Re: [Trisquel-users] CDE -- Common Desktop Environment
As time passes, old is new again. Fads come and go but the basic desktop metaphor (which CDE is) remains. All else is icing on the cake. Would love to see somebody making a CDE packaging for a distro so that it could be optional when installing the system.
Re: [Trisquel-users] CDE -- Common Desktop Environment
So far, yes-- until I get bored. I'll definitely come back to this again if need be now that I know how to do it. CDE is basically like Xfce 3 or Solaris. After all, it's only a skin. Underhood, it's a modern OS (in this case Debian powered GNU/Linux). You have all the software out there plus what you can find for the CDE system (native programs seem to start with a 'dt' every one of them. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xfce#Early_versions

Re: [Trisquel-users] Quickest and easiest way to rip a DVD straight to .iso
Yes, I know. I'm talking of the general advice because dd is not a general-purpose ISO-making program so I am throwing that caution out there for people.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Quickest and easiest way to rip a DVD straight to .iso
We are talking about "rip[ping] a DVD straight to .iso". /dev/sda is not a DVD.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Quickest and easiest way to rip a DVD straight to .iso
"The ISO is the bit for bit data on the disk" Not exactly. It's supposed to be an ISO 9660 file system. So dd if=/dev/sda of=hdd.iso would not be an ISO image (because /dev/sda for me is ext4.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_9660
[Trisquel-users] Re : If you could go back in time and talk to your former "owned" self
How do you deal with not having a smartphone in your daily life? Very well, thank you. I'm really interested to hear your (and others) real-life experience, and cases where you miss having one You do not miss what you have never owned. That said, the moment where I recognize a cell phone would be convenient is when I get lost (I am terrible at orientation) and when I am late (to warn whoever waits for me). The two situations often usually are combined. Also, some people are mad at me, because they want to warn me that they are going to be late or because they want to change plans at the last minute, but cannot contact me. Emergency contacts with friends and family? Everybody asks me that. In 33 years, I have never had to make an emergency call. Maybe I am lucky. But I spend most of my time at home (with a land line) and at the university (with a land line too). If in the street, there would usually be people around. With cell phones. And public phones still work (I must be the last one to use them, rarely though). So, I do not see many situations where I could save a life with a cell phone... Agenda reminders? Taking notes? All in my laptop. I work on my laptop. Playing chess? I do not play chess. Alarm clock? Rockbox (the free operating system for my music player) has an alarm clock. I connect the player to a speaker I put on my bedside table and wakes up every morning with a playlist that I specially made for this purpose. What if you don't sleep at home but you need to wake up? I have my laptop with me, let it on, and install a crontab (here to wake up at 8am): DISPLAY=:0 0 8 * * * rhythmbox-client --play Various timers? For sport, cooking... There is a clock in the kitchen. And sports, well, I do not do any. I should... Music player? You answered that one, but the downside is having to use one more item instead of just one. Again, I only carry the Sansa Clip Zip: it is tiny and can be clipped on your pocket. Very convenient. And Rockbox simply is great: http://rockbox.org Web? E-mail? The laptop. My wife complains that I spend too much time on that forum already! Calculator? There is a Rockbox application for that. But the Sansa Clip Zip is not made to be used as a calculator (arrows to move from a key to another). Anyway, I do not really need a calculator unless I am working on my computer, where I sometimes use enhanced "calculators" such as Scilab or Maxima! Well, in pubs and restaurants, there always is the famous division to make but since everybody (but me) has a smartphone, I do not take care of those calculations. Anyway, since, usually, I am as well the only one paying cash, I just pay "the rest" at the end (in Brazil, tips are included in the check).
[Trisquel-users] Re : I want Unity without VirtualBox. Proprietary scope.
Updating fundamental libraries can create issue. If you want to live on the cutting edge, try Parabola (a rolling release) rather than Trisquel. Freenet probably is out of Trisquel's repository because upstream (i.e., Ubuntu) does not have it either. It does not mean it raises freedom issues (I do not think it does). I do not know why Tomboy was excluded. Notice that Tomboy is programmed in C#, a technology patented by Microsoft. It is not, per se, a freedom issue but puts the program at risks.
[Trisquel-users] Re : I want Unity without VirtualBox. Proprietary scope.
mpg321 is free software. It is in Trisquel's repository. But it does not have the dependencies (nor the recommended packages) you mention. You know you had better use the package manager, right?

