[Trisquel-users] Re : Help needed - Cannot log in trisquel after external harddisk not ejected properly

2015-09-16 Thread lcerf
I doubt the external hard drive has anything to do with your login problem.
Are you sure the keyboard layout is the same you used when you defined the
password? Can you log in a terminal? To get such a terminal, press
Ctrl+Alt+F1. You can then go back to the graphical session with Alt+F7.

Anyway, the solution amounts to getting a root terminal (without having to
input a password) where to execute 'passwd username' to redefine the password
of the user named "username" (substitute "username" with the login of the
user you cannot log).

The problem is: Trisquel makes that process harder than it should be for no
real advantage in terms of security. Trisquel should have no GRUB password
(what you get by commenting all lines in /etc/grub.d/01_PASSWORD) and
recovery mode menu entries (what you get by commenting
"GRUB_DISABLE_RECOVERY=true" in /etc/default/grub). Instead you need here to
boot a live system and 'sudo chroot' the directory where the root partition
of the installed system was mounted.

The your-freedom package prevents the installation of non-free code, and due
to deliberate conflict with non-free packages in Fedora's repos, deletes
non-free packages on a Fedora system. If you want to install proprietary
software after installing the your-freedom package, you have to remove
your-freedom.

It makes Fedora free.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Google Chrome For Trisquel

2015-09-16 Thread onpon4

As in, you can use it to make Fedora free.

> Does that mean that voluntary installation of non-free code is possible?

Voluntary installation of proprietary software is always possible. In the
case of the Freed-ora package, you could (but shouldn't!) easily reverse its
effects just by removing it, and that would make it possible to install the
proprietary firmware in Fedora's repo, if nothing else.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Google Chrome For Trisquel

2015-09-16 Thread mcz

That can make it free?
I don't understand:
installing that package does what exactly?
I have a hard time deciphering what you wrote.

What I get is that additional package makes
(or can make? what's the difference?) Fedora free.
And that when installed, it prevents the accidental installation of non-free
code.

Does that mean that voluntary installation of non-free code is possible?

You are free to study, modify and redistribute the list of dependencies the

Trisquel does not have any non-free package in its repository. The
"your-freedom" package of Freedora prevents the accidental installation of
the non-free packages in Fedora's repository (warning you that you must
remove "your-freedom" to install a non-free package). The effect is the same.

I see, thank you both for the clarification.
I personally don't care about installing non-free software,
it's just that I was told (and might have misunderstood)
that a free system can't prevent you from installing non-free software. If it
does, it's not free.

Sure you can reverse the effect by removing that package,
but to my understanding, on Trisquel both can cohabit,
that is, at the same time (which makes it a truly free system).

That's why I thought that Fedora with that package installed isn't completely
free.

But no big deal either way.

I think I got that mixed up with external installations, like from a PPA.
I mean if Fedora with that free package install
does prevent let's say a software from a PPA (that I've mistaken as fully
free),

then it's not free, is that right?

[Trisquel-users] Re : Google Chrome For Trisquel

2015-09-16 Thread lcerf
It is free. The "your-freedom" package satisfies the definition of free
software: https://gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html

It is not forced upon the user like a DRM would. The user can remove the
package or not install it in the first place. Not that I would recommend it
since it would only serve to install proprietary software that denies the
user the control of her own computing (that she deserves).

Now if the question is whether the package conflicts with any proprietary
software even outside the Fedora repository, the answer is "no". There is no
automatic way to test whether a piece of software is free. The "your-freedom"
package probably only conflicts with the non-free packages inside the Fedora
repository. Whenever software is taken from third parties, the user has to to
discover by herself whether it is free or proprietary. The same holds for
PPAs you can add to Trisquel.

And trying the "sudo update-rc.d apache2 disable" trick yet again:

update-rc.d: warning: start runlevel arguments (none) do not match apache2
Default-Start values (2 3 4 5)
update-rc.d: warning: stop runlevel arguments (none) do not match apache2

   /etc/rc4.d/K09apache2 -> ../init.d/apache2
   /etc/rc5.d/K09apache2 -> ../init.d/apache2

Which brings us full circle with Trisquel still trying to run the unwelcome
apache2.

Originally I removed apache2 with "sudo apt-get remove apache2" and "sudo
apt-get remove apache2-data" and re-running these two commands shows that
they're still "away" as in "thrown away."

