[Trisquel-users] Trisquel development questions
I'm interested to try to lend a hand with fixing some package helpers, to try to do what I can to contribute to getting Trisquel 8 ready for release, but I have a couple of questions: 1) Why is the HEAD of the trisquel-helpers git repository pointing to the 'belenos' branch? Isn't flidas the new version that is currently being developed? 2) I ran this pbuilder command: sudo BUILDDIST=flidas BUILDARCH=amd64 pbuilder create recommended on this page (with 'belenos' switched for 'flidas'); however the output indicated that the distribution was belenos. Did I do something wrong and is this a problem? Possibly something to do with the .pbuilderrc config file?
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
... Yeah, that's way easier. Thanks, Magic Banana. GrevenGull, you can get the 'command' for the menu entry by right clicking 'Tor Browser' in tor-browser_en-US, selecting 'Properties', and copying what's in the 'command' field. For me it looks like this. sh -c '"/home/mason/Applications/tor-browser_en-US/Browser/start-tor-browser" --detach || ([ ! -x "/home/mason/Applications/tor-browser_en-US/Browser/start-tor-browser" ] && "$(dirname "$*")"/Browser/start-tor-browser --detach)' dummy %k
Re: [Trisquel-users] Who of this community honestly runs Trisquel GNU/Linux?
I'm writing this on Trisquel 8 right now - it's completely useable (although perhaps not quite stable enough yet to be formally released).
[Trisquel-users] Re : Initramfs problems ...
I do not know.
[Trisquel-users] Re : How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
Alternatively, the launcher can be created through the "New Item" button of "Main Menu" (in the "System Settings").
Re: [Trisquel-users] Custom building and water cooling in the free world?
If you want components it's pretty much the build-it-yourself way just like outside of FSF & GNU. For motherboards, look at the ones supported by libreboot: https://libreboot.org/docs/hardware/ and replace the proprietary BIOS with libreboot. At home I have both the Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2L and Asus KFSN4-DRE. Build your computer system around it, using whatever cooling system works. My KFSN4-DRE is rather loud because the CPU fans are small and spin very fast. They, sadly, need to be small because the CPUs are close together on the motherboard and so the fans can't get any bigger. Because of this I am thinking of replacing the CPU fans with a water cooling option, although I haven't looked into this yet. I don't expect the water cooling system to contain any software in it and so I don't expect it to raise any software freedom issues. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Upgrading to Trisquel 8
I managed to solve the authentication issues by simply re-installing the 'Trisquel-Keyring' package. New packages are now authenticating fine with Flidas. However, if the keys had been updated, shouldn't that have prompted a package upgrade?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Initramfs problems ...
Ok, thanks for your advice, Magic Banana. I will try the latest kernel and see if that trackpad driver is any better. Failing that, is it possible to 'transplant' a kernel module from an earlier kernel version into a newer one?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Who of this community honestly runs Trisquel GNU/Linux?
Trisquel is still a nice distro, even if you use Trisquel 7. You can update to the latest linux-libre from third party repos e.g. freesh, or build your own modern kernels. You can also use Ubuntu PPAs for certain things (free/libre packages, backported to Ubuntu 14.04, which is what Trisquel 7 is based on). Trisquel also keeps up to date its ABrowser web browser, which is a version of firefox, and other applications. When Trisquel 8 is out, it's likely that an in-place update to it from T7 will be possible. For those who want something more up to date, Parabola or Hyperbola are good alternatives to Trisquel. Parabola is bleeding edge, based on Arch, and FSF endorsed. It's ideal for development systems or for non-critical desktops. Server/workstation usage is also possible, if you know what you're doing. Hyperbola is relatively up to date, and also a libre fork of Arch like Parabola, but with a focus on debian-like stability and regular release cycles (ideal for workstations, servers etc). It has a different focus than Parabola, and although not yet FSF endorsed, it does seem to comply with FSF criteria and one or two Parabola developers contribute to or have otherwise moved over to it. https://www.parabola.nu/ https://www.hyperbola.info/ Pick your poison :)

Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
Hah! The irony, I misspelled in a comment about triple checking. But yeah, I checked and wrote dpkg. Nice! :) The Gdebi worked smoothly, tyvm
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
It's 'dpkg', not 'spkg'. Maybe quadruple check. :) You can also use Gdebi Package Installer if you'd prefer a GUI.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Rekong gives wierd suggestions not in line with FSF?