You can install an older kernel (what matters for hardware support) on Trisquel 7. https://jxself.org/linux-libre/ has Linux-libre 3.4.
Re: [Trisquel-users] If you could go back in time and talk to your former "owned" self
I will say that personally, I do still use a smart phone (no Google, only f-droid stuff) but that is part a requirement of my job and secondly - this is one point where I am directly trading privacy for convenience. Having a phone in an emergency situation (it has happened before) was literally a life saver. I understand that relationship and the issues of these devices but sometimes you have to make the personal choice of what means the most to you. I do not endorse these things but I am somewhat forced into the position of using them, I hope it isn't forever.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Quickest and easiest way to rip a DVD straight to .iso
The ISO is the bit for bit data on the disk. 'dd' applies: $ dd if=/dev/sr0 of=dvd.iso

Firefox's EME support is implemented as a plugin. TBB disables all plugins. Also, I think you're taking the responsibility of setting up a program to work safely with Tor too lightly.

Why not something like Cinnamon, which has a "natural" GNOME Shell layout and a fallback mode at the same time? Or Xfce.

You need not compile from source. The Unity Tweak Tool allows you to turn off the online features of Dash, the search function. See https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-install-unity-desktop-environment-and-create-session-entry-trisquel-70

Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
I really like GNOME Fallback however I understand the complains. But one can do something about it. Let me explain: GNOME Fallback (as in Trisquel 7) Pros: + Similar layout to Windows, easy to switch / get used to + doesn't depend on hardware-accelerated graphics (think about libreboot users) + supports access for handicapped people + stable, around for a long time + since it's GNOME (popular) many dependencies for other programs are already included GNOME Fallback (as in Trisquel 7) Cons: - No searchable menus / app search - No switchables users by default - (there are probably more) So I sugged sticking with GNOME Fallback but also including software like Cardapio (better integrated, without the internet-search stuff included for privacy, probably needs some work) for the menu and replacing the default menu, adding at least 2 seats in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf by default, so ctrl+alt+f8 works and 2 users / accounts can be logged in at the same time. Some minor changes (like making Windows-button open the menu by default) would also make an easier experience. I think with just a bit of work, GNOME Fallback could be the perfect balance between all requirements. As it is now, it's a little bit too dusty.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Tor Browser Bundle: DRM deleted or not?

I compiled IceCat many times, and I won. I just wanted to include my (test) EV CA and certificate. I need to write my changes to text file and check new versions for new DRM. I hate DRM and I need to remove this. I will be starting the work soon. I need to check all code.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Tor Browser Bundle: DRM deleted or not?
Torbutton just proxies traffic through Tor, which is not enough to give you anonymity. TBB blocks code execution, so that would include the DRM schemes. Tor Browser Bundle connects through Tor. You probably shouldn't use it for anything else. It will be too much work to just download it to remove the "bad words" (presumably you mean compiling from source). Its development progresses at such a quick rate that you might forget to get the newer version, or compile it wrong or something. You are being too particular about this. If FSF was a Church you would be a zealous defender of the faith.
Re: [Trisquel-users] If you could go back in time and talk to your former "owned" self
Then I would bring Ubuntu MATE back in time with me, I suppose.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Tor Browser Bundle: DRM deleted or not?
If I port Torbutton to my browser and install NoScript, I can get all TBB security? If not: IceCat is Firefox, but ONLY DRM removed and URL's/copyrights changed to GNU? If yes, I will download TBB and remove code lines with "DRM", "EME" and other bad words for personal use.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Tor Browser Bundle: DRM deleted or not?
Tor Browser Bundle is configured so that you do not reveal your identity by mistake. It is very easy to do, most people have revealed their identity without knowing. You might think "these browsers are libre, they make me anonymous" but they still reveal things that are unique, like system fonts, screen orientation, unique browser text string identifier, operating system, etc. They may not connect through Tor correctly too. It is not a warning you should take lightly. If you want Tor, use TorBB: https://www.torproject.org/download/download-easy.html.en#warning Or don't use it at all. Seriously, nefarious types watch Tor users, and revealing your identity can sometimes be very damaging. For example, someone set up a Tor exit node as an experiment, and picked up sensetive, unencrypted communications from governments and UN personelle. You might make a similar mistake. Who knows? Use Tor Browser Bundle or don't use it at all.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I want Unity without VirtualBox. Proprietary scope.
It is libre, and in my opinion kind of crap, but the data-collection is a turn-off, but as long as you use it right then there is no harm. Whatever, it is your computer.

