Re: [Trisquel-users] suggestions to uruk gnu/linux 2.0
Maybe an accessible login greeter, such as the one used in Trisquel? How about an accessible net installer, such as in Debian? I'd suggest sticking to Mate 1.12, based on problem reports that latelyh come up on Sonar GNU support forum. if you are sticking with Mate, how about including audacious as the music player, and vlc as the audio/video player? I'd suggest removing or restricting the Ubuntu Mate software boutique to free repositories. Finally, has the trouble with accessibility of graphical applications, run as superuser, been addressed in distros running Mate?

Re: [Trisquel-users] The future of Libre Computing: Crowd Funding Campaign Starts Now
Thank you Luke! I'll admit I didn't initially plan to re-pitch again, but your fresh perspective provided me with another set of arguments to employ. I've now managed to convince them to back for a computer card. I am truly grateful that you invested your precious time in providing advice to me, which was invaluable. Also, this is an absolutely incredible project. I know I've said that before, but it's still only just dawning on me how much thought you have put into every detail of this. Just having USB ports on the inside makes this one of the best laptops ever to be invented.
Re: [Trisquel-users] The future of Libre Computing: Crowd Funding Campaign Starts Now
Yes it makes more sense now, sorry. my bad. I will withhold my stupid idea then and say your right. I wish you good luck.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
They're fine for heavy usage every day. People use Libreboot systems for servers and other uses. I think at this point we are focusing on numbers rather than real-world performance.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
No, CPUs with more IPC are "i" series, and have microcode (backd00r, powerful rootkit) built-in, no one can remove it, only Intel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
Well, that sucks because I feel the IPC from Core2 and pre-Zen Chips are like the new Pentium 4, they're trash. Though, I think the dual opterons can still be usable depending on how multithreaded your workload is and can afford the electricity, but there's stuff to look forward to like free IP Cores where you can have FPGA accelerated GEGL or MLT or free CPU designs like the free implementation of SuperH.
Re: [Trisquel-users] The future of Libre Computing: Crowd Funding Campaign Starts Now
> I only suggested moving towards the other options merely because I didn't see other options at the moment. the reason *why* there are no other options is BECAUSE PEOPLE HAVEN'T FUNDED THINKPENGUIN ENOUGH! :) ThinkPenguin's work *IS* the reason why the AR9271's firmware is even libre in the first place! firmware for wifi drivers doesn't become libre all by itself. the creators of these chipsets have absolutely no grasp of how important it is. they just want to get product out the door, sell it, make money, rinse and repeat. they spend the absolute minimum amount of money on firmware development to get it out the door. they have *no idea* that their cost-cutting exercises are the cause of problems such that people have to abandon products using their failed and limited chipsets, not realising that if they released the firmware it would hugely extend the lifetime of the products. qualcomm totally replaced all the developers and the management for the ath10k designs. that new management team GENUINELY believed that the success of the ath9k was down exclusively to qualcomm's own efforts, not realising that the success is down to huge libre interoperability because of available firmware source code. so what did they do? develop something that is totally locked down, entirely proprietary, and called it a "success". they have *no* idea that libre is important - for their own financial success! - and we no longer have any contacts so cannot reach them to explain how it really works. this is an extremely complex situation which takes a *huge* amount of time and effort - literally YEARS - to hand-hold these people through the process... and it needs to be done again, and again, and again, and again. > Although a plan is in the works to get new libre wifi firmware yes? yes... but it takes long-term ongoing funding, where the way to *provide* that funding is to consistently and regularly buy products from Think Penguin, *not* from their competitors whom we *know* are *not* using the funds to pursue libre wifi firmware, whereas we know that Think Penguin definitely is. ...start to make sense now?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
That is all true. But you are best randomising it in software, as opposed to hardware. The default could still identify you on a network, if you are only one or two of people with such a MAC address (and if there are two of you, there is a fair chance that the network would crash, not expecting two different MAC addresses on the same network). So you are best to randomise it in the same way that TAILS does.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Libreboot 20160818
Trisquel 8, thank to NetworkManager 1.2, will bring a much better solution: https://blogs.gnome.org/lkundrak/2016/01/18/networkmanger-and-tracking-protection-in-wi-fi-networks/
Re: [Trisquel-users] The future of Libre Computing: Crowd Funding Campaign Starts Now
hmmm... That wasn't on my radar. That is a good point although it is also a point that I am not sure how to answer... I only suggested moving towards the other options merely because I didn't see other options at the moment. It is good you mention this. Although a plan is in the works to get new libre wifi firmware yes?
