From what I've read my understanding is that this is precisely what he was
trying to prevent. If users logged in, and the servers were already bugged it
would have compromised their data. If the users didn't log in, the mailbox
should be encrypted, so it should take Big Brother longer to get to the data.
This would explain why the initial response was to disable the servers (the
day before the shutdown, the servers were down but the rest of the page was
working).

Re: [Trisquel-users] You might be using a google name server

2013-08-09 Thread tsduv1994
First, click on edit connections. Then find the one you're using (if Ethernet
it likely is under Wired Connection 1, if wireless look for the SSID of your
router). Select and click edit. Go to IPv4 and change the method setting from
Automatic (DHCP) to Automatic (DHCP) addresses only. This is assuming you
want your router to dynamically hand out internal IP addresses. Under DNS
servers add the IP addresses for the servers you will be using. Disconnect
and connect again.

[Trisquel-users] Encrypting SD Card

I encrypted an SD card using the following command: "cryptsetup -y --cipher
aes-xts-essiv:sha256 --key-size 512 luksFormat /dev/PARTITION" The encryption
worked fine. So I proceeding to test by moving some data to it (although I
can only do this as root for some reason). I then unmounted the drive and
switched on the hardware lock to prevent any changes. The problem is that for
some reason I can't unencrypt the drive is the hardware switch is on.

Any tips on how to encrypt the drive in such a way that I'm able to unencrypt
with the hardware switch on? Anyone know why only root can write to the
encrypted volume?

I searched around a bit and found the disk encryption wiki for Arch

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Disk_encryption#Comparison_table

header. I assume the header is saved on the device so maybe this explains why
I can't open it when the switch is on. What is cryptographic metadata? Is it
absolutely necessary? If not, is there a way to turn it off?

The hardware switch that I'm talking about can be seen here:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/67/SD_Cards.svg When the
little plastic piece is pulled down, it is locked. The user can't write to
the device. What I want to be able to do is to have it locked most of the
time (in case that my system were to have something the files on it can't be
changed). I'd unlock it when I need to change the files on it.

Unless I misunderstood, the commands you gave me would make the device
read-only all the time. Is there a way that I can mount the device read-only
some of the time?

Re: [Trisquel-users] grub + cryptsetup not booting after kernel update

2013-08-14 Thread tsduv1994
Looking back at your first post you want to keep the line saying root='(hd0,
msdos1)' because it is supposed to be the partition number of your /boot
partition. It also seems that update-grub does find the necessary files, so I
agree that it is probably a problem with initramfs.

As to automatically running the commands on comment #15, I'm not familiar
with busybox. If it is possible to run scripts then writing one would be a
solution.

Take a look in /etc/crypttab. It should have a line reading something similar
to:

Lap-rootUUID=[UUID of encrypted volume, not UUID of sda5]noneluks

If it isn't there, add it. To get the UUID of Lap-root you'll have to mount
it first.

I think those commands you want to run automatically should be run if your
crypttab contains that line, but I'm not sure. Also make sure that your fstab
is configured to mount the encrypted volume as root, not the partition
(/dev/mapper/Lap-root as opposed to /dev/sda5 or the UUID of sda5).

What happened when you ran "update-initramfs -u"?

What files do you have in the /boot partition? Delete all the files for
previous kernels (no folders). If the initrd.img-a still shows then check in
/etc/initramfs-tools for anything suspicious. On my system, the hooks folder
is empty, as is anything under scripts.

And yes, it would probably be better if you open a new thread.

