You are correct, and i would just add a precision, because some people are not aware of the following point (I, for one, wasn't until recently). The five years of support only apply to the packages in Ubuntu's Main repository. There is no support from Canonical for the packages in Universe, which are present in Trisquel's repository.

This is all fine. Congratulations, you *are* running a free OS :). If you want to install Trisquel on that computer, I don't why there would be a problem installing it along Debian in a dual-boot setup, but I have no first-hand experience with Libreboot or your type of computer, so someone else will have to help you with that.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Trisquel repository in Debian
A default installation of Debian only has the main repository in its source list, and is a free OS. Do not manually add the contrib or non-free repositories, and you'll be fine. To make sure you only have main, let us see the content of /etc/apt/sources.list and we'll tell you if everything's fine. Also, show us if you have any extra repo in /etc/apt/sources.list.d. Do not add the Trisquel repositories to your Debian installation, as they are incompatible with Debian (Trisquel is Ubuntu-based) and you'll end up with a malfunctioning OS.

[Trisquel-users] Re : Haven't had any software updates for a while
The Abrowser situation annoys me too. I am currently evaluating Parabola. Installing it was surprisingly easy. I remembered having a hard time trying to install Arch a few years ago (I actually never succeeded :)), but following the beginner's guide to Parabola was really straightforward and easy. I am currently evaluating two desktop environments: MATE and KDE. All the programs are as up to date as can be, and that includes Iceweasel of course. But there are risks associated with the rolling release model. A few days ago, an update to hunspell, I believe, broke Icedove, Iceweasel and Icecat. On the other hand, it was fixed the next day. Also I read somewhere that the MATE desktop is currently unmaintained (the maintainer of the MATE packages for Arch decided to quit) and might be dropped from the repos for that reason. So being on the bleeding edge can have important drawbacks if you don't like (big) surprises after applying updates... Maybe Trisquel needs to drop Abrowser and concentrate on Icecat, where it may be easier to make sure the latest security patches are applied in a timely fashion?

What I'd like to understand is what kind of challenge each new release of Firefox brings to the Trisquel team. Since I have no idea how a new release of abrowser is built, I apologize if the following question is totally naive and/or stupid, but can't the Trisquel team "just" apply an existing package helper that deals with freedom issues to the upstream Firefox package? Isn't this how some Ubuntu packages are patched for Trisquel? What's particular about Firefox?

[Trisquel-users] Encrypted offsite backup - a question
I have an external backup of all my personal data, in case my house burns down. It is done the following way : tar zcvf - FOLDER_TO_BACKUP | gpg -c FOLDER_TO_BACKUP.tar.gz.gpg This is a simple method. It uses symmetric encryption, so I only need to remember a passphrase - no messing around with public/private keys. The drawback to this method is that it's not incremental. Every time I refresh my offsite backup, all the data is processed, instead of just the delta. This takes too much time. Searching on the web, I saw that duplicity seemed to be the answer to my needs. Duplicity looks great, but it seems to me (and this is where I need your advice) that it uses asymmetric encryption. Now the problem is that if my house does burn down, this offsite backup will be useless since my private key will have disappeared in the fire. Is there a way to use duplicity with a simple symmetric encryption? What simple backup tools would you recommend to answer that need (offsite, encrypted, incremental, easy to restore with a passphrase)? Thanks!
[Trisquel-users] Re : Encrypted offsite backup - a question

Re: [Trisquel-users] Questions on firefox os apps
A guy from Mozilla presented FirefoxOS to my Linux User Group. I asked about the license policy in the marketplace, and his answer was we're not sectarian, any license (include non-free) is fine. Maybe FirefoxOS could be interesting with an alternative marketplace similar to what F-Droid does for the Android world. My personal compromise is CyanogenMod (Replicant doesn't work on my phone) with F-Droid. I would switch to a freer alternative in a hearbeat, but there doesn't seem to be one (FirefoxOS doesn't seem more free than CyanogenMod - or is it?).
[Trisquel-users] Re : Questions on firefox os apps
Is Cyanogenmod better than Android when it comes to freedom? You don't need a Google account, but apart from that, I'm not sure. I refer you to this fine site from the FSFE: https://fsfe.org/campaigns/android/android.en.html And especially to that page: https://fsfe.org/campaigns/android/liberate.en.html Where you can find the following information about Cyanogenmod: CyanogenMod is a version of Android which you can use without a Google account. Even though it is usually more free than the software your device comes with, freedom is not its main objective. While CyanogenMod works on most Android devices, it makes use of non-free device drivers and firmware which are fetched from a device and are included in the ROM. Newer versions also include the proprietary Google Play services. We collected information about how you can help to ensure that CyanogenMod becomes free again, and how to identify and remove non-free parts. If you know about other non-free software applications added to CyanogenMod, please let us know about it!

