Re: [Trisquel-users] Should I refuse to buy from Technoethical?
I know what you mean an you could probably catch me saying things n alignment with it. I do believe though, that ethics is a human measure. I am not sure what you mean by "Operating on the right side of the force gives you no immunity", but as I read it, it underlines what I wrote: No matter how 'right' you are, you have to take responsibility for your actions. I.e., working for Apple etc is not without ethical consequences to yourself.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Should I refuse to buy from Technoethical?
Of course a company can behave unethically. Many of them do. Take Apple for instance. Operating on the right side of the force gives you no immunity.
[Trisquel-users] I finally managed to install Trisquel 8 :D I'm made it! Here's how I did it.
Following from https://trisquel.info/en/forum/i-am-interested-using-trisquel-7-or-8-my-korora-laptop-not-able-boot-my-usb-20-drive: I made my USB drive UEFI-only, and it finally booted. Instructions are at https://askubuntu.com/questions/395879/how-to-create-uefi-only-bootable-usb-live-media. I used gparted to format my USB drive as one fat32 partition, then followed the instructions under "1.1. Example via terminal". I will be adding this to the wiki. Now, I am finally an official member of the Trisquel community.
Re: [Trisquel-users] raptor talos will make a lower priced mainboard, if you buy 10000
Thanks Time4Tea -- that seems like a good way of coordinating this kind of effort
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wiki page, disclaimer, does it make sense at all
In fact in my case the ME stops at the BUP phase (bring up). In the slide 17 everything is explained very well here: https://recon.cx/2014/slides/Recon%202014%20Skochinsky.pdf
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wiki page, disclaimer, does it make sense at all
Citing the author of the me_cleaner: For pre-Skylake firmware (ME version < 11) this tool removes almost everything, leaving only the two fundamental modules needed for the correct boot, ROMP and BUP. The code size is reduced from 1.5 MB (non-AMT firmware) or 5 MB (AMT firmware) to ~90 kB of compressed code. Starting from Skylake (ME version >= 11) the ME subsystem and the firmware structure have changed, requiring substantial changes in me_cleaner. The fundamental modules required for the correct boot are now four (rbe, kernel, syslib and bup) and the minimum code size is ~300 kB of compressed code (from the 2 MB of the non-AMT firmware and the 7 MB of the AMT one).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wiki page, disclaimer, does it make sense at all
It should be ok considering that the laptop where I used it is "old" (Lenovo Y70-70) and with only the version 8 of the ME. Newer versions of the ME are more difficult and more complex. The wiki that I am writing is very simple, just the description of the steps I followed and where I found the information. It could be applied to other laptops but each case is different. Here for example the status of attempts of other people: https://github.com/corna/me_cleaner/issues/3
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wiki page, disclaimer, does it make sense at all
Ok, I assume intelmetool is trustworthy (or not, but I'm really a newbie). Anyway it is an interesting world. I will learn more about it. Please write your wiki! ;)
Re: [Trisquel-users] libplist1 package verification error and dependency trap
Thanks for posting this problem because I get the same message for any repository app I attempt to install. So you are not alone with this.
Re: [Trisquel-users] raptor talos will make a lower priced mainboard, if you buy 10000
I may not commit to another motherboard (not sure) but I am willing to promote the campaign via blogging and dropping comments in forums. Please keep us informed with price, urls and dates.
Re: [Trisquel-users] raptor talos will make a lower priced mainboard, if you buy 10000
Thanks Heather. What is #lgn ? My quick web-search revealed: https://libregamenight.xyz/ https://libregamewiki.org/Main_Page I wasn't aware of these sites, perhaps you have more urls you can share? And - oh for sure do not under-estimate gamers - because I believe gamers can Save the WORLD: Ask Jane McGonigal What Is “Gameful”? https://ronmamita.wordpress.com/2013/08/22/what-is-gameful/ Imagine playing the game of life like a awesome super-gamer; defeating the challenges to worldwide freedom FTW! That is the message I share with the youth and game developers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Should I refuse to buy from Technoethical?
Yes, they were being ridiculous.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Should I refuse to buy from Technoethical?