[Trisquel-users] Running Tor as Transparent Proxy

Has anyone in the community attempted this and succeeded? I was following
documentation from the Tor project to achieve this, but it does not seem to
work [1]. If I add the configuration settings into torrc (I'm changing the
one included in TBB) then I cannot get TBB to connect. It exits stating
something about a bad configuration file. If I change the iptables
configuration, and not torrc then it simply gets stuck trying to get a
connection. If I change both and then run, I get the same thing as the first
case. I'm not using ethernet, but instead wireless by the way. Any ideas?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Running Tor as Transparent Proxy

2014-06-27 Thread tsduv1994
Thanks for the reply Magic Banana. I am using the Tor that is included in
TBB. I have not installed Tor from another source.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Running Tor as Transparent Proxy

2014-07-07 Thread tsduv1994
Using the Tor included in TBB does not seem like a good idea. Once I changed
settings on torrc, it began to look for files and directories that are
expected in a full installation of Tor (.tor in home directory for example).
Perhaps with symlinks it would be possible to get it to a usable state, but
it might be prone to break.

As to the part about Tor Browser, it is not relevant. The idea is to make Tor
transparent to every program. This way the program does not necessarily have
to be SOCKS enabled to use Tor. Yes, I am aware that many programs could send
sensitive information. This is a very stripped down box, so I'm not too
worried about that.

I installed the version of Tor in the Trisquel repos just to experiment. It
is unable to understand the setting "VirtualAddrNetworkIPv4" but
"VirtualAddrNetwork" works. I was unable to get this to work with the sample
rules provided on the wiki. The transproxy.firewall.sh script by
isislovecruft does work however. It seems it should support multiple users,
but no matter how I've tried I've been unable to get that working either.
Also of note is that if I run it with just "root" as user, no program that I
open from terminal using sudo is able to connect to the Internet. If,
however, I give my user account access, using sudo results in the programs
having Internet access. What does sudo do exactly?

If running NetworkManager, it is necessary to specify 127.0.0.1 as DNS right
in the configuration here. It seems like NetworkManager ignores resolv.conf.

Also worth noting, that I have to restart Tor every time after booting up,
otherwise I'm unable to connect after adding the iptables rules.

I'll look through that script to see if I can figure out how come it works
and the sample rules on that wiki do not.

[Trisquel-users] Rhythmbox Update Script

2014-08-16 Thread tsduv1994
Recently, I decided to rip all of my music CDs in a lossless format. I
originally thought about manually editing rhythmdb.xml in order to preserve
the play count and other metadata for each track. It was quickly obvious that
this would be a daunting task, so I wrote a quick script to automate this
process. It was originally only meant for my use, but then I thought maybe
others in the community might have a use for it so I'm releasing it here.

When run, the script will ask for the format of the old files. For example,
m4a. It will ask for the format of the new files. This will likely be flac. I
do not recommend transcoding from a lossy format to another lossy format.
This will result in a loss of quality. The script will then make a backup of
the Rhythmbox database, so it is possible to recover it if something goes
wrong. It copies the metadata relating to the old files into the new files
(which needs to have been previously added in Rhythmbox) and deletes the data
for the old files. It keeps track of the location of the old files so it can
come back and delete them at the end.

I would recommend that, if possible, you backup all the music files as well.
This is in case something goes wrong and the script deletes a file it should
not. I have run this on my own library without issues. However, this does not
mean there are no errors.

Of course, if you guys have any suggestions, please post them. I know that a
suggestion will be made to add a license. I am not sure how to GPL this, so
some guidance would be welcome. Hope you guys find it useful!

Re: [Trisquel-users] Rhythmbox Update Script

Nope, that is not what I did. Let's say I had previously ripped Song A in m4a
and listened to it ten times. Now, I ripped it again from the CD in flac.
Since it is a new file Rhythmbox creates a new entry in the database. Said
entry has zero plays, as I have not listened to it. What the script does is
copy the metadata information from the entry for SongA.m4a to the entry for
SongA.flac and deletes SongA.m4a both from the database and the actual file.

The installer will detect your Windows installation. It will give you the

Getting rid of the partition is a bit trickier. I think the best way to do
that would be to boot into a Live CD and delete the partitions manually. Then
you'd have to use something like Gparted to resize the Windows partition.

ignoring this. No, you cannot, I repeat cannot, be held liable for the
traffic that comes from your IP address. The worst that could happen is that
your house would be raided and your name smeared for a bit. Take a look at
this artile for example:
http://www.nbcnews.com/id/42740201/ns/technology_and_science-wireless/t/bizarre-pornography-raid-underscores-wi-fi-privacy-risks/#.UeblsnzA9D1.
The article does erroneously refer to crackers as "hackers."

