure the power usage
Re: [Trisquel-users] getting an ubuntu notebook and installing debian 8?
legimet did the computer have ubuntu installed? I reckon it does not matter because about hardware a windows or ubuntu inspiron 3000 will be the same. I am considering the inspiron 14 3000 celeron because it sells at 220usd, http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-14-3451-laptop-ubuntu/pd About compability I assume it makes no difference which cpu you select. You bought the computer and ethernet and wifi did not work? The rest of the hardware devices do? Then you put in another wifi chip and now wifi works? Is the computer noisy? Is it easy to access the hdd? Is the display glossy? Would you write a short review on the computer? I cannot read the language in your link.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
it runs raspbian: https://www.raspbian.org/ the pi port of debian and i have made some changes to it by default the non-free repo's are enabled in /etc/apt/sources.list and a few non-free programs are installed you can check if non-free debian packages are installed using vrms also and remove all the stuff it detects but still the program that start up the raspberry pi is non-free and apparently stops you from using decoding hardware for decoding mpeg-2 and VC-1 without a specific key
Re: [Trisquel-users] getting an ubuntu notebook and installing debian 8?
Unless it works with OpenFWWF (like the BCM 4311 on the HP Compaq 2710p I'm using does).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can I change the font of onboard?
Does this help? https://answers.launchpad.net/onboard/+question/4901
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
vrms :D lol virtual. Although that name makes sense, and it looks awesome, will definately be throwing this up onto my Pi servers. Thanks. :D Project: http://vrms.alioth.debian.org/
[Trisquel-users] Has any one heard of the VoCore mini pc
So the VoCore (vocore.io) is a little tiny coin sized device with open specs from top to bottom in terms of software and hardware. It runs OpenWRT and to me looks like the only small PC out there that could possibly he fully Free Software compatible, If I am correct. :D Check it out here: http://vocore.io/
[Trisquel-users] Best Project Management CMS Software and Also Git Collabarative Software? (Free Software of course)
So I have been looking around and wondering what to use to manage git repositories on my servers, I chcked out GNU Savannah, and I think it is great! :D. But in terms of software for project management, like Redmine (http://www.redmine.org/), what Free Software project management systems would you guys suggest. Redmine is GPL v2 licensed :D and uses Ruby on Rails.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
“vrms” is misleading, because it is based on the Debian policy, instead of GNU policy (and the name makes it seem like so), and as far as I know, it just checks whether there are packages installed from the proprietary repository section, and you can do the same with any package manager interface (like aptitude). For more information, search “vrms” in this forum. If you install proprietary software by other means, “vrms” won't report it. Based on the expectations on that package users have expressed in this forum, it seems like “vrms” causes more harm than good. It would be better if it was discontinued, or clearly labeled as being entirely humorous and not informational.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
With what purpose? As far as I know, the SOC of the Raspberry Pi has a stupid architecture in which the GPU is the one who initializes the CPU (instead of the other way around). And since there's no free driver for the Broadcom VideoCore IV, then the Raspberry Pi won't even boot with a 100% free Raspbian. That's why it's in the list of Single-board computers with fatal flaws of the FSF[1]. [1] https://www.fsf.org/resources/hw/single-board-computers
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
That sounds good.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
I think I'm gonna buy me a new English dictionary for I have NOT understood a single word of the last post. EDIT - I just checked the dictionary I've been using all these years. It says printed in 1987. I guess the language has changed a lot during all these years. I ordered a new one.
[Trisquel-users] Load-balancing on apache2?
Does anybody know how to get load-balacing going with apache2, also hwo would I mirror contents accroos the servers (static HTML content, no databases), I could use a cron-job and use `wget --mirror [server ip and directory]`?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
Sorry for my - poor typos - spelling errors
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
Maybe we should just get a de-blobing script for the RaspberryPi's Raspbian.
