I haven't seen scientific research which finds that humans produce
electromagnetic radiation. I was under the impression that the only
interaction the human body had with electromagnetic radiation was the eyes'
detection of visible light, and the use of ultroviolet light to synthesize
Vitamin D. Is there any chance you could send me a link to this research? It
must be quite interesting.

I would also be very interested in seeing the scientific research you mention
which shows that non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation affects human health;
I was under the impression that non-ionizing radiation, such as radio waves
and microwaves, was only capable of heating molecules up (which wouldn't be a
concern given the tiny amount of such non-ionizing radiation produced by
wireless technology). I'm curious to see what harmful effects the researchers
found. Of course, if non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation is harmful to
human health, then we have a huge problem, because everyone is bombarded with
radio waves from radio and television broadcasting 24/7.

Thanks again all. Learning a lot as I go :-)

If the WiFi doesn't work after full install I'll buy a dongle from Think
Penguin or Technoetic as recommended.

I realise its a part of life for most but I'd never use WiFi at home because
of the deleterious EMF effects. I'd suggest anyone using it at home at least
switches it off at night. Even the most dense will notice the difference to
their sleep patterns after a week or two. Remember, everyone has their own
EMF field, the integrity of which is essential to health. Especially
important for younger children. I work in alt health, so this is not an
uninformed opinion. I won't engage in a discussion, but people need to think
about the intro of 5G (old military tech first tested in WW2) & look at all
the non-industry aligned research. Especially important for those living in
towns/cities who'll be surrounded by it 24/7.

Have either of you tried the ISO that was uploaded today?

clear that impression was, as you say, quite incorrect:

It would be interesting to see what libraries and other dependencies FMW is
using under the hood, and how they compare to those used by Etcher. I will
suggest to The Assassin that we have at least a cursory glance at the FMW
code (as well as the UNetbootin code) as part of creating our fork of Etcher.
Perhaps forking an app other than Etcher might be easier or better, or
perhaps we can hybridize the best elements of multiple programs.

Going off on a bit of a tangent here, but just found this link that suggests
NoScript's author has ads linking to known malware from the NoScrit website,
and messes with people's ad-blockers to make sure they see the ads:

https://liltinkerer.surge.sh/noscript.html

The person who gave me this link also claims NoScript is not "open source".
Is this just FUD, or is NoScript going the way of AdBlock+ (which I replaced
with uBlock Origin some time ago and I couldn't be happier with it).

Re: [Trisquel-users] ebook reader advice

2018-04-14 Thread strypey
I only open office documents when I know exactly where they've come from, and
I trust the full chain of upstream sources to have reasonably secure
practices. In other words, I don't open many office documents, and like
Stallman, I tend to insist on being given OpenDocument formats, not Microsoft
anti-formats. I don't open office documents from untrusted random internet
sites at all (I'm much less suspicious of .PDF files. Is that unwise?).

So following your advice, I should not install this unmaintained package and
open the .CHM file at all.

If they do, it will be trumpeted to the heavens with a major public
announcement, as every single DNS provider (commercial or gratis, public or
private), will have to change the IP address that their DNS servers uses to
query the root servers.

"I also agree with the fact that I don't want to be subject to other people
deciding what is right or wrong for me to visit on the web, as Jodiendo
pointed out."

None of the solutions listed here will solve that problem (AFAIK), because
DNS is a centralized system with a single-point-of-failure, both technically
(the root servers) and, more importantly, organizationally (ICANN). Many
people have proposed replacing DNS with a decentralized system for mapping
human-readable domain names to IP addresses. But even in a technically
decentralized naming system run by a single authority like ICANN, would-be
censors can pressure that authority to block or confiscate names.

There's another system called GNS (GNU Name System), which is part of the
GNUNet project. I don't know much about how either of these work yet, so I
don't know if it resolves the organisational single-point-of-failure.

https://gnunet.org/gns

It's certainly a fascinating problem.

Oh, one more thing I forgot to mention in the original post. Minifree now
provides *2* batteries, per laptop, by default.

[Trisquel-users] Minifree's Libreboot X200/T400 laptops now severely reduced in price. With Trisquel pre-installed

2018-04-14 Thread info

Hi everyone :)

The Libreboot X200/T400 laptops come with Trisquel pre-installed, by default.
They also come with Libreboot installed, which is a completely free/libre
BIOS replacement. These systems are endorsed by the Free Software Foundation.
All of the hardware is fully supported by free drivers, making this a
completely freedom-respecting system.

