Re: [Trisquel-users] Using USB 3 to Speed Up A Slow Hard Disk
I only use Western Digital drives. Not one has failed in my life unless is was dropped or mishandled. Seagate drives have given me the most trouble, very non-durable. Anyway, I also like how much cheaper disks are. I just want to solve the speed issue. I dont need instant access -- perhaps ill just get a faster disk drive. signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

probably a better way to have the most modern packages for some programs is to install the Guix[0] package manager. I use it for "rolling" apps like youtube-dl and syncthing. [0] - https://guix.gnu.org/manual/en/html_node/Binary-Installation.html signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to copy and paste a selected area on GIMP?
Ive been using Photoshop professionally for about 20 years and find it confusing to use GIMPs way of doing this. I was able to do what I think you are requesting by doing the following steps: Make a selection with the "Rectangle Select Tool" Select "Edit" > "Copy" Select "Edit" > "Paste As" > "New Layer" Now that it is pasted and a new layer, you have to tell the layer to be the same size as the image... Right click on the layer you just created and select "Layer to Image Size" or... You can just right click on the layer you want to copy and select "Duplicate Layer" and edit that layer however you like. signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

[Trisquel-users] About fake messages in the Trisquel mailing lists
Hello! As some of you may have noticed, someone has sent a couple of forged emails to the trisquel-members and trisquel-devel lists, pretending to be the Trisquel project leader Ruben Rodriguez. Rest assured, Ruben doesn't intend to "terminate his membership" (heh) or "add some suspicious packages as soon as possible". It may be that he (along with an amazing team of contributors) is way too busy for that working on the soon-to-be-released Trisquel 9 (testing images are already available at http://jenkins.trisquel.info/makeiso-etiona/iso/ ) Thanks for your continued support and be sure that our principles stay as solid as ever. And if at some other time you read a supposedly "official" message that sounds too far removed from those principles, please report it via the website contact form or write us at info at trisquel dot info about it.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Nobody lasts forever
> What are you going to do, stop using Free Software altogether? Like "I > don't use it because RMS said mean things"? Makes no sense. But to > each his own. Although I supported the FSF moving forward with a new president this is not why I am leaving Trisquel, and I did not say that. I know that the distribution is not RMS. I am leaving because I feel the nature of community discussion here in general, across many topics, is having a huge impact on the viability of Trisquel as a friendly distribution for those who want to dip their toe into fully-free software. I have been struggling with this since I joined efforts here. > Agreed. There should be some sort of limit to disassociating oneself > from RMS; otherwise the logical conclusion seems to be to remove > oneself from anything he ever had anything to do with at all which > would seem to mean that one has to stop using any free software at all > and go use 100% proprietary software because the entire free software > movement itself came from RMS. That's absurd, of course, but it shows > that there should be some sort of limit on this disassociation. Not > agreeing with this positions that one doesn't agree with but agreeing > with other positions (like free software) seems a sufficient line to > draw to not have to go into absurdity. People can set whatever limit they are comfortable with - it will understandably be different depending on personal views. Again, see above. I have personally rejoined the FSF to support them as they move forward... which is certainly not disassociating myself to the extent of leaving free software. I hope Trisquel continues, and grows. I just won't be part of that at this time. All the best.

The best thing about Audacious is that it supports an insane amount of audio formats. I listen to VGM, FLAC, OGG, SPC files and more. I agree Trisquel can indeed be used as a DAW. However, in my experience I have experienced many jarring issues with Ardour and JACK inparticular which causes me great frustration. In Ubuntu Studio their configuration works much much better and is very reliable. If there is anything you want backported into the next Trisquel 9 release, please make a list and speak. Maybe even join in on the Freedom Friday meeting to add to the discussion. I really like this. Thanks for putting it together. I'm definitely not very comfortable configuring all these things myself. I tiried with Trisquel 8 and I could get something working but then it would break. I ended up getting very frustrated and would give up. I think because of this I probably lost years of productiviity with my creative projects. This make me a bit sad and I really wish I could have been able to make a stable audio production system, at this point I just want to be creative. Re: [Trisquel-users] Re : Large Volume FOSS Backup Options
I definitely have. Ok, ill take another look at Dejadup again to see if it can compress everything as youve stated. It could very well be that I switched to backintime for another reason in the past, but I can't recall. Thanks for the assistance.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Re : Large Volume FOSS Backup Options
Thats definitely not true. Especially for source files -- I know this from experience. I will look into another program that compresses files as it backs them up. The default program in Trisquel is too simple for what I need.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Re : Large Volume FOSS Backup Options
... thinking on this, Perhaps what I need is a backup solition that compresses the data as it backs up. Right now, it all uncompressed.

