Re: [Trisquel-users] What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?
Cinnamon.panels never disappear when I have Impress start a presentation (at least with presenter view on) MATE.I can't get shadows to appear under MATE's panel, but it's otherwise OK Trisquel-6-&-7 GNOME.I wouldn't mind it if I couldn't debootstrap GNOME Classic as provided by GNOME...it'd be a bit of a revamp compared to previous Trisquel editions, but would that be such a bad thing? Red Hat GNOME..that'd be lovely judjing by the screenshots I've seen of it. I've never tried it though. KDE4Too heavy KDE5.I heard it's lighter than KDE4?
[Trisquel-users] Personal Digital Assistant
Hey all, Do any of you use a PDA anymore? I wish to have something of that sort, preferably with a stylus so I can write on it. Something I can sync up to the computer and keep a calendar, and maybe even access e-mail on. I know there are loads of Android devices, but I really don't like Android, it's a gimmicky OS. I'm looking for something a bit more professional minded. Plus I'd rather not have anything associated with the great Evil, Google. Anyways, I had been looking into Palm and Pocket PC devices, but most GNU/Linux projects associated to those devices are dead. Anyways, Thanks for your time. grimlok
Re: [Trisquel-users] What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?
I like XFCE, definitely!on my debian.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?
Windows XP
Re: [Trisquel-users] Personal Digital Assistant
If you are ok with a total free Android look at this: http://92.19.232.58:5/html/shop/phones/index.php they sell smartphones with Replicant preinstalled. (they will donate atleast 20% of the profist. (They told me that in an e-mail.)
[Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
Hello we are saving vhs and sd Tv. I wanted to ask what converter tool (should keep original resolution) and what format I should choose. There are two requirements. 1. The tool must be easy to use, my parents aren’t that good in using a computer. 2. That tool must be windows compatible, I can´t find a way for getting the tv cards running, and the chinch to usb converter isn´t Linux compatible.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?
Maybe we could make a more multimedia friendly version. Directly start kodi, maybe a very simple DE underneath. There isn´t a free multimedia distri out there.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is foxyproxy libre?
Hi Iru! There are differing views. The FSF is concerned whether the code and documentation are free, so depending on whether the docu is bundled, they might call it free. Ironically the Debian project which distributes proprietary software requires that also media be under free licenses to be placed into Debian main repository. (On the other hand anything goes as long as it's legal to distribute in their non-free repo.) I personally think protecting the name makes sense and I believe there are FSF approved free software licenses which have a clause forbidding the use of the name or another misleading very similar name. Ditto the logo, Mozilla products famously do this, hence e.g. abrowser on Trisquel (and iceweasel on Debian). Not liberating the graphics and especially the documentation are poor choices if you ask me. Perhaps somebody could have a friendly chat with the author. Probably would change nothing however...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Personal Digital Assistant
I never used a PDA so I can't answer your actual question. I guess a (second hand) PDA might be a decent compromise between a phone and a "smartphone". Looks like there is some palm related software in the repos.apt-cache search palm|sort|grep -i palm I once considered getting a NanoNote for the job. (no stylus there) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NanoNote
Re: [Trisquel-users] Personal Digital Assistant
hmm...Isn't the owner tomlukeywood from the forum? https://trisquel.info/en/users/tomlukeywood You should definitely consider supporting him.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
The software would need to convert Mpeg2 and ts files (optionally h.246) in a better compression ratio.
[Trisquel-users] Is foxyproxy libre?
Hi, I'm searching for a libre proxy switching plugin for my browser. I have been using foxyproxy for a long time, but I don't know if it's libre. I found foxyproxy on a Trisquel page: http://trisquel.info/en/browser/addons/foxyproxy-standard-0 However, I read foxy's FAQ: https://getfoxyproxy.org/mozilla/faq.html#hidden and found this: Under what license is FoxyProxy released? The FoxyProxy source code is released under the GPL license. The FoxyProxy name, logo, graphics, art work, website, styles, and documentation are proprietary works and are NOT open-source. So I don't think it a 100% free software. What do you think? Iru
Re: [Trisquel-users] What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?
I like Cinnamon,if only for its straightforwardness. I think XFCE would be fine though.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What CPU to buy
Good upgrade then,enjoy.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?