The version of Trisquel preinstalled is Trisquel 7. Upon request, the
pre-release version of Trisquel 8 on trisquel.info can also be preinstalled.
Mention it in the textbox on the checkout page, if you want this. As soon as
Trisquel 8 is officially released, Minifree will provide version 8 by
default.

Minifree is currently running a discount sales push on both the Libreboot
X200 and Libreboot T400, in order to make them more accessible to the public.
This discount will apply for as long as it is feasible, per increased sales
volumes that are expected as a result of this discount. You may remember that
Minifree ran such a discount on its products before. Hopefully, this time it
will be permanent.

Minifree currently has a large surplus of stock. Additionally, I now have 4
third parties flashing laptops on my behalf, selling systems to Minifree.
This means that Minifree can now handle higher order volumes, which has
enabled the discount. Previously, this arrangement was not possible, so the
prices were higher to compensate for over-demand.

The main intention: to help more people be able to purchase a system with
Libreboot preinstalled, by making these systems more affordable. The primary
purpose of Minifree, since its inception, has been to bring libre systems to
the masses.

The X200 base price has been reduced to 228 EUR (previously 298 EUR). The
T400 is now 278 EUR (previously 398 EUR). The 8G RAM upgrade on both systems
was previously 110 EUR, now it's 100 EUR. The SSD price has risen from 110
EUR to 150 EUR, with capacity increased from 240GB to 480GB.

Additionally, the Libreboot Installation Service has been reduced from 248
EUR to 150 EUR. The extra batteries have been reduced from 50 EUR to 25 EUR.
The docking station (sold separately) has been reduced from 50 EUR to 30 EUR.

The systems are available here:

https://minifree.org/product/libreboot-x200/

https://minifree.org/product/libreboot-t400/

Side note:
Depending on how sales pick up, Minifree may also need additional third
parties to assist with flashing. Minifree pays equivalent to 10 GBP per hour,
where you charge a certain amount of markup per system, when selling
pre-flashed systems to Minifree. If such is needed in the future, it will be
mentioned on the website. Minifree currently has 2 suppliers in the US, and 2
in the UK.

Thanks again for responding to my post.

I don't know why I did not look at this file before posting, duh !

I know what is going wrong now. I posted awhile ago about how I was
trying out Salix because I did not want systemd and that I was sad to go.

I haven't gone. I am tri-booting at the moment but in reality only using
Trisquel.

Something is going wrong during the file generation. The
"fbcon=rotate:1" is ending up without a closing double quote.

This is a bug if it's worth looking into.

For me, the problem is solved. I am going to re-install with just
Trisquel. I have all of my data on another drive so it's easy to do.

Please see line 203 and the lines that came before it.

Have a great day-Patrick

It's firmware, not drivers. Unfortunately, most wireless cards these days
don't work without proprietary firmware, and there isn't much
reverse-engineering going on. There haven't been any advancements that I'm

Ae, the free code office suite formerly known as OpenOffice has improved
rapidly since most of the developers walked away from Oracle and formed the
DocumentFoundation and LibreOffice. Have you tried the web-based version of
LibreOffice?

"I'd like to full install Trisqel & get rid of Gates crapy windows
completely. However I'm not sure that the wifi is working properly."

Is that in the live session or after install? Very occasionally WiFi problems
solve themselves after installing to your internal drive and downloading and
installing all the updates. WiFi works fine on my AA1 without any proprietary
drivers, but as I said, it is a much older model than yours. It can take a
while before newer hardware can be made to work with existing free code
drivers, or new free code drivers written to support it.

If you can't get the WiFi working after installing and updating, I highly
recommend this Wifi dongle from ThinkPenguin:

https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-wireless-g-usb-adapter

I bought one for a desktop computer that had no WiFi, and needed to be able
to connect to a WiFi router at the other end of the house, sometimes through
two closed, wooden doors. It worked fine, and the customer support from
ThinkPenguin is second-to-none.

"I need wifi, as that's what this computer was essentially for."

Isn't that basically true of every computer smaller than a desktop these days
;)

Fedora LXDE 26 is the same as Trisquel. Midori and the same age old

I'm not sure what to think. LXQt is a KDE lookalike. It has Plasma dekstop

As both Mason and I have said in previous comments, installing E17 in