It uses KDE Plasma as its default desktop environment instead of GNOME (the default in Trisquel) or LXDE (the default in Trisquel Mini). It's possible that Rekonq is a dependency of of the version of KDE Plasma in Trisquel 7, similarly to how you recently discovered that Pidgin and Lifrea are a dependency of GNOME. In this case, Trisquel 7 would have had to include Rekonq even though it shouldn't be used anymore (Konqueror has replaced it as the KDE browser).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Rekong gives wierd suggestions not in line with FSF?
Yes, it is easy to add either when using the Netinstal ISO or as a meta package afterwards. https://trisquel.info/en/forum/do-we-have-kde-spin#comment-112382
Re: [Trisquel-users] Rekong gives wierd suggestions not in line with FSF?
Trisquel is FSF-endorsed because it is committed to including only free software. Rekonq is free software. Although Facebook, Google, and Amazon are terrible companies who among other things create some proprietary software, their search engines do not require any proprietary software (just don't use them with JavaScript enabled). I agree, though, that Rekonq should not be in the repository. Fortunately, it looks like Rekonq has been removed in Trisquel 8.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Rekong gives wierd suggestions not in line with FSF?
"Triskel, a KDE version of Trisquel" ? :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Rekong gives wierd suggestions not in line with FSF?
Rekonq is unmaintained since 2014. Nobody should use it. It should be removed from the repos. Maybe it's been included because there is Triskel, a KDE version of Trisquel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Who of this community honestly runs Trisquel GNU/Linux?
I do, my main system at home !
Re: [Trisquel-users] Rekong gives wierd suggestions not in line with FSF?
Okay, I just don't understand why they keep it in the repository then. I'm no prgrammer, but shouldn't that be fairly easy to do? I mean... this whole OS is supposed to really FSF-recommended, and here they are offering me a browser which in turn recommend me Facebook, Google, Amazon and lord knows what. I'm actually... kind of disappointed tbh.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
Gotcha, thanks for the tips! Also, I tried to sudo spkg a .deb package and I get an error with "No such file or directory" I have triple checked the spelling. Do you any ideas?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Rekong gives wierd suggestions not in line with FSF?
Rekonq is developed by KDE, not Trisquel. Apparently KDE does not see a problem with recommending Google or Amazon. That shouldn't be interpreted as an endorsement of those companies by Trisquel. Trisquel does remove from Firefox such recommendations as well as recommendations for proprietary add-ons (the result is Abrowser), but doing the same for Rekonq is probably not a priority since Rekonq has been discontinued for several years.
[Trisquel-users] Rekong gives wierd suggestions not in line with FSF?
So when I was going to set default search engine in the Rekong browser, it suggested various t, Google and Amazon sites. What's up with that?
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
Yes, you're right. I wasn't thinking.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
Very good answer. But he don't need to use sudo for writing .desktop file.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Unable to remove applications, help
Ok, that explains a lot lol. I just removed them and was struggling like a sucker. So I wiped my hard disk and installed the whole OS again :P This time around I'm gonna take things a little slower lol
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
Woah, you are a saint, thx!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Unable to remove applications, help
Pidgin and Lifrea are part of GNOME, your desktop environment (assuming that you are using Trisquel 7). If you remove them along with their dependencies you might accidentally remove something important. If you don't plan to use these applications (give Liferea a chance though, I like it a lot) and you aren't hurting for disk space, you may be better off just hiding them from your menu.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
What's "sources.list" "start-menu" -> preferences -> add/remove applications, then I made sure it showed all available applications and searched in the search bar.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
You’re free to do and install anything. It’s your machine. However, the recommended way is to use the official repositories. The other way is the Windows way — search frantically everywhere and install any old exe file you can possibly find. Then, have problems with malesre infestation. The GNU/Linux way is supposed to be more secure. If you absolutely need some other program not included in the repos, be sure to check hash sum. Use with discretion and avoid places like Cnet that wrap installers with adware.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
IceCat doesn't show up under 'Add/Remove Applications' but is in the repository. You can install it from Synaptic Package Manager, or in a terminal$ sudo apt install icecat If you are using Trisquel 7, Thunderbird is called Icedove. Again, it can be installed from Synaptic Package Manager, or in a terminal$ sudo apt install icedove In general, if you don't see something in 'Add/Remove Applications' that you suspect should be there, check Synaptic Package Manager. If by Tor you mean Tor Browser, it is indeed not in the repository. Users of Tor Browser need to receive updates immediately and simultaneously, regardless of which distro they use, to ensure that they have identical browser configurations, preserving anonymity. Download Tor Browser directly from https://www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html.en After downloading the tar.xz file, find a good place to extract it. I have a directory in my home folder called Applications for applications like these. After extracting, you now have ~/Applications/tor-browser_en-US (~ is your home folder, equivalent to /home/[your username]). You can delete the tar.xz file now. Enter ~/Applications/tor-browser_en-US, double click 'Tor Browser Setup', and it will turn into 'Tor Browser'. You can now double click that to launch Tor Browser, no need to install. If you would like Tor Browser to show up in menus alongside your other applications, you'll need to create a desktop file$ sudo nano ~/.local/share/applications/tor-browser.desktopcontaining[Desktop Entry] Name=Tor Browser Exec=/home/[your username]/Applications/tor-browser_en-US/Browser/start-tor-browser Icon=/home/[your username]/Applications/tor-browser_en-US/Browser/browser/icons/mozicon128.png Type=Application Categories=GNOME;GTK;Network;WebBrowser; In the paths following 'Exec=' and 'Icon=' replace '/home/mason/Applications' with wherever you extracted the tar.xz file. You might have to logout and login again before Tor Browser starts showing up in menus.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
Can you paste here your sources.list ? How did you try to search for IceCat? Like in my screenshot?