Another instance where I can think the owner has not been held liable is in
the case of trolls. I can't remember the source, although if t3g insists I'll
search for it. These guys would grab IP addresses from file sharing networks,
ask the ISP for the owner of the IP and sue them. They'd get people in the
other side of the country and tell them something along the lines of "pay us
$3000 or we'll drag you out to the other side of the country on charges of
"piracy" of pornography." A judge found that an IP address does not
automatically make the registered user the responsible party.

Likewise, if you were to use your Internet connection for illegal activity
the government is not going to jail everyone that works for the ISP. Again,
this is something that Chris mentioned and you simply ignored. In essence, if
someone is running an exit node they are providing the same service.

For the record, no you can't be held accountable for the traffic coming from
an exit node you run. The worst that can happen is you'd get raided and
you're name would be smeared for a short while. If that's too high a price to
pay, then don't participate but don't spread misinformation so no one else is
willing too either.

Re: [Trisquel-users] A few worries about Tor

That's not the same. You are simply transmitting the information when it
comes to Tor. It is hard to prove that you didn't know you were sharing a
file when it is necessary to add the torrent or magnet. Anyway, like I
mentioned previously a judge in the United States found before that an IP
address alone can't be used to find someone guilty as it could have been
another person using the network. Is it simpler to just not run a node at
all? For sure! Then too, many things are simpler if just left alone.

[Trisquel-users] Implications of modems

2013-07-27 Thread tsduv1994
Since LibreWRT came to my attention, I've considered buying a router
compatible with it. This got me to thinking, however, that the router is
connected to the modem and as far as I know there's no way to free a modem.
Is this not a big concern? It seems to me that from a network security point
of view, the modem would be a single point of failure (if it had a backdoor).

[Trisquel-users] Encrypted swap?

2013-07-27 Thread tsduv1994
Recently I had a problem with my home server. I found out because of this
that there was no swap active on the system. I had a swap partition, but it
wasn't mounted on boot. After much searching I found that the problem was
that my swap partition couldn't be mounted because it contained an encrypted
swap partition. This partition is called cryptswap1. I can't remember haven't
ever made such a partition. Furthermore, it can't be mounted through fstab. I
had to edit the local.rc file to be able to mount it.

More troublesome was the fact that I couldn't remove it. I tried everything I
could think of to get rid of it. At first, I wiped the partition were it
recided and recreated it. Upon boot up, cryptswap1 was back. So I deleted the
partitions again (since the swap was in a logical) and made the rest of the
hard drive primary. I proceeded by wiping that part of the hard drive using
dd. Once I created the partitions again, cryptswap1 came back! I tried using
dmsetup to clear it. It seemed to work, as dmsetup would no longer show it.
Once I rebooted the machine, it came back! I then installed the package lvm2
to try and use lvm tools, but the tools were unable to find any volumes! I
searched on the Internet and it seems like it has something to do with
choosing the option to encrypt the home directory. However, there's no
cryptswap1 on my laptop and I accepted that option on this machine as well.

So, does anyone know why this is on my system? For the ones that chose to
encrypt their home directories, is there a similar device under /dev/mapper
for you?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Encrypted swap?

2013-07-30 Thread tsduv1994
I don't know if anyone cares, but this gets created during installation. I
don't know if picking the option to make the home directory private makes a
difference.

To create it one has to run the following command: "ecryptfs-setup-swap"

To get rid of it one has to use this command: "cryptsetup remove
/dev/mapper/cryptswap1"

I do wonder, however, where the key is stored. It can't be very secure, as it
requires no password so I figure one could easily find the key.

Emphasis mine. Another good analogy to use is a car or a house. Imagine if
you buy a house, but the blueprints are secret. The only way you can change
your basement is if you go to the first architect and ask him for them. He
can charge whatever he wants, even though it is your house. If it was legal
for car companies to force you to get your car serviced by them exclusively
they would do it. That's what propietary software creates, a monopoly and
dependence.