First of all, in my experience Technoethical gives superb service before, during and after purchase of their products and services. I can only recommend it from a consumer point of view. Secondly, I do not want to enter or re-open the discussion that have taken place and that Heather correctly states 'has worked itself out', but I don't think a company can 'behave' unethically. People can though. I will not publicly judge anyone in the mentioned thread but if you - as you question suggests - judge staff of Technoethical to have behaved unethically to a level where you are willing to denounce the company, I guess you will soon run out of companies to deal with. To the best of my knowledge, Technoethical has for long and still contribute to the community of free soft- and hardware in a large scale. That deserves out support.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Should I refuse to buy from Technoethical?
i would say it really depends if you really trust or want their phones me i use a cheap samsung j3 phone but i know it doesn't respect my freedom but i have it rooted so i can get rid of the apps and use custom roms to it and replicant is one.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Should I refuse to buy from Technoethical?
"there was forum drama" is not expressing the abhorrent things that happened in those threads properly; I think you're understating the issue. Everybody can read and judge for themselves. If you still want to buy, go ahead. I will not.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wiki page, disclaimer, does it make sense at all
Check this: https://github.com/corna/me_cleaner/blob/master/README.md he wrote: This project is an attempt to remove as much code as possible from such firmware without falling into the 30 minutes recovery mode. Whit his tool almost all ME partitions are overwritten with empty values. I checked the ME status with the intention provided by the coreboot project and the status is disabled. It doesn't boot without the missing partitions and at the same time it doesn't shut down the device after 30 minutes. I am perfectly satisfied with this. A functionally disabled ME is fine with me even if some code still is in the Bios
Re: [Trisquel-users] Should I refuse to buy from Technoethical?
Thank you, I guess I will take your word for it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] new build with gigabyte ga-g41m-es2l
i ordered a new AIRLINK 101 SUPER G WIRELESS PCI ADAPTER AWLH4130 that has a Atheros AR5001X+ chipset with trisquel 6 support so it might have 7 support.also my problem is that i am on a tight budget so thinkpeguin and tehnoetic is out of question but if i have to ill buy from them. https://h-node.org/wifi/view/en/22/Atheros-Communications-Inc--Atheros-AR5001X+-Wireless-Network-Adapter/2/1/undef/undef/yes/PCI/wifi-works/undef

Re: [Trisquel-users] raptor talos will make a lower priced mainboard, if you buy 10000
Hi tonlee, seems like you're doing some great work on this and I think your plan for campaigning sounds good. I have a couple of comments though: Firstly, I strongly recommend going for a desktop ATX board over notebook. An ATX board is very standard, so most people who already own a desktop PC should be able to switch it in fairly easily, without having to buy any new hardware (other than the CPU). If you go for a notebook, that will either restrict it to those people who already have that specific hardware, or mean that people would have to go and buy a new laptop as well, in order to use it. I'm surprised they even mentioned a notebook board. I would think designing an ATX board would be much easier, because it's nowhere near as constrained in terms of space and thermal requirements as a notebook (not that I know very much about PC board design ..). Secondly, about the performance part - I've been thinking about this some more and I really think it would need to be better than an Intel Core 2 Duo. I have a laptop already that has a Core 2 Duo and is 100% libre, so if your board has a similar spec chip, then what is that giving me that I don't already have? A big part of the excitement over the Talos II is that it is using a libre chip that looks like it will give comparable performance to more recent Intel/AMD chips. I think the project would struggle to gain support if it isn't raising the bar of what free computing can do.
Re: [Trisquel-users] raptor talos will make a lower priced mainboard, if you buy 10000
I have written think penguin asking if they would be interested in endorsing a campaign and crowd funding about a lower priced ppc libre software mainboard. Think penguin answered yes, if we could come up with a midway acceptable plan to get 1 mainboards sold. We both agree, we may not achieve the goal. Then we can say, libre software people had an option and did not jump on it. In another email to think penguin I sketched my approach, which I refer here. We will not be able to sell a mainboard to people, who do not know about libre software. Only those who already want a libre software computer will buy a mainboard. The task is to inform them. A campaign has to be scheduled to start on a set day. That day every one involved in the campaign will know who to inform and how. The campaign will have two groups of actors. Mass and front runners. Mass would be people on trisquel's forum. We would coordinate the task to email various websites in different languages. Front runners would be fsfe, fsf, think penguin, Snowden, Thomas Drake, Rutkowska, Assange endorsing the mainboard. We will have to seek their support. Fsf could play a role in this task. Snowden has 300 followers on twitter. He may response to an email from fsf. The mainboard to be manufactured will aspire to 2 requirements. A performance comparable to an intel duo core x86 cpu. And the lowest achievable price. In result the mainboard will come with no extras included in the price. Raptor told me, they assess 1 buyers are not present. Therefore raptor will not be part of a campaign or crowd funding. They say, show us the money and raptor will make the mainboard. In raptor's email, they indicated, that they can make both atx and notebook mainboards. I suggest a notebook mainboard should be made. A notebook mainboard would allow people to explore making their own notebook. Instructions telling how to turn the mainboard into a desktop should be provided. I am in favor of getting the crowd funding run by think penguin. I do not know whether think penguin will do it. I have asked raptor to list an overview of specifcations. Remarks or suggestions?