Re: [Trisquel-users] The future of Libre Computing: Crowd Funding Campaign Starts Now
that's for the laptop and for general-purpose computing, CalmStorm - it's a different focus, albeit an important one: that $100k is *gone* basically: it'll be used completely up for development, my living costs, to factories and for components. 15% goes to credit card fees and to crowd supply, so that brings it down to $85k. components, shipping and PCBs etc. will be $52k. that leaves $35k left for expenses, plane tickets, food, accommodation and another set of PCB prototypes. what chris is talking about is that if you want there to *be* 802.11ac libre WIFI firmware available, if you go out there and buy from companies *other* than Think Penguin (because they're cheaper for example), you'll be financially undermining your own ability to get libre firmware in the future... because no other company, even those that have RYF Certification, has a proven and consistent track record of actually spending the money and time to get you the libre firmware as opposed to simply pocketing the profits.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
Read the FAQ. This is covered in great detail. https://libreboot.org/faq/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Getting debian fsf approved
It's hypothetical. If your website just distributes Debian main, then what does it offer over Debian standard installation images, since you are still distributing Debian, which still links to documentation, and recommends nonfree firmware in log files, etc etc?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
"Since it is a unique identifier, it can be used to track you while on the internet" This seems a little hyperbolical. A website you are accessing on the internet (like, say, fsf.org) has no access to your MAC address. The place you're connecting to from would be able to know it so a better way to say it might be that "Since it is a unique identifier, network access points can track you from one the other." This is the case as long as you're connected to the access point, regardless of whether or not you are actually making use of the internet. But anyway, you seem to be missing my point. I was responding to vita_cell's "I always flashed ROMs with default MAC address." This is a bad practice. Plain and simple. Even that website doesn't advocate for everyone to adopt the same MAC address. Because if everyone used the same MAC address no one could do anything. So don't use the default MAC address in libreboot, okay? Make up something random if you want in the name of privacy or security or whatever -- but that is beyond the scope of the point I was making.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
Why don't you ask them on IRC?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Little problems with HDD and video
Thank you for your suggestions. I already have the latest kernel and SMPlayer hangs for a while exactly the same way VLC does - when I move my mouse while playing full screen video - it has something to do with showing the control bar at the bottom; it's "funny" that two different media players have the same problems on my computer... I think I'll just wait for the new Trisquel/kernel/VLC versions, I can live with that ;-)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
On asus kfsn4-dre there is long delay before it boot. In coreboot there is no such bug still don`t understend why this is not fixed yet in libreboot.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Freedom Fridays (development updates) 4
@heather Am getting some of that placebo effect from my monthly donation to the FSF; time to resume my monthly Trisquel donation.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Freedom Fridays (development updates) 4
You got a cup of coffee from me this week, Ruben. I'm low income too, CalmStorm, but I don't even miss that $5 that is charged on my credit card every month or the $1 to the developer of my old distro of 10-15 years ago. If enough of us toss our quarters in the hat, it adds up over time. If nothing else, it has a nice placebo effect on the giver and some minor health benefits from reducing the giver's own caffeine consumption anyway.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Freedom Fridays (development updates) 4
I did donate already but you know something, I will donate somewhere between 5-20$ when it is done. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Freedom Fridays (development updates) 4
I would if I had more money but gotta pay them bills heh. also, I donated 45$ already to that eoma project. So yeah... I am hopeful that succeeds. 49k to go! anyone who sees this message please do support it. :)
[Trisquel-users] I have a question, which firewall has the most potential to be secure for trisquel,
Firewallid? Gufw? or something I am not aware of... I was wondering if you could tell me the top three firewalls for trisquel 7.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Well, I just installed Powershell