As to what you say about Stallman not sharing UNIX that's not a good analogy
either. Even if it is possible to decompile and reverse engineer software it
is difficult work and one never gets the original source code back. Someone
correct me if I'm wrong, but Stallman's conflict with proprietary software
started in part because of a bug in a printer driver. He wanted to fix it,
but was unable to do so as the driver was proprietary. In this instance his
alternative was to create a new system. When it comes to movies, music,
electronic books, audiobooks, etc. the content is already accessible but
behind a jail.

And just out of curiosity did you even check out any of the films I linked
you to?

Check in /dev/mapper for cryptswap1. I don't know if the installer creates

but if it is on your system your swap partition is encrypted.

As to wiping free space on your hard drive, that really isn't useful if your

Re: [Trisquel-users] You might be using a google name server

2013-08-08 Thread tsduv1994
Nameservers are for DNS resolution as far as I know. In order for your
computer to resolve trisquel.info to its actual IP, you need one. Most of the
time, ISPs provide one for you. If you're gonna run your own, I'm afraid
you'd have to have your computer running all the time. In any case, you'd
still need a higher TLD one to do some resolutions (your nameserver would
only have the records for the web sites you visit often).

Re: [Trisquel-users] Talks about DRM

2013-08-08 Thread tsduv1994
>I am not doing propaganda. I am defending what I believe to be the best
interest of the community. So, yes, I am obeying the rules about that.

I'll try to illustrate this one more time. This is a link to the guidelines
for the community that supposedly you accept:
https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/trisquel-community-guidelines. Point 4 on there
states:

"The Trisquel project is part of the Free Software Movement and supports the
movement's *philosophy*. We are happy to collaborate on practical activities
with the supporters of open source, but that is not what we call what we do.
We ask those editing the Trisquel community wiki, posting to the forum, and
using the mailing list to please avoid certain *misnomers and propaganda
terms* and to keep in mind the spirit of free software and the *GNU/Linux
system*.

The emphasized words or phrases contain links. "Philosophy" links to
http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/philosophy.html. "...misnomers and propaganda
terms..." links to http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/words-to-avoid.html.
"...GNU/Linux system" links to http://www.gnu.org/gnu/gnu-linux-faq.html#why.

Now if you follow the link for misnomers and propanganda terms you will find
the following:

>"Piracy" Publishers often refer to copying they don't approve of as
“piracy.” In this way, they imply that it is ethically equivalent to
attacking ships on the high seas, kidnapping and murdering the people on
them. Based on such propaganda, they have procured laws in most of the world
to forbid copying in most (or sometimes all) circumstances. (They are still
pressuring to make these prohibitions more complete.)

>If you don't believe that copying not approved by the publisher is just like
kidnapping and murder, you might prefer not to use the word “piracy” to
describe it. Neutral terms such as “unauthorized copying” (or
“prohibited copying” for the situation where it is illegal) are available
for use instead. Some of us might even prefer to use a positive term such as
“sharing information with your neighbor.”

Therefore, by using the term you are not abiding by the rules of the
community.

Anyway, as I've read all your arguments on the topic (which coincidentally
don't seem to take into account any points contrary to yours) it is clear
that it doesn't matter what anyone states on the topic. Your mind is set,
even if your points can't possibly be valid as you are contradicting
yourself.

Re: [Trisquel-users] You might be using a google name server

2013-08-08 Thread tsduv1994
I could be wrong, I've never run one of my own. Don't nameservers keep the
resolutions mostly cached or in memory? If it is possible to save them to a

little slower.

I'm merely pointing out the fallacy of chastizing someone for not following

contradiction.

>As for the word piracy, well, it's better to understand the meaning that the

I just boot up from my Live CD and did not connect to the Internet. This is

nameserver 213.186.33.99

So, yes it comes with Trisquel. The other IP seems to belong to OVH which is