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7.0 Questions
Hello all, I have made the switch finally from 6.0 to 7.0 and as always when one makes a major upgrades some things have broken. I was hoping you all could give me some insight on whether or not I can fix these things. First, I would like to know if there is a way to turn off the fade transitions when one opens windows or menus and get rid of the shadows behind said windows. I much rather just have a good functioning desktop rather than all the flashy things. Second, when I go to select a background the Pictures button only shows pictures in the root of my 'Pictures' folder and there is no way to select a custom area for this. There used to be a way in 6.0, but that has gone. Also, if I want to select a color, I only have the choices given, there is no custom color chooser which is sad. Third, Nautilus. Nautilus seems to be called 'Files' now? The issue that I have with it, is I would like to get rid of the 'web-browser' type navigation and replace it with a traditional 'menu-driven' navigation like I was able to change it to before. Has this feature been removed? And last, System settings. Is there a way to resize the System Settings window? I can only see the top half of the icons and cannot re-position it to show the rest. Before it seemed to stay within the confounds of my resolution, and I could scroll, this does not happen any longer. Thanks ahead for the help, grimlok
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Intel graphics will require non-free firmware
Down with Intel! At least Nvidia has powerfull hardware, and nouveau is making progress with the re-clocking support[1]. I actually bought the GTX 650 hoping it will get good support for 2016. [1] http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=articleitem=phx-open-11num=1
Re: [Trisquel-users] Best Project Management CMS Software and Also Git Collabarative Software? (Free Software of course)
Would GanttProject or Calligra Plan work for you? I'll keep an eye on this topic for others' comments; I'm interested in learning a little about this. https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/project-management
[Trisquel-users] New Intel graphics will require non-free firmware

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7.0 Questions
Thanks for the response Opon.. If you right-click on an image, one of the menu options is Set as Wallpaper. This doesn't help for tiled wallpaper, there is no tile function which is frustrating. I think it has been. If you don't like it, you may want to try a different file manager. Most notably, there's Nemo, which is a fork of Nautilus used by Cinnamon; Thunar, the file manager of Xfce; and PCManFM, the file manager of LXDE. There's also MATE's fork of Nautilus (from GNOME 2), Caja, but that's not in Trisquel's repo at the moment. Very sad that one has to find something else to make something work the way they want it, when it worked that way before. One workaround you can use: hold Alt and click on part of the window, and you can drag it around that way. Thanks, that does help. Is there a way to just blow away GNOME and put Mate on here all together? Has anyone messed with FVWM? It looks very promising, albeit VERY dificult... I played with it a little, and seems to be a bit confusing yet powerful.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7.0 Questions
If you want a tiled wallpaper I think you can use GNOME Tweak Tool. If you don't like Nautilus you can replace it with Cinnamon's Nemo: https://launchpad.net/~webupd8team/+archive/ubuntu/nemo
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7.0 Questions
Ah, my bad, then.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Load-balancing on apache2?
For the mirroring I believe rsync is the right tool. It supports delta operations (i.e. copies only what has changed).

[Trisquel-users] Having a GPG error with apt-get?
I've seen a couple of topics users reporting issues with GPG errors after running apt-get, especially when Trisquel was installed from Ubuntu by the trisquelize.sh script. /* the GPG tranquilizer :) */ The error message used to be something like this: W: GPG error: http://archive.trisquel.info belenos InRelease: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY B4EFB9F38D8AEBF1 W: GPG error: http://archive.trisquel.info belenos-updates InRelease: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY B4EFB9F38D8AEBF1 W: GPG error: http://archive.trisquel.info belenos-security InRelease: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY B4EFB9F38D8AEBF1 I made a very simple script (apt-gpgfix.sh) based upon dpkg-reconfigure that can be used for any Debian-like distro though. Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7.0 Questions
You could try the nitrogen package for picking wallpapers. It allows custom directory and background color and tiling.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7.0 Questions
You don't need a PPA, Nemo is in Trisquel's normal repo.
[Trisquel-users] DRM-free Coffee Mugs!
Over the past year or so Keurig has been getting a lot of criticism from the world at large for its use of digital restrictions of a sort on its Keurig 2.0 coffee maker. You may have learned about this issue from the Free Software Foundation. In any event a number of weeks ago the FSF sent out some emails about how Keurig was back peddling due to the pressure from its customers. Unfortunately it turned out that the company had no plans to actually resolve the DRM problem. Rather it was a public relations stunt to relieve the criticisms- but have no actual impact as far as the DRM was concerned. What the company actually said was more along the lines of we'll get more coffee companies to license our DRM. I had already had enough of this and wanted to do something about it. I personally don't even drink coffee either. In any event I had this great idea on how we can educate people on the problems of digital restrictions and non-free software in general. As this particular issue is in regards to a coffee maker I thought lets make a coffee mug that promote DRM-free coffee (presumably coffee that isn't made with a DRM coffee maker) and use that as a means to drum up conversations on digital restrictions. It's kinda difficult even when your the biggest advocate out there to bring up the topic with non-technical people. However with a mug that screams danger all over it people are bound to ask the question. The coffee mug literally reads DRM-free Coffee. It sounds to the non-technical individual as though there is something dangerous in some brands of coffee. This should (and has already for me) led to multiple conversations on DRM with people I'd never normally speak to about technical things. It's a great conversation starter. https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/drm-free-coffee-mug Now that I've said that the big cost in these for us is shipping-related due to the weight and shape. If your going to an event we're attending like PorcFest (we'll be there in two weeks, in New Hampshire, USA) or South East [GNU]Linux Fest (this coming week in Charlotte, NC, USA) wait on this. You'll probably be able to get one from us then.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7.0 Questions
Very sad that one has to find something else to make something work the way they want it, when it worked that way before. If I'm thinking of what you're thinking of, it was removed from Nautilus because it was deemed unnecessary. It makes sense given GNOME's design principles. Is there a way to just blow away GNOME and put Mate on here all together? Trisquel doesn't use any part of MATE. It's just GNOME, but with GNOME Flashback instead of GNOME Shell. As far as I can tell, to install MATE, you'd need to use a PPA or some other external source.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Intel graphics will require non-free firmware
Hmm...Larabel seems to be the only one who drew that particular conclusion so far, so I still hope it doesn't happen.
Re: [Trisquel-users] DRM-free Coffee Mugs!
I think this is a great idea. These days we run into DRM everywhere, (in computers and phones obviously,) in printers, tractors, cars, garage doors, you name it. For people to be able to say no to DRM they first have to learn about how it confines them. Good initiative Chris.