I would prefer GNOME Shell. I know it's a bit heavy, but it's much nicer than GNOME Flashback or MATE. I'm pretty sure Cinnamon would be out of the question because of hardware requirements, and I think Xfce and LXDE may also be out of the question for the main distribution because of a lack of accessibility support (Ruben goes to lengths to ensure that Trisquel is as accessible as possible).
Re: [Trisquel-users] What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?
Mate desktop or Deepin desktop. There is a version of Manjaro with this desktop. Look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TiuI3bsNm4
Re: [Trisquel-users] What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?
if Depin DE is free software looks awesome what DE is it based on?
Re: [Trisquel-users] asus/kfsn4-dre libreboot
According to http://libreboot.org/faq/#external-gpu it seems that the nonfree VBIOS might already be on in the ROM of the graphics card. Seabios will just execute it blindly. If the payload was GRUB, then this proprietary blob should be included when compiling coreboot.

[Trisquel-users] Re : How to Switch to Trisquel from Trisquel Mini?
If you not only want Trisquel's interface but also Trisquel's default applications, then install the "trisquel-recommended" package too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?
Agreed, asking for the best default DE for the next version and asking for your favorite setup is really not the same. For weaker machines, there's Trisquel Mini. Or a minimal netinstall. Accessibility must be there for both the default and Mini version I suppose. From there, there's the 3D accel thing. Maybe there's a way to detect if it's supported, and go on with the install accordingly. My favorite setup ? I like i3wm : very fast, light, and plain text configuration files (easy to modify). And Openbox the way Crunchbang sets it up is nice and fast for a more classic appearance/use.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Which is more secure, peazip or Gnupg?
I have no experience with PeaZip but I imagine (and can be wrong!) its encryption feature is made for a totally different scenario than GPG's. Isn't PeaZip's encryption based on a passphrase that must somehow (a GPG-encrypted mail?!) be send to whoever needs to open the archive? On the contrary, with GPG, I believe you encrypt the message (any message: a file, compressed or not, an email, etc.) with the public key of a specific user who is the only one who will be able to read it (nothing more needs to be send to her). I also guess that the encryption that specifically targets a compressed format must be faster. And in scenario where several users needs to open the archive, they can all share the passphrase for one single encryption.
[Trisquel-users] Retroshare
Hello, Has anyone there tried Retroshare? What do you think of it? I am thinking of trying it, but wanted to ask first.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?
I do want to chime in and say that I seriously doubt GNOME Flashback is in any substantial way slower than, say, LXDE. I actually set up my mother's computer with Trisquel Mini for a brief period to see if it made her system run smoother, and she didn't notice a difference, so I changed it back. That computer has an Intel Pentium 4 with some ATI integrated graphics controller (no hardware acceleration whatsoever). I don't know how much RAM it has, but I want to say it's either 1 GB or 2 GB. I've seen an analysis of some kind that found that out of MATE, LXDE, and Xfce, Xfce used the most RAM, followed by LXDE, followed by MATE. Given this and the fact that LXDE isn't noticeably faster than GNOME Fallback on my mother's computer, I tend to suspect that the common belief in LXDE and Xfce being better for lower-end hardware than GNOME Flashback or MATE is a myth. One more point which has already been made elsewhere, but is worth repeating: GNOME Shell does not require hardware acceleration to run. Hardware acceleration is definitely beneficial, but if it's unavailable, it can run entirely in software thanks to some work by the Fedora developers. I haven't tried it, personally, but I tend to suspect that most multi-core CPUs would handle the load reasonably well.
Re: [Trisquel-users] At times, Trisquel website goes off-line.
I don't think it's very cool for you to act or talk that way. The operating system is free. Access to the community site / forum is free. The support and help you get is free. Yet, it cost money to run and maintain the website. It costs money to pay for the web hosting and or web server. I wouldn't bite the hand that feeds you.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?
@tomlukeywood Deepin desktop is a html5 tehnologie and is not based on other desktop. It is from Linux Deepin distribution.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?
I like Gnome 3 Shell. It looks very modern, and has software rendering for those who can't run free GPU drivers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?
Yes, accessibility should be in the default and mini, though, I'd also like to see it in the net install. Debian has offered this for quite a while.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?