[Trisquel-users] Re : Uruk GNU/Linux 2.0 (Beta1)
Just a reminder the version Uruk GNU/linux 2 beta-2 was released just recently https://trisquel.info/fr/forum/uruk-gnulinux-20-beta-2
Re: [Trisquel-users] raptor talos will make a lower priced mainboard, if you buy 10000
This is actually happening right now. I'm too old to keep up with the gaming world but still young enough to have a kid who does. There is an IRC channel for libre gaming at #lgn. My nine year old does not play proprietary games despite the heavy peer pressure in this age group and has done his own share of outreach. Do not underestimate gamers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Uruk GNU/Linux 2.0 (Beta1)
Yea, that's why I miss virtualizing so much. It really is best to wait for the stable release when you need to get your work done. My gamer kid enjoys bleeding edge sometimes, but I stick to my Trisquel 7 on at least one machine. You might be able to virtualize the 32 bit image. IIRC, you mentioned having access to a pretty fast and powerful machine. But I digress.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Should I refuse to buy from Technoethical?
There was forum drama but it worked itself out. Maybe someone else can give you a recap or a summary since I'm not up for it at the moment, but I wouldn't personally hesitate to buy from Technoethical for a minute. Tiberiu's prices seem to indicate his willingness to do work that doesn't look like much fun, besides being way beyond my own technical ability. I'm currently saving my pennies to have my X200 Tablet librebooted by Technoethical. Tiberiu has been very patient with all of my "customer service" questions that can and should wait until after I can actually afford the work. Other people will have other opinions and other experiences, but this is my own. You could also try flashing Replicant yourself. The community sounds excellent.
[Trisquel-users] Re : new build with gigabyte ga-g41m-es2l
http://libre.thinkpenguin.com and https://tehnoetic.com are the only two vendors that guarantee that 100% free Linux kernels (no proprietary firmware in particular) properly drive all the hardware they sell (including internal Wifi cards). They both internationally ship. With any other vendor, there is a risk that the chipset changed. Constructor sometimes do that: they change the chipset (what matters for the support) during the life time of a model and there is no way to know (the wrapping, in particular, is the same).
[Trisquel-users] Should I refuse to buy from Technoethical?
I was thinking of buying replicant smartphones from them, but I saw this thread (https://trisquel.info/en/forum/technoethical-t400s-now-available?page=1) and this thread (https://trisquel.info/en/forum/purism-working-libre-phone#comment-120424). It seems really unethical for a company to behave like this. It's a shame, as they are one of the few companies with RYF smartphones.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Should I refuse to buy from Technoethical?
Sorry, I meant almost RYF smartphones.
Re: [Trisquel-users] new build with gigabyte ga-g41m-es2l
How can you run this computer with no CPU?
[Trisquel-users] I am interested in using Trisquel 7 or 8, but my Korora Laptop is not able to boot my USB 2.0 Drive
So for now, I have ordered a CD with Trisquel 7 from OSDisc. This is the Korora Laptop for more information (https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/korora-penguin-gnu-linux-notebook). I tried the solution offered in another thread, and it still didn't work (https://trisquel.info/en/forum/live-usb-made-dd-not-booting-korora-laptop#comment-80572). Any suggestions?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Live USB Issues

Re: [Trisquel-users] Uruk GNU/Linux 2.0 (Beta1)
Heh
Re: [Trisquel-users] Uruk GNU/Linux 2.0 (Beta1)
hmm... It turned out that it's quit risky.. Installation of files takes too long.. Maybe I should update system after installation.. Anyway he is happy with his 'Free side of the force' Trisquel ;) I will do some testing and if everything is fine, I will dual boot it with Uruk. If not, we will wait for stable release. *** One of the slides has a mistake.. It says that u-rpmi command is to build software from source and u-src is to install rpm packs..
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wiki page, disclaimer, does it make sense at all
You deactivated EME ? I thougt it was not possible.