Should I run "sudo apt-get purge apache2 apache2-data" ? I have no need for a
server and do not want the dubious activity of any surreptitious activation
of apache. Which is why I'm still perplexed about those blinky messages that
appear now & then on this laptop as well as on three other Trisquel 7
installations of mine. Are they telling me that Trisquel is calling the
mother ship like Windows 3.11 used to do ? I still remember hearing my modem
up and calling who-knows-whom while Windows 3.11 was sitting there on my desk
with no intervention that I knew about twenty-some years ago ...

[Trisquel-users] Re : Is there a shut down log, and where can I find it ?

2015-09-16 Thread lcerf
You can indeed purge any package with "apache2" in its name. I have no Web
server and none of those packages are installed on my system. They are not
part of the default install either. I guess you either explicitly installed
Apache or some package depending on this Web server. That is why, before
confirming the removal, you had better check whether this removal does not
trigger the removal of applications you actually use.

I do not know why the init script remained after the deletion of the
"apache2" package. Executing the following command would stop the init system
from trying to start/stop Apache:

$ sudo rm /etc/rc*/*apache2

It is about removing the symbolic links to the apache2 init script (not the
init script itself... although it should not be on your system anyway!).

Hello guys,

I was noticed about the FCC proposal of restricting wireless devices
modifications, and I decides to help stop this threat. I started a petition
in Avaaz to try to stop this bill. I also contacted the US Pirate Party for
support.

But the Chairman of the Pirates replied saying that the lock down is an
extreme fantasy, it is ignoring some of the facts, and that "The (FCC's)
position is that versions of this open source software can be used as long as
they do not add the functionality to modify the underlying operating
characteristics of the RF parameters."

I'm attaching the conversation we had, in order that you can see if our
attempts of stopping this proposal are really needed.

Sincerely,

Manuel

---
(Here starts the Chairman's mail)

Hi. I understand your concerns. However I've been in contact with the
FCC (back from when I started the Net Neutrality thing) as have others
I've talked to, and the basic answer is that NO, they're not trying to
lock down devices.

A lot of what you've been told is extreme fantasy and is not based int
he realities - I'll bet you've not even been told that this whole thing
is just a proposal right now, and that the FCC is taking public comments
for the next few weeks (until october 8)
http://apps.fcc.gov/ecfs/proceeding/view?name=15-170

And of course, the FCC's own statement is "The (FCC's) position is that
versions of this open source software can be used as long as they do not
add the functionality to modify the underlying operating characteristics
of the RF parameters."

Basically, they admit their statements are badly worded.

Mike Masnick at Techdirt has a better writeup than I could,
https://www.techdirt.com/blog/wireless/articles/20150831/07164532118/no-fcc-is-not-intentionally-trying-to-kill-third-party-wi-fi-router-firmware.shtml

The bottom line though is that the 'fears' are overblown hysteria, that
is as likely to make things worse as improve them, because no matter how
well intentioned they may be, they're deliberately ignoring some of the
facts.

of the country it is in. For instance, here are two applications that aim to
ease the administration of a French association:

Are we talking about two internal drives? If so, do not worry: the last
installed distribution will populate GRUB's configuration with all available
systems. I am not sure what happens with a USB external drive.

By the way: Gentoo can be 100% free. Not by default though. You need the
"deblob" keyword in the USE variable and ACCEPT_LICENSE="@FSF-APPROVED
@FSF-APPROVED-OTHER". All that can be defined in /etc/make.conf.

[Trisquel-users] Installing Trisquel and gentoo on another drive, grub required?.

2015-09-16 Thread kaptcha
Hi I already got trisquel installed on a drive and I would like to try gentoo
on another drive, I m very new to linux and I need to check some details
first; this new drive requires installation of grub?. Or, otherwise the grub
that I see at the beginning when I turn on my computer will be able to
recognize and load gentoo previously installed on this new drive?.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Trisquel and gentoo on another drive, grub required?.

2015-09-16 Thread GNUtoo
I always have huge doubts regarding the quality/extensiveness of the effects
of "100% free" settings on non-free distros:
What guarantee me that they go as far as Trisquel and parabola with packages
content?

I guess that they use the ebuild LICENSE, but will using the "deblob" USE
flag change iceweasel in iceweasel-libre, blacklist non-free dependencies and
ajust the other USE flags accordingly, and prevent the suggestion of non-free
programs, including in the manuals? both require patching the programs.