[Trisquel-users] Re : Is the Universe and Main distinction meaningful in Trisquel?
Actually, I was glad to see that packages were separated between main and universe in Trisquel 7, as this is not the case in Trisquel 6, and I believe it is an important and significant distinction. My understanding is that Canonical only supports main packages for 5 years, ans lets the community take care of the packages in universe. So as far as security is concerned, there is no guarantee that packages from the universe branch will be patched or supported adequately, whereas you have that 5-year guarantee for packages from main. Someone please correct me if I am mistaken :). Case in point, the owncloud team recently asked Ubuntu maintainers to remove owncloud from the Ubuntu repositories, as it was a universe package and nobodu was maintaining it. The owncloud team didn't want people to run and insecure version, when the latest stable version is available through a ppa.

[Trisquel-users] Re : Default Privacy Settings in Abrowser
According to Ruben himself earlier on Reddit, abrowser will still be the default browser - Icecat will be in the repo as an alternative. I hope he won't mind me quoting his message here: Both work around the main problems in Firefox: that it recommends non-free software and that the trademark license restricts distribution for a fee and distribution of modified versions unless the name is changed. Abrowser follows the latest Firefox versions, while IceCat follows the latest ESR (v31 at the moment) version. Abrowser, other that saner default settings to improve privacy, is pretty much Firefox and should provide a quite neutral browsing experience. IceCat on the other hand includes more aggressive freedom and privacy features: LibreJS blocks non-free JS scripts. It is experimental by now, so use it with caution. SpyBlock (a customized Adblock) filters any well known privacy trackers, and in private browsing it blocks all third-party requests. Self-served ads should be preserved. Https-everywhere redirects you to https versions of websites Anti-fingerprinting measures have been set, like spoofing the user-agent, the referrers, and many other details. Those features provide a much improved privacy, but with a not so neutral browser experience as a tradeoff, meaning that some websites may break or behave weirdly. This will improve when LibreJS gets more stable. Because of those reasons Abrowser will be the default browser in Trisquel 7, while IceCat will be an optional installation available in the repos (also available in T6).
[Trisquel-users] Re : IceDove replaced Thunderbird.
I note that RMS suggested to simply rename Thunderbird to Icedove, not to remove it altogether...
[Trisquel-users] Re : Why owncloud client is not in teh repo?
The owncloud project provides its own ppa where you will find the owncloud client. Just follow the links for Desktop Client on owncloud.org - and don't be surprised if the Ubuntu packages come from an opensuse.org, that's because they are built using the Opensuse Build Service. If you trust owncloud for your data, I'm sure you can trust this ppa as it comes from the same team!
[Trisquel-users] Re : IceDove replaced Thunderbird.
Yeah I don't get the hurry either. A nice transition to Icedove would've been appreciated. It's not very nice to remove a major and widely used package from an LTS version without providing a freed version as replacement.
[Trisquel-users] Re : IceDove replaced Thunderbird.

Communication is a two-way street. Why do people expect you to be the one to install and use Skype, when they can be the ones who install and use a free alternative such as Jitsi? Having said that, I think people can be incredibly lazy and it has been for instance very difficult for me to convince family and friends to switch to free-software-based means of communication. To be honest, it's been a fiasco so far, not really because of limitations or problems with the free alternative (although that can be the case sometimes e.g. jitsi vs skype for video calls), but really because of inertia and change that seems to them to bring no benefits whatsoever. But if we don't try to show them that there are alternatives, who will? I get some of your points but feel that you're being too harsh in stating that a commitment to free-software means being some kind of social outcast... I run Trisquel on my computers, a free-software ROM and free-software apps on my smartphone, and am able to communicate with people, without using the proprietary 'logiciel du jour' (I have no idea what whatsapp is). Maybe there should only be one Trisquel iso. The installer would automatically check the hardware for certain criteria such as RAM, availabilty of 3D acceleration, etc..., and automatically install the 'right' desktop: a basic one for machines which are either too old, or not free-software friendly (AMD/ATI cards), and a full-fledged one for the users who have a modern machine and the right kind of graphic card. Problem solved by manually updating the YouTube All HTML5 extension. Go to https://trisquel.info/fr/browser/addons/youtube-all-html5 and click on Install extension. I guess the xul-ext-youtube-all-html5 package should be updated - the version in the repo doesn't work on abrowser 30.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Goodbye Abrowser, Long Live Abrowser
That's a good decision. I assume the packaging concerns that Ruben had, when the topic of using GNU IceCat for Trisquel was raised, will be addressed and fixed. Just a few days ago on that forum, I was lamenting the fact that GNU IceCat was lagging a bit behind the regular Firefox releases, thus lacking some security fixes. I am glad to learn that I will be able to recommend it with no caveats as soon as it is up-to-date! Will Trisquel's GNU IceCat ship with GNU LibreJS, like GNU IceCat currently does? GNU LibreJS prevents nonfree code from running, which a good thing, but at the price of breaking nearly every website :(.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Mozilla to adopt support for digital restrictions: help with the protest!
Trisquel users have abrowser, so no worry. I would love to be able to advise non-Trisquel users to switch to GNU IceCat, but it lags too far behind Firefox security-wise :(.