That isn't even the only point either, unless you need it desperately, my opinion is to trust with barely a grain of salt or not use it at all entirely given that using microsoft software is like using an ordinary window to prevent a crminal from breaking into your house when there are no lights on. ;)
Re: [Trisquel-users] The future of Libre Computing: Crowd Funding Campaign Starts Now
ah that isn't good. But guess what, 100K I saw last night. You are on your way I am hoping. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Freedom Fridays (development updates) 4
Thank you for another great update, Rubén! As promised I have donated $50 to the Trisquel project for this update. Who else will join me? Even if you can't do $50 please consider setting some amount that you can afford and join in. Long live Trisquel!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Well, I just installed Powershell
There are many licenses, not all of which are free. https://github.com/PowerShell/PowerShell/blob/master/license_thirdparty_proprietary.txt

How do you patch the rom ? Or should I build the rom from source with the MAC address changed ?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Freedom Fridays (development updates) 4
Here is a rough example of how I did it. Hope you can use it in this form. First get root shell using "sudo su". After that you can run the following commands. FLIDAS=/mnt/flidas debootstrap flidas $FLIDAS http://es.archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/ curl http://jenkins.trisquel.info/repos/trisquel/key.asc > $FLIDAS/root/key.asc cat < $FLIDAS/etc/apt/sources.list deb http://es.archive.trisquel.info/trisquel flidas main deb http://es.archive.trisquel.info/trisquel flidas-updates main deb http://es.archive.trisquel.info/trisquel flidas-security main deb http://jenkins.trisquel.info/repos/trisquel/flidas flidas main #deb http://jenkins.trisquel.info/repos/trisquel/flidas flidas-updates main deb http://jenkins.trisquel.info/repos/trisquel/flidas flidas-security main EOF After doing this you will have flidas debootstrapped, with jenkins repo key in root dir and sources list set up. Then you can mount some stuff for flidas to have and chroot to the system. mount --bind /dev/ /mnt/flidas/dev/ mount -t devpts none /mnt/flidas/dev/pts/ mount -t proc none /mnt/flidas/proc/ chroot /mnt/flidas/ You can now add the key. cat /root/key.asc | apt-key add - After updating using "apt-get update" you can install packages. When you want to exit, just execute "exit". After that you can un-mount the stuff you mounted previously. umount /mnt/flidas/dev/pts umount /mnt/flidas/dev umount /mnt/flidas/proc To use the system later you don't need to repeat everything, just the mount and chroot part.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Getting debian fsf approved
If you are right about fsf then I disagree more about fsf's policy. I should have asked fsf about my librian example. > installing Debian No, you install librian. > will naturally be directed to the Debian documentation in each of the packages Librian's repository is main from debian 8. Unless I get informed otherwise all information in main is about free software. As I wrote before, librian.com has one link which is a download of a librian iso. No other links.
Re: [Trisquel-users] The future of Libre Computing: Crowd Funding Campaign Starts Now
There is some truth that we may get source code for an 802.11ac chipset. I wouldn't hold my breath that it'll happen any time soon. It took years to get the code for the last 802.11n chip and it's going to be more challenging this time around. As far as 802.11n dual-band is concerned the main chipsets that we're building off are discontinued. It's unlikely we'll be able to get more adapters manufactured. We tried stocking up, but insufficient resources limits how much stock and how long these things can continue to be purchased beyond the general-market availability time period. This is why it's so important that people support the work we're doing. When we get support and people don't just go elsewhere it helps to provide us with the resources we need to pull these sorts of projects off (even if it takes a while). Right now we're stuck. Not enough money and not enough time. What is happening is happening very slowly.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Little problems with HDD and video
Regarding the first question you could put your Abrowser profile and cache into ram. That will make things faster and no more disk crunching, probably helps with battery life as well. There are various scripts floating around to do that (the issue is preserving changes as ram is volatile). Or you could do it manually. There is an existing tmpfs in /dev/shm.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot 20160818
Will Libreboot ever support a board that supports a CPU with more IPC than a Core 2 Duo/Pre-Zen AMD?