I personally fear two things:
-> Be mislead and install non-free software without knowing that it's
non-free, that's why I need the suggestion issue fixed on all the repos I
use. I don't know all software well so I very strongly prefer to trust the
distro to do it correctly instead. Suggestion is so vague that it could also
be in form of a package manager (firefox, iceweasel) or as a dialog "would
you want to download " with some cryptic language.

-> That part of a package is non-free.

That said Gentoo seem very interesting. I am very attracted by the
possibilities of customization, but I probably don't have the computing power
to use it, and I'm waiting for a free version to give a try again.

The downside is that, "verifiable builds" wound probably not come any time
soon due to the huge number of possible combinations when building gentoo.

Denis.

Re: [Trisquel-users] MacBook 1,1 to Libreboot in software way

2015-09-16 Thread GNUtoo

There is a huge fear about BIOS rootkits.

So until recently, the idea was that the device's BIOS had to implement, in
software, ways to make sure that only official BIOSes could be reflashed via
software.

In practice, some BIOS don't have any "protection" against reflashing, which
is good for us.

Some other have various degrees of protection. I think they can all be
broken, but some are BIOS specific, so it requires some work.

Because the software protection didn't hold, some vendors now use code
signing at the hardware level, so the hardware (The CPU) won't load any code
not signed by the device manufacturer.

Here you can see a conflict between freedom, and preventing (additional)
rootkits in proprietary software.

A very similar conflict is present for bootloaders of Android phones, where
permitting to load your own bootloader would permit to rootkit the phone, and
easily access all the data inside it because you load your code before the
OS.

I think we should try to find good solutions so the chip and device
manufacturer, freedom, and security of users using the default software would
go well together.

Denis.

[Trisquel-users] Re : Installing Trisquel and gentoo on another drive, grub required?.

2015-09-16 Thread lcerf
You are right. ebuilds fetch source codes from the sites of their respective
authors. As far as I know, Gentoo does not maintain patches to apply to those
source codes. As a consequence, programs that raise subtle issues (such as
those listed at
http://libreplanet.org/wiki/List_of_software_that_does_not_respect_the_Free_System_Distribution_Guidelines
) would probably be installed unaltered despite the settings I mentioned. If
the problematic parts of the software can be disabled at compile/build time,
then there may be a keyword to append to USE to do so. "deblob" plays this
role for the kernel only.

As for verifiable builds, I do not see the necessity given that a user of
Gentoo receives source codes (minus the blobs) that she compiles on her own
system.

Reply to his email and tell him the article gets a lot of things wrong,
quotes people who haven't fully understood the issue, and makes or implies
false claims about the campaign. Let him know that he should contact the josh
at the FSF if he wants the full scoop. Or get on the mailing list.

The author gets a lot of things wrong. He NEVER talked to the Save Wifi
project or the people who are actively investigating this issue which
includes software developers like Adrian Luis (who *actually* worked on some
of the impacted device chipsets), manufacturers, multiple Qualcomm employees
current and ex, the FSF, the EFF, lawyers involved in prior FCC regulations,
OpenWRT developers, LibreCMC developers, mesh networking groups, and others.
The people the author interviewed for the story were inappropriate, wrong,
and did little more than make good sound bytes for the story backing up the
impression being presented that it was a non-issue.

Is it a proposal? Yes. That entirely misses the point though. You don't wait
until its passed to fight it. It becomes an near-impossible fight to win at
that point. If you don't want to fight the proposed rules fine. But what do
you have to say about the rules which have already in place now? Should we
ignore those too and pretend it isn't an issue? Pretending this is a
non-issue or outright ignoring it won't result in a solution to the problem.

The FCC's stated 'position' is irrelevant if the rules for manufacturers are
resulting in the locking down of devices. What the FCC is doing is 'double
talk'. Within the same quote the FCC has indicated that they both don't care
if there is third party firmware loaded, but then goes on to state as long as
it complies with the rules, which ultimately is why you can't load the third
party firmware. The way the rules are manufacturers will institute digital
locks and are *already* doing so. In the very quotes within that article form
one of the technical people quoted they admit to there being a problem still
AND nobody ever said there were *only* proposed rules that are a problem.
It's a much bigger issue.