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
I cant find either Tor nor IceCat, and Thunderbird doesnt want to be installed via rep either. Maybe its because of my hardware?
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
Why dont you think I "should be on the look for deb packages to install"?
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
Most of packages are in Trisquel repo. You don't need to searching internet for .deb package. Just search for package with Synaptic, or via command "apt-cache search name_of_package". Of course you can't find packages which is not free software becouse they are removed from repo. To get IceCat you can execute "sudo apt-get install icecat".
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
I don't think you should be on the look for deb packages to install. Use the package repositories that are official and available in the distro. Sometimes, a developer has made his/her software available as a deb package you can download. Mostly, when you see tarballs, they either contain source code or precompiled binaries but no installer, so you can run the software from the extracted folder if all dependencies are satisfied. Sometimes there's a script (program.sh) you should run to put everything in place.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
Yeah, I think I just did. Where do I find .deb packages? I just download stuff from the websites which gives me this pack I have to extract, and then I get a folder which there is a run-shit-thing inside. So currently I am running IceCat and Tor from inside a folder, Shout out if you got something more convenient! lol :P
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
The file has DEB as extension. You shouldn't confuse tar balls with deb packages.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
Thanks a lot :D
[Trisquel-users] Custom building and water cooling in the free world?
So, I recently got into custom building desktops and water cooling. Then I met FSF and GNU. Are there any companies that sell free hardware by the components and not just the prebuilt desktop? Also, are there any water cooling companies that produce water blocks and equipment for these components? As far as I know, all the major water cooling companies today are aimed at windows users and the newest amd/intel cpus, gpus etc.

[Trisquel-users] Fluid Automounting External USB Drives In Trisquel 7
I want to automatically mount and make available for use my two external USB drives. When I have them plugged in, I see them visible in the sidebar of my file browser but they are unmounted unless I click on them. I tried using the "Disks" app to make them automatically mount, but this doesn't seem to work. After rebooting I get a message to press "S" to skip past these drives that won't automatically mount. I know I can get them to automatically mount by editing the "fstab", however, this compuater is a laptop that is sometimes connected to the external USB drives and sometimes not. Should I be setting something up where I get the USB drives to automount using my ".profile"? How do I do this?

Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
type "sudo dpkg -i name-of-your.program.deb" "sudo" means your giving yourself the power of "root" or system administrator. "dpkg" is the name of the program that can install ".deb" programs for you. "-i" is an parameter or attribute that gets enabled in the "dpkg" program for installing programs. You cauld also use "--install", which is the long form option. Enjoy your journey to learning GNU/Linux , I am almost 2 years in and use Trisquel as my main operating system. Cheers!
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
Okay, cheers. How do install "as root or with sudo"? Do I do that by typing "sudo apt" or something just before the rest of the line?
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install packages downloaded from the web, like IceCat?
If you mean .deb packages, you can install it with dpkg. Type "dpkg -i name_of_package.deb" as root or with sudo. I hope this will help you using Trisquel!

That's OK :) #libreboot IRC on freenode can help you flash it, if you get stuck. Several "libreboot installation services" are also available. There is a list on https://libreboot.org/suppliers.html