Last time I triede them, LXDE and XFCE panels and desktops were inaccessible, though their menus are. If Trisquel 8 is to have a desktop like this GNOME Fallback, Mate is the way to go. It is very accessible in Debian and Ubuntu. Last time I tried installing Mate in Trisquel 7, I could not get the applets to show up; may try again, following instructions more carefully.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?
>The GNOME Fallback is indeed, heavy and eats up quite a lot of memory I ran TRisquel default iso with gnome fallback or flashback whatever it is called on an atom with 1 gb ram. It was fast and smooth. Indeed I reckon it is my third favorite DE after the perfect Xfce and the awesome Mate. It did have some issues though on that atom with integrated Intel GPU and video acceleration. I experienced weird screen flashing on the top and left border of the screen while viewing photos in eye of the gnome (I think that was the application) and the gthumb and others I tried. I recommend you purge compton if your lappy is very slow.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?
Gnome Shell
Re: [Trisquel-users] What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?
The modified gnome-fallback desktop Trisquel is using is very good. It is compatible with unity indicators which provides extra functionality and low resources are necessary to its functionality.

[Trisquel-users] Totally Libre Version of Chromium?
Hi. I am interested in running Chromium in Trisquel, but saw that it isn't in the repos. I read this post http://trisquel.info/en/forum/chromium-web-browser-freelibre I am curious though. Is there a 100% libre version of Chromium something similar to what abrowser is for Firefox? If there isn't a 100% free current package out there of Chromium, could you please tell how to download the Chromium code, rip out the non-free parts, and then create a new libre version of Chromium? Also, is there also a way to have 100% free extensions in Chromium without having to install them from Google? Thank you.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Masalla Icon Theme now under GPL3+
Your English is not clear. Is your name Hayder Majid or Hayder Ctee? Does "eng." mean you are an enginner? Is Massalla the name of an obelisk in a city named Hammurabi? Anyway, here is a translation in French: Masalla est un thème d'icônes dessiné par Hayder Majid (Hayder Ctee). :-)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Masalla Icon Theme now under GPL3+
Your English is perfectly clear to me. Here the Italian translation attached. odt file.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Masalla Icon Theme now under GPL3+
In fact, let me retranslate to English what I wrote in French. In this way you can check whether it is OK and maybe substitute the English description. Here it is: Masalla is an icon theme designed by Hayder Majid (Hayder Ctee). The theme follows the last trend in flat design. An obelisk (the obelisk of Hammurabi in Iraq) gave its name to the project. The icons are distributed under the terms of the GNU GPL version 3 or any later version. How to install: 1. Extract (with administrative permissions) the zip file into "/usr/share/icons"; 2. Choose the icon theme "Masalla" from the "System settings"; 3. Enjoy and be free! :-)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Masalla Icon Theme now under GPL3+
Thank you ^_^ can anyone translate the description to french language and other languages please ?
Re: [Trisquel-users] What CPU to buy
Thanks! I bought asus gtx770, which is much more powerful and I can do a higher reclock. (first you need some voltage fixes in nouveau.ko and later put it in latest kernel and recompile it, later do update-initramfs) From: 07: core 405 MHz memory 648 MHz To: 0f: core 1050 MHz memory 7010 MHz GTX770 it is a much better option that any Intel GPU.

Re: [Trisquel-users] What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?
lap4fsf, if GNOME flashback is heavy for your PC, you're running a potato and should be using Trisquel Mini. I think GNOME shell would be a good choice (with the option of flahsback if the user lacks 3D acceleration)-- it's simple, user-friendly, modern, and is touch-screen-friendly. Touch-screens are all the rage now. Or was that a couple years ago?
Re: [Trisquel-users] What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Masalla Icon Theme now under GPL3+
Greetings, here you have the translation to Spanish :) I've installed the theme and I have to say that that was one of the most elegant themes I've ever seen, congratulations. I'm sorry to say that I found your English a little bit difficult to understand sometimes but the communication is not broken so is perfectly fine for me (my English is a little bit worse than yours so I know how it feels). I hope this is useful.

for me MATE its tru Gnome 2
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to Switch to Trisquel from Trisquel Mini?