How do you deal with not having a smartphone in your daily life? Here's a weird auto Q where I try to answer to my own questions, but I'm really interested to hear your (and others) real-life experience, and cases where you miss having one : Emergency contacts with friends and family? Well, they're probably better off calling professionals (firefighters, police etc.), but still. What about making the call yourself, if needed? That's a tougher one. Agenda reminders? Taking notes? Ok, root_vegetable suggested a paper version. This could work for me, although it's a bit annoying. I'd need to have a bag with me at all times. Or not, If I use super small items. Playing chess? Better play at home, focused. Alarm clock? Just have a dedicated one. What if you don't sleep at home but you need to wake up? There are probably easy ways, but not as convenient. Various timers? For sport, cooking... Again, possible to have a dedicated item. And on the go, it's possible 'and welcomed) to train without a timer once in a while. Music player? You answered that one, but the downside is having to use one more item instead of just one. Web? E-mail? At home, at work, a wifi hotspot. Calculator? Fingers. Just kidding (well, partly...).
Re: [Trisquel-users] I want Unity without VirtualBox. Proprietary scope.
Ok. I will install KDE, not Unity.
Re: [Trisquel-users] If you could go back in time and talk to your former "owned" self
Thanks, I'm definitely going to consider a good old paper agenda. With a few good habits, I can check it every morning, noon etc. and work my memory instead of using the smartphone's. I can play games when the phone is on. I can get a simple alarm clock instead of using my phone. And on the go, I'd still have the smartphone to replace all that (except the paper agenda). The alternative is to use a Replicant smartphone in Airplane mode most of the time. The reasoning is that "unproven bad modem isolation" is actually something to consider: http://redmine.replicant.us/boards/33/topics/7383 "On the other hand, if it is only connected to the SoC through a dedicated channel, it has to rely upon the SoC's cooperation to access more hardware. This requires an explicit cooperation from the software running on the CPU. I don't see any way for the modem to use a weakness in Samsung-RIL to access more features." "Good modem isolation is enough to ensure that the modem doesn't gain further hardware access. However, since free hardware doesn't exist yet, it is very hard to actually know for sure how isolated the modem really is." This makes the data on the phone relatively safe. But since it's not a 100% proof, it's better to keep the data inside not too personal. Boring agenda entries should be ok. even quick notes. The downside: Airplane mode isn't enough to stop tracking I think (even though it's good enough for airplanes). And removing the battery removes the advantage of the agenda. The question is: do I care this much about tracking? I don't like it, but i don't care that much. Yet the Airplane mode doesn't feel satisfying. Well, only one choice left.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Tor Browser Bundle: DRM deleted or not?
use torbb.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Tor Browser Bundle: DRM deleted or not?
It does not really matter. It is not ideal, but Tor Browser is designed to "blend in" and act like Firefox on Windows, while blocking really nasty stuff around the internet. So don't use it if you are overly concerned about it, do if you want reasonable anonymity.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Let's make our forums safer
Let's put it another way. Let's consider a malicious URL. Does it matter if the URL I share is from a safe search engine results page? No, because as soon as you click on the that URL, eventually you'll end up on the page anyway by clicking on the malicious URL. A bottle of poison shared in a (supposedly) safe box doesn't change a thing. It's up to you to check whether the box is worth opening, or if you have taken your anti-poison beforehand. As for free search engines, duckduckgo, startpage and ixquick are supposedly better than google and co. But it's still a service on someone else's server. Searx is a meta search engine that collects the query results from several engines, and filters the data about yourself. Or something like that, I'm not too sure actually. You can install this on your own server. But you can also use trusted servers, which technically doesn't make it much different than other search engines. But yeah, a URL is just a URL. There's no way to make it safer besides using https-everywhere yourself, and thus sharing https links automatically (except those websites that don't have https).
[Trisquel-users] Tor Browser Bundle: DRM deleted or not?
I using Tor with IceCat. But Tor Project recommends Tor Browser Bundle. I not know about DRM in this browser. I can use this browser or better way is continue using IceCat? P. S. It is "media.eme.*" config settings in IceCat and Abrowser. It is DRM? I forgot, but I think, it is "media.gmp-eme.*" in Tor Browser.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I want Unity without VirtualBox. Proprietary scope.
If unity is in the repository then go ahead and install it, but of course remember that Unity has privacy issues. See https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-install-unity-desktop-environment-and-create-session-entry-trisquel-70 As for the other packages you mention, they may not be included for various reasons. Perhaps they weren't in Ubuntu at the time. Who knows.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Let's make our forums safer
Oh, so the link is supposed to not take you directly to the targeted page, but through starpage? But: 2.- The proxy won't save information about you, won't install cookies, will disable many trackers. Maybe, but the target URL most likely will. As for https, either check the URL by rewriting it instead of clicking it on (I might be wrong, but this matters only if Javascript is enabled). Or simply use https-everywhere. Same for censorship, use a VPN or Tor. To me, the proxy matters when you access the URL. A URL that leads to a search engine results page is just one more useless step, if I get this right. The URL is just an adress, like a home adress. HOW you reach the adress matters, but that's up to the user, not the URL (which is always the same, eventually).