Right now, I use BackInTime with an external RAID1. Its too little space.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Newer Software versions (gimp, libreoffice, blender and others)
I solved this issue for myself by installing the Guix package manager alongside the Trisquel repository. I use it strictly for installing the latest version GIMP, Audacity, Ardour, Godot and such -- along those lines. I would not use it for updating system tools etc. I don't have "versionitis" but I do know with certain software, it is highly beneficial to have the most current version. publickey - davidpgil@protonmail.com - 0x01EB3346.asc Description: application/pgp-keys signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

The easy way to edit that file is to copy the file from that location into an area that you have write access. change the permissions on that file so you have write access. edit the file however you like, then use sudo to copy or move you file to the default location. of course make a backup of the original. publickey - davidpgil@protonmail.com - 0x01EB3346.asc Description: application/pgp-keys signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

Re: [Trisquel-users] "Documents" folder lost its icon and does not appear any more in the shortcut list in Caja after name change.
You might want to try and see if this problem exists in another user account. Maybe create a new user and test to see if that problem still exists. If your guest account is active, you can try that too. If the problem is solved in other accounts, its likely there is some config file you can delete and have regenerated. Alternatively, you can just move all of your files to another account on the same computer. I've read your messages and I'll work into this request, at first I was going to reply that it would be better to add new languages when we make the planned switch to a new site but it doesn't make sense to lose all or part of this energy of yours in the meantime: we can import all Russian content along the other texts once the new site is ready. In short, I'll enable Russian support soon, there are a couple of quirks that we have to work on first but then we'll add the means for you to start working on translations. Thanks for your continued support and your patience :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why qre Minifree's Libreboot X200 laptop threads all locked?
Hi! you have been given two replies, both of them true but just a bit incomplete (I think :) Regarding the edit button: the first post on each thread can not be edited by its poster because of a limitation of the forum software and its integration with mailing lists. Since it can be done by an administrator, you can ask (me, for instance) for any change (i.e. typos, bad titles, etc.) and we'll help with that. Regarding the threads being locked, that's a common design decision which affects all threads (without any relation to their topics) after a given time without activity. It's better for the organization of the forum and avoids "necroposting", which usually results in less replies that with a new post. Once again, when it's needed for some reason, an administrator can revert this auto-lock. We've locked a couple of threads for content reasons, but it's a really uncommon practice at this forum :)
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 only provides the old 0AD v0.20 (2016)
Trisquel 8 only provides the game 0AD v0.20 (2016), currently the latest version is v0.23 (2018). Would it be possible to put it on the Trisquel repository ? (instead to have to get it from the repository of OAD project).

Re: [Trisquel-users] Redshift on Trisquel 8
Tutorial (the way I did) : From the Trisquel 8 "Add/remove applications" software: search "redshift", install it. Edit the Redshift config file (from a console) : pluma ~/.config/redshift.conf Content (you will have to change "lat" at "lon" values to yours): [redshift] location-provider=manual [manual] lat=44.83 lon=-0.57 Open the menu Trisquel, open "Accessories", run "Redshift".
Re: [Trisquel-users] Another bug report: Rhythmbox on GNOME is missing the label, only titled as "Unnamed"
Command line to do the edit (Trisquel 8) : sudo pluma /usr/share/applications/rhythmbox.desktop
[Trisquel-users] About our changes to comply with the GDPR
Hello, fellow trisquelians! To better adapt our site to the EU General Data Protection Regulations, we've included some needed information for you all in the shape of a privacy policy. We've also added a link from the main menu to said policy and a cookie consent pop-up that you should have to accept just once. In our Privacy Policy page we explain the type and (minimal) amounts of user data that we store for the normal functioning of the site, and we also address the visibility of personal data (specifically the email addresses used to send your posts to the mailing lists), the procedure for deleting your own account and the one for accessing your stored data. Our website should probably not be the type of objective the EU regulators are after with the GDPR, since we have just a bit of your personal information and it's both provided by direct means (when you register your account) and used only by the site software for its intended purpose of giving you a voice in the community, but it's better to be ready than regret some fine. Regarding deletion of your own account, we've enabled the previously unavailable option to remove it without our intervention. The reasoning to not provide this function before still stands in our mind, so we ask you to read about the ideal procedure for deleting your account if you so want without the Trisquel community losing the useful support information that you or others may have provided in conversations you were involved with. Best regards and thank you for your patience.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 upgrade help
It's not your fault for being a noob, a warning regarding this issue should probably be added to the release-upgrade script. This situation doesn't affect fresh installs but it probably happens to most people who were using the standard desktop session with Trisquel 7. Besides that, the lightdm greeter is probably a bit too minimalist with that icon... lots of work to be done! :) I'm really glad that your problem was solved.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 upgrade help
Hi! For your description of the issue, I think your system may be starting in the wrong desktop session. You can switch to the default Trisquel session (which is now based in Mate) choosing it from the menu that appears at the login screen to the right of the "user name" field. If my guess is right, most everything should work properly once you do that. Please report back with your results or any doubts.
Re: [Trisquel-users] do-release-upgrade doesn't work
I think that maybe your system was not upgraded and you're still using the same package versions, but your sources.list file (the one the system looks at to know where to get its packages) has been incorrectly switched to the Flidas one. To check if this is the case, I would look at the contents of this file (you can do that easily on the terminal with sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list ) and if it's showing flidas entries, I would try to switch them back to belenos and running sudo apt-get update again. If it says that nothing or almost nothing is to be installed, you would be good to go (or at least still have a perfectly working Trisquel 7 install with your audio setup intact, just like it was before attempting the upgrade). This could happen because in the process of dist-upgrading, this substitution is made at an early point; when something goes bad, this change should be undone, but maybe something went really, really bad and the rollback didn't work. Anyway, please try that (if it doesn't work, you can just set those entries back to their current value) and tell us about the result.

[Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 codename "Flidas" Release Candidate is ready for testing
Hi all! Trisquel 8 is almost ready, and we've got a full set of Release Candidate ISO images for testing at http://jenkins.trisquel.info/makeiso/iso/RC/ These latest images should have fixed all the issues some of us had with bootable USB drives and untimely initramfs prompts. They also include of course all the recent functional and freedom fixes and the new artwork. If no release-blocking bugs (i.e., something that renders these images unusable for someone or new freedom issues) are found, we'll proceed with the release on Monday 16. That gives us a full week for testing and feedback and also for fixing an small but relevant issue I'll write about below. Please test these images for those release-blocking bugs and have in mind that we'll try to work on the rest of the old and new non-critical pending issues right after the public release. We'll also share our plan for the soon-to-be started Trisquel 9 development with the Flidas announcement. One issue that we'll be fixing this week is the implementation of proper translation hooks for the new Abrowser homepage privacy settings. We'll also include some translations (it's currently only available in English) with the help of several community members, and we'll share the details for adding more languages to this increasingly relevant component later. Thanks all for your help!
Re: [Trisquel-users] tengo problemas con el internet
Hola, Jordani!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Needs A Name
I actually think Triquel may be able to ride popularity of Legend of Zelda with a name like Epona. ‐‐‐ Original Message ‐‐‐ On March 31, 2018 4:57 PM,wrote: > > > You will never get any reference to trisquel if you enter "epona" into your > > search engine, since it will always show results about the horse from "the > > legend of zelda".
Re: [Trisquel-users] Flidas Artwork
I had experienced a similar occurrence so I made a couple of tests right now: downloading from the "download" page with abrowser yielded the "faa" ISO; using wget got me the proper one, and then downloading again with the browser (as I had started to think about the site cache being somehow the culprit) gave me also the proper ISO. In short: I still don't know exactly what's going on, it may have to do with caching at some level, but there's definitely something. I'll look further into it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] More Testing Please
Sorry about that, I can't think of the reason we missed that one, it's fixed now.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New forum for free software related topics that are not strictly Trisquel related
Hi all! One week after its creation and after fixing an issue with the mailing list synchronization, I've started to move some relevant threads to the General Free Software Talk forum. Please report if you find any issue with this process. Thank you all!
Re: [Trisquel-users] New forum for free software related topics that are not strictly Trisquel related
I'm afraid I haven't come up with a solution to automate this ideal behaviour. I'll keep looking into it but most probably you'll have to change the address manually or continue the conversation once someone else has (either by manually changing the CC or by answering via forum).
Re: [Trisquel-users] New forum for free software related topics that are not strictly Trisquel related
Hi! you can put your e-mail address in https://listas.trisquel.info/mailman/listinfo/freedom-misc and then confirm your subscription with the link in the message that you'll receive. The link to the list administration interface is also visible in the forum description panel.
[Trisquel-users] New forum for free software related topics that are not strictly Trisquel related
Hi all! We've made some changes in the organization of these forums, to provide a better separation between Trisquel-related topics and support requests, overall free software/free culture/online privacy or similar topics and off-topic stuff. You'll find a new "General Free Software Talk" forum below the trisquel-users multilingual ones, and you can subscribe to its associated mailing list here. We are aware that this change may cause some inconvenience at the beginning but we think that the resulting enhanced organization will make these forums more useful and welcoming for all. We'll also be studying some other measures to continue improving these tools for the Trisquel and overall free software community. I'll be moving threads to the most appropriate forum after a while to give you all some time to read this notice and to subscribe to the freedom-misc mailing list if you want. Please contact me or reply below if you find any issue with the process. Happy Hacking everybody!

The Trisquel communit yis so strong that people from otehr communities ask Free Software questions here even when unrelated to Trisquel.