Thank you two both for the responses. I went ahead and reinstalled since I just installed it yesterday on Virtualbox. Out of curiosity though; what would have been the steps to install the trisquel package rather than wipe and reinstall and start from scratch?
[Trisquel-users] Re : Totally Libre Version of Chromium?
The problem is not only to remove invitations to proprietary software (the main difference between Firefox and Abrowser). See the "Blocked on" list on the left sides of https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=28291 and https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=28287
[Trisquel-users] Re : How to Switch to Trisquel from Trisquel Mini?
You just needed to install the package lembas indicated and, optionally, the one I indicated. There are several ways to do so. For instance through the "Synaptic package manager" (in the "System settings") or with the following command line: $ sudo apt-get install trisquel trisquel-recommended You can then log out your graphical session and choose at the connection screen the "Trisquel session" (an icon at the right of the user name). Very easy. What is more difficult is to remove the applications that came with Trisquel Mini. But you do not "have to".
Re: [Trisquel-users] What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?
My preferences: 1) Gnome Fallback 2) MATE 3) XFCE 4) Gnome Shell or KDE 5 5) Others
Re: [Trisquel-users] Broken my VPN and Tor (and my connection)
I have wifi now. Thankfully, I didn't reinstall a thing. I just modified the content of the interfaces file according to what the text install asks for (wpa-psk). and something about avahi-daemon, which I told not to start at boot anymore (wlan0 avahi appeared on ifconfig). Now, The problem is, now the nohwcrypt option is either up or down 'it has to be on 1), and I can't find info on it. Also, now when I plug an external hard drive, or when I launch bitmask, I'm prompted for my pass phrase. Never happend before this incident. The other problem is, I don't know what the hell happened ?? Initially, I modified the interfaces file according to the KVM tutorial, which f***ed my connection up. So I removed and put back the ath9K driver and for some reason I was forced to modify the nohwcrypt option. And I had to bypass my hardware wifi switch which is f***ing unreliable.
[Trisquel-users] Re : What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?
A thread where we will see one more time that every single advanced user has his/her own favorite desktop... what does not help the choice of a default. Anyway, those advanced users know how to change the default. And non-advanced users have not tested enough options to make an educated choice. I would like to see GNOME Shell as Trisquel's default. Because it is both "nice and simple" (hence good for newcomers, imho) and "extensible and productive" (see respectively http://extensions.gnome.org and http://wiki.gnome.org/GnomeShell/CheatSheet for justifications). MATE probably is a good choice for Trisquel Mini. It is accessible and light for today's standard. Xfce may be an option too. I am not sure: I have not used it in years.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Make Mupen64 work faster
I know :) But since the tablet already has blobs installed and can't even function without them, i think we could at least make use of it (hoping to one day get Replicant gaming machine ^_^). you mentioned something about "if a computer can play an emulator+rom, it can probably play other games with same or better graphics". And I have been thinking, the use of emulators+roms for me is a "last resort" solution, because I don't want to install proprietary games, AND modern libre games are not made thinking about low spec machines. Emulating a machine that already had low specs, but the game creators used to maximum potential actually allows to play some interesting games that I wouldn't be able to find a proper "clone" in the free/libre world to run in my machine. Does it make sense? :P
Re: [Trisquel-users] What DE do you prefer for Trisquel 8?
I vote "using the exact same DE we have in Trisquel 7". It works splendidly and is not too much heavy (I have a single core CPU, no 3d acceleration and still get a nice performance out of it). If it is not an option, I hope MATE but Nautilus should replace Caja. C'mon, we have dozens of plugins in Nautilus ready to be installed in synaptic, we can using those do everything in nautilus with a single right click. Caja is still very much behind in that department.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Which is more secure, peazip or Gnupg?
While I understand where you are coming from with this, I have to say that using GPG has never been easier. You can now download a GPG file from https (which is something everyone knows how to do, just click the file and save it) right click and choose "import key". Do the same with the file and respective signature, and you are good to go. Right click, everything works great. As for email, there is still some idea that "we just need to remember the password". Well, it certainly requires a lot of work to change that but once a person WANTS to use it, it's already very easy, nearly automatic. That being said, I still have some issues using email encryption myself, and can't convince most people to use it. But what I said holds true, encryption is now easier than ever.
