You are misrepresenting my advice to the OP. My advice was to avoid
absolutist thinking and cognitive dissonance--i.e. 'forced to', 'cisco or
flipping burgers' and so on.

Nowhere did I say, or even imply, that starvation was an option.

Nobody, not even rms, thinks a person should die before they should develop
nonfree software (steal yes, die no). But I wasn't suggesting that the OP
steal either. I was simply questioning what sounded to me like it may be
cognitive dissonance.

The OP is not the first person to put things in these terms:
Watch between 1:16:15 and 1:21:10 of the following video, it is the very
first question of the Q:

https://audio-video.gnu.org/video/2015-05-27--rms--chania--greece.webm

That view is expressed very well and it is a view that I share.

Now, for all I know a Cisco certification does not equate to nonfree software
development. The OP indicated that he thought it was a problem and my
comments were directed toward the OP's views.

Out of curiosity, does anyone who either has played the game or seen the
existing videos know of things in particular that ought to be shown in the

[Trisquel-users] $14 fantastic wifi adaptor - TP-LINK TL-WN722N

2016-05-26 Thread andyprough
I bought one of these USB wifi adaptors about 1 1/2 years ago, and I see they
are still readily available on Amazon. I'm just amazed at how it's
immediately recognized and ready for use whether I'm on Trisquel or Parabola
(Arch) without dealing with any of the firmware blobs or any settings
whatsoever. And it works like a champ - never seems to fade out like the old
embedded wifi chips in the laptops used to. Nice clear, strong signal.

And for those who need/want a much smaller device size, the $25 TPE-N150USB
on thinkpenguin.com is also well worth the price. Also immediately recognized
and ready for use without diving into any settings from my experience.

Just thought I'd mention it - I still run into users with the same old nasty
wifi firmware problems on their newer laptops. These pair of USB wifi
adaptors are a pure joy to work with, and will get you online in no time. I
believe both are using the Atheros AR9271 chipset which has a non-proprietary
firmware module packed right onto the Linux-libre kernel.

I think this may lead to a petty argument.
It is all very well us saying "get another job" because we do not know the
circumstances, but more generally it is true that there are other options. So
I would say get the certification if you really need it but keep in mind that
it is just a certification. If you are a clever person then this is
defeinitely not the last chance, so to speak. I would say consider all
avenues and courses of action, and naturally the one that favours libre
software (I am assuming this is a computer science or administration job
based on the fact it needs a certification from the Cisco corporation).
If you are a student, then get involved with computer science clubs. See if
there are any talent scouts from employers (Some are probably better than
others; Red Hat and ironically Google are quite good for this, although I
would personally feel like I was working in some creepy born-again cult, and
Silicon Valley ideals are pretty vile, like a lot of sickly-sweet stuff
there). You might find a path in research and teaching is more compatable
with this, or even journalism and running your own business.

mkisofs option -r alters ownership and access permissions of the file copies

Although this is beneficial for publishing or data transport, it is not

mkisofs and genisoimage produce Rock Ridge only if option -R is given.
xorriso -as mkisofs

produces it by default but also accepts an explicit option -R.

Hi,

i updated my previous replies by "code" tags. Hopefully my proposals
for changing the encryption script are more readable now.
(I wonder how to avoid the double spacing between lines.)

> Maybe the begining of an answer ?

You are nearly there. Combine your two failed experiments:

xorriso -as mkisofs -r backup | aespipe -e aes256 > backup.iso

(I tested this with "cat" rather than "aespipe ...".)

Reasoning:
xorriso interprets commands. One of them is "-as". The first argument after
"-as" chooses the emulation mode. Either mode "mkisofs" or mode "cdrecord".
The further arguments up to the first "--" are then interpreted as
options of the emulated programs.

There is no xorriso command "-r". So without preceeding "-as" "mkisofs",
this yields the error message about "Not a known command".
Further, xorriso does not accept lonely words as input paths (unless
command -add_plainly enabled this). Such paths are rather submitted as
arguments of commands like -map or -add. So your path "backup" gets the
same complaint "Not a known command".

If you run xorriso for backup purposes, consider to enable some extras
by -as mkisofs option --for_backup: MD5 checksums for superblock,
directory tree, overall ISO, and each data file in the ISO, recording
of ACL and xattr.

xorriso -as mkisofs --for_backup -r backup | aespipe -e aes256 > backup.iso

The checksums can be verified on the decrypted ISO (i guess

aespipe -d -e aes256 backup_clear.iso

) by xorriso runs like:

xorriso -for_backup -indev backup_clear.iso -check_media --

(Note that the "-for_backup" used here is a xorriso command, not an
-as mkisofs option. To have an effect it must be executed before the
-indev command which loads the ISO tree and extra info.)

If verification errors or read errors are reported but the directory
tree is still ok, one can search for damaged data files by

xorriso -for_backup -indev backup_clear.iso -check_md5_r SORRY / --

This can also be done if the ISO is on optical medium or on USB stick

xorriso -for_backup -indev /dev/sr0 -check_media --
xorriso -for_backup -indev stdio:/dev/sdd -check_media --

The prefix "stdio:" is necessary because xorriso normaly refuses on
drive addresses under /dev/ if they do not lead to a SCSI/MMC device.
By the prefix you confirm that you want to use the /dev/ file like
a normal data file.

Recorded ACL and xattr can be listed by xorriso in the input format
of programs setfacl(1) and setfattr(1). The can be restored together
with the file data by xorriso if enabled by command -osirrox "on".

Have a nice day :)

Thank you all for your answers.

Of course HKR,
There is still the possibility of using GPG very easily to encrypt files and
do a back up on a cd or dvd.

But when you have a whole folder filled with plenty of other folders or

file you're looking for, or even open it from the software, just as you can
do on a USB key or external HD encrypted with Luks.

GPG is ok for single files. But a folder needs to be zip compressed then

That means you'll have to copy the zip file somewhere on you hard drive or
wherever and decompress it .

You can't use it for a whole DVD-R or even a CD-R because it's just too long.