Re: [Trisquel-users] CDE -- Common Desktop Environment
those icons... yuck
Re: [Trisquel-users] I want Unity without VirtualBox. Proprietary scope.
Don't be so... zealous. It reminds me of the person who wanted to delete "libdrm" which was direct rendering manager. If it is in the Trisquel repositories, it is free software, except on occasion where the "de-blobbing" of certain packages goes slightly wrong, e.g. certain firmware packages. The Virtualbox packages are so that Trisquel can be optimised for use in Virtualbox. Just because it is not in the Trisquel repository does not mean that we can't support people using Virtualbox to use Trisquel, e.g. in Windows. It is only as bad as making free software for Windows (which is a good thing, as it helps people to transition to free software).

Re: [Trisquel-users] does it make the raspberry pi 3 a free software computer?
It's possible to make the Beaglebone Black boot with only free software, if you don't use the 3D acceleration. It runs Das U-Boot, and all of the drivers and firmware (other than for 3D acceleration and some other stuff regarding audio encoding if I remember correctly) is free software, because it runs on a TI OMAP. The designs for the TI OMAP chips are also freely available. I'd hasten a guess that it is one of the most free computers widely available. I might get one to play around with.

Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
This is to an extent true, but computers designed for Windows Vista (some of them have in excess of 1-2GoB of RAM) generally can handle GNOME Shell if they are Intel computers. It's true that computers designed for XP and earlier are generally better for something more lightweight though. This should be Xfce in my opinion. It is much more accomplished and has many more features than GNOME Panel. It is also has more active development, and the releases add tangible new features. LXDE is lightweight, but I do not know of any older computer that cannot handle Xfce (mostly because I use window managers with such computers, I have not tried Xfce on really old computers circa 1999).

The application menus don't show all the applications; things like the Tweak Tool and Synaptic don't show up, and the settings are weird. It doesn't offer much advantage over Xfce. GNOME Shell is really easy to use. It looks great on most computers and it is designed with new computer users in mind. I know it got a backlash from the people who liked GNOME 2, and to be fair it was kind of crap when it was first released, but it has really improved. It is so easy a child can use it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Let's make our forums safer
